My father traded his life for mine. And now I’m bound to an enemy.
I finally carved out a life for myself with minimal interaction with my abusive father. He might be the alpha, but he hates me enough to leave me alone as long as I don’t make him look bad.
Until he decides to challenge another alpha and offer my life in exchange for his. Now, I’m life bound to an enemy and I’m trapped in a strange pack.
Despite my attempts to keep my distance from my captor, I find myself drawn to him. But as we get closer, things get more dangerous.
There’s so much more to this than it seems and I’ve ended up right in the middle. One wrong step and it’s my life on the line. If I can't get free of this, I'm going to end up dead and I'll be taking my captor with me.
Shadow Mate is a full-length paranormal romance. 17+ for dark content, steamy scenes, and language. This is book one in a trilogy and is not a standalone. Mind the cliff.
Alexis Calder writes sassy heroines and sexy heroes with a sprinkle of sarcasm. She lives in the Rockies and drinks far too much coffee and just the right amount of wine.
Shadow Mate is the first book in the Shadow Wolves series. It features Morgan and Luke. Morgan is a great heroine. She's worked so hard to try and be independent and protect herself, even at her own detriment. I admired her. She's plugging away at her life, trying to avoid being pressured into a position that she doesn't want, when her father offers up her life in exchange for his. This sparks events that turn her world upside down and leave her reeling.
The second main character is Luke. I liked him. Though I didn't agree with everything he did, I understood it. He may be a slightly aloof alpha, but he means well and is honorable. I look forward to seeing what happens next with him and with Morgan.
I enjoyed Shadow Mate. It has action, betrayal, mystery, and a slow burn romance. I would recommend it to fans of paranormal romance.

Morgan has not had a terrific life because her father just doesn’t care about her at all. Morgan tries to be strong because no one else is protecting her. Then suddenly she finds herself traded off to another pack when her father challenges and loses the fight. Trading her saves him from being killed.
Luke is the Alpha that Morgan’s father lost to. How will he react with Morgan? Will he accept her as a mate? Will he make her life as miserable as her father has? Or will he accept her into the pack and help her adjust? I look forward to the next book in this series to see how everything plays out.

“You said I’d be safe here.” I hadn’t meant to say it, but the words came tumbling out. “I know.” “I wasn’t safe.” “I’m sorry.” He sounded so sincere, so disappointed.”
… Ahhhhh, but was he? Was Luke really sorry? Was he truly disappointed? When push comes to shove, will Luke be there for Morgan or will his name be added to the list of betrayers?
Morgan’s life had been full of disappointments, full of betrayals, full of pain. She might be the alpha’s daughter, but daddy dearest had no love for her. He did nothing to stop the abuses she suffered. He thought nothing of her being bullied from a young age. When she went in heat and a couple of male wolves forced themselves on her having their way with her, dear old daddy said it was good for her. Thus Morgan builds up a defensive and protective wall within herself.
That works for a while until her alpha dad does the unimaginable. He sells her to another pack. She now belongs to Luke, the new alpha of The Lost Pack, a pack that has stayed hidden for so long that no one believes they’re real …. They are but a fairytale.
While at The Lost Pack, Morgan eventually makes a few friends. But not all is as it seems. Danger lurks and Morgan is the key to to their safety… BUT AT WHAT PRICE?
🤔OBSERVATIONS:
✒︎ This is a mix of werewolves and witches, with the witches playing a very prominent role.
I✒︎ appreciated the book staying with the plot line without throwing in a lot of foul language. Job well done.
✒︎ Owen was such a loser and power seeker, it was easy not to root for him. Ahhhh, but I loved how it was Owen who was the real hero and hope to see him in future book(s). I so want to see him defeat his demons…. wink, wink.
✒︎ What price does betrayal really cost? Is it ever worth doing bad to get a good outcome?
✒︎ I want to know just what Luke did to become the wolf he is. How and why did he become this wolf.
✒︎ Loved the ending. It made me want to know more… more about Morgan and Jasmine, more about Luke and especially more about Owen. In the right setting, I could see myself rooting for Owen, the real Owen, the Owen that made the biggest sacrifice of all.

