Following the incident that nearly killed her boyfriend, Detective Charlotte Pierce needs a weekend away with him in the quaint mountain town of Quail Lake, California.
However, their trip is interrupted when a sixteen-year-old camp counselor goes missing. The girl’s body is later found by the lake shore with strangulation marks around her neck and bruises all over.
The sleepy town of Quail Lake has only one inexperienced deputy on call and Charlotte can’t say no when the sheriff asks her to help with the investigation.
When she begins to speak to the girl’s roommates and crush as well as other camp counselors, Charlotte’s instincts tell her that this wasn’t a drifter who had committed this terrible murder. This was someone who was close to her. But who would want such a nice girl dead?
As Charlotte continues to investigate, she discovers that Camp Quail Lake is full of secrets and lies. Nothing is what it seems and everyone has a reason to keep their stories to themselves.
Kate Gable loves a good mystery that is full of suspense. She grew up devouring psychological thrillers and crime novels as well as movies, tv shows and true crime.
Her favorite stories are the ones that are centered on families with lots of secrets and lies as well as many twists and turns. Her novels have elements of psychological suspense, thriller, mystery and romance.
Kate Gable lives in Southern California with her husband, son, a dog and a cat. She has spent more than twenty years in this area and finds inspiration from its cities, canyons, deserts, and small mountain towns.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Charlotte Pierce and Gavin Skeeter investigate the murder of Sarah Dunn, a camp counselor at Quail Lake. There’s a lot of secrets and lies going on at the camp. A very entertaining read and held my attention from start to finish
GIRL IN THE LAKE is the fourth instalment in Kate Gable’s contemporary, adult DETECTIVE CHARLOTTE PIERCE MYSTERY THRILLER series focusing on former LAPD Detective Charlotte Pierce. GIRL IN THE LAKE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion as their is an ongoing premise throughout.
WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise including talk of suicide and self harm, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from first person (Charlotte) and third person (Sarah) GIRL IN THE LAKE follows Detective Charlotte Pierce as she vacations with her boyfriend in Quail Lake, California. Charlotte’s boyfriend Dylan is recovering from an accident that nearly took his life, and our couple needed to spend some quiet time together in the mountains of Quail Lake but an early morning jog finds Charlotte at the scene where a young woman’s body has been located, a sixteen year old girl counsellor from Camp Quail Lake. Along with an overwhelmed local police officer Deputy Gavin Skeeter, Charlotte gets permission to lead an investigation where they begin to unravel the secrets and lies that lead to the person responsible for killing Sarah Dunn. From jealousy and rivalry of teenaged girls, Charlotte begins to piece together a possible motive for the killing of one of their own.
Meanwhile, Charlotte and Dylan’s relationship struggles with Charlotte’s need to see the investigation through to the end. Charlotte knows their time together is going to suffer but our heroine also knows that she is the only person with the ability to get the job done.
GIRL IN THE LAKE is a story of jealousy, first loves, friendships and heart break. The premise is intriguing and engaging; the characters are numerous, energetic, charismatic and young.
Detective Charlotte is on a much needed vacay with her boyfriend only to be tossed back into Detective mode when a murder victim is found and she wants to let it be and let other officers take the lead but she knows she can’t. Much is brought to light during the investigation that kept me intrigued
Girl in the Lake by Kate Gable had the potential to be an outstanding novel. As it was, it is just good. The story is quite good, although doesn’t build quite properly. I’m not sure why. Interspersed are snatches of Charlotte’s private life, but I didn’t feel like they were genuine. Dylan seems determined to hang in despite how committed Charlotte is to her job, but I don’t quite get the motivation. Partly, because of the things that have happened before but are not fully explained here. It is part of a series, but even series books should be able to stand on their own. The same thing applies to the situation with Kelsey. How these things are explained is up to the author, who did almost nothing to explain them.
