She’s about to have the night of her life. Over and over again.
At twenty-five, Lauree Miller knows what she should want — a serious job, a serious boyfriend, the ability to cook a meal that doesn’t involve two types of cheese.
Who cares if it isn’t the future she had in mind for herself? It’s about time she stopped pining over her best friend’s brother, Max, anyway.
New Years Eve is a time for resolutions, and as the clock ticks closer to midnight, Lauree makes a decision - next year, she’s going to let go of the past and finally grow up.
Except when she wakes, it’s still December 31st. Then it happens again. And again. And again.
What’s a girl trapped in a time loop to do?
Will kissing the right man at midnight set her free?
Dani McLean is a Bi/NB Australian author who writes shamelessly fun contemporary romance with an open-bedroom-door policy. She loves coffee, karaoke, and stories that make you kick your feet up in the air. If lost, she can be found on Ao3, or echo located through her kookaburra laugh.
I saved this for the end of the year to match my mood, but I would have DNFd this if it hadn't been a novella. And I wish I had, because I especially hated the ending.
As a whole, I didn't enjoy this story, because it made the timeloop trope feel completely mundane in a really boring way. It took all of the fun right out of it.
But the ending really cemented my dislike, because the thing that gets the MC out of her timeloop is when she has sex with the love interest. Confessing their love wasn't enough, a kiss wasn't enough, talking through their pasts and communicating wasn't enough, they had to have sex for the ~magic~, I guess. I completely dislike this message as an asexual person - a romance or relationship are not more real if you add sex to them, and their validity shouldn't hinge on sex.
Midnight, Repeated was a great read following a woman stuck in a time loop on New Year's Eve.
At twenty-five, Lauree Miller still doesn't know what she wants out of life but she can't keep daydreaming of a future with her best friend's brother. As the new year looms on the horizon, Lauree resolves to make this the year she finally lets go of the past and grows up. But when she wakes up the next day, it's still December 31st. And then it happens again. And again. Stuck in a time loop, Lauree realizes she may finally have the chance to take the risks she's been too afraid to take in real life.
The premise of Midnight, Repeated sounded interesting as I really enjoy the movie Groundhog Day so I was curious to see how that would translate to book form. The book starts out with Lauree getting ready to attend a New Year's Eve party hosted by Max, her best friend's brother. We follow her until midnight before the book cuts to Lauree waking up the next day not realizing she's living the same day again. It was interesting watching her realize she's in a time loop and it initially goes how you would expect with Lauree taking risks and doing whatever she wants since everything resets the next day. After a while that starts to get old and Lauree decides to use this time to figure out what it is she wants out of life. She takes up several new hobbies and gets the opportunity to try things over and over until she gets them right. Ultimately Lauree is in this time loop for six months and I liked how the author chose to handle the passing of time.
During this time Lauree is working out her feelings for Max which is difficult to do as any conversations she has with him, he forgets when the day resets. Personally I thought it was obvious right from the start that Max had feelings for Lauree but because of the pair's history she doesn't see it. I do feel like we didn't get to know Max that well and I wish we had gotten more time to know him. The pair's romance develops slowly over the course of the book and I liked how that went. I will say there weren't many steamy scenes until near the end and I would have liked more of those.
Overall Midnight, Repeated was a ton of fun and I really enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend this one if you're looking for a unique read.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
This novella didn’t work for me. Doing the time loop or the Groundhog Day premise can be challenging and here neither the characters or the story did the plot justice. It just became boring because of the same thing happened and the characters lacked depth. I wasn’t interested or invested.
First time reading this author and she delivered a fast paced novella about a woman learning how to be who she wants to be while repeating the same day over and over again.
It's a sweet friends to lovers romance. Lauree is someone relatable to many readers because she's lost and avoids changes. The idea of setting this story in the New Year's Eve was a fantastic idea and well planned and I liked how the author made Lauree push herself quickly. I was expecting her to be more resistant and avoid moving forward with her resolve but it didn't happen.
I wished this was a full length novel though. I know it can be tiring to the author and reader having the same day in loop but it would've been interesting to get a deeper view from Lauree and Max past, their backstory and until the recent day. I think it would make us connect more with them as couple instead of being instant.
If you're looking for a fast read to help you get out of a slump or because you're looking for a lighter read, this is a solid novella. I'm rating it 4 stars by thinking of it as novella and what it has to deliver.
Thank you NetGalley for the arc in exchange for my honest opinion and review.
I’m not typically not a fan of time loop romances, but the author did a really fantastic job of keeping each repeating day fresh and new. I also loved how she utilized shorter and longer chapters throughout.
