Your dream home in the perfect neighborhood! Well, that’s what Katie and Sean believed as they moved in. But quickly learned this home has a history…one they don’t want to repeat!
As Katie and Sean introduce themselves to their neighbors they’re warned of the aggression of the occupants of one home. While the pair across the way may be guilty of driving apart the couple who previously lived in their home. Are Katie and Sean safe in their dream neighborhood?
This was a quick, fun domestic thriller. I did guess the ending, but Daniel Hurst said "not so fast"! And had one more twist as a parting gift! I already have his latest audio release queued up!
"Everybody is here, and this is what I was hoping for. Now it’s time to get to work."
The Neighbours
by Daniel Hurst
Katie and Sean have just moved into their beautiful new house!
It is a lovely home on a quiet street with just a few neighbors.
There's the problem. You see, these neighbors are not like most neighbors. To put it bluntly -- they're kind of weird.
Or maybe batshit crazy.
I liked this book. It had many twists and turns and was a fun and quick read. It's predictable in a way -- the plot's been done before. But it also has some twisty elements that are NOT predictable and a heck of an ending. (No spoilers.)
Only issue I had was I could not stand either Katie or Sean. This is an issue that most likely will happen to you as well.
Some aspects of the book were hilarious as this seemingly happy couple sees their relationship fall apart, over stuff so easy to fix, one does not need to be a marriage counselor to see what the problems are and how to solve them.
No spoilers but....Katie and Sean....just. say. no.
STOP apologizing.
Be happy, you silly couple!
Alas, Katie and Sean are pretty hopeless at that. Being happy I mean. These two would be terrible psychologists so please anybody -- if you have issues and want to talk to somebody -- do not choose Katie and Sean because they will likely mess up your life with their drama. Just a warning.
Putting aside the actions of these two, which would make ANY codependent person, feel just fine about their life, these two train wrecks are fun to read about. One also wants to yell through the book, "Stop it! Don't DO that." But alas, it is unlikely they would listen. (Sad face here.)
I enjoyed the other characters more although Chris annoyed the shit out of me for reasons unknown to me. I did like his wife though. No comment on anybody else.
So, I'd say read it if:
you want to read a quick and enjoyable book about nosy and very bizarre neighbors:
Or you want to:
Feel better about every decision you've ever made in your life or:
Both.
Either way, I am working my way through this writer's work and this is so far my second favorite and I have now read four and will soon start on my fifth. 3.5 stars from me.
When happily married couple Katie and Sean move into their new home, they are immediately warned about their neighbors.
Are these warnings justifiable?
There are many "Beware of Your Creepy Neighbors!" books on the market today and this book simply was not a standout.
In a nutshell, the book lacked the "thrills" of Daniel Hurst's earlier psychological thrillers.
Even the "twist" at the end of the book was lame.
I listened to the audiobook and both narrators did a fine job with the narration.
Even though this book was disappointing, Daniel Hurst is one of my favorite popcorn thriller authors and I will certainly be eagerly reaching for his future titles.
Dysfunction to the MAX Well this is not my favourite by Daniel Horst …let’s just say from the very first page I knew I was in trouble 👿
Katie & Sean move into their new home 🏠 in a cul de sac with only 3 neighbours to worry about. Katie who wears the pants in their relationship tells Sean they should introduce them selves to their new neighbour, BUT they are warned by Albert & Eileen to stay away from Chris & Abi who are good looking they seem nice, Albert tells Katie & Sean they have broken up marriages … you see they like to swap partners, well you can imagine Katie’s eyes popped out your not serious they don’t take the warning ⚠️ will their marriage survive?
This was my least favourite by Daniel Hurst the characters were unlikeable a bit OTT at times some funny moments but silly as well. Dysfunction, Dysfunction, Dysfunction.
This was my 5th book by this author, and it’s another fast read (small book). At least the story in this one was more believable. I did enjoy its structure with dual POV(s) and the development of the story. The plot is quite simple, but more like a drama rather than a thriller (well, it is far from being a thriller, in my opinion). The writing was good, but there was nothing extraordinary here. Readers mentioned twists and surprises but I was oblivious to those, perhaps because I found everything predictable. Regardless, this was very entertaining, hence my ratings.