The chapters were split between Charlotte, the detective, and Sarah, the victim. This was an interesting trope and mostly it worked. Charlotte’s were in real time and Sarah’s, obviously, were from a couple of days earlier. It was effective, certainly giving us more sympathy for the victim. Another criticism I have is that better proofreading would have been welcome. There were mis-usages and misspellings that distracted me.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC by the author. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #ByrdBooks #KateGable #GirlInTheLake
This was an easy read that kept me engaged. i enjoyed the concept of teens at summer camp and the cliques they form. I love female detective stories so this was right up my alley. As this was the first book I have read by this author, I will be reading more of her work.
I was provided an ARC of this book and though I felt it could be read as a stand-alone, I wish I had read the first books in the series before reading this one. i think there were a few aspects that would have made more sense as I a, sure they were things carried over.
As soon as I read the blurb for this one I knew I just had to read it. Kate Gable is a brand new author to me which made it so much more exciting for me.
I had high hopes when I started this one I wasn't disappointed. It grabbed my attention right from the beginning and had more heart racing every time I turned the page.
I will definitely be checking out more books by this author.
GIRL IN THE LAKE is the fourth book of Detective Charlotte Pierce Mystery Thriller (Nameless Girl). Gripping and compelling! Kate Gable delivered an amazing suspenseful thriller! This page-turner is fast moving with lots of twists and turns that had me captivated from the first page and no amount of guessing could have prepared me for what went down. When you think you have it all figured out, then BAM, another curveball is thrown at you! This was a great story filled with secrets and lies, betrayal, family and friendship, and obsession and murder—it builds up to a heart pounding pace that continues to increase.
Charlotte Pierce and her boyfriend, Dylan, were taking a much needed vacation to Quail Lake to relax since Dylan is recovering from an accident that nearly took his life. While Charlotte was jogging near the lake shore, a sixteen year old girl was discovered to be murdered. As the investigation continues in the murder of Sarah Dunn, a camp counselor at Quail Lake, Detective Charlotte Pierce is asked to work with the only inexperienced Deputy Gavin Skeeter on call in the little town. Detective Pierce tries to figure out the motive of why the teenager was murdered, but the more she digs, the more evidence she finds. Is it jealousy, cheating, rape, etc. Who could have done this horrendous crime? Charlotte and Gavin discovered that this case is far from being straightforward—leading them to several suspects. The motive or lies varies depending on which suspect they are focusing on. But with time running out, Charlotte must wade through the web of lies in hope that she will find the truth before the case goes cold. Kate Gable creates a world, plot, and characters that linger long after the last sentence of the last page. I recommend you get this book! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Kate Gable does it again! A clever story, cleverly written in a tag-team approach - chapter-by-chapter split between the two main protagonists: Detective Charlotte Pierce and the unfortunate victim... This also gives a neat two-view account of the happenings. You hit the ground running in the book - you realise immediately what we are facing, right from the prologue. The book does a good job at telling the current story, as well as updating you on Charlotte's back-story if you've read previous books - or putting you in the picture if this is your first - and it doesn't matter which camp you fall into, it just works. My pet hate in novels is over-done local background knowledge, i.e. the author telling you 'I've been there, I've done the research, I know every shop and cafe and all the local history - and now you will too'... But Kate doesn't do that - you just get to subtly know exactly where you are, you get a feel for the area and the local features - but it's not over-done. The beauty of this story is the lack of real evidence and the abundance of lies from all the potential witnesses - whether they are directly involved or not... It leads to a lot of digging and re-digging and sifting of information by Charlotte and her colleague. A good story well told. NB: the book has a recurring theme of suicide and self-harm conversations in young people, but sensitively done.
