"BRENNA NEEDS A HUSBAND,"
Jed McCal's nephew Tuck told him. Pregnant and alone, Brenna Jamison was back--trying single-handedly to run her father's touch.

"WE NEED A WIFE,"
Tuck said. If footloose cowboy Jed McCall didn't do something drastic, he would lose custody of the boy. But marriage?

"WHY NOT?"
asked Tuck. There were reasons that only Jed knew. And marrying Brenna--becoming a father to her child--would be like jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

COWBOY PRIDE (Code of the West #5) by Anne McAllister is a second chance romance that is part of a contemporary cowboy romance series that can be easily read as a standalone. The strong, silent and brooding ranch foreman gets a second chance with his high school sweetheart and daughter of the ranch owner turned famous and talented artist after eleven years.

Widowed and pregnant, Brenna Jamison returns home to run her father’s Montana ranch while he is in a nursing home recovering from a stroke. When asked if she could tutor a talented artistic child, Tuck, she agrees, but doesn’t know what she will do if she runs into his uncle and guardian. He walked away from her once before and broke her heart.

Jed McCall cannot believe that Brenna is back home. He states he doesn’t want anything to do with her, but when Tuck tells him of the troubles she is having on the ranch he goes over to check it out. He gets rid of her unreliable hired cowboys and rounds up her old friends to help her get the round-up done for the year.

Without knowing of their pasts, Tuck decides that Jed needs to marry Brenna so the child welfare people don’t take him away from his uncle and Brenna needs a husband to help run the ranch and take care of the place while she is pregnant and give her the help she needs to bring her father home. They reluctantly agree to the idea for these reasons only, but they each have personal unstated hopes, too.

Brenna is a wonderful heroine. Talented, loving, caring and determined to find out why Jed walked away from her. She makes her life choices based on love and you are seriously involved with her finding love again. Jed is a good, caring protective, hardworking man, but he is not an outgoing or happy man. This hero had me sighing over how he took care of others and wanted to love, but he also made me want to shake him over how often he hurt others by not explaining why he walks away.

This is a quick read with minimal sex only in the final chapters of the book. I enjoyed the HEA for all the characters, but I was not satisfied with how long it took the author to get to Jed’s true motivation for what he did. The story otherwise was satisfying read.

3 Pride Getting in the Way Stars
* * *
Sometimes the title says it all.

This is a story which has the life lesson of letting go of Pride...oh that feeling can cause so many things to happen or not... as the case may be.
And in this story, it was something our fella needed to overcome.

A sweet tale of past love rekindling with the help of a ten year old matchmaker.

Jed McCall has been doing his best to raise his nephew after some unfortunate circumstances brought the child into Jed's life. Unfortunately Jed has to keep proving to the authorities that he is the best choice for guardian for Tuck and that the pair are doing well together. When it's suggested that Tuck take art lessons Jed finds Brenna Jamison brought back into his life and after their past he's not too happy about it.

Tuck loves being around Brenna and finds a way to make sure his stubborn uncle spends time with her as well. The last thing Jed expected was for Tuck to approach him with the idea that Brenna needs a husband and Jed should be the man for the job in which the arrangement would benefit all three of them immensely.

Cowboy Pride is the fifth book of the Code of the West series but each book features a different couple and plot so this is one that is fine to read as a standalone novel. The plot features one stubborn cowboy meeting up with the one that got away from him in the past with a little push from the child in his life to make this couple a pair again.

While I enjoyed reading this one and the cowboy/ranch setting involved and absolutely loved little Tuck pushing his stubborn uncle I will say that Jed's stubborness became somewhat of a turn off at some point too. Just one of those please get to the romantic parts a little sooner to me moments so that brought my rating down a bit for this one. Otherwise it's an interesting set up between the pair and a nice read with the couple having a history together.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Beautiful second chance story

Jed is introspective and not very good around people. He is in risk of losing custody of his nephew Tuck, and is not happy to learn that his long ago sweetheart has returned from New York after eleven years.
Brenna lost her husband and her father just had a heart attack. She has to take care of her father’s ranch, but the workers the agency sent her are either drunk or absent.
To make matters worse, she is several months pregnant, and although she is fierce and determined, she could definitely use some help.
She just didn’t expect to get it from Jed, the guy who walked away from her without any explanation and never looked back.
Sweet second chance story!

