I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of ‘Hunt for the Halfling’ 🤍 I always go into each novel I read wanting to love it and I was so happy when I did love this one!

From the first page you’re gripped, especially upon meeting Felix and Calum. I only had to put this down to work and sleep, it’s such a good twist of adventure and romance. My 16 year old self LOVED (and still does to this day) books that are YA paranormal. Following Tabitha as she’s thrown into this new world is exhilarating and exciting, as you meet the paranormals and the new world it’s so refreshing to see it’s not you’re typical ‘ya paranormal’ and has a completely different tone to it!

The author has put so much love into this book, and you can tell on every page. This is an amazing debut novel, perfect for all of those who love romance, paranormal creatures and twists at every turn! The ending will leave you REELING (I did not see that coming, as much as I didn’t see a lot of the plot coming)

I can’t wait for book two, I wish book one was longer as I feel like I’d just started to get to know the characters but alas, that’s what a second book is for 🤍 I can’t wait, I love this so much and it proudly sits with my other indie books! Congratulations! 🥳🥳

I've written and rewritten this review several times over since finishing this book on the bed and just stared at it for a good few minutes.

First, I appreciate the arc and goodies that Elena sent in exchange for a review.

Second, I hope that The Hunt of the Halfling will be the first of many, like The Mortal Instruments. If there are others like me, I can only hope for at least another five books, a set of prequels, books on the Fabled, the Institute, the Siblings, Amara, Angel, the 'ancients', etc.
This is actually quite something, as this one book is the first book of this debut author. There is a lot of potential here for a Crimson universe.

I may add to this review later, as my head is still racing with thoughts.
I look forward to what Elana Moriarty will write next.

I read The Hunt of the Halfling in two days because I just couldn’t put it down and I’m usually super slow.

The author provided me an ARC copy and I was very thankful as the book sounded so interesting. And it did not disappoint!

It has the perfect mix of current times with a magical world. I love the humour, how the story flows and all characters fit in place without you having to go back and check characters. The story was also very original in my opinion and the characters were so rich.

Tabitha’s road to learning who she is will show you a hidden magical world existing within the real one. And with all the elements of a good ya fiction book. I cannot wait for the next one(s) and to learn more about the characters and what surprises may lie ahead.

I'm not a fan of vampire fiction usually, but Elena was able to beautifully write a captivating story that sucked me in until the very end. The tension between characters kept me entertained and pining after certain male leads!
Definitely recommend!

✨I spluttered “I do not want to see you shirtless.”
Felix wiggled a finger towards me. “Your heartbeat says otherwise”✨

Book Review -

Okay first of all I just want to say a massive thank you to @authorelenamoriarty for giving me my first Arc, in the short time I have spoken with her I have learned that she is such a sweet person and is going to make it far in this book community!!

I enjoyed this book immensely, even more than I thought I would and I was so excited to read it that it skipped through 30+ books on my tbr pile to be read the moment I got my hands on it.

I loved how the characters were developed throughout the story, and the easy banter that came between Tabitha, Felix and Calum. Honestly made me laugh out loud, and finish this book in one sitting! Every single one of the characters are so unique and you can tell that Elena put a lot of thought and love into them to make them who they are. When you’re reading along, you literally feel as if you’re apart of their inner group and laughing along with them.

Even the story it self is so unique and I really enjoyed the twists and different ideas that set this book apart from so many other YA fantasy reads. This is truly the beginning of an amazing series, and I am definitely here for it 💛

I have become fully committed to this series and characters, mainly Felix am I right? But this book will hold a special place in my heart, and for sure a special place on my shelves.

Just a friendly warning to prepare for the cliffhanger, it packs a hell of a punch but makes the story even better.

I really hope that everyone reading this review will give Elenas book a chance as I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed. You’ll just be screaming at the cliffhanger and knocking down her DM’s wondering where the heck book 2 is at and why we can’t read it right now!

The Hunt of the Halfling: 4.5/5*- spoiler free review

To start us off I'd like to first thank Elena @authorelenamoriarty for sending me this arc which was packed with lots of love. I seriously appreciated snacking on those lollies as I was reading :')

In short here are my honest ratings if you don't want to read the full review. Please consider giving this debut and self published novel a shot. I genuinely really enjoyed the book!

Plot: 4/5
Characters: 5/5
Humour: 5/5
Romance: 4.5/5
Writing style 5/5
Recommended for those that enjoyed:
The Mortal Instruments, Infernal Devices and anything faerie/mythical like

Let's jump right into the nitty gritty's without any spoilers :)

Plot: Personally my biggest issue was with the plot; I thought the plot was intriguing because the book was really well written without a really defined plotline (for example in CC the defined plot line is solving a murder mystery) since the book is mostly about the main character discovering things about herself. However, I found that the plot lacked a tiny bit of momentum that would have made a 5/5 for me and would have benefited from having things at stake to keep the tension high. I also found the initial progression of the plot a little slow but once it gets going it GETS GOING QUICKLY so i'm not saying the plot isn't good but would have benefitted from a higher stakes and character struggles which would increase my emotional attachment to the characters.

