For a mage, nothing is more important than keeping your word.
When a man Chance Fortunato swore to find turns up in Colombia, he must accompany a group of Sentinels, elite battle mages, to make good on his vow. But when what was supposed to have been a simple rescue mission becomes a deadly ambush, Chance finds himself at the mercy of an ancient conspiracy.
Pushed beyond his limits and unsure of who he can trust, Chance must race against an elusive foe to assemble the missing components to a ritual capable of unleashing something more powerful than Hell itself. With the fate of the world in balance, Chance finds himself in a game he can’t win if he plays by the rules. Will he be able to fight this evil on its own terms and keep his soul intact? Or will he end up crossing a line even the Demon’s Apprentice can’t come back from?
This one has been a long time coming. 4 years since the last book. It did take a while to get back into it. There were quite a few characters that I forgot about and I kept asking myself "who is that again" for the first couple of chapters. This is sort of a transition book where Chance is going from an apprentice to an actual mage. The writing style is the same and I missed it. There is still a lot of emotion involved and parts of the story are complex and interesting. There are other parts that just didn't work for me.
Overall I did really enjoy the story and I am glad the series is back. Hope the next one doesn't take so long to come out.
This is the seventh Book in the Demon Apprentice Book Series .
This is one of the best fantasy Book Series that I have read recently and I'm never disappointed in any of these books . Our chance has come a long way and I'm definitely here for it I'm so glad that there will be more of this series I can't wait .
This book was absolutely amazing. All our favorite characters are back and their growth is amazing. We get to see Chance and his friends become who they were meant to be, real live superheroes. I can't wait until the next book.
This was so worth the wait. This series has an odd ability to tug at my heartstrings, laugh in empty rooms, and cuss loudly, usually all at the same time.
Transparency note: I've known Ben for 25 years, and consider him a good friend. That being said, I have *not* been comp-ed or in any other way rewarded for this review. I purchased this book with my own funds.
Reign of Angels is the culmination of Chance Fortunato's Origin Story, and what a conclusion it is! Ben's writing has never been more on point. All the suffering Chance has gone through shaped him into who he is today. Together with the allies he's gained along the way, he faces his toughest challenge yet. (I won't go into details, as spoilers are not my thing.)
There is an old saying: "Who must do the hard thing? He who can. Who must do the impossible thing? He who *cares*..." Nothing sums up the spirit of Ben's protagonist and his associates quite so well. However much the world tries to push them this way or that, and no matter the cost to themselves, they plant their feet and tell it "No! YOU move!" Their sheer determination to do what is *right*, as they see it, causes them a lot of trouble, but just as often saves the day in the end.
Ben's characters are one of his strong suits, as is his grasp of Machiavellian plots and schemes. Plot elements he introduced books ago that seemed to be throwaways often are instumental to resolving later stories. It all comes together in a rich stew that rewards one with complex and nuanced flavors that always satisfy the palate.
As Ben says in his afterward, this saga has been a long-term effort, and I'm thrilled to have seen it grow and develop along the way. Whatever the future holds for Chance and his friends, I look forward to reading about it.
This entry was pretty action oriented and very driven toward achieving goals. So not much time was spared for character development. Also, not much time was spent on recapping the earlier novels, so I hope they're still fresh in your mind. That said, this definitely tied off the arc that started in the first or second book, and may well have concluded the entire series. Overall, it was a page turner and pretty satisfying.
I've been waiting for this book for years. When you anticipate something for so long there's more of a chance you'll be let down by what you've built up in your head.
This book did not disappoint in any way. It wrapped all the plots in a very interesting and satisfying way.
No spoilers here, but if you have read the earlier books and been waiting for the fluff or filler that seems to doom sequels to start creeping in, “fear not.” I’m not saying it won’t ever happen, but I am saying it hasn’t happened this time.