The heroine Brenna has returned to her family home newly widowed and pregnant. She desperately misses her late husband, whom was he best friend although she never loved him - she has always been in love with her teenage sweetheart Jed, the hero. Jed has also never had anyone else touch his heart and has never forgotten Brenna. But even though she is back he doesn't want to see her, that will remind him of his shame over his betrayal and reasons he ended their relationship ten years ago. However when he discovers she is pregnant, and after he gets over his all consuming jealousy, he can't seem to stay away. Jed is also having problems, he has pressure from social services around his custody of his nephew and needs to show a more settled existence. His nephew suggests that Jed marry Brenna and Jed asks her, surprising himself. Even more surprising, Brenna agrees. Now they both have what they wanted all those years ago - to be together - but Jed refuses to open up or allow anything remotely intimate to happen between them.

This is an incredibly emotional and touching story. The writing is pretty much flawless, it's so evocative and descriptive. The plot is also very brave of the author, but beautifully done. The hero and heroine are wonderful characters, both their past and presents are full of tension and pain, yet they so belonged together. I really couldn't see how these two would get their HEA. The hero's secret is shocking, but well thought out. I particularly liked that his secret was linked to a, er, 'problem' that makes his reasons a little more understandable (I asked my husband for his opinion on it!).

I have read a lot of Anne McAllister's Modern/Presents and I'm not crazy about them, from this books example I much prefer her style in these Desire's.
I loved this book, thoroughly recommended.

I love single parent stories. Add in a broody hero and second chance romance---this story had it all in spades. I had not read the rest of the series but had no trouble with this as a stand alone. Slow burn to the romance although I wanted to kick our hero Jed in the head because of his damn pride a few times. Enjoyable winter read!

A truly heart touching story about the inflexibility of pride and the forgiveness of love. Jed and Brenna's story has the perfect mix of romance, conflict and tension, and a certain gentleness that will catch you by surprise. As with other stories by this author, there is a wholesomeness that pulls at the heartstrings, then add to that layers wrapped within the general story, making the entire read a captivating book.

Second chances come along rarely enough that we should pay attention when they arrive on our doorstep. Once upon a time Jed and Brenna meant the world to each other, their love young and true. But sometimes the happy ending isn’t written for a couple… just yet.

Widowed, pregnant, and with a ranch and father to tend to, Brenna is just about at the end of her rope. She couldn’t deny the cute little boy’s infectious smile but she could avoid his uncle. She wasn’t looking for a husband, especially not one who’d broken her heart years ago.

Jed is a newly minted father figure for a young, smarter than you’d think little boy. He had his hands full, but that didn’t mean he needed a wife to tangle up his life even more – especially not a woman who’d left him behind with a heart that still hasn’t mended.

What Jed and Brenna think they want and what they’ll get are two different things, all thanks to a little matchmaking boy.

I enjoyed Cowboy Pride and would definitely recommend this series for anyone who loves cowboys, good stories, and engaging characters.

If you are a long time reader of Harlequin or Silhouette (like I am) you may remember this series as Code of the West. If so, then you’ll enjoy stepping back into a delightful series that you may remember – if not, then you’ll enjoy a brand new to you set of touching, enjoyable cowboy romances.

This is a very touching story of love lost, life interfering and love slowly developing into a heartwarming second chance romance. The catalyst for much of the romance is a matchmaking child who is the real star of the story!

Jed McCall seems to be a hard hearted, taciturn cowboy who does his duty but is a tough, uncommunicative individual, very unlikely to explain himself or expose his feelings. However, appearances are often deceptive and that’s particularly so in Jed’s case! He’s taking care of his ten year old nephew, Tuck, but struggling to prove to authorities that he’s the best one to do so. Tuck is a talented artist and friends arrange for him to have private lessons with Brenna Jamison, the girl Jed loved eleven years ago before she left to become a renowned artist in her own right. Now she’s returned home to run her family ranch after her father had a stroke. Jed is a total jumble of emotions at the idea of seeing Brenna again - and she’s actually just as bad. There are many things to be revealed between the two of them, not least of all why they split up all those years ago. Can matchmaking Tuck bring them together again?

