General Cao Van Vien was the last chairman of the South Vietnamese Joint General Staff. For almost ten years he worked closely with other senior Vietnamese officers and civilian leaders and dealt with U.S. military and civilian representatives in Saigon. General Vien is therefore particularly well qualified to give an account of the final years from a South Vietnamese standpoint.
General Cao Văn Viên was an officer in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). After commanding the Vietnamese Airborne Division as a Colonel, he eventually rose to the position of Chairman of the South Vietnamese Joint General Staff, which position he held for nearly a decade, from October 1965 until the collapse of the republic in April 1975. He also concurrently served as Defense Minister between January & November 1967. He was one of only two four-star generals in the entire history of South Vietnam (the other one was Trần Thiện Khiêm). After 1975, Cao Văn Viên was one of the primary writers of the 'Indochina Monographs' series for the U.S. Army Center of Military History.
