Why is it a struggle to pray? Respected professor, speaker, and pastor Dr. Chuck Lawless explores the power of a praying church and how it can transform your ministry. Through prayer, we have access to the all-powerful living God. Even so, too many of us are tempted to start our days prayerless and feeling alone. How can this be? We can’t afford to be so negligent, because whether we realize it or not we all face a high-stakes spiritual battle when we step out into our communities. In The Potential and Power of Prayer , Chuck Lawless God chooses to move among Christians who humbly come to him in prayer; who depend on him for strength and guidance.
The first half of this book was extremely convicting, challenging, and encouraging. I am definitely more spurred to prayer with a better understanding of how than I was prior to the book. Lawless's work will help mold my established habits to become stronger and more fruitful. The second half of the book really only applies to those within church leadership. Right now, that is not as helpful since I am not in a leadership role, but in the future, I may return and find it very helpful.
Perhaps the best resource for spurring someone to desire a better, more connected need for communicating with God through prayer. Can’t recommend enough. Bathed in scriptural examples (even as the offer concedes there are too many examples to include in this work alone). Excellent planning resource for pastors and laity alike.
Personally, I wish there was a little more detailed instruction or outline so the reader could take an outline and make their own prayers. I am using, and would suggest for further development to compliment this work, with “Let the Whole Church Say, Amen” by Laurence Hull Stookey and “The Worship Sourcebook” from FaithAlive Christian Resources (particularly section 4.3 pages 178-187) to help readers construct their own prayers.
This is a great practical guide on building prayer into a churches DNA. No ground breaking concepts, but basic redirection for leadership and members to allow scripture to drive their vision. Dr.Lawless makes it clear that prayer is powerful, but prayer by itself is insufficient. God calls us to pray — yes. But he has also commissioned us to go and make disciple. He encourages the church to have a holistic approach to scripture.
I was inspired, convicted, and motivated by this short book on the Power of Prayer. I was impressed with the need to increase my personal prayer life and to infuse prayer into the life of my local church.
I appreciated Lawless’s encouragement and tangible goals for developing prayer habits. A lot of practical insights in this work about developing a personal and ecclesial prayer life—even if there are very standard and traditional insights about prayer throughout the book.
Challenging read to those who have been around Christian people for five years or longer. The Church is given tools to pray and grow in the way they pray to our omniscient God.