If you love the strong, silent and secretly shy type of alpha hero, you’ll love Jed. He’s hardworking, diligent and loyal but also lacks confidence and is reticent about putting himself forward. After all the Brenna has gone through, she’s determined, feisty and a fighter as well as highly talented, caring young lady. The whole story is heartwarming, showing the importance of communication to overcome fears and pride and so to give true love a chance.

Many thanks to the publishers who gifted me a copy of this book through NetGalley without any obligations. This is my honest review after choosing to read it!

Cowboy Pride by Anne McAllister
The Tanner Brothers #5

Jed and Brenna were in love at one time and for eleven years Brenna has wondered why Jed turned his back on her. A successful artist she has lived in New York, married, lost her husband and is pregnant when she returns to the ranch to help her father out after is stroke. Jed is working on a nearby ranch, raising his nephew Tuck and rather curmudgeonly. He wants NOTHING to do with Brenna…or so he says…though they are thrust together often as he helps on the ranch and she teaches Tuck art. Jed is a man of principles with a secret that keeps him from really living and loving – when his secret finally comes out the marriage of convenience becomes a whole lot more.

As I read I felt this story had an old feel to it so looked it up and found that it was originally published in 1996. So, I was right and yet the story is just as valid today as it no doubt was over 20 years ago. Pride does not make it easy sometimes and it definitely did not make Jed’s life easier.

I enjoyed this book and want to thank NetGalley and Tule Publishing for the copy. This is my honest review.

An excellent second chance story. Jed McCall is happily living life single and free. Then he finds himself raising his nephew on his own and having all sorts of problems with the stay child services people. Brenna Jamison returns to her childhood home to take over running the ranch for her father, she knows staying away from Jed is the best idea. He's working on the ranch though and when Tuck, Jed's nephew comes up with a plan to get his uncle and Brenna together they don't have a chance.

Cowboy Pride is a book about a cowboy, Jed McCall, who on the outside appears rough and rugged. Yet when you did deeper his gentle character is revealed. He is taking care of his ten year old nephew, Tuck, and is struggling to take appropriate care of him.

Brenna is an artist who has returned to her father's ranch because he has suffered a stroke. She is pregnant and widowed. She is struggling to take care of the ranch. She begins to give Tuck art lessons. What Tuck does not know is the Brenna and Jed dated and deeply loved one another. Neither has been able to let go of that love and it has had a profound effect on their lives.

Tuck comes up with the idea that Jed and Brenna should marry. They are both in need and can help one another. Jed can help with the ranch and her father and Brenna can help with Tuck. I loved the wedding and watching Jed and Brenna find the loved they have for one another.

The book held my interest and was a quick romantic read with a rough edge.

A really good story, the writing is superb and the characterization splendid. It’s a very slow progress and second chance romance, sweet and tender at the right moments. I was always curious about where the plot was going.
I loved both the hero and the heroine. The hero is hard working, fiercely loyal and a bit shy. The mixture of strength and vulnerability is very appealing.
I like this author’s work and I guess I’m always expecting good stories from her.

So is this a 3 or 4🤔...Since I couldn’t put the book down for 3 hours I opted for a 4....with reservations. There are spoilers in this review, but the major one is not til the end so I will give fair warning then.

Heroine: 29 year old artist specializing in western art. Has lived in NYC for the past 11 years. Came back to Montana because her rancher dad has had a stroke and someone needs to manage the ranch. Oh and she is 6 months pregnant...and a widow.

Hero- 32, small time rancher...raising his 12 year old nephew Tuck. Social services are involved as they think he is not up for the challenge. Tuck is showing promise as an artist and our heroine is going to tutor him for free. This is not ok with the hero...he wants nothing to do with heroine. You see they have history.....

