The magical training of the Fateful Eight enters a new level of danger in Midnight Mischief. The children training to be witches and wizards in the S.P.M.A. have more adventures outside the safety of the Cendryll scheduled; adventures that will test everything they have learned so far and challenge their character development. This series is getting better as it goes along – stronger plot and better writing.

Up until now, they have managed to pass their tests in large part by working together and using their special magical objects in creative ways. This next set of tests has them purposely separated for parts of the test. The results are less satisfactory than in their earlier challenges. In fact, this time one of their number fails and has to be returned to above-ground living. And in the next test, where the remaining members of the Fateful Seven are meant to be guided by a connection to their parents through their penchants, one set of parents fails to help their son, and another student is seriously injured, although he apparently doesn’t fail the test.

I was sorry to see Katie failing her test. She had worked hard and had learned a lot of important stuff in addition to her magical training. I wonder if she will remember what she has learned about friendship and working together even in the above-ground world. And I wonder if she will be allowed back into the Society later after she comes of age as used to be the common practice before it was decided to educate the Society’s children, or if she will be condemned to a dull non-magical existence in the above-ground world for the rest of her life.

I REALLY, REALLY ENJOYED BOOK 3 AS THE EIGHT CHILDREN LEARNED TO HELP EACH OTHER! At first, they were strangers trying to best each other to be first with their lessons, but gradually they bonded and they became a team. When one member struggled, if it was allowed they helped him or her and instilled a sense of " One for ALL" It appeared that Ava and Leah were slightly advanced than the others, and as one of them was removed from their class and they other was fighting for his life, the group decided to make something special without magic. AND ON TO BOOK FOUR! WILL IT BE GRADUATION OR WILL THEY HAVE TO RETURN ABOVE GROUND?
