Nicholas Harwood inherited an unusual job—keeping the dead quiet in Dante’s Hollow. Generations of his family before him had been charged with the same. It should have been easy. Over the years, the Harwoods developed a potion to pour on the graves to keep the dead from walking.
As All Hallows’ Eve approaches, the barrier between the living and the dead is at its thinnest. It’s the most pivotal time for Harwood’s job. But something—in addition to snow—is in the wind, and he can’t stop it alone. Nicholas and his unlikely group of companions must face off against the rogue supernatural powers before they can unleash great evil.
In this paranormal historical suspense, Nicholas Harwood has an important job—to keep the dead in the graveyard where they belong. Nicholas’ job at the apothecary has been passed down to him through the generations in the town of Dante’s Hollow where spellcasters, witches, and sometimes the dead, roam free. When a group of witches seek to unleash evil, Nicholas bands together with the recently deceased Abigail Spencer, her nephew Gabriel, her former housekeeper Siobhan, and a magical cat named Ciarán, to stop them.
The story is told in multiple viewpoints by an interesting cast of characters, both good and evil, with interesting abilities. Each character has a distinctive personality, and a purpose in the grand scheme of the narrative, breathing life into the story and making for an engaging reading experience.
One of the most important components of storytelling in this genre is the worldbuilding. The author does a fantastic job establishing a magic system and setting parameters for how her fictional world works. She strikes a perfect balance in giving the reader enough details to understand what’s happening without slowing the pace of her plotting.
Fans of Deborah Harkness and Simone St-James will enjoy this spooky magical read.
I found Augustina Van Hoven’s Harbinger: A Supernatural Suspense Novella, to be an absolutely stunning and intriguing story. I’ve always loved ghosts, but to have a job to keep the dead quiet is not a job I’d want, having met my share of ghosts, But Harbinger is an exciting and innovative ghost story. In it you found a variety of different types of ghosts, in this suspense-filled story. It held my attention from page one and kept me glued to my seat until I was finished. I highly recommend this short novella. A definite must reread.