I really related to Lauree and her internal struggle of not knowing what she wants to do with her life. Her growth through the time loops was fantastic and I loved that she eventually found her thing.
I wish there would have been a little more tension between Lauree and Matt. Building that in a time loop scenario is tough, for sure, but I found their relationship to be a tad stale without it. The spicy scene at the end was fantastic, though. I wanted that energy through the entire book!!
I loved this time loop romance sooo much!! Lauree is 25 and floundering. Her boyfriend doesn't see a forever with her, her job doesn't make her happy AND she's still in love with her childhood friend/crush neighbor, Max.
When she wake's up to find she's stuck in an endless New Year's Eve time loop she decides to take advantage of the opportunity to try new things, be brave and take a chance on true love.
This really was a perfect second chance, slow burn holiday romance with a deliciously steamy scene at the end. My only disappoint was that it was a novella because I wanted more of Lauree and Max!! Recommended for fans of books like See you yesterday by Rachel Lynn Soloman. Much thanks to NetGalley and the author for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review.
two stars! ⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ i did not even realize this was a novella until i finished it within an hour or so and i was like… what? guess i probably should pay more attention to details lmao.
anyways, this wasn’t necessarily a bad novella, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. i’ve read a couple books with the groundhog day plotline and honestly i think that’s a very hard plot to write, especially in novella form. i feel like it just wasn’t explored enough and the length of the novel didn’t do it justice. i mean, the main character went through the same day for half a year apparently and we only got to see like 20ish different days? it felt way too spread out to the point where it was just absurd. and it didn’t even really bother the main character? she kinda just… accepted it. idk.
i also wasn’t a huge fan of both the writing and the characters. the characters felt very one dimensional, very flat, no real personality or anything of interest. the romance wasn’t really all that great either, if i’m being honest. i didn’t really feel like it was genuine, ig. there was no real development or anything, it seemed. the writing felt very repetitive and pretty simplistic, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but i just feel like with the plot it needed to be a little more developed!
overall, just not really my cup of tea, unfortunately!
huge thank you to netgalley for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review!!
I love the unexplainable magic of time-loop romances; the way it forces the character(s) to reflect on their lives and happiness. But as you can tell from my rating, I didn't enjoy this particular book.
It's New Year's Eve and Lauree is stuck in a life that doesn't bring her joy. Her boyfriend is a dud, her job is the worst, and she can't seem to stop thinking about her neighbour (and best friend's brother), Max. With a resolution in mind for the new year, Lauree instead gets unexpectedly thrust into a never-ending loop of December 31st.
186 repeated days, to be exact. Yes, 186! It was an absurd amount. This is a novella (131 pages), so you'd think having that much time crammed into a story would feel rushed, but I had the opposite problem.
It was very monotonous. Filled with many chapters of Lauree simply living life, learning to bake, I felt nothing was propelling the story in an exciting way. Of course there are interactions with Max, but unfortunately their relationship was a little lacklustre for me, too.
(heat level: one open-door scene, explicit details)
Hello I'm back! Ramadhan is such a special month to me that I couldn't waste it reading so much as before (This one I read on my period). And it's a lovely book!
On the 31 of December, you are the girlfriend of someone you don't really love, but you are committed to him and you are waiting for him to propose.
You work a job that is killing you with boredom but you don't have another thing to do. You feel like your creativity has dried up and you're old to begin again.
You are invited to your friend's New Year's party and you can't help but watch him from afar and wish he would love you back and would be the one for you.
And you wake up the next morning repeating the 31 of December OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Before the new year finally comes to you: you need to really work hard for your wishes and true heart desires ^_^
I loved It Has To Be You so I figured I’d try this one but it was just wasn’t for me. The time loop drove me insane and it was too “Disney Movie” for me.
I received a copy from netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This novella was written in third POV. Which is my worst nightmare. Considering I’m giving this 3 stars, it was bearable for me.
I really don’t know how else this book could be written. I feel like the Groundhog Day concept is something that could be written really well or not at all. There were times where it became super repetitive (obviously), but there were also a little bit of self discovery for the heroine Lauree.
I was a bit confused in the beginning as to who the love interest was. And I’m not too sure how Max just sometimes popped up I don’t know where. I’m not sure if I just missed a part describing that he was already there or something, I have no idea. A few chapters in, my brain finally figured out who are hero is.
If you’re looking for a cute, friends to lovers, novella while being stuck in this time loop this is the one for you.
Lauree is trapped in a time loop on New Years Eve. Right after she decided she wanted to make changes in her life. Her best friends brother, Max, being one of them. She can’t hold out for someone who has made clear doesn’t like her that way.
