Even in the witchy world of the Sherwood sisters, I have a rare magickal talent—I can literally step into someone's shoes and know things about them. Things I don’t want to know.
As head of the family business, The Enchanted Candle & Soap Company, it’s my job to keep us in the black. My sisters are depending on me, and we need a massive cash inflow if we’re going to stay afloat and expand into a new line of bath and body products.
When an aging actress swirls into town in desperate need of my velvety foot cream, this is my chance to get much needed publicity for our shop. I’ll even put up with Finn, the actress's all-too-handsome son, who continuously invites me to a — get this — ball! Fancy clothes and socializing? Please. I’d rather turn him into a toad.
Okay, not really. He’s far too cute for that.
When a woman ends up dead while wearing the actress’s very famous and very cursed pair of glass slippers, I discover my power is more important than ever. Everyone is a suspect, and the police are relying on me to help them investigate. Will stepping into the cursed shoes put me on the trail of a killer, or will I end up as the next victim?
Cinder by Nyx Halliwell is the first in a new magic cozy mystery and was a delight from beginning to end.
Ms. Halliwell has written a lovely and engaging story that was inspired by the fairytale, Cinderella, but with plenty of twists to keep it fresh. Cinder is the oldest of four sisters and feels the burden of keeping the family business, home and even their vehicle together. The story moved quickly with intriguing characters, a murder mystery to solve, very few suspects and a handsome "prince" who seems to be smitten with Cinder. I'm excited to read the rest of this series.
The author provided me with a copy of this book to review. This did not influence my thoughts and opinions in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.
What a delight! Cinder by Nix Hallifwell is a cozy mystery not too surprisingly inspired by the happy fairy tale of Cinderella. Cinder and her sisters are working to make a success of slightly enchanted candles and personal care products when she is called to an amazing mansion to meet the towns newest and best-known resident. As she tours the lovely home, she discovers the body of a murder victim who happens to be wearing glass slippers. The shoes might seem a bit farfetched until you learn that they were props from a classic movie and homeowner is a star who has retired to Cinder's hometown. Too bad the police take the shoes into evidence because Cinder's rather unusual gift is her ability to read the emotional history of a pair of shoes when she puts them on. I enjoyed the fairy tale touches, but the story addresses the problems and triumphs the women face realistically, and the murder has nothing to do with magic. I can't wait to share the adventures that await the other sisters in future Once Upon a Witch tales. I loved seeing their family dynamics; Nix Halliwell always creates families that I adore! The modern-day prince charming was charming indeed. A fun story and an intriguing mystery. Note: I read Cinder under the original title, "If the Cursed Shoe Fits".
Cinder is the head of her family business, The Enchanted Candle and Soap Company. She has also been looking after her younger sisters for years. Tiffany, an aging actress, moves to Story Cove and has developed a love for Cinder's new foot cream. So Cinder is hoping for some publicity. She's not prepared for Tiffany's son, Finn, to invite her to the ball his mother is having. And when a woman ends up dead wearing a pair of Tiffany's supposedly cursed and very famous glass slip, Cinder helps investigate to find a killer.
This is the first book in the series and is a wonderfully updated version of Cinderella. I really enjoyed this enchanting tale. I was hooked on this magical read from beginning to end although there were several errors that were distracting for me. I loved the characters and the retelling of the classic fairy tale. I'm looking forward to the next book and do recommend this one.
The sisters work hard and when a good-looking man walks into their store, Cinder is interested but has too much to do and can't get involved. Finn is very interested in Cinder, but she doesn't seem to be. He won't give up that easily. When a woman is found dead in his mother's house, Cinder can't help but investigate it. Finn invites Cinder and her sisters to a ball. She doesn't want to go, but for her sisters, she goes. Cinder isn't a real social kind of girl and Finn grew up with a famous mother and takes all the attention in stride. Can they actually find a middle ground for them? Will they find the murderer?
An interesting retelling of the Cinderella story - Cinder is not a victim of ruthless stepsisters but is in a loving supportive family who have particular gifts. Cinder is able to sense the emotions of the last person who wore a pair of shoes but has doubts about how useful that is. I received this as an advance copy from the author and leave this review voluntarily.
I loved the sisters; Cinder, Belle, Ruby and Zelle. I loved the interaction, and camaraderie of the girls and how positive they were. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the girls in the lotions shop that they own. It made me want to go to their shop!!
It starts slow and I didn't like that it spells magic Magick when the character perform it... It is a cozy mistery with a little love story and that's nice.
I love the retelling of Cinderella. It is very cute and cozy. And love how they have magic powers and that belle is part of it. She is my favorite princess
