First a local criminal is savagely killed, then there’s another . . .
As the body count starts to mount, Detective Inspector Scott Baker and his team face a race against time to track down a serial killer who’s methodical, disturbed and unforgiving.
His boss seems grateful someone else is doing their job for them and thinks it’s all down to an internal power struggle between the factions of Brighton’s criminal underworld.
As the killings become increasingly more savage, can Scott track down the murderer before anyone else dies and before the criminal underworld implodes?
If you love police procedurals, hard boiled mysteries, or books from Damian Boyd, Angela Marsons, Helen H Durrant, Mel Sherratt, Lisa Hartley, or Kerry Wilkinson, you’ll enjoy the debut novel in the DI Scott Baker, an exciting new crime thriller and mystery series.

Crime Never Pays… Well yes and no depending on what side of the fence you’re on!
I’ve always had a strong passion for whodunnits, crime series, and books. The more I immersed myself in it, the stronger the fascination grew.
In my spare time, you’ll find me in the gym, reading, binge watching Netflix or taking walks in the forest.
Oh, and I’m an avid people watcher, I just love to watch people, their mannerisms, and their way of expressing their thoughts… weird I know, but I could spend hours doing that. It's funny, because watching people often gives me insights and inspiration for describing human interaction in my books.
Fun fact: My favourite, bestest place ever on earth? Any of the Florida theme parks and the mad coasters out there. Add the food, shopping and weather, and you've got the best place on earth... especially when I see the joy on the faces of my family when we're out there :)
Weird fact: Spending an afternoon in a mortuary to bring my books to life. Oops! poor choice of words there :)
DI Scott Baker is awakened on his day off by the telephone. It is the department requesting his assistance at the scene of a murder.
A man has been stabbed. The man has a rap sheet. Scott assumes that there are many who would hold a grudge against him. Scott sets his team to work the case. The interviews begin.
A second man is stabbed to death even more viciously than the last. He is also a small time hood. The need to solve the case ratchets up as the neighborhood denizens get nervous.
Then, a third. What is going on? This man is similar in criminal antics as the other two. The investigation expands. A link to the past is found.
This book is well written and plotted. I didn’t care for the Scott character much. I liked that he is forming a relationship with the pathologist, but it wasn’t enough to improve my opinion of him as a person. Having only read this book in the series, perhaps I am judging him too harshly. (Not knowing what has happened to him in previous novels.)
I would like to thank NetGalley and Inkubator Books for forwarding to me a copy of this good book for me to read, enjoy and review. The opinions expressed in this review are solely my own.
Greed is book one in the DI Scott Baker series by Jay Nadal. DI Scott Baker caught a case of murder local criminal. At first, it looks like an internal power struggle within the Brighton criminal underworld. However, that was not the case. DI Scott Baker had a serial killer on the loose after another murder of a local criminal. The readers of Greed will continue to follow the twists and turns into DI Scott Baker investigation into the killings of Brighton's Criminal Underworld.
Greed is the first book I have read of Jay Nadal, and I enjoyed reading it. I love the plot of Greed so different from other books I have read lately. Greed is well written and researched by Jay Nadal. Love the portrayal of the characters by Jay Nadal and the way they intertwine with each other throughout this book. I like the way Jay Nadal describes the setting of Greed; it allow me to feel part of the plot of this book.
The readers of Greed will learn about law enforcement procedures at Brighton CID. Also, the readers will learn the problems children can have when they became part of the foster care system.
This is the first book in the DI Scott Baker series and having previously read Jay Nadal’s DI Karen Heath series I knew I was in for a treat.
I am already invested in the characters, and I love the interaction between the team, even in thrillers it is good to have a bit of light-hearted moments.
Really enjoyed the story and it does make you question things, very thought provoking.
Read and reviewed for ZooLoos Book Tours, NetGalley, Goodreads, Inkubator Books and Jay Nadal.
Publication date 20th November 2022.
This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the first book in the 'DI Scott Baker' series. This book was previously independently published as 'Greed'.
I was originally drawn to this book by its absolutely fantastic, eye-catching and unique cover and its intriguing synopsis. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Inkubator. I have yet to read a book published by Inkubator Books that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue and 43 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Brighton and Hove, Sussex, England 🏴, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture.I have actually holidayed in Sussex so am intrigued to see if I recognise places based on anywhere I visited while there.
This book is written in third person perspective with the main protagonists being DI Scott Baker and the killer The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions that really set the scene and kept me on the edge of my seat. The cover and synopsis suited the storyline perfectly.