I started this book as it had good reviews and I love a good thriller. At first it thought it was slow but would get better but it didn’t. I actually thought it was a very poor storyline and you could see how it would end way before it actually does. It was boring and felt like it had been written by teenager , not my cup of tea at all! There’s not many books that I can say I feel like I’ve wasted so much time on them !
Oh, those darned neighbors! Why can’t we all just get along? All it takes is one bad apple in the basket. And there’s a possibility there’s more than one rotten apple in that basket. Nonetheless, the main characters (the new homeowners on the block) think they have a strong, stable marriage, but listening to them make excuses and justification for their behavior or for their neighbors behavior and their internal fighting and second guessing themselves made for a strong appearance of some very weak minded individuals, which I found difficult to like and difficult to tolerate.
it starts off all cozy and harmless a married couple moving to a new place meeting new neighbors everything seems nice and warm at first but give it a few chapters and the atmosphere slowly gets weird enough that i might want to install a cctv system around my house immediately
the vibe is spot on full of those the more i know the less i trust moments every character seems normal on the surface but deep down i just know something is off honestly reading this felt like mentally drafting witness statements every few minutes because everyone looked suspicious
the plot does not rely on big shocking twists but rather a slow burning tension that creeps under your skin until i suddenly realize i am completely hooked
★★★★☆ / 5 this book is a must read just do not blame me if you feel a random chill walking past anyones house after finishing it :)))
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is my personal 5 star rating system because I’m too lazy to write a review for every book.
5 stars -> OMFG. I couldn’t stop listening. I was engaged from beginning to end. The story & narrator was amazing. I 100% recommend this book & author. I was able to clearly follow each and every character.
4 stars -> It was pretty good. I would’ve rated 5 stars, But either the ending was lacking, I struggled to keep up with characters, or the story didn’t keep me fully engaged. The narrator was pretty good as well. I’m on the fence about recommending this book, It could go either way.
3 Stars -> It was boring at times & I missed chunks of the story. I most likely struggled to keep up with character developments. The only way I would recommend this book is if it was part of a series. The narrator was most likely average or just couldn’t fix a mediocre book.
2 Stars -> It was pretty horrible. I used it as background noise because I hadn’t had a chance to search for another book. The book either had a bad narrator, The character development was non existent, or the story was hot garbage. I would not recommend this book.
1 Star -> The absolute only reason I listened to this book was because i had no time to search for another one & I needed background noise. It was 1 step up from listening to the radio. I wouldn’t recommend this book to my worst enemy. Everything about this book was terrible. This is only recommended for people on death row and have absolutely nothing else to read.
Found this so unbelievable .. the main characters are annoying .. so childish and to believe the ideas / rumours of others .. honestly no .... no one would behave like this ! Found it quite trite and repetitive .. hankering after good looking neighbours !really ? Why did I bother ? I also guessed the end ..did not find it building in tension at all . This came highly recommended .. it just shows we all have different tastes The end too is not believable .. Kate is a wushu washy character with no guts and to do what she did dies not sit well at all
Awful book! I like Daniel hurst but this was lazy It went on a bit too I thought I just carry on to see the big ending...... And there wasn't one. Just a boring confrontation. I was so shocked at what a lame ending it was I literally thought the writer was taking the mick
I’m giving this book a 2 1/2 stars. This book was not only predictable but, it was a boring read along the way. I kept hoping for a crazy twist or plot that blew my mind but…..nope!
Wellllll, this one, while entertaining, was blatantly obvious as to the end. I enjoy the lightness of Hurst’s books, and though I like some more than others, I will keep on reading his stories. This was another of those that, I cringe, adds a stupid twist at the end. For that, I dock a star. This “neighbor” story did have a different plot than the typical, stalker ones. For that, I was pleased. And, as I say for many of his reviews, I like his books to read between the heavier storylines I read. Always a joy to read Hurst!
Katie and Sean have found the cutest little house on the quietest little cul-de-sac in the neighborhood. Of course you know this means they are about to experience hell on earth. Katie is eager to introduce themselves to the neighbors, and the first house they visit is the tidiest on the street, belonging to an older retired couple, Albert and Eileen. The pair is eager to spill all the dark secrets of the cul-de-sac, and Katie and Sean are deeply unsettled when they leave.
