Sisters Solstice #1

Autumn of the Grimoire

Rate this book
Autumn of the Grimoire is a reaper + witch Victorian gothic romantasy filled with lush scenery, a dark, enemies-to-lovers romance, and occult secrets galore. Perfect for fans of Penny Dreadful, The Foxglove King, and Practical Magic.

Some witches cast spells. Others slay kings.

A mysterious Grimoire. A marriage full of dark secrets. A History sculpted by a quartet of ancient Sister witches.

For three hundred years, Sister Autumn has incited wars, burnt villages, killed kings, and released plagues at the bidding of the Grimoire. Meanwhile, her Sister Winter, Sister Spring, and Sister Summer have brought forth only peace.

When an Order from the Grimoire sends Agatha to the Kingdom of Merveille, she already anticipates the worst. Unless she wants to face the wrath of the Goddess, Agatha must keep her head down and do as she’s commanded.

But when the Grimoire Orders her to marry a pompous prince and play the role of a peasant “accepted” by vicious aristocrats, she finds herself at the center of a war between the classes and an age-old prophecy.

Within the court, many players harbor dark secrets—including her new husband. With her newfound influence, Agatha joins forces with the city’s Blacklisted in order to blur the lines between the common man and the elite, unravel the mysteries in her marriage, and decide once and for all if she will defy the Grimoire and face the brutal consequences.

As secrets unfold, will Agatha continue to slay on behalf of the Grimoire, or forge an uncharted History with her unlikely allies?

Witchy, gothic and magical. This was beautifully written, but I expected nothing less from JL Vampa!
If you're wanting an autumnal and gothic atmospheric read, pick this one up! I'm excited to continue the series and see what happens next. I also can't wait to get more of Aggie's sisters, they have me so intrigued!

I have a very complicated relationship with this book which made it hard to rate, so let me tell you why:

the first third of this book deserves 5 stars simply for the cozy vibes and the autumnal aesthetic. Agatha is an autumn witch who lives in the middle of the woods in a cute little cottage that is forever set in fall - like cmon !!! and she’s forced into a marriage with a arrogant prince and I absolutely ate it up.

but then we got more into the plot and I found it a little slow moving and a tad confusing at times (what is our goal here again??) - so 3 stars there.

also the potential for the slow burn enemies to lovers trope her was beyond, but I feel like it let me down a little bit (dude we don’t get a spice scene until like the third last chapter of the book … ya) but the sexual tension was choice. 🤌🏼

lastly, the book ends on a big fat “to be continued” … ya fml. will I continue ? probably.

so while this had A LOT of up and downs, I’m giving an average of 4 stars because the potential is there and this served the autumnal spooky season vibes I needed in october.

As the author of this title, I will mostly stay quite far from this page, but I do appreciate each and every one of you. In addition, I’d like to offer the following for your knowledge.

This is an adult gothic novel. If it were airing as a show it would definitely be MA. It does have the following:

Violent death (described)
Ritual sacrifice (mentioned)
Sex (open door)
Abuse (alluded to)
Historically accurate murder of an interracial couple
Mistreatment of lower class
Gothic themes

Summary
Sister Autumn has been carrying out the Grimoire's orders for three centuries, causing destruction through warfare, arson, regicide, and disease. In stark contrast, her fellow sisters, Winter, Spring, and Summer, have only brought about peace.
Sent to the Kingdom of Merveille on the Grimoire's Order, Agatha is prepared for the worst. To avoid angering the Goddess, she must comply with the instructions given to her. But when she's ordered to marry a conceited prince and pose as a peasant among the cruel aristocracy, she finds herself at the center of a class war and an ancient prophecy.
With her new power, she teams up with the Blacklisted to blur the lines between the common and the elite, uncover the truth behind her marriage, and decide whether to defy the Grimoire and face the harsh consequences.