Characters and humour: HIGHLIGHT OF THE BOOK!! I love the characters dearly especially their personalities and Calum who has the most wicked humour and sarcasm! I genuinely laughed out loud multiple times because of how funny the characters are and the banter between them is gold! All the characters are so wholesome and some very touching scenes were written that I really loved. For example, the MC's interaction with her human mum was one of my favourite scenes in the whole book.

Romance: I can't say too much without spoiling but the MC and her love interest make me gush. It is a very sweet romance but it would have benefitted with an explanation of the love interest's actions at the party he threw :') and maybe just a few more hints in the development of their relationship (especially in the beginning)

Writing style: Elena's writing style is a 10/10! The style is very friendly and readable

This was such a fun and easy read! The first 30% is basically the beginning of City of Bones but instead of shadowhunters, Tabitha finds herself surrounded by vampires. I enjoyed reading about this fun vampire family a lot!

Even though the pacing was fast and the writing easy, something was missing for me, something that would elevate the story and make it stand out more. It could be just me overgrowing the young adult genre, but I thought it needed a bit more polishing.

I'll admit I didn't really fall head over heels for the romance storyline here and wanted more chemistry, however, there are many adorable scenes and I'd love to see what happens next! The ending was definitely unexpected and makes you want to read the next book as soon as possible. The characters are fun and there's a lot of potential for the next book.

I'd recommend this to everyone who loves fast-paced fantasies with easy-to-follow world building!

A huge thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this book!

This book was amazing!
From the very first paragraph I was drawn into Tabitha’s world and loved everything about it! The characters felt real and authentic and Elena’s writing painted a picture that was truly mesmerising. While there was lots of dialogue every witty comment and sarcastic sneer (Felix you have my heart) only added to this beautiful debut novel!
If you are a fan of the Shadowhunter series and Twilight you will adore this book!

I was given an arc in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book in the Crimson Tale Series.

Love the world building and characters. The blended world of the mundane and the inhuman is amazing and loved how seem less it was to cross between the two.

The magic system is really interesting and I cant wait to see what else is explored. Time and space plays a part in the story and I really enjoyed the way it was used throughout the book.

I loved the relationship between Felix and Tabitha. The change in between them and how Tabitha begins to trust Felix as well as Felix opening up was lovely to read.

The ending left me hanging and I need to find out what happens next!

Tabitha is thrown into a world of magic which she wants to have no part in. That is until it is revealed she is a Halfling - a different type of being living amongst the Fabled - werewolves, warlocks, fae and vampires. The latter which not only manages to drag her into this new world but manages to capture her heart. Though Tabitha is on the hunt to discover why her past and who she is kept a secret, it only leads down a dangerous path and she cannot turn back to being kept in the dark.

The Hunt of the Halfling is the first book in the Crimson Tale series and only gives a small glimpse into what is to come for the characters and the world. I was kept on edge reading through this book as the world began to shape itself around Tabitha as she was introduced to all of the Fabled beings and characters. I was transported into the magical world and the settings were gorgeous and well-shaped.

The characters were clever and witty and their dialogue felt natural, the relationship between Tabitha and Felix is a slow burn and I’m so grateful their relationship wasn’t the forefront of the story so I could take in the worldbuilding and introduction of some fabulous characters.

This story is sweet and magical and feels kind of like sitting in the sun with a cup of tea. The story wraps around you and whisks you away, it truly feels like a fairytale story and I’m hoping that after that distressing cliffhanger ending that things are worked out in the next book. I can’t wait to see how the characters I was introduced to in this book will change and grow in the next.

I thought the storyline was decent, mildly repetitive, but not too bad, though it seemed like it had some older themes with a writing style targeted for younger kids. Which I know is kind of the point of YA, but when the writing style is seemingly targeted towards 10 y/o, and the themes are more 16+, I feel like it’s too big of a gap. It made it a little hard for me personally to read.

The romance was really cute, but I do feel like, for a book that isn’t technically a romance, it focused a bit too heavily on it, whereas it should’ve just been a side plot.

I did love all the characters, but after a certain point Tabitha (fmc) really did start to fall into the ‘I’m not like other girls category’ and it started to ruin her a bit.

However, HUGE points for the ending. Absolutely incredible (and devastating), and it’s made me want to get the next book. Great job there to Moriarty.

This book has A LOT of potential.

I want to make it clear that I did not dislike this book. I read it quite fast and enjoyed it.

However there are so many moments in this book that are just rushed. Background stories that should have some build up and mystery to them are just stated and within the page the characters have moved on. So many things that could have been used to add some context are once again simply just stated and overlooked.