At the center of the drama are Abi and Chris, who supposedly seduced the prior owners of Katie and Sean's house and caused the dissolution of their marriage. Having been warned to stay away from them, Katie and Sean find themselves inexplicably drawn to the couple. Scattered into the drama is troubling behavior from the single father next door and his unruly teenage son.
I enjoyed the story, but there weren't many moments of high action and being a domestic drama, it lacked the twists and turns of a traditional thriller. Although the ending wasn't jaw-dropping, it was satisfying in its simplicity.
This has been my least liked book by this author and given that I only started reading Daniel Hurst 12 days ago and this is my12th book by him, it goes without saying that I've enjoyed his stories immensely. This, however, failed to deliver for me on all fronts. The story was poor, the characters weak and the reason for the culprits behaving as they have, silly. Katie and Sean move into a new house in a quiet cul-de-sac. They meet their neighbours the good looking Abi and Chris, the anti-social Ian who works away on rigs most of the time but when he's home has his supposedly problematic son Jackson with him and lastly the elderly couple Albert and Eileen who choose to warn their new neighbours about the residents in the other two homes. 2 and a half stars.
Daniel Hurst always adds an unexpected twist to nail down an already edge of your seat suspenseful thriller. He is by far one of my favorite audiobook authors. I can listen to his novels for days. Never lackluster. Always fast paced. Always captivating. Always engrossing. Always unputdownable. Ready for another of Hurst’s novels!
Katie and Sean move into their new home full of confidence about their lives there. It is a very exciting story that has twists which keeps the characters unsettled. The characters were skilfully drawn in order to make them completely believable. A Good read.
and so far my absolute favorite one I've listened to was the first one mentioned there Til Death Do Us Part which was actually really good and had an epic plot twist of an ending that made me want to try more Daniel Hurst books. This one however was okay, but it got rounded up to half a star after the epilogue which I have to say was pretty clever and yet, the story in general was pretty intriguing and had me at the edge of my seat and wanting more and more, but then when the revelation of what really happened, not gonna lie, it was okay and yet kind of predictable I remember of a thought I had of some things, I just didn't know of course the motive as to the why and yet when the why happened, I was like, seriously? That's it? Kind of lame to be honest, but other than that, the story in general was pretty good, just not as mind boggling or blowing like the other Daniel Hurst books I listened to so far. I'll still want to keep going with his books though once in a while so I kind of figured he'd have some good ones, favorite ones, and some I may not like as much which is okay. I'd still recommend this and so far any of Daniel Hurst books in general since books speak differently to different people. So as I officially have it thanks to the epilogue twist which was actually a clever way to end it, I rounded it up to 3 1/2/ stars but not quite a 4 star this time round.
I have read other books from this author. I mostly like them. Quick reads. This particular title wasn't his best. The characters weren't well developed and the title is supposed to throw you off but I figured out the entire book in the first introduction to "The Neighbors". I didn't find it suspenseful or thrilling. The main couple was just like any other couple in their mid 30's and I felt like I was reading a book about kids in middle school the way that they were written. This one is a pass if you want something that you can't put down.
Found this like many of Hurst's other books to be too repetitive. Too much of it seemed to be added in unnecessarily, and would have been better missed out entirely. It reminded me of taking an English exam and having to add in bits to meet a word count. I worked out early on what was going on and just wished the book had more to it. I have read all of Hurst's books and hope to see more of the great writing he has produced in the earlier books.
Couldn’t actually get through the book Really unrealistic characters with a really pathetic story around them Katie is a very annoying character constantly worrying about what others think and such a cliche of a woman from the very start-as in her dilemma was trying to find room for all her clothes and shoes in their new house 🙄 The way her husband Sean even speaks about her is very cliche of “she’s my wife I have to do what she says I’ve learned the hard way not to”
Kind of hard to believe this story. I think what the old folks were doing was far reaching to think they could spoil lives by what they were doing. The other two couples must have been really gullible. You can only be seduced if your ready to be. The main character actually breaks the law with the intrusion she committed. Why did she think she was above the law. All in all this book is totally silly or I guess the author thinks the readers are all stupid