Plot/Writing
The book follows Agatha, the youngest sister of the four, as she journeys to the ominous kingdom of Merveille. As Agatha is unfamiliar with the current state of affairs in the Kingdom, she soon realizes that something is amiss with both the people and the royal family. It becomes clear that those with malicious intentions have seized power.
We also have the Prince's POV, which helped provide insight into the inner workings of the kingdom and confirmed some of the things Agatha had observed.

The plot is brimming with mystery and captivating twists and turns. Like Agatha, I started to expect the worst. Her outlook on the situation and the uncertain nature of the events created a sense of suspense and added to the overall atmosphere of the book.

Given that this is the first book in the series and serves as an introduction to the world and its characters, the pace can feel slow at times. However, I found myself breezing through the book. At first, it was a little challenging to differentiate between the sisters, but it was a minor inconvenience that I quickly overcame.

The magical writing style of the book enhanced its already whimsical nature, adding to the immersive experience for the reader.

Worldbuilding
The author's gift for world-building is undeniable.
The book's atmosphere is one of its most compelling aspects and I found myself fully engrossed in the world and its characters. I honestly am at a loss for words on how else to describe it, just know that this is a world you will want to get lost in.
The concept of Sisters Solstice is such an interesting, refreshing, and original element that I have not encountered in many, if any, other books. I loved the vivid descriptions of the sisters' homes, which perfectly captured their distinct personalities and the season they were representing.

Characters
Agatha
Agatha is a 300-year-old witch who has been through a lot, and her past has left its mark on her heart. She is still incredibly likable, and one of the most enjoyable characters in the book. Her feisty personality, kindness and sharp mind makes her a joy to read about.
Not to mention she has a sweet bat as a familiar. Yes, a bat!
Another thing I loved was the bond she had with her sisters, especially with Sister Spring. She's actually one of my favorite characters and I can't wait to see more of her in the next books!

Grimm
Grimm, the arrogant and pompous Prince, adds a layer of intrigue to the story with his dark and handsome appearance and his mysterious past. The man's such a good actor he deserves a prize for the many roles he's able to play.

Romance
While romance is not the central focus of the book, the slow development of the relationship between the characters is a refreshing change from the typical instant attraction seen in many novels. The natural progression of their relationship is built on a foundation of tension, distrust, and slowly evolving emotions.

Conclusion
I totally recommend this book if you're looking for a dark witchy read with a drop of romance. I'll definitely be continuing the series as this book ends in a little cliffhanger.
Even though I read this book in Spring, I think it's perfect for the fall season.

this was the perfect witchy, Fall read. This book follows one of 4 Sisters Solstice, Agatha. Agatha is the youngest sister. The sister of Autumn. I loved her interactions with her sisters- Winter, Spring and Summer- and can’t wait to see more in the next installments. This wasn’t exactly enemies to lovers, more of a mutual dislike to allies to lovers. And done SOO well. All the side characters were fleshed out and all their personalities were clear. The narrator was very unreliable at times. Leaving holes to keep the reader guessing. Sometimes I wondered if I skipped a chapter 😂 we learn a lot of secrets!! I am looking forward to book 2!

Thank you to BOMM and JL Vampa for sending me an arc for an honest review

A bit of a generous 3 stars (2,9?). It’s not a bad book, interesting and cool concept, but the idea was better than the execution that was bland and I didn’t care much about anything. I’ll (quickly) skim through the next book, cause the romance I was really curious about is there, but the story it’s too bland to keep reading it properly.

January 2023 reread— Loved it just as much the second time around!! I really enjoyed noticing some more details and information. I’m still obsessed with AgathaGrimm and I adore Agatha as a FMC.
SO HAPPY to now be able to read a Winter of the Wicked ARC thanks to the author’s kindness!!

________

God I loved this!!! I was transported from the very first pages. The imagery, the atmosphere, the writing and its peaceful pacing… I can compare this book to the warm feeling of snuggling under the covers with some hot chocolate and a chimney fire crackling right next to you.

The writing was really easy to get into and the book starting with the 4 Sisters meeting made me immediately curious to know more about each of them.

I absolutely loved Agatha as a main character. She was strong, brave, stubborn and unapologetically herself. Her character development was great. I was a HUGE fan of her favorite sister, Sorscha, as well.

