Oh wow what a gripping and gritty read! I devoured in just 2 nights! From the first few chapters you just know things are about to get interesting!
Jess has just been released from prison and been sent to work in Terry's Laundry Factory. But things are quickly becoming apparent that all is not what it seems, when she gets called into his office!
Karla works in the factory too and despite her aloof personality she is the only person Jess has that resembles a friend. Or is she something more?
But that is all I'm going to say! This book is nothing like what it seems with so many twists and turns and unexpected revelations it wasn’t till near the end that I had an inkling of what might be going on. Although nothing prepared me for the reality of it 🙊
There's blackmail, abuse, secrets, lies, relationships, lust, family drama, rekindled relationships, police investigation oh my gosh it has a lil bit of everything!
I have read a few of Gemma's books and they just keep getting better and better. So if your looking for a Twisty, Gripping, Highly Compelling Read that will have you turning the pages long into the night, then I highly recommend you pick up a copy of Bad Girls!
Thank you to Rachel Random Resources and Boldwood Books for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Karla and Jess become involved in covering up a murder don t want to spoil it but it is just brilliant the twist and turns this author so good so recommend
We all make mistakes but the one Jess made has cost her dearly, her Liberty and freedom….now she has a chance to start again and have a quiet life, well quieter at any rate…. Except quiet is the last thing that happens to her as the story starts with a life changing event at her new job and then from there everything and nearly everyone attacks her, the past, the present, new friends, her family, her boss….it’s full on for Jess as she tries to cope with multiple lines of fire in her life Very raw and real and at times dark but also very honest and emotive it manages to bring all the threads together as the book continues Great characters, plot and writing make this my favourite ( so far ) from this author and its no exaggeration to say I had no idea how the story would end and who would be doing what ( with who! ) Loved it
It's not easy coming back into the world after 4 years in jail for killing your best friend's boyfriend, being sanctioned to a laundry facility for the duration of her probation. But it's better than still being inside... isn't it? It would be if the boss wasn't taking advantage of her (and the rest of the girls) predicament.
This is a solid thriller that I found on the light side despite the subject matter. I never really felt invested in the characters but was still curious how they were going to navigate what happens very early on. This kind of reminded me of a Lifetime movie (no shade, I LOVE Lifetime movies). Some things didn't quite make sense but then Bright's full of ex-cons who don't make the best decisions. There are a few twists and turns which you'll likely figure out as you go along, but there was one scene between Jess and Karla that did touch my heart. Dammit.
I do like the author's writing style - she keeps you engaged and it's a fast read that will surely keep you entertained. If you like life after prison stories laced with blood and blackmail, add this to your TBR.
Jess and Karla are working together at Brights Laundry Service. Jess case manager Barry gets her the job with a criminal record its not an ideal job but it brings in money and pays her rent. the book is set in Croydon after four year in HMP Bronzefield for killing Eddie Watts and now living in a bedsit a converted garage owned by her sisters boss Stuart as a graphic designer its was a palace compare to her cell. she so misses her family especially her mum and wants to contact her but her sister Helen tells her a pack of lies that surface as you read. Terry Bright rules his staff he abused his position and takes advantage of vulnerable women. Ashley her best friend from her childhood is now having a new life away in another town what happened four years ago between the two and Eddie Watts? This is a harrowing read and will make your skin crawl as you read, and it had me gripped right into the story I was sorry to see the end. excellent read right through
4.4 stars I didn't get completely sucked into the story but I was still so interested in how it goes on that I spent most of my spare time reading to find out. I thought it was well written and proceeded at a great pace. So I am not sure why I couldn't connect with Jess...? Anyway it is a great read and I highly recommend it.
WOW WOW WOW! I was not expecting to enjoy this novel so much! This is the first book I've read by this author but it will not be my last.
The main character messed up as a teen and landed herself in prison. She's recently been released, now in her early 20s. She wants to move on with her life and indulge on all of the things she missed out on, such as a home of her own, a relationship and nights out with her best friend. She is likable and you want her to have it all.
Unfortunately, it's not so easy especially when many are not willing to let go of her past. With her status of ex-con on parole, she's exploited with limited recourse. And she does make that one little mistake that leaves her open to blackmail. Can she figure out who's doing it before they ruin the rest of her life?
There were twists, turns and trouble all great characteristics for an action packed thriller.
