The Ruby Rule is an open and engaging conversation with a friend that covers the most controversial subjects of today. Coombs talks about importance of being civil and respecting opposing views, something our society lacks greatly. He strives to shift the focus from spewing hate speech to holding a constructive dialogue, importance of listening and finding a middle ground.
How refreshing to read a book promoting learning over instant certainty, civil discourse over vitriol, love over hate. In our polemic world, where we are continually pressured to buy into any and every opinion the loudest contingent holds or be excoriated, cancelled, or even physically harmed, Coombs’ call for listening to understand, agreeing that it is OK to disagree, and seeking common ground upon which to build a foundation of humanity is so welcome and needed. As per usual, his points are well illustrated with research as well as personal anecdotes and engaging stories. I recommend this book – it has inspired me and given me tools to carry forth on that inspiration.
I love the idea of The Ruby Rule. There is so much discord and arguing in the world today. I’ll admit I may have to start at the platinum rule for some people, but if we all could take the insights this book offers and just apply them to small aspects of our lives we would see big changes. Well written, with relevant and entertaining stories, The Ruby Rule is very relevant and very needed.
This book was a good read, it was different than what I’m used to reading. However, it discussed important topics such as respecting others opinions whether you agree with them or not. Overall, this book has taught me to communicate more effectively in my personal life and work life. I would recommend this book to others.