Overall liked the book just think the plot could have been planned out a bit better.

OMGGGGGG THAT WAS EPICNESS

Firstly wanted to thank Elena for giving me one of her ARC’s to read and review 🥺❤️ you truely are one of the sweetest people and I have very much enjoyed talking to you about your book ❤️
ps-sorry for yelling at you once I finished 🤣

Okay wow. I was really hoping I was going to enjoy this book especially being one of the first people to read it, I didn’t want to let Elena down. And well I can happily say The Hunt of the Halfling did NOT disappoint. I was instantly hooked from the very first page, literally every single page in this book I enjoyed immensely. I truely did have a lot of fun reading this book. The characters were bloody awesome, you can really tell Elena put a lot of love and work into every one of them. The way Elena has written the story and the characters and how they talk is in my opinion one of the main reasons this was such a fun read, like I’ve rarely had this much fun reading what the characters are saying and doing 😂 they were so funny, actually hilarious, like I genuinely laughed out loud at some points. But not only that I loved and enjoyed the story line and was always excited to see what was going to happen next.

One thing about me is when I’m reading a book (no matter how much I may be enjoying it) I always get distracted, by my phone or the tv or even just by my thoughts wondering off. But with this book... nope. My eyes and brain were fully committed to every single page. If that doesn’t show how much I enjoyed it, than I don’t know what will 😂

Also ummm CLIFFHANGER WARNING!!!! I NEED BOOK 2 NOW PLEASE
Another thing Elena has done spectacularly, writing that damn cliffhanger

I really hope anyone reading this review decides to give this book a go, and I really hope everyone else enjoys it just as much as I did! (or more but I highly doubt that’s possible)

I really liked the overall premise of this book but had some issues with the pacing.

Tabitha was an intriguing main character, but her constant crying was a bit much.

Felix’s character felt a little flat for me, he was either cranky and rude or sweet and caring, there didn’t seem to be anything in between. I wasn’t a huge fan of the instalove between them and found him revealing his crush to her odd considering he had been making out with a random woman at a party not that long ago and they hadn’t interacted all that much since.

I also would have liked to see more of the friendship between Tabitha and Calum, he seemed like a really cool character and just kind of faded away near the end of the story. Not to mention their ‘mums’. How did they all end up living together? Why did Florence work for them?

There was so much going on with the story by the end that it became a little hard to keep track of everything. The ending felt a little rushed compared to the slower reveals at the beginning of the story, and it felt like we were given a lot of information all at once.

One second Tabitha was able to summon flames and then suddenly she had access to some sort of dark magic that was never explained.

It will be interesting to see where the next book goes considering there is now a time jump. Hopefully now that the overall lore has been established it will be able to learn more about the characters and their motivations.

Despite everything, I still enjoyed the book and am looking forward to finding out what happens next to Tabitha and Felix.

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐃𝐍𝐄𝐃!.... - my thoughts after reading the final paragraph of this book.

This book was an 𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒛𝒊𝒏𝒈 read!

I loved the world building throughout the whole book, I think it has definitely left a good strong view of the world that is to come in future books of the series.
The characters in the story are well written, I am in love with Tabitha and Felix. Their growth throughout the book, separately and together was wonderful to read.
I am a sucker for slow burn romances and this story did not disappoint in that! I’m completely smitten!

The plot twists. Holy guacamole...
I pride myself on being a good detective when reading of figuring things out or at least getting a vague idea before it occurs in the book, however, 𝐈 𝐃𝐈𝐃 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐒𝐄𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐄𝐍𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆!!

I was so fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this incredible book. Thank you so much Elena for giving me the privilege to read this amazing book before it’s been released so I can shout out to the world how amazing it was and how excited I am for the sequel to come out! (It’s almost finished... yes?? I’m dying with anticipation over here. I need book 2, like tomorrow 😂)

I've been mulling over how best to articulate my thoughts on this book...

Undoubtedly, it's an ambitious piece of work, but there's room for improvement in how the world and characters are presented. The potential is there, waiting to be fully explored by delving deeper into character backgrounds and elaborating on the history of the magic systems and Fabled creatures.

The cliffhanger ending left me somewhat apprehensive, especially considering how much untapped potential still remains in the first book.

What I found challenging was the characters and their dialogue, which often came across as immature and made the reading experience a bit of a struggle.

Now, here's the paradox: Despite what I've mentioned above, I can't seem to stop thinking about this book and the cliffhanger it left us with. I'm itching to dive into book two.

I'm genuinely grateful to have read Elena Moriarty's debut novel and to support an Australian author. Let me be clear, I did enjoy the book, I devoured it. And I have to confess, vampires are my literary weakness.

I want to express my thanks to the Elena Moriarty for providing me with an ARC of this book. My decision to leave this review is entirely voluntary.