This is the first book in the 'DI Scott Baker' series and what an absolutely fantastic start to what promises to be a gripping series. It is a really fast paced page turner with a really gripping and gritty storyline that takes you on a rollercoaster ride of suspense, tension and crime and kept me on the edge of my seat. The storyline was unique and once I got stuck in I couldn't stop turning the pages. It is packed with murder, tension, crime, suspense and ticks every box you could ask for in a gripping crime thriller. I love the fact that it is set in Brighton and the author really sets the scene for the reader making it feel like you are with Scott and the team throughout. I love the fact that the ending is tied up perfectly so there are no loose ends left, one of my pet hates in books. I enjoyed seeing what was happening through the eyes of the killer and trying to work out why they were doing what they were. One of the most unique things in this book for me is that I actually felt sorry for the killer and could understand why he was doing what he was. It is very thought provoking as it makes the reader question (well it did with me anyway) the law and personally I wondered if anything should have been done at the end as they were actually doing the world a favour. This book would make a fantastic choice for book clubs and would bring up some great debates when talking about it. I have to be careful I don't say too much as I don't want to give anything away. Needless to say I am looking forward to reading the next book in this promising series which is called 'The Stolen Girls'.
It is always worrying when starting a new series as you have no idea who the characters are. It is very important for me to bond with not only the lead protagonists but also any characters that may make repeat appearances during the series too. Strangely it is important that I connect with the pathologist/s too as they tend to play large parts in police procedurals. Thankfully this wasn't a problem in this book.
It wasn't just the storyline I was completely invested in but also the characters. I really liked Scott and thought that he worked excellently with his team and made a great leader. My heart went out to him after losing his family and I really hope that he finds happiness. I loved the banter between Scott and his team and amongst his team members. It is always great to have some laughter in crime books as it lightens the story up a bit. All of the characters were strong and believable. Mike, Abby and Raj all made a great team and worked well together with plenty of banter and sarcasm between them all which made me laugh several times. I also really liked the pathologist Cara Hall who was full of life (pardon the pun), sarcastic and great at her job. I loved watching the bond between Cara and Scott develop throughout and I hope that it goes somewhere. I am definitely looking forward to seeing what happened between them in 'The Stolen Girls'. I am looking forward to meeting them all again and I think they are going to become one of my favourites.
An absolutely fantastic start to what promises to be an addictive series and I'm looking forward to reading the next book which will hopefully be soon!! Congratulations Jay Nadal on a fantastic page turner and here's to your next success 🥂!!
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the prologue and first chapter of Jay's 'The Stolen Girls' which promises to be just as addictive as this book and I cannot wait to get stuck into it!!!
Overall an absolutely page turning and explosive start to what promises to be an addictive series.
Genres covered in this book include Psychological Thriller, Crime, English Crime, Serial Killers, Thriller, Suspense, Mystery, Police Thriller, Police Procedural, Hard-boiled Mysteries, Psychological Fiction and Noir Crime amongst others.

I enjoyed the storyline, although slightly clichéd yet rather appropriate in this book.
The lead characters in this story, I found that they are rather shallow, very little depth added to the characters which I felt would have added much more feeling to the overall storyline and given the book a much more bite.
Story line is fairly bland and predictable. The author tries too hard to create personalities for the characters each ending up a bland stereotype as the fat one, the over worked one, the funny one, etc etc without developing any depth. The overuse of adjectives really grates after a while. Perhaps ok to read lying on a beach when you don’t want to concentrate or be too absorbed but there are plenty of better versions of this genre out there.
This is the first book in the DI Scott Baker series and I loved it! A serial killer is loose and his calling card is leaving money in the mouths if his victims. Who is the killer? And what do the victims have in common? Follow DI Baker in this trolling page turner!

Time To Die by Jay Nadal They thought the past was dead and buried. But now it’s back to haunt them. A local criminal is savagely killed, then another . . . As the body count grows, Detective Inspector Scott Baker and his team are caught in a race against time as they hunt for a serial killer who is at once methodical and deeply disturbed. Really enjoyed this book. Love Scott and Cara. 5*.
I have had this book on my Kindle for soooo long and I don’t know why I have left it this long to read! It was so good! I’m buzzing to see that there are so many more in the series because I loved it!!
The prologue hooks you in straight away with a grisly murder, but we have no idea who the killer is or why they are killing their victim. The book then changes POV to that of Detective Scott Baker, who has been woken up on his day off to the news of the murder. The book follows Scott and his colleagues as they investigate the death and try to find the person responsible. Their investigation quickly has to become fast paced as another murder happens with the same motif, and then another one again. The book itself was very fast paced with the new murders taking place and the team having to respond to new theories.