Just finished The Mistake and wow, what a ride! Jess is out of prison, trying to stay clean during her probation, but her new job at an industrial laundry is anything but simple. This book throws you straight into a world of blackmail, abuse, and hidden secrets. The characters are so well-developed – you'll be rooting for Jess and absolutely despising her boss, Terry. The plot is a rollercoaster; I thought I had things figured out, but there were so many twists that kept me guessing until the very end. It's raw, real, and at times dark, but also incredibly honest and gripping. If you're looking for a fast-paced story with a bit of everything – family drama, rekindled relationships, and even a police investigation – you need to pick this one up. Trust me, you won't be able to put it down.
Jessica Strickland is fresh out of prison with no job and nowhere to live when her sister finds her a bedsit (room to rent for those of us un the US) and her case manager find her a job at Bright’s Industrial Laundry. It’s not the best place to work or live, but is a job and a roof over her head. What Jessica wants is to repair her relationship with her mother and her friend Ashley. She was told by her sister that her mother wants nothing to do with her and she just assumed Ashley would do the same after what happened that landed her in prison. While working at the laundry she befriends Karla, but is she really a friend? Also her boss Terry isn’t all that he seems to be. After a bad event at the laundry Jessica has to decide what she is going to do to keep from having to return to prison.
This book was very fast paced and kept me interested throughout. There were times where I thought I knew what was going to happen but I was wrong. You really want to see Jessica succeed and move on with her life, she is a very likable character. Terry on the other hand, is a slime all you just want to throat punch. This was a fairly quick read for me even at close to 400 pages. I rate this 4 of 5 stars and plan to check out some other books by this same author.
Thanks to Rachels Random Resources and author Gemma Rogers for the review copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Many thanks to Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources, Gemma Rogers, and Boldwood Books for providing me with a digital copy of Bad Girls in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
Gemma Rogers delivers a disturbing look at life after prison in her novel Bad Girls. This gritty crime thriller is riveting while also making you feel like the book is alive. The magic inside these pages is palpable.
Throughout the novel, you can’t help but feel for Jess. I spent the first two-thirds of the book trying to solve the mystery. I had my hunches, but when the truth came out, it was stunning.
The setting of the laundry was so real that I could feel the sweat falling off of me. I could taste every cigarette smoked and taste every last bit of alcohol. I was so engrossed in this book that I truly felt as though I were there.
The book did drag a bit in a few places. It was noticeable, but not so bad that it detracted from my pleasure in the book. Though, it could have felt like dragging because I was eager to get to the next bit.
By the end, I was a sobbing mess. The ending was incredibly satisfying, and I am feeling all the feels. I am happy to award Bad Girls 4 out of 5 stars. If you love crime thrillers, you will enjoy this book. It makes the dastardly world around us come to life.
Bad Girls by Gemma Rogers follows the journey of Jess Strickland when she is released from prison after completing her sentence. She only has six months of probation left until she is free to live her new life anyway she wants to. So when her probation officer Barry manages to get her a job at Bright’s Laundry Service she thinks that it will be easy to keep her nose clean but she discovers that being on the outside is no safer than being in prison.
The story started out really slow but once the pace picked up it got a lot more interesting and I found myself hooked. I found that each character was complex in their own way and I think that the author did a brilliant job at creating them especially the awful ones that I hated.
At times I thought that I knew how the story was going to end but there was always a twist or secret that managed to throw me off course. I never saw the end coming and I really liked how it ended. I would definitely be interested in reading more from this author. This story was filled with revenge, second chances, romance, forgiveness and heartbreak.
This book contains issues such as murder, sexual assault, drug use, violence and suicide.
I recieved an advanced copy for free, and this is my honest opinion.
This isn’t my first read from Gemma Rogers, so I was pretty confident I was going to like Bad Girls, and I was right.
Bad Girls is a twisty thriller about life after prison. Jess is an awesome main character. She’s done her time, and just want to get back to normal, but of course, things go south. She is a very likable character and easy to cheer on.
The twists and turns kept me on my toes. This is action packed and fast-paced. There were a few places the plot slowed, but overall, I was not interested in putting it down.
If you like gritty, crime thrillers, Bad Girls is the one to read.
*I received a free copy of this book from Rachel’s Random Resources to review honestly on the blog tour. All opinions are my own and unbiased.*
What a Brilliant book Bad Girls by Gemma Rogers was. I was hooked within the very first few pages and I didn't want to end. It was a gritty thriller that had lots of twists and turns with big secrets that had to come out. But, if they do they will destroy lives if the surface. This was one book, that has to be on your to read list. Like all Gemma's books I have read I have really enjoyed However, this one just had a little more twinkle within it, that had me gripped more than the others. The characters were all great and fit in well within this book.