Don’t even get me started on Grimm! And his top tier dynamic with Agatha! A marriage of convenience inconveniencing both parties? Oh the slowburn! Oh the banter! Oh the growing tension and attraction! Immaculate. I’m obsessed with them.

As a French person, let me tell you how stupidly delighted I was upon realizing the Sisters used French words and commands to practice their Magic. A small detail, but one that made me ridiculously happy.

I would say that some parts felt a bit slow for my tastes, and I also wish we had some more information regarding some details— BUT it’s really a minor criticism, as I still loved the writing and worldbuilding as well as the characters’ development.
I am incredibly excited by what’s coming next, and already want to reread.

Which… you know what that means.

for fans of hocus pocus for sure🤌🏼

this took me MONTHS to get through, but it's not like i wasn't liking it! the autumnal vibes are immaculate! the plot dragged a little at times but im glad i pushed through because it definitely did pick up significantly by the last 100 pages! the romance is super cute, loved how it progressed, and there were some unexpectedly intense graphic parts when it came to explaining things from the past. i will definitely pick up the sequel on KU!

Ok, so this one is a little hard to rate because the plot and vibes deserve a 5-star rating. But I had a hard time staying focused and in the story cause the writing is not it for me, so that is usually a 3 star. So I'm gonna split the difference. I am going to try to continue the series and see how I'm feeling with it as it continues.

This was such a fantastic read. Gotta say in the beginning it was a bit confusing to learn who was who and what not but once that was out of the way, the story was so intriguing and honestly the perfect fall read. I loved the plot, the vibes, even the language… it was simply fantastic! I’m so excited for a sequel already, like I need it now!

Both the hero and the heroine have a “secret life” and watching them come together and realize that they really were always fated and they could actually help each other achieve their goals was incredible. I loved seeing them get to know each other, trust in the other, find out each other’s secrets and fall in love. Their banter and chemistry was so entertaining and good to read. I can’t wait to get more of these two and see what happens next with the sisters and their plan.

The sister's solstice is absolutely perfect for the witchy season! This is the story of Agatha, having to sacrifice everything in order to complete a prophecy. If you're a fan of the Chosen one, enemies to lovers, and arranged marriage tropes this one is for you! The magic and descriptions reminded me of those told in classic tales. I loved the use of the herbs and the grimoire, I just felt like I was in a cottage somewhere with a cauldron lol.

Agatha was not your typical main protagonist, she had a presence to her that showed how powerful and fierce she was. Her sassiness and wittiness had me. Having so many years under her belt is trying her best to do what's right! I love the self redemption search on her part.

Can Grimm be my next book boyfriend? I loved his character... The banter and build up of the story was so satisfying, I love them together. Mabon had me chuckling throughout the book. Can't wait to see where the story goes!

Huge thanks to the author for sending me a copy. All opinions are my own.

I was really bored. The first half the book just felt like there was no real motivation behind Agatha. I didn't even fully understand what would happen if she didn't follow the order of the Grimoire. And also Agatha had no clue about any of the unrest in the kingdom. I thought she would at least be mildly informed but girl was out here doing circles. And Thackery??? I get that that name was in Hocus Pocus but that's a horrid name for a love interest lol

I DNFed it so no rating.

A really great witchy read perfect for fall. I’m a sucker for a gothic atmosphere and this book hit the spot. You have four sisters Winnie, Seleste, Sorcsha and our main character in this book Aggie. These are the sisters solstice and Aggie is our daughter of autumn whose turn has come to take up the mantle of the Grimoire and complete the task it has set out for her. I can’t wait to get to know more about her sisters in the next books I had a great time with this one.