I don’t think I could read a worse book if I tried. The writing is uninspired and terrible. I think I could throw a book in a blender and re-organise the pieces as I took it out of the blender and wrote a better book than this garbage. Hell maybe even a 3rd grader could write better than this. The series as a whole was awful but I got the books for $1 at a thrift store and thought why not. Immediately into the garbage once I was done. AWFUL.

I loved this so much and it left me on the floor.

I can't believe that this is a debut novel because it was such an easy and wonderful read. There is a fantastic group of characters that I can't wait to find out more about in the next books.

It is quite a fast paced story with plenty of world building and back story to fit in but it has a mystery aspect to the plot, where each new bit of information raises more questions. This definitely keeps it interesting as relationships build between the main characters.

I’m a pretty harsh critic with books but I did like this one. It won’t win any awards but it was an easy read and enjoyed the characters at play.

There was definitely room for more character development but overall, I liked it.

Cliffhanger ending was a win for me.

You can find this review and all my others over at Read Book. Repeat

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and am leaving this review voluntarily.

On the way home from a Halloween party, Tabitha's life is changed forever when she meets two strange and alluring men. Being thrust into the world of The Fabled, Tabitha must learn to navigate this new reality as she searches for the answers to her past. As if navigating the perils of adolescence wasn't enough, Tabitha also has to navigate the magnetic Felix. Is he interested in her? Does he actually like her? Or does he just see her as a way to quench his thirst?

I came across this gem on bookstagram, contacting the author after I saw her call out for readers to review her debut novel. And I must say, for a debut novel, Moriarty smashed this one and I do believe that she'll be an author to watch as she grows and develops as an author.

The story kept a nice pacing throughout and kept me engaged. I was super intrigued by Tabitha's origins, and I felt like it was unique which is fantastic. The story got moving virtually from the start. Imagine walking home from a Halloween party, then BAM! Everything you ever knew is blown up in your face. I feel like Moriarty did a fantastic job at showing how any regular person would react when confronted with something like this, that makes you question everything and wonder if you're losing your mind. The authenticity in Tabitha's reactions were real and believable and I loved that so much. Tabitha's heritage is shrouded in mystery, and it was such a fun journey to find out who she really is, and that ending! Man, I was not expecting that at all, but it honestly fit perfectly and just flowed with the story. It was out of left field but just makes me want the next instalment even more. I hate it when you get to the ending of a book, and you have those "what the hell? How did we end up here?" feels, this book didn't have that for me, AT ALL.

The characters were fun, and I loved Calum so much. He's probably my favourite at this point, though Felix does have that dark and broody thing going on, though not in an annoying mopey way. Tabitha is a strong character and I loved how she stood by her feelings and her thoughts, and she wasn't afraid to tell those around her how she was feeling. Tabitha and Felix's budding relationship did confuse me on a few occasions, as they sometimes acted younger than what I think they actually are, and I will admit, I did cringe a bit at the scene in the bar between them as the dialogue sounded like something a young teenager would say, but honestly, it didn't impact the enjoyability of the story for me, just one of those little things that my brain has hung onto. I feel that I would have liked the story even more if some of those younger sounding dialogue interactions were aged up a little. I'm pretty sure that the characters - well, Tabitha and Felix, at least - are around 20. I could be wrong, but if they are around that 20 years old mark, the dialogue did come across a little young for them. I'm hoping that we get more of an insight into why Felix was being so hot and cold with Tabitha in the next book because I'm interested to learn more on him and what motivated his actions and decisions when it came to her. Also, I developed such a soft spot for the Warlock, I cannot for the life of me remember his name. He just really endeared himself to me and I hope we see more of him!

All in all, this was a super enjoyable read, I haven't been reading as much fantasy in the past 18 months, so for this one to have pulled me in so quickly and have me engaged with the storyline just as fast, that speaks volumes for Moriarty's ability in her craft. As said in the beginning, I feel that she is definitely an author to watch, and I can't wait to see her evolve as a writer. With a unique take on the otherworldly races, I'm keen to dive deeper into this world.

This debut novel was addicting! It included humour, teenage angst, loads of magic and a self discovery journey.

The events that took place throughout the storyline were unique but mildly written in a not too serious manner which made this novel more of just a quick, fun read which I enjoyed.

The world building was was beautifully done and all the action, twists and revelations were revealed perfectly.

The characters were well developed and held a lot of amusing banter but there weren’t many character struggles with blocked my ability to connect with them on a deeper level. Their interactions together were humorous though and would have to be the highlight of this book for me.

The romance felt rushed and need more development but was still cute and held some comedic moments.

With the cliffhanger ending, I was left shocked and confused. To say I have questions is an understatement which is why I’m very intrigued to read more by this author in the sequel and discover what happens next!

Overall, a promising start to a new fantasy series!