This was super cute! I love that Max and her start out as just friends. He’s super shy, it’s so cute honestly. I love how the loop gave her the time to figure out who she truly is and what she wants in life. I felt like the book started out a little off, and I didn’t care for the large jumps, but other than that it was a really interesting short story!
*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review with my honest opinion.*
“You shouldn’t ever have to change for someone, Lauree. You’re great as you are.”
♥️
It’s New Years Eve and Lauree is ready to party the night away, despite the uneasiness she feels about her miserable job, the uncertainty she feels towards her boyfriend and the unrelenting feelings towards her best friend, Max. When she wakes up the next morning, she comes to the stunning realisation that she’s living the same day again. And again and again.
What you’ll find: ⏰ Time loop ♥️ Friends to lovers 🔥 Tension and pining 🧁 Lots of baking 😍 Love confessions ❤️🔥 Slow burn 🌶 Spice
I absolutely loved this novella! I wasn’t sure about it going in, but it was an absolute delight. Well written, nicely paced, and from the POV of Lauree, who was a fun character to read. I loved that she used the time loop to really explore her passions, beyond her love for Max. I also enjoyed how their relationship developed, despite him forgetting everything once the day was over. I think this was very well done and I highly recommend it!
Thanks to #NetGalley for the ARC and the opportunity to leave an honest review.
Midnight, Repeated follows Lauree falling in to a time loop on New Years eve and she needs to figure out how to get herself out of this loop.
I'll admit it took me a bit to figure out what was going on exactly with the love interests in this book. I think they were introduced pretty quickly and confusingly (at least for me) but once I figured out what was going on it was a pretty nice read. It probably wouldn't be too high on my recommendations but I did enjoy it and I would read other books by this author if given the opportunity.
3/5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and the author for this copy to review.
“I just want to be in love with you a little longer.”
First festive read of the season! Perhaps I should’ve kept it for New Year’s but I needed a quick pick-me-up novella in between my other current reads. Specifically, a seasonal one. ❄️☃️
For this particular story, our main character is stuck in this loop of repeating New Year’s Eve over and over again without knowing exactly why this is happening to her or what she’s supposed to achieve. This is one of those stories where we - as readers - figure things out alongside the main character. It’s a tricky concept for a novella because it requires time and space. I think the author did the best they could given the number of pages; however, I found that I was missing something throughout the book.
I was missing that connection between the characters originating from time spent together. With the same day repeated over and over again, everything erased for other people other than our FMC, it was a bit difficult to connect to these characters and believe in the feelings expressed 😩. It almost felt like both everything and nothing really happened in the end.
I have to admit I enjoyed the themes of self-discovery, acceptance, and finding the courage to go after what you desire. 🤍 although I do wish we had more time with these characters so we could witness their journey fully.
Lauree is tired. Tired of her job, tired of her current boyfriend's antics, and tired of being in love with her best friend's older brother, Max.
It's New Year's Eve, and Lauree is ready to become the full fledged adult she's meant to be. Lauree wakes up the morning after, only to realize that it’s STILL December 31st…nothing quite like starting your “new year” in a time loop. Can she break the cycle and finally make it to January 1st?
I adored this. What a great concept for a novella! Novellas are meant to be done short and sweet, and this variation of short and sweet packed a punch. Through the time loops, she used her time to have fun and do all the things she never could in real life. She also used some of that time to find and develop new passions. After about half a year’s worth of time loops, Lauree was at the end of her rope. She was frustrated with her situation and I was genuinely frustrated for her. I wanted her to find that “happy ever after” for herself and finally make it to New Year’s Day.
I loved relishing in the sweetness that was Max and his free coffees and endless care for Lauree. They were pivotal pillars in each other’s lives, so not wanting to ruin that was definitely understandable, but I JUST KEEPT CONSTANTLY (INTERNALLY) SCREAMING AT THEM TO GET TOGETHER!!
As mentioned in the author’s note, “the magic of these stories is never explained” and being stuck in a time loop is one of those tropes that never truly has a rhyme or reason, but this novella really worked for me. It got me thinking about what I would do if I was stuck in an endless time loop...sleep all day? Read all the books?? DO ALL THE THINGS?? No idea, but I loved Lauree living through her endless days and getting her life on the track she was destined to be on.