Morgan has not lived a great life. Even though she is the alpha's daughter, she is given zero respect. Which is all due to the fact that her father outwardly outwardly shows he doesn't care about her. So it doesn't really come as a surprise when he loses an Alpha battle to the death and immediately turns around and offers his daughter up in exchange for his life. Only, when Luke agrees, he's unknowingly bound his life to Morgan's. If she dies, he dies. Which is the perfect opportunity for her father to kill off Luke and take over his pack. So, with no other option, Luke kidnaps Morgan and takes her back to his territory where she will be safe. Except, nothing is ever as easy as that.
This story is told in both Morgan's and Luke's POV. I really liked that we got inside both of their heads because it allowed us to get the full picture on what was going on. Morgan was a very strong character that was making the best out of a crappy life. With her father turning his back on her, she's had to fight for her own safety. She runs her own bar, and doesn't have to answer to anyone. So, when she's brought to Luke's territory, suffice to say, there's an adjustment period. Meanwhile, we had Luke who at first is just trying to get to the bottom of what's going on. All while trying to keep Morgan and himself alive. Luke's POV definitely handled more of the behind the scenes of what was going on with all the killings taking place.
This was a great start to a trilogy. I found myself not wanting to put the book down because I wanted to know what was going on. You know that Morgan and Luke are mates (even though they don't know it themselves) and I really appreciated the way the author handled it all. We didn't get insta-love or a quick romance because they are "mates". The author is making these two work for it. So it will be interesting to see what happens in the next book. This is a good book to read if you're in the mood for a shifter story.
A fast, interesting shifter romance read with a dual POV (always a treat in a romance!); definitely a good time for those who enjoy shifter stories.
I liked the characters; we have a spunky protagonist in Morgan, and other feisty females, and a kind and gentle alpha in Luke. Morgan has a fun personality (despite having been mistreated by everyone around her her whole life - "regret and daddy issues"🤧😳), and has a façade of badassery (which she is; a girl does not go down without a fight, and she is soo resilient) yet is soft and sensitive inside; meanwhile, Luke (who is definitely swoon-worthy) is like the reverse of her - a gentle giant type, with coiled power rippling under the surface, commanding awe and respect for his warm heart and powerful might and leadership both.
The writing is quippy and made me chuckle at times. I also liked the fast pace and quick action, though I did feel at times that it went a bit too blindingly fast; I would have liked more scenes with Luke and Morgan alone to develop their budding romance, and certain scenes that were meant to be emotionally-charged felt impersonal because of how frenzied the pace is.
It also felt kinda info-dumpy at the beginning, but it did help to quickly establish rules and the world so we could dive quickly and with full comprehension into the action - pack secrets, mysterious deaths, powerful magic and threats.
It'd leave you eagerly anticipating the sequel to see just how they navigate all the revelations and threats going forward!
This book is the perfect amount of slow burn and action. Morgan and Luke are perfect for each other, except they both kinda can’t stand the other for a while.
Morgan has some past trauma that definitely messes with her life but with Luke and some new friends she is able to overcome trauma.
Luke is now in charge of his own pack and all the responsibilities that it comes with. He will protect his pack and when another alpha comes to challenge he will defend. With winning the battle he gets something he didn’t expect, a life bond to the daughter of the alpha. A daughter who wants nothing to do with her father and has no idea why she was traded.
Luke must help Morgan overcome trauma and learn to shift, while Morgan must help Luke to beat her father and the witches he is working with.
This was a great book with action and a nice slow burn. While the cliffhanger was expected, I know that it will only make book 2 so much better.

