Perrine's Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense: Tenth Edition

Rate this book
More than fifty years ago, Laurence Perrine pioneered an engaging approach to teaching literature that presented diverse, exciting examples and straightforward answers to tough questions. Since then, through revised editions, millions of students have used Perrine's introductions to the elements of literature, gaining a better under- standing of fiction, poetry, and drama and developing essential skills: critical reading, analysis, and writing.

The book's classic and contemporary readings bring the elements of literature to life, and represent the most accessible literature of any first-year anthology. More than 100 new selections refresh the collection with a variety of voices, including, among others, award-winning authors Billy Collins, Seamus Heaney, Beth Henley, Lynn Nottage, and Joyce Carol Oates.

As for how much I liked the creative work within, it's a mixed bag. Some things I really enjoyed and felt led me to grow in my understanding of literature, while others fell flat. I was wavering on giving this 3 stars, but considering the excellent lessons and thought-provoking questions, I thought it only fair to add a star. Obviously, one reading isn't enough to fully grasp this tome, but I can't help but believe that with diligent application of the teachings spread throughout, my future readings of such works will be much more profitable.

WOW. i never thought that literature was so complex. the cadence that some of the play take on is mundane but still had me glued to the book as awhole. though this started out as a required class reading i completed on my own time.

Not that I actually sat down and read this book cover to cover, but I have to give it 5 stars. It is so witty and entertaining; it makes poetry fun! Poetry and fun? Whoa.