This is book six in A Detective Charlotte Pierce Mystery Thriller Series. Charlotte and Dylan are taking some time together after Dylan's injuries and are at Quail Lake but when Charlotte goes out for some fresh air she hears shouting and gets there to find that a woman as found a body and confirms that the girl is dead. Charlotte is asked to do the investigation but when she interviewed the counsellors from the camp there are so many conflicting story's and she realised that she will have to persevere and change tactics and soon everything comes together and she finds out who did this and another case is closed and justice is served because of her willing to not give up. This story took you in right from the start and kept your attention throughout and it was full of twists and turns that kept you guessing until the end and it was so addictive that I couldn't put it down and can't wait to read more book's in the future. Kate Gable is an amazing author and writer and she certainly knows how to keep her reader's attention and weaves a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what would happen next and I definitely recommend you read this book and other's by her and you will not be disappointed.
Girl in the Lake is book 3 in the Charlotte Pierce series.
Charlotte finally gets to take a break and go away for the weekend with Dylan, some time to relax, or so she thought.
While out on an early morning run, Charlotte hears some shouting out "help" so she goes to see what is going on where she finds a dead girl in the lake. With it being a small place there is only a rookie detective on duty so Charlotte can't leave him to investigate on his own, she steps in to help, much to Dylan's annoyance. They head to the Camp to interview her room mates and others, but everyone seems to be lying at some point. Can Charlotte work out who had killed Sarah?
I loved this book it was gripping and couldn't put it down, I was trying to work out what had happened, but got it all wrong, there are a lot of twists and turns in this book and you go from suspecting one person then another, very cleverly written.
Detective Charlotte Pierce and her boyfriend, Dylan who is still recovering from the burns her suffered fighting a fire decided they needed to unwind and take a vacation at Quail Lake in the mountains. On a morning run, Charlotte finds a dead young teen who was a camp counselor from the Camp nearby. It appears she was battered and bruised with strangulation marks around her neck. Since the small town of Quail Lake has only one inexperienced detective, the sheriff asked Charlotte if she could help with the case. So much for a quiet recuperative break. This is a fantastic edge of your seat psychological thriller with spoiled kids and lots of secrets. With lots of twists and turns you are taken on a real ride until the surprise ending. I can't wait to see what Charlotte will face next! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Charlotte’s romantic vacation turns into a murder investigation. While jogging, she finds a young summer camp counselor who has been murdered. . After questioning the other camp counselors and surveying the crime scene, Charlotte much help manage the investigation and help find the killer. She must follow the clues, sift through the gathered information and decide what is truthful will be helpful with the investigation into finding the killer of this young girl. The plot has a lot of twists and turns, suspense and mystery, and a surprise ending. An excellent book that you won’t want to put down.
This is a stand alone book, but I recommend you read the other books in the series to have some background on the characters. Thank you Kate Gable for the ARC. This is my honest opinion of the book.
When it comes to reading mystery, Kate Gable never disappoints. She has a way of writing that sets up a scene, draws you in and then keeps you wanting to reach the end to see if your assumptions are right. This book in the series about Charlotte Pierce has all those elements. You feel the heartbreak of a young life lost. You understand how difficult it is for a detective to juggle work and relationships. You engage with the process of finding out who murdered this young girl. You empathize when the crime is solved and lives are changed forever. Read this book to find out more about Detective Charlotte Pierce.
As I had preordered this book, I purchased it despite that I was sent an ARC copy, which I didn't download as I couldn't be sure I would be able to review in time. Now that is out of the way, I loved this book. Kate Gable continues with her real heroine who is trying to juggle a career and a relationship. I am glad I had read the previous books in the series for continuity, as it was good to continue to catchup on Charlotte's story. In New Zealand we don't have summer camp like the States do, but the teenage cliques and angsts are the same everywhere. The twists and turns in this story kept me guessing to the end. WARNING - self-harm and talk of suicide may be triggers for some
Detective Charlotte Pierce is finally taking some much needed time off....to recharge, relax and spend tine with her boyfriend, Dylan. Well, that was the plan at any rate. But, low and behold, this workaholic stumbles on a woman who discovered a dead teenager. The Sheriff's department is currently in dire straits and the only person available to a green deputy, Gavin Skeeter. So, Charlotte is asked to handle the case. This puts stress on her relationship. Then, the witnesses are all lying. What is everyone covering up? Will Charlotte's relationship survive? Will Charlotte solve the crime?