Hero and heroine were young and in love. Then 1 night the hero tells the h he never wants to see her again....She is heartbroken and flees to NYC...he is being noble(🙄 this is why book almost got 3 stars) but loves heroine. The h meets a fellow artist, a sculptor, who takes her under his wing. He professes love for her, but she lets him know that her true love is in Montana...she only agrees to marry him when he finds out he is dying...he wishes he could leave a legacy, so she’s like I will have your child. Now she does love the friend but not the way she loves our H. They aren’t married long and he dies.....Our H never knew she got married and is shocked to see she is pregnant. These two still love each other so they do their best to avoid each other at all costs(too painful)! However our h is struggling and the H may lose his nephew so a marriage of convenience is arranged. Our heroine is still hoping for some loving...and our H is very tempted...but he can’t(why you ask????) (I’m getting to it)....there are back rubs, the baby is born, h gets ok for sex 6 weeks later, and puts the moves on the H. He declines, letting her know he doesn’t want her. He moves out. Leaving his nephew with the h, her dad, and the new baby. Our match making nephew lets the H know they are going to NYC for a showing and the paintings need to be packed. While packing the paintings the H comes to an epiphany...he’s a coward and needs to do something about it. He shows up in NYC and gets the h to go to a hotel with him. The big big spoiler is coming and there are 10 pages left in the book...So 11 years ago the h’s stepsister who was in her life for just a hot minute is the cause of these two being separated..Cheree indicated to our h that she and the H were intimate...so when H broke up with the h she thought it was because he loved the stepsister....The H is ready to clear this up...Cheree shows up at the bunkhouse where our” tightly wound cold showers aren’t working Hero” is taking another shower to tamp down his growing urges for the h(they are waiting for marriage) Cheree was looking for a different guy but decides to play a bit with our H...she starts to touch him...and he ...uhm ...becomes unwound at the mere touch...evil step sister makes fun of his “premature” response, gives him a nickname and like a tornado has left destruction in her wake....so our noble hero doesn’t want to saddle the h with an unsatisfactory performance and breaks up with her....his torch still burns for her...and his torch has never ventured to any other women’s nether regions!!!!Our 32 year old virgin hero finally takes our h up on her offer and is able to keep it up til they can wither together. It looks like we finally are getting the long awaited HEA with plans to expand the family!

Ok criticism time...really?Hero? 11 years apart due to some premature ejaculation? I mean I kept reading and reading and my thoughts were running wild...he was a bull rider was his bits and pieces mangled in a horrible accident? was he missing equipment? Nope...he threw away the love of his life based on a one time incident....I can only conclude that it was his head that was damaged during his rodeo days so he wasn’t thinking straight. So this book was fulfilling my current trend of harlequin virgin heroes. There aren’t many out there...but it can be fun to read about them. You can just feel their pent up energy when the writing is good. This one didn’t quite live up to the Susan Napier ones I have read.

Cowboy Pride by Anne McAllister
Brenna Jamison doesn’t want a husband. She may be widowed and pregnant, but she doesn’t need a man in her life–particularly not strong-willed, close-mouthed, drop-dead gorgeous Jed McCall.

Jed doesn’t want a wife. He’s raising his nephew, Tuck, just fine by himself, thank you very much. And when beautiful, tempting Brenna comes back to take over her father’s ranch, Jed wants nothing more than to keep her out of his life.

Tuck has a better idea… But he doesn’t know about the past they share–one that Jed doesn’t want to remember and Brenna can’t forget. When life throws them together again, Brenna discovers that Jed matters more than she wishes he would. And try as he will, Jed can’t get Brenna out of his mind.

Yes, they have a past. But the question now is: can they have a future?
this is Brenna Jamison and Jed McCall's story.
Most of the Western art world knew all about talented artist Brenna Jamison. The pen-and-watercolor paintings she made of her Montana ranch heritage were famous far beyond the Shields Valley.
Jed was nothing more than a broken-down old cowpuncher from her past.
Jed McCall turned from the stove to stare at his nephew, as amazed as if Tuck had just announced he was going to run away and join the circus. As far as Jed was concerned, a circus would have made more sense. “Art lessons?”
Will Brennac and Jed have a future? read this wonderful well written book to find out.
I highly recommend reading.
Cowboy Pride by Anne McAllister is a wonderful well written 5 stars book.

Brenna Jamison has moved home from New York and now that she is pregnant she needs help running the ranch. The former foreman Jed McCall is now working for another friends place but still goes over to help out and his nephew is going over there to take art lessons. At one time Jed was in love with Breana when they were younger, but then she left, now he still is in love with her but he does not think he is good enough for her. Everything starts to fall apart for Jed when the county is looking at taking his nephew away. The nephew then come up with a plan of Breana and Jed getting married, and they both agree. Brenna thinking that she will finally be able to be with the man that she has been in love with her whole life. The problem is, is that Jed is good at working the ranch but not telling her what he is thinking, or feeling, and though he is in love with her his nephew, and the baby when it comes he lets them all leave for New York without him. He is standing in her studio looking at the paintings that are being loaded up for shipping for her exhibit when he finally starts to notice little details in the cowboy that has been in all of her paintings over the years. You cannot see his face but his pants, the way he wears his hat, the markings of his boots, they are all of him. All of these years of her becoming a famous western painter her cowboy has always been him and the last painting has a cowboy standing on a porch alone watching everyone leave. He now must decide if he wants to be alone or go after the women and family he wants. A very good story with very good characters. I got this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 4 stars. This is a cute and easy second chance cowboy read with a shy, taciturn hero and the stubborn woman who has always loved him. Plus the determined nephew who brings them together.

