Carolyn Davidson began writing in 1986, knowing absolutely nothing about the craft. Her first three books were rejected by Harlequin.
She met Dixie Browning at a Harlequin dinner in Charleston, South Carolina, and told Dixie she was writing, but that she feared she was too old to begin such an undertaking. Dixie's response spurred Carolyn to pursue her dream. Dixie said, in her own inimitable fashion, "Well, honey, you can't start any younger!" And she was right.
Having spent her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, and working woman, she's privileged to have a career that makes her dreams possible. Writing historical romance gives her the opportunity to travel, to visit all those places where our forefathers staked their claim on this country of ours. And then she goes home and writes their stories, maybe not exactly as they lived them, but as her imagination portrays them.
Carolyn lives in the South, where romance thrives, and where the sun shines almost every day of the year. In fact, some days it is difficult to stay glued to her computer, especially when the birds are singing and the flowers are in full bloom.
She lives not far from the ocean, close to Charleston, South Carolina, one of the most romantic cities in the world. Moreover, time at the beach is easy to come by. Does she enjoy her life? You bet! Harlequin allows her to write the books she loves, and her editor is patient with her quirks and foibles. Her family, though scattered in various states, is supportive, and her husband is a constant source of inspiration.
I started to care about Shay in Maggie's Beau. Was thrilled to see this book. It definitely lived up to expectations. Scarred souls, love, redemption written with insight in a solid story line. What is not to appreciate. Highly recommended.
The one I read was from 2001. Both Carl and Shad was prisioners at the same camp. Bad conditions at the camp and Carl died. Before he did ask his friend to check on and help his wife and child. Was several years before he was able to do this.
Shad very quiet about his ownself. But he took these as his family, ad pitched right in and helped. Had read books by this author before, and they one was also a great read.
Davidson's "The Midwife" is one of my favorite books, so I read this. It was a little disappointing; there was no struggle, no concealed reveal, like there was in "The Midwife." Everything goes along smoothly. it's totally predictable, .
The theme of this book and the previous one is about making peace with the past. Both Roan (from LOVING KATHERINE) and Shay (from this story) need to resolve their issues with the Civil War and their parents, particularly their hard-headed father.
As an inmate of Elmira Prison, Shay still remembers the horrors of the Civil War. He particularly remembers the deathbed request of Carl Pennington to check on his wife and child. After stalling as long as possible, Shay realizes he will never get past the guilt if he doesn’t go and help the Widow Pennington.
He finds a woman emotionally-scarred by the sacrifice she made to save her home from fire (as the Union army left the area). Like other southerners, the people left on the farm were struggling to stay alive and in control of their land.
Shay and Jenny are strong and have been tested by their circumstances. Shay promises only that he will stay until the cotton is harvested. Although attracted to each other, Shay has never stayed long in one place.
This story is similar to the previous one in that the hero comes to stay at a farm owned by a woman. The book ends when the hero meets his family again, with the help of the woman he loves. 3.5 stars