Autumn of the Grimoire is a spellbinding, witchy tale brimming with ancient magic, gothic atmosphere, and enigmatic plot twists.
The story revolves around the Four Sisters of the Solstice, who, bound by a sacred Grimoire, convene only twice a year, following its esoteric messages and tasks for centuries. The sisters' first encounter is both funny and full of sibling arguments, setting the stage for the story. The author expertly combines ancient sorcery into the plot, creating a captivating tale. As the narrative unfolds, Agatha, the Sister of Autumn, finds herself entangled in a web of fate and is obligated to marry a prince who is not what he seems. The plot's depth and intrigue deepen as secrets unravel.
The characters were truly enchanting, and I couldn't get enough of them. I loved how Agatha and Grimm's love story simmered and sizzled slowly, and that one steamy scene? Just the right amount of spice for this book!
All in all, this was a perfect autumnal read. I loved the soulful connection between the MCs and between Agatha and her sister witches. If you enjoy fantasy, witches, mystery, and a slow burn romance, do yourself a favor and read this lovely book! Can't wait to grab the second installment in this series!

When I first saw the multitude of 5 star reviews, I thought I was looking at a close group of friends leaving raving reviews without truly reading the book and just helping their friend on Amazon.

No, this book truly deserves the 5 stars. Every. Single. One.

I had a hard time deciding if this was 4.5 or 5 stars and I realized, my fiance said it better than me, "You're never going to find a perfect 5 star book."

Vampa deserves the 5 stars, regardless if she is self-published or not, and my 2nd 5 star book of the year!
What some authors forget in writing classes is to read other books rather than circle jerking your own book for a year and then reading eerily similar books to their own that it all just reads the equivalent to dry bread.
Vampa has a good mastery over flow and pacing when she wrote her paragraphs, that it made me look twice that I was reading a self-publisher book. She never over-expositioned anything and left enough mystery and explanation to never really feel like it was holding your hand.

Is she the next Rowling or Tolkien? Probably, probably not. Is this story revolutionary? No.
What she lacks in creating a whole Tolkien lore, she makes up for it by honing in on her craft and expanding the existing trope ever so slightly that it was a solid 5-star book. As a disclaimer, I don't usually read witch-type books, but I can say as an outsider looking in, this was a pretty damn good book that I had a hard time putting down.

I usually hate romances in stories, but for some reason, I can't explain why I was madly invested in Agatha and Grimm. Maybe Grimm was a tick in every box for my type, maybe it was the fall air or the fact this book gives you time and reason to be invested in the male interest while other books just kinda shove it in the reader's face.

Vampa, I have no idea where you're headed with this series, but I can't wait for the next book! Keep it up!

i feel like this was every fantasy romance trope rolled into one novel. i wasn't surprised or moved at any point in the book, just because i feel like i've already read this story many times over within other novels.

i also couldn't find it within myself to get invested in the characters. the mc bored me to death. she was forced into murdering a shit ton of people for hundreds of years, which you would think hardens or traumatizes a person, but nope. she cries all the time, affected by the slightest things and maintains the naivety/emotional bandwidth of a teenage girl.

the romance was serving no sparks. the love interest is a debauched prince who's involved in secretly sneaking out at night to help the cities impoverished citizens because he's actually secretly a good guy (someone please make it stop). there is no tension, no build up, no common ground. he just suddenly starts finding the mc attractive halfway through the book and thats that.

that about sums everything up. can't say i enjoyed myself throughout this one.

really, really enjoyed this book!

The world has such a dark, yet whimsical feel to it and I love the concept of the sisters solstice. Sorscha is one of my favourite side characters, such a funny character.

Agatha was a really great character and I loved Grimm! Such a good slow burn romance.

Loved this!

Cosy but gothic. Easy to follow but original. Angsty but romantic.

Just an all around great witchy fantasy with a perfect romance. I can’t rate it higher though because I did feel the plot meandered at times, and the side characters were not fleshed out enough.

Was very on the fence about what to rate this one - probably more of a 3.5 rounded up.

Aesthetically, this book really went off. I could very easily picture this as a gritty HBO drama series. The descriptions of rich autumn imagery were beautifully done and built the tone of the novel well. That said, there were definitely times when it went a little overboard. The clothing descriptions sometimes got a little too Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way for my tastes, and I wasn't a fan of how overtly Sorscha was sexualized. Considering we almost exclusively got descriptions of her from her SISTER's perspective, I didn't need to hear so much about how hot her naked body was or how her skimpy nightgown hugs her body just right. Who thinks about their sister in those terms??