I liked it, even if it did take far too long for Jed’s reasons for leaving Brenna all those years ago to come out. It’s not for the expected reasons either, and while I did guess along the way, I’m still slightly torn as to how I feel about it. It’s different, that’s for sure, but anything more than that would be spoilers. Pride plays a big part in keeping them apart and there were times when someone needed to give Jed a smack around the head.

I also found the speed with which Jed accepts Tuck’s idea to be a bit baffling. He’s put up such a fight for so long and then… well. Sure, it does solve a lot of problems for all involved, but the way both he and Brenna both agree so quickly was convenient more than believable.

However, if you like cowboy romances with a strong, silent hero and a heroine who stays in love no matter what, then you’ll enjoy this. It’s easy and enjoyable, throws in an unconventional family arrangement and tugs on a few emotions along the way.

Brenna was widowed and pregnant and she returned home to her father’s ranch. Her father had a stroke and Breena had to help him and with the ranch. Jed is raising his ten year old nephew Tuck. But he also had to prove to the authorities he is the best thing for Tuck. It is suggested that Tuck take art classes as he is very talented. Brenna misses her husband he was her best friend but she hadn’t loved him. Brenna had always loved her teenage love Jed. Breena had left to become a famous artist. Jed never let anyone else touch his heart after Brenna. Even though Jeb had ended the relationship ten years ago. Jed doesn’t want to see Brenna. Brenna started giving Tuck private art lessons. Tuck loves Brenna and thinks she needs a husband and and his uncle Jed should be the man she marries it would help them all. Jed does ask Brenna to marry him and surprisingly she accepts.
I liked this story a lot. The plot was good as was the writing . I loved Brenna and Jed together and rooted them on. I loved Tuck and felt he really added to the story. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this story and I recommend.

Pride and embarrassment can lead to disasterous results added in with a little deception. Brenna and Jed fell in love when they were young. Jed worked on the ranch and Breanna was the ranch owner's daughter. They were trying to do the right thing and wait for marriage. Brenna's evil step sister caused havoc on their relationships... she tempted Jed and than let Brenna to believe something happened... Jed to embarrassed by what he did hides in embarrassment and Brenna is lead to believe he doesn't love her anymore....

Their love runs deep and I enjoyed reading how it was woven together and reminded me of a patchwork quilt and all the pieces being pulled together make a spectacular picture.

This is a second chance romance. Brenna and Jed were planning a future eleven years ago. Now she is back in town, widowed, pregnant and taking care of her ailing father. Jed is raising his nephew. When Brenna starts to give his nephew art lessons they finally run into each other. He tried to avoid her at all costs. When he realizes that she is pregnant, he is taken back. That would have been his baby if he had not changed the outcome of their lives. He needs a stable home to insure he can continue to raise his nephew and she needs help with her Dad and a father for her unborn child. Naturally they should get married. What could possibly go wrong with a business deal like that? Fun read.

I loved the characters and the whole story. Jed seems like the way we used to view most cowboys as the strong, silent type. It took a good women to change that to being a loved man.

What a surprise

I never would have guessed the big surprise at the end of the story! But what a sweet story. I'm so glad Jed and Brenna finally got together--as we knew they would. And Tuck & Otis & Neile, too.

Great story!

Loved the last of this series. Jeb's and Brenna's patience definitely pay off. Family and loyalty and love are what it's about.

Cowboy Pride (Tanner Brothers)

A great book read all five. Each story a little different but interesting. It’s ashamed there wasn’t more to continue in the series.

Extremely 90s - as a contemporary reader, one can think of several ways to solve their problems that don't involve marriage - but still enjoyable.

This whole series has a bunch of interesting kids. Makes the series not just western romances, but fun.