While the writing was decent, this one fell kind of short for me in a couple ways. First of all, the plot development was way lacking; there was a demon, so…. Okay, but it was still very confusing as to what the demon’s motivations were and why it did any of the stuff it did, starting with “trading” over Morgan… was the point of that to kill Luke? If so, why didn’t the demon try to kill her when it had the opportunity? Throwing in that Luke is a “shadow wolf” at the very last second just felt pretty unnecessary and wasn’t explained well. Also, the relationship development didn’t do it for me. The love interests have literally no connection beyond the physical, and barely even that. Also, the whole “heat” thing ended up being lame as hell. I don’t know, there was potential here, but the book just didn’t grab me at all.
Shadow Mate is the first book in the Shadow Wolves series and it revolves around Morgan and Luke. Morgan was an independent woman, but her father trades her life in exchange for his which turns her world upside down. Luke was an interesting character. He was the Alpha that Morgan’s father lost her to. Luke and Morgan are mares even though they don’t know it and it was interesting to see how this would pay out.
This book was really hard to put down and I loved that the relationship between the two developed gradually. This book had a mix of werewolves and witches; there was mystery, action, betrayal, and a slow-burn romance.
This book is a slow burn with some mystery. The emotional trauma from Morgan’s past is definitely something that should carry a minor trigger warning - it’s nothing that goes into major detail but some details could be a bit much for some people. I love Luke not going to lie. There was plenty of action and plot twists, had me gripped right from the start. That ending though! The cliff hanger I knew was coming but didn’t want to accept. I do hope they get a happy ending at some point.

We have betrayal in many different ways for Morgan. What will she do when she finds out that Owen plans on her being his wife? What will happen to the bar of her mothers if that happens? Why is Luke hidding from other wolves? Will he really protect her or will he lie? Who is really trying to take down the wolves? Can the witches help or will they help destroy them? She can only trust one person her best friend Jasmin who is also a witch.

This book seems to be setting the stage for the series. Morgan and Luke have feelings for each other. Like isn’t sure it is t the life bond and is trying to be a nice guy by not taking advantage of Morgan but his actions when dealing with her dad are a betrayal of her and she isn’t ready to let that go. For Luke, there is nothing like learning the woman he just let go is actually his fated mate. Guess the next books will build their relationship.
this was a great start to the Shadow Wolves series, it did what I was hoping for and had what I enjoy about the genre. The characters worked so well and it was a great romance. I enjoyed reading this a lot and it left me wanting more.

I picked this book out just because. I’ve never read this author before, but the synopsis seemed good and I was curious. It didn’t disappoint, it was exactly what I was expecting from it. It went a bit too fast, a little background story would have been better, but overall it was enjoyable. Now on to the 2nd book.
Shadow Mate is the first book in the Shadow Wolves series. Morgan has not has an easy life. She does carry a lot from her past. There are possible triggers for some including SA. This is a slow burn but fits the story well.
I really enjoyed this book and loved the characters. I can't wait to see what will happen next for Morgan and Luke if they will be able to fight their feelings.
Not steamy at all. Quick read, okay story line. Last two pages say the same thing. Repeated, so I'm assuming editing was not done correctly. I don't usually complain on typos or Grammer but two pages of identical wording was annoying.
This book was really a great read I enjoyed the plot the storyline the development of the characters. I also love A strong female character I think the book came with appropriate trigger warnings A definitely recommended
Morgan is a wolf that doesn't shift because she refuses to be forced to anyone for a heat. When her dad challenges Logan an Alpha of the lost pack and looses he trades her life for his. There is more going on and tbings get ugly. Will need more.
Awesome read! I love how Alexis mixes the paranormal romance with mystery/intrigue. Characters and dialogue was great, the steam was minimal and seemed a bit pushed into the story, but it was still an awesome read, and I can’t wait till the next book comes out!
Absolutely in love with this book so far. It has everything you need. Really can't wait for book 2 to see how it goes I hope they have there happy ever after.