Once I got into this book, I stayed pretty engaged with it. It definitely never went in a direction I expected, which is slightly disappointing but also refreshing. For example, as soon as we found out that Grimm is reincarnated frequently but can't remember his past lives, I thought "oh no. We're about to find out he was also Ira in the past and that's why they're so in love." I'm not entirely convinced that's not going to be revealed in a later book in the series, but as far as developing a relationship, I think that's super lazy and I'm happy this book, at least, didn't go in that direction.

At the same time, I wasn't completely sold on the relationship between Grimm and Agatha. When Agatha first meets the royal family and gets a chilly, rude greeting from both Grimm and Gaius, my first thought was, "I wonder which one of these assholes she ends up with." Then, when Grimm and Gaius were arguing and worried about Grimm's impending marriage ruining the way things were, I thought, "Wait. Are the two of them...?" which is honestly a relationship I could have gotten behind. For Agatha and Grimm, I just couldn't see the chemistry.

Enemies-to-lovers is a hard trope to do correctly; if the stepping stones from enemies to tolerating each other, to begrudging friendship, to genuine fondness, to actual love aren't done well (without skipping too many steps in between), you end up banging your head against a wall wondering why your protagonist is suddenly falling all over herself for a guy that treats her like shit. In my opinion, the best enemies-to-lovers stories are ones that are based in respectful dislike. In other words, although it's clear the couple can't stand each other, it's because of opposing values or competition for a shared prize, not because they both think the other is stupid and useless. The fact that the first "nice" thing that Grimm thinks about Agatha is how much he wants to have sex with her up against the shelves of the library, even when he still thinks she's an ignorant, dirty, untrustworthy peasant soured the relationship for me. Also - and this is more of a personal pet peeve - I found Grimm constantly calling Agatha "peasant" and then "little witch" was more condescending than cute. Maybe I'm just surrounded by too many children's books that use the phrase "little witch" to see it as anything other than belittling and creepily paternalistic.

I liked the twist of Grimm being a reaper (even if I think the nickname is so on the nose, it's eyeroll-worthy). The gradual revelations that everything we as readers have learned about the world is wrong - magic still exists in the kingdom, the Grimoire isn't infallible, Mila isn't actually working with Grimm - really destabilizes the story and makes us feel as shocked and lost as the characters do. The story ends with a twist that brings the Sisters Solstice together, which is definitely a good path to take, as they are by far the most interesting part of the story and keeping them separated for the entire novel felt like a missed opportunity.

One final point before I wrap this review up - I really disliked the way Sorscha's character was treated. I understand wanting "Spring" to be hypersexual, as it's the season most associated with fertility, but I hate that the shorthand for this turned into "promiscuous bisexual female character." Unlike Agatha, who is faithfully devoted to first her lost love Ira and then her husband Grimm, Sorscha is shown to be committed to a relationship with a woman named Rosemary...unless there is any other warm body within spitting distance. That's not to say every character needs to be interested in monogamy, especially semi-immortal beings that need to hide most of their true selves from regular mortals, but I think bisexual women get enough of a bad rap that using "bisexuality" as a synonym for "hypersexuality" is kind of a miss.

That said, I really did enjoy reading this book. I thought it was an interesting take on elemental magic, and the worldbuilding was pretty solid. I might continue with the series, depending on how I feel when the next book comes out.

This book has the setup to be a great series however, I found it really really boring. There was barely any magic using and no romance thus far (the romance was being advertised on insta so I feel duped). The FMC is over 300 years old but can’t keep her emotions in check. I would think after 300 years old, you would be able too do that.
Both the MMC and FMC are nice people and not evil.

It’s not a bad book by any means I just found it really slow and boring. The world is set up nicely but the book needs to be at a faster pace then what it is.