A great read that will keep you reading until the end. Enjoy!
I enjoyed this thriller. Charlotte Pierce and her boyfriend, Dylan, need to get away for a weekend. It is interrupted by murder. I liked the way the story is told from Charlotte's POV and also the buildup about what happened from the murder victim. I liked the setting of a summer camp. It is full of teen angst, rivalries, cliques and first love. I thought I knew who the murderer was but then a new twist sent me in a different direction. I would highly recommend it. I received an advance copy of this book from the author and this is my honest review.
Charlotte and Dylan needed this time away in small mountain town of Quail Lake for some much needed relaxation. Unfortunately the discovery of a dead body throws that plan out the window. The book is fast paced and dramatic. It had everything I enjoy in a mystery secrets, lies, suspects galore and a myriad of twists and turns that had me reading well into the night. I enjoyed reading my this book.
I received this suspenseful thriller as an ARC from the author. I finished it quickly as there were many twists and turns that kept me guessing up to the end. However, I think that it would be better if you had read her previous books in this series as there were references to other characters who were not familiar to me. Otherwise it was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I would recommend this book to other readers who like a strong capable heroine and a fast-paced story.
Charlotte is a detective that had a boyfriend almost get killed so they two decides to get away for a relaxing weekend together. But the small town has a 16 years old girl camp counselor comes up missing. She’s then found murdered and the sheriff asks Charlotte to help in the investigation. She gets involved but will she find out what’s going on and why? I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Another great read from Kate. Charlotte is having a much needed break with Dylan, when the body of a teenage girl is discovered at the lake. Before she knows it Charlotte is helping to find out who murdered her. Dealing with lots of uncooperative teens doesn’t leave much time for Dylan. Will Charlotte manage to get to the truth and how will her relationship take this distraction. Read this book to find out you won’t be disappointed
Detective Pierce decided to take a quick trip with her boyfriend, Dylan, for a weekend away at the lake… little did she know that she would shortly be pulled away to help investigate a murder with a rookie cop. Several times she was led astray due to lying teenagers, and Deputy Skeeter wanted to see the best in everyone. Pierce had to do much of the digging herself to catch the murderer and their accomplice.
The Girl in the Lake was a very enjoyable psychological thriller. I was totally hooked from the first page to the surprising end. I was trying to guess the identity of the killer all the way through. It is a very suspenseful mystery. It’s a well developed page-turner. *this was a complimentary copy and this is my honest review*
This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I always like books written by Kate Gable and this was no exception. There's mystery, deception and friendship. The Girl in the Lake is set in the lush, hot woods of a summer camp. I felt like I was right there in the cabin or by the lake or at the archery range. I could actually picture the characters. That really sets the stage for a good book.
What a tragedy, so easily could have been avoided but I guess for some people their egos can be curse.
Edge of your seat suspense all through out as so many likely suspects but you will be shocked at the real culprit and the unfolding of events will live you emotionally shuttered.
I really hope in the next edition we find out what Kelsey’s parents are hiding.
A teenage camp counselor goes missing. Detective Charlotte Pierce is on vacation but is asked to help with a murder case. Sarah is found by the lake near the campground. A lot of twists dealing with teens lying to the police. A very suspenseful novel that kept my interest.
Absolutely loved this book. Detective Charlotte is on vacation with her boyfriend Dylan when a young girl is found by the lake their at. Will Charlotte take the case and upset Dylan? Can she find the killer?
I thought it was an enjoyable read but felt at a disadvantage because it keeps referring to things that happened in previous book or books. Even with all that, I still found the book captivating and well written. Overall, it was a good read.
I read all three books in this series thus far, I really like each and every one. I can't wait till the 4th one comes out n they confront Kelsey's parents and get to the bottom of that mystery. I hope it's soon, I hate waiting. Keep up the good work.