I highly recommend Bad girls. It was a 5 star read!
This story has you sucked in from the off. Jess is realised from prison and has no one there for her. Starting a Job at Brights is the road to putting her past behind her. Karla her new colleague is more than happy to lend her a hand and help her out if a situation. Barry the probation officer has more in mind to just making sure the ex offenders stay on the right path.
This is actually a review for “The Secret” by the same author. But apparently Goodreads doesn’t acknowledge its existence. This will be the first and last book I read by this author. Her leftist, judgmental, and ignorant perspective shone through until the bitter, easily predictable end of this novel. All done with whiny, sniveling female characters that don’t even understand what they’re apologizing for. 👋🏼
Great story from beginning to end. It had all the components to make it worthy to keep the pages turning quickly. The characters played their parts extremely well which in turn kept me guessing to see who did what. An absolutely amazing plot, how we the profanity used therein was totally unnecessary as it spoilt the read hence four stars.
Ex-con girls work on a laundry service They are treated poorly by the lecherous boss Jess & Karla are friend-enemies Jess falls in love with the bosses brother Long way to a happy ending The dangling ending Did the brother know that the girls killed his brother?

4.5 - I liked this book a lot more than her previous one I read (The Flatmate).
It was very predictable but I still enjoyed these characters and their journeys a lot. The ending left a few loose ends so I wonder if there will ever be a sequel).
The decisions all seemed reasonably logical, which is my biggest thing with thrillers like these. My only issue was with the initial premise: (This may or may not be considered a spoiler) I'm not convinced someone would ruin their life and serve time in prison for murder, ruining their own reputation, just for the sake of protecting someone's reputation who wasn't at fault in any way. Her sentence may've been much different if they were all just open about what happened during the car accident.
Jess has just been released from prison and has six month probation to serve and gets a job at Brights - an industrial laundry service. The manager Terry is far from respectful to the girls and we learn of his demise in the first chapter before we go backwards leading up to the day.
This audiobook kept me on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t stop listening! I loved all the twists throughout the book and it made me wonder, “what’s going to happen next?!”
3.5/5 Rating is for the audiobook. I always find this narrator (Imogen Church) does a good job. Entertaining to listen to and story was decent. Got a bit HEA for my tastes right at the end, but up until then I’d liked the story.
This isn't a bad book by any means but I'd like to think in this day and age you couldn't get away with burning a body in an incinerator and drive the victims car a few streets away without being picked up by cameras somewhere. The author has little or no knowledge of police procedure and it shows with the bungling Keystone Cops within the pages. A good plot though and meaty characters.
This the first book I've read by this author and being as gangland fiction is one of my favourite genres, I was looking forward to this one.
Briefly the story comprises of Jess, who having been released from prison, finds herself working at a laundry and is put in a position she could do without. Here she meets Karla. Jess also has issues she needs to sort out with her mother, but her sister is determined to make that difficult.
This book, despite having several themes that may be uncomfortable for some readers, is written in a light, easy to read style. There are lots of lies and blackmail in this story, with many twists. Most of these twists I could immediately see where they were going, so it wasn't an "edge of the seat" read, at least for me, but regardless of this, I enjoyed the book and it moved at a good pace.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the digital ARC. My opinions on the book are unbiased, honest and voluntary.
Bad Girls by Gemma Rogers is a twisty, gritty and intense thriller that I really couldn't put down for any length of time. Jess has just been released from prison after serving her time. She is on probation for six months and knows if she does wrong she is right back in prison. In an attempt to get somewhere she is given a job in a laundry. There she meets Karla herself an ex-con and her boss, Terry, who expects favours from his women employees. He decides to make advances on Jess and she decides enough is enough and stands up against him...but will she end up back in prison or worse through making a stand? I have read previous books from Gemma and loved them. This book is as brilliant as the others as she really knows how to create a vivid story that draws you into Jess's world. The characters of Jess and Karla feel so real to the point that I was even thinking about them when I wasn't reading! The fast pace of the story helped to build the tension so it almost felt like I was onboard a rollercoaster with the ups and downs of the emotions that ran through my head when reading. With twists and turns aplenty to keep you gripped throughout, it is an excellent crime thriller as I always expect when I open a Gemma Rogers book. Thank you to Rachel's Random Resources, Boldwood Books and NetGalley for the copy of the book.