I liked the team around Scott, I’m hoping we get to learn a lot more about them as we move through the series as I feel like they could all be such interesting characters. I’m especially intrigued to learn more about Abby’s life as we know that she is struggling a little bit to balance police life with her personal life. Scott had good banter with the guys, and obviously there’s hopefully a lot more to come with his relationship with Cara, although I fear his past traumatic experiences may hold him back.
This was a really great, interesting and captivating police procedural novel. I would never have worked out who the killer was so it was definitely cleverly plotted! Some quite gruesome parts too in relation to the murders and the post mortems which always makes for an interesting read!
I really enjoyed this book; I'd never read anything by this author before but will certainly be looking out for their other books.
Set in Brighton, at first this seems like a power struggle between different factions of the city's criminal underworld but turns out to be so much more than that.
I liked the make-up of the DI Baker's team, and the interplay between them. This book was quite deceptive, as it drew me in, without me even realising that it was happening. As I became more invested in the story, I found myself promising "just one more chapter", which we all know means, "I have to finish this".
I'm looking forward to more books in this series, and others written by the author.

Fast paced, never slowing down great character development, and these characters already feel like friends! I had guessed who the murderer had to be, in which I was basically right. But the back story changes everything! As does DI Scott Baker's past, which would be incredibly hard to deal with! I can't wait to continue reading to find out if the DI decides to honor his past with a happy future, or if he decides to just stay in situ. To find out how is DS makes it through her struggles , and to laugh at the two make DC's that are trying to our eat each other! Whatever happens, I think I'm going to enjoy it all!
Three seemingly related murders but DI Baker and his team find it hard to tie it all together until just a chance suggestion by the pathologist sets them off on the right path. The plot is not too weak, but it seems to rush to a conclusion instead of slowly building up to an arrest. Just too much description of what people were wearing, which had no real point, too much geographic scenery, it’s a murder plot not Lonely Planet, and just too much extraneous fluff.
Time to Die was the first book in the series following DI Scott Baker. This book also my first read from the author.
The story started very strong and the plot is intrigued me. The police procedural tidy described and the characters is memorable. The banter between characters kinda off but the plot, pace, twist and POV are strong enough to make me engaging into the story till the end.
Thank you Netgalley and Inkubator Books for provided me with this copy. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
It was ok I suppose. I’m a bit disappointed as I’ve read other books by this author and really enjoyed them but this was very ploddy. I didn’t learn enough about the characters to like or dislike them. It seemed like a very weak plot and just drifted along. I was waiting for a massive twist or something which never happened so I won’t read anymore of this particular series. I need gritty and exciting and this definitely wasn’t any of those things. Thankfully i got this book free so only my time was wasted.
It was a grate read, the policing was very methodical, and could be some what a bit slow at times. The title gave the reason away from the very beginning so all you are left with is who dun it, and I did work that out quite quickly even though I did not have a name. I would read another from this author but would have to read something in between first, as I would thought other novels could be a bit identical, although I hope not.
Having downloading the free sample book introducing DI Scott and really enjoying it I thought first full length book in this series was great. Loved the interesting story, found the characters gelled together nicely and the pace was fast keeping interested throughout. Looking forward to starting book 2 a new author I would recommend thank you.
Thought I would give this series a go having read the Karen Heath set. Not disappointed at all with this introduction to DI Baker. Been a good read getting introduced to his team and his personal tragic past. We have murders that all link to a case from a few years ago. What is the link? Read and enjoy to find out.
A real look into the process of tracking down murders. DI Scott Baker and his team, track down what appears to be a serial killer. A nonstop stop read, with lots of Police procedures the team needs to go though to solve their cases.
Really enjoyed this first of the series, jumped about a little in places but remained fast paced and easily followed. Good characters bein built here too. Straight into the next one!!
Interesting premise. Good characters. Entertaining read. Only issue is the occasional need to try and decipher some of the English words and phrasing. I will definitely read more of Mr Nadal’s books.
I would like to thank the author, the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. I hadn't read anything by this author previously but I will definitely be reading more of them in future. It was a well written book with great characters.
This is a police procedural. It wasn’t a bad book. It just didn’t move as quickly as what I’m used to, but don’t let that stop you. The pace is okay, and the different POV move it along. I just prefer books where the killer is a twist.
