What People Are Saying...
"Mirror, Am I Beautiful?" by Shelley Hitz is one of the best books I have read this year , and I am not just saying that because I am writing a review about it either! Not only is this book enjoyable to read, but it is also easy to read. I am encouraged by this book. It is refreshing to read a book that speaks about things I have struggled with, such as self-esteem and confidence with who God made me to be. It can be so easy to fall into the trap the devil sets for us, to try and steal our joy by getting us to focus our attention on our outward appearance, instead of on our inward appearance, where it really matters.
In her book Shelley Hitz does a great job of helping girls overcome their self-esteem issues by leading them to the Word of God. I encourage every girl who reads this to read "Mirror, Am I Beautiful?" by Shelley Hitz. You will be encouraged!"
Shelley Hitz is an author of over 50 books. However, most importantly she is a wife, daughter, sister, friend and follower of Christ. She has been ministering alongside her husband, CJ, since 1998 and her main passion is to share God's truth and the freedom in Christ she has found with others. She does this through her books, websites and speaking engagements.
She is also the owner of ChristianBookAcademy.com where she helps pastors, ministry leaders, and Christian entrepreneurs get published and market their books.
Shelley's openness and vulnerability as she shares her own story of hope and healing through her books will inspire and encourage you.
Mirror Mirror…Am I Beautiful? By Shelley Hitz This book was obviously written for young ladies in their teens or early 20’s. But if you aren't in that age category I wouldn't let that stop you from reading it, especially if you are a flesh and blood woman who has struggled with any of the dozens of things mentioned in the contents.
For instance: • Self esteem • Body image • A father’s love • To date or not to date • Flirting: innocent or fun • Emotional virginity • Differences between guys and girls • Sexual abuse • Broken hearts • Sex and depression • Fashion Tip, My Edition of What Not to Wear • How Are You Advertising Your Body?
Many older women have struggled with issues like these and have never taking the time or energy to seek the Lord’s healing. Many times they feel that it isn't necessary to go back to deal with something that happened so many years earlier – sometimes things they hardly remember, or wonder if they really happened or are just part of a bad dream.
Being a woman who lived in the world without the Lord for a good portion of her life, I have had the opportunity as a believer to seek healing and forgiveness in many areas of my life.
Never-the-less I still found my eyes filling with tears several times during my reading of this book. It was obvious to me that the Lord wanted to peel off yet another layer and help me deal with some deeper hurts that I hadn't been able to face before this.
I would highly recommend this book to any woman of any age.
In his eulogy at Whitney Houston's funeral, Kevin Costner said that, "there's a lady in heaven who's making God Himself wonder how He created something so perfect."
A nice line. But the point is that it can be applied to every single human being. And that is what Shelley Hitz is telling us in her book.
We are all perfect creations. Indeed, we are created "for the display of God's splendor," according to Isaiah.
Too many girls today struggle with issues of self-esteem. This excellent book shows how, ultimately, the problem is that they are trying to find their self-esteem and worth apart from God.
Every girl wants to be beautiful. We all want so desperately to be thought of as attractive, especially by guys our age. But unfortunately, in the process of trying to achieve that beauty, we often turn to the wrong sources to find and keep our beauty. Everyday makeup, inappropriate clothes, overdone hairdos, relationships (good or bad) with guys, and the list could go on. In addition to that, as we seek affirmation, we also struggle with what the world tells us about how to live our lives and where we can find our happiness and contentment. They all look appealing, especially since everyone else is doing them, but none of them really work. All of this makes it hard to live life as a young woman in our culture today while keeping our self-assurance and our self-esteem intact. It makes us ask the questions: How can I find assurance in our world today? Am I really beautiful, or is there another way to measure my value and worth?
In their book, Mirror Mirror…Am I Beautiful (2nd Edition), authors Shelley Hitz and Heather Hart answer the questions of where women (especially teen girls) should find our value as well where to find assurance in our culture today. They take the opportunity to address many relevant issues that are so prevalent in our culture, and they share ways that we can understand them from a biblical perspective and demonstrate how we can use our responses to honor the Lord in the process. What makes this book so relevant is the number of topics it covers. This isn’t your typical Christian book on beauty and self-esteem; it’s really a guide book to help you find your confidence in Christ and to live your life in such a way that expresses that confidence. And this confidence in Christ will be what will make you beauty, not anything you can do to yourself or for yourself. All of this is communicated in easy to understand language and relevant examples from the lives of the authors and from other girls and women just like you. There are even discussion questions for each chapter in the back of the book that can be used for a Bible study.
Whether you struggle with not having enough confidence in Christ, if you find you have too much confidence in the world’s ways, or if you find you’re somewhere in between, this book is for you. I would recommend to any teen girl around 15 or older, or anyone that works with teen girls, like parents, youth sponsors, or teachers.
Mirror, Mirror, Am I Beautiful?" by Shelley Hitz is a self-help book of sorts aimed at the teenage/college age woman who is coming in to her own. Hitz targets a different area of a woman's life in each chapter with topics related to not only physical appearance and beauty within, but also self-awareness, sexual health, spiritual beauty, modesty, and more. Though I am nowhere near a teenage or college age woman, I have a teen daughter and I do recall that time well. This book is well written and Hitz seems to be in touch with her "teen self" within. Though her topics range seemed to be all over the place, they are all important and I have no idea what she could have cut out. Maybe the chapter on homosexual-ness? That didn't seem to have a whole lot to do with anything. But other than that, I think this book would be of value to a young woman looking to present herself with dignity to the world. I received this book from the author through the www.bodyandsoulpublishing.com website.