I can’t wait to read the rest of the Movie Magic Novella series!! Thank you so much to Dani McLean for the copy! Can't thank you enough. :')
this is how every romance book should be written. fast paced, sappy at times and god damn amazing. Lauree was the best main character and I really liked her crazy, chaotic persona. the journey she went on throughout the novel was really enjoyable to read.! her self discovery and journey of love was really lovely 😌 Max was the BEST male mc ever. he’s so sweet and caring and literally everything you could possibly want in a bf 😭 I loved that they were childhood friends and they experienced the same path and it’s one of my all-time fave tropes so that was also a win ✨ the pace of the book was perfect and I read it essentially in one go, I also loved that it was based around christmas and new year as that is one of my favourite times of the year ☺️ it was just super cosy and cute and I just loved it so much!! I would definitely recommend this to a friend and I am 100% going to continue the series when it gets released!! 🤩
The way I loved this novella so much!!! Ahhh, Midnight Repeated was an absolute romantic masterpiece, I loved everything about it including all the loops. I’ve never read a book with a loop theme and I’m so glad this one was the first one. I fell for Lauree and Max and found myself rooting not only for her and Max but for Lauree in particular.
I feel like we’ve all been there at some point in our life where we second guess if the path we’re on is the one we should be in. The author does a fantastic job at repeating the loops to where it doesn’t feel redundant or boring and gives them a purpose.
The way I cried of happiness at the end!! If you’re looking for a cute, romantic read with just a sprinkle of spice, Midnight Repeated is the perfect one for you!!
Cute and fun. I like the way the author achieved a time loop without it getting super repetitive and boring. It’s a super quick read that’s easy to get lost in for an hour.
Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
In the fictional city of Chance anything can happen and Lauree getting stuck in a time loop at midnight on New Years makes sense in this story.
I love how the author coaxed Lauree into finding a passion during her many months stuck in the loop and it got me pondering what I would choose to do if given time for do overs. The only catch being that everything around her resets each night only for her to remember and experience personal growth. It was a great way to see character growth in the MC.
I greatly wish we had more interaction for the best friend and sister to the male lead in this book.
Thank you for the opportunity to leave my honest review with an ARC for Midnight, Repeated!

Dani always knows exactly what my heart needs. I’m forever grateful for the words she shares. This novella is ooey gooey sweet and swooney! I was giddy going into this, because I loved the premise. A magical place where days repeating felt like a normal thing, and not completely out of this world. But getting to experience it was even better! All these years loving cheesy weird Hallmark small towns has made this even more magical! Lauree and Max met when she was 15 and moved next door, and she became best friends with his sister. The snag in the cute crush she developed? He was 19. It was infatuation at first sight. The only thing 10 years of growing up did was turn that crush into love. Especially since they’re all grown up and neighbors all over again! I became fond of Max instantly. He’s exactly the kind of person worthy of Lauree’s heart. And I decided that right away. He remembered details about her that was just too much for my heart. Everything about them was sweet and adorable. I wanted to squeal half of the time. And it only continued to get sweeter! But this wasn’t all sweet! We get to experience a journey with Lauree that I think a lot of us go through. She just has time on her side. Lauree loves reruns because they’re comfortable, finds it satisfying to pile unwanted things into bags and dragging them out of the house, makes more crumbs than actually getting the food into her mouth, a heartless man made her feel like she’s not enough, and chocolate fixes everything. Is this book about me?!
My Favorite Quotes: • “I like your mess.” • “You’re really something.” • “I’d miss you too much if you weren’t in my life every day.” • “I wish you could see what I see when I look at you.” • “I just want to be in love with you a little longer.” • “But it’s never more important than you.” • “I don’t want to be lost anymore.” • “There’s not a version of you I couldn’t like.” • “I always want to kiss you.” • “Then you’ll help me remember.” • “I just need you to remember.” • “I love you. So much that I think if I stopped, I would cease to exist” • “I wish that I could have told you how much I love you every single day.” • “I’m miserable without you.” • “You’re everything, do you hear me? 5/10 Dirty Birdy 9/10 Friends to Lovers 5/10 BFF’s Brother 8/10 Slow Burn 9/10 Series
3.5 stars. This was a pretty cute friends to lovers novella. It's a groundhog's day time loop story set on NYE and I was worried that it would get repetitive really quickly but it didn't. The author managed to keep it fresh by showing different parts of the day and the changes in each day. I appreciated that the FMC used the time loop to discover herself- I definitely related to the feeling that everyone else around you knows what they want and is making it happen while you just work your boring dead end job. The story was sweet and it was a super quick read- I think it would have been even if it wasn't a novella. The writing was okay and while the story was cute, it overall felt a bit flat. The characters didn't have much depth and even their decades long friendship felt dull. I couldn't even remember what they looked like- I had to look at the (frickin adorable) cover a few times to remember. The one steamy scene was... not good. And I could have done without the last sentence of the entire novella having the word "precum" in it.
Overall, I think if you're looking to read a quick romance to get our of reading slump- this is a good fit.
I received this novella as an arc from the author in exchange for an honest review.
