Academy In Flames Box Set: Books 1 - 9

Rate this book
This box set includes the entire bestselling Academy in Flames series, featuring majestic magic, daring dragons, and a tale of adventure you won’t ever forget.

All my life I wanted to be a respected dragon rider. That is, until I met my phoenix.”

Ana de Navalles has almost nothing, aside from her friends. Having always been a child of the slums, her fortunes change when she’s admitted to Galfour’s Point, the prestigious and almost-mythical academy, and the only place in the world where you can train to become a dragon rider.

Just before she is set to leave, her friend Cien is murdered before her by a mob-affiliated criminal with surprising strength. But Ana does not cower. With dark magic seemingly on the rise, her hunger to make something of herself – and thirst for revenge – is revived.

After mere days at the academy, Ana is beginning to feel like the odd one out. A poor slum-dweller in a school of snobbish rich kids, all eyes are on her, and if she can’t pass her entrance exams, she’ll be kicked out without so much of a glance at a dragon.

So when she discovers a young phoenix, newly hatched, and quickly establishes a bond with the precocious and unpredictable creature, Ana’s suddenly the talk of the academy. If, that is, she can convince the school authorities to let them stay.

As Ana and her friends – some new and some old – prepare to investigate Cien’s murder, nefarious forces within the academy, and outside in the wider world conspire against them. Can Ana and Fyrenza – her newly named phoenix - rise from the ashes, and shine bright upon a cruel world?

Good plot but sadly ....

It has a good plot, but no real depth. Also some great characters but they show very little growth throughout the entire book set. The suspense which could of been there just wasn't. The main characters get their butts kicked by the evil chatacter and later in the book an individual beats the evil even though now she is twice as powerful. If your looking for a great fantasy book that you can't put down I'm sorry and sadly to say this isn't it.

Worst editing ever, mediocre character development

The storyline was so-so. The character development was somewhat lacking and the strength of the relationships not fully believable. But, by far, the most egregious flaws were the editing. The author consistently wrote the name of the wrong person throughout the book. Such as within two sentences saying something as simple as Brax went up the mountain while Aelred, Pepin and Brax went down the mountain. The most glaring transgression is when the author changed a character’s name halfway through a chapter. Literally, one minute the character’s name is Abigail. Halfway through, it changes to Amelia. A few chapters later the name Abigail makes a brief appearance before going back to Amelia. It was painful to read and if I had not been reading this with my daughter I would have abandoned it after book 1.

Academy in Flames Box Set

This is a great set of consecutive stories written by Scarlett Reid. She has a fun and captivating writing style that keeps her readers involved in her stories from one book to the next. I love to read stories with lots of books because I know they will provide me with hours of reading time, and with this many books, the story lines have to be good.

Ana and her friends are part of a magical community. Ana, Pepin, and Brax go to an esteemed school of magic, and her other two friends, Ginger and Aelred, live nearby. Throughout the series, they encounter bad guys in their school and in multiple cities on their continent. Of course, Ana is impulsive and has restless energy that tends to land her in trouble, and she's bonded with her Phoenix, Fyrenza, so they can communicate telepathically. Their adventures take on some pretty dangerous groups. One group, The Knowing, wants to take over the world, and they captured Fyrenza in order to figure out how they too can become eternal. They also captured Ginger to harness her natural and uncontrollable powerful magic to increase their own powers. Throughout a few books, Ana and the boys take it upon themselves to free both Fyrenza and Ginger. There's another evil group that works for The Knowing. The Blood Brothers live in the mountain regions and seem to find Ana and her friends during their quests. In one of the books, The Council removes Headmaster Whitlock from duty and replaces him with a powerful council woman who is part of The Knowing. Her goal is to aid The Knowing to gain control of the Academy as well as to keep a close eye on Ana. Rather than destroy or imprison her, The Knowing want her to join their ranks so they can utilize her magic as well as her Phoenix's. In the end, Ana and her friends capture or kill off the bad guys and free their world of these evil people.

These stories are good for tweens and teens who enjoy magical stories with dragons, a Phoenix, a strong female lead, a bit of clean preeteen romance, and a generally safe school environment to learn in. There are grammatical errors in all the books. Also, there are several instances where the Phoenix is referred to as a dragon, the dragons are called different names from their own, the boys' names are interchanged within and between sentences and paragraphs. This entire series needs better proofreading. Other than that, it was a good read. I finished a book or more a day. So they didn't take too long to read. I do recommend this series. Just remember, it's on a younger reader level, not to older teen to young adult groups.

Academy in Flames tells the story of Ana, a phoenix rider from the plains who, with very little experience of magic, goes up against The Knowing, an organisation of dark magic users intent on taking control of the continent. Naturally Ana prevails, despite having limited knowledge/resources, which in and of itself is unbelievable, but I guess you have to put that fact on one side to enjoy these kind of books. And I did enjoy Academy in Flames, hence the 3 star rating, but the whole thing was far too long. The story could have just as easily been told across 5 books if all of the repetition had been removed. And it could have done with a bit of oomph. The story telling was a bit flat.

Absolutely a fantabulous page turner!

This series was indubitably one of the best I've read in a while. As a mother of teens, I truly appreciate the wholesomeness of the series. So I can share this with my kids. I love the details and descriptions of the characters after the first book I felt like I knew them and I could anticipate the reactions as if I knew them on a personal basis. Which makes the books totally more relatable to me. And let's not forget the snarky sarcastic characters that cracked me up.

Good series

Overall, this is a really good series. I might have rated this higher, but in reading the ebook, I had to stop and submit several errors for review. Also, the main character kept making the same decisions/mistakes without learning from them for far too long in the series, but that is just my opinion.
The storytelling was well done, and the plot kept me entertained. It was simply some ebook editing and the main character's refusal to learn that took away from this story.

Great fun story

I absolutely loved the story of Ana and her journey of finding & losing friends, along with finding herself. I will say it had a lot of editing errors that became a bit annoying at times (mixing up character names, words, etc). That's why I knocked a star off. But I truly hope this didn't end on a cliff hanger and there was at least a follow up story to not leave the reader with so many questions at the end. I would recommend to others as a light read to escape life & have a fun journey.

Good storyline

The storyline is good, each book followed on nicely.
It is very Americanized.
There was a lot spelling errors and ( for me...) Sentences were not complete. Let me explain. The American term " come with " is used a lot through out the set, to British folk it it would be " come with me, or you or us ". Also it mentions Fyrensa " lit " off the ground, never heard that before, confused me as it appeared to me as it should be lifted.
Apart from the things mentioned, it was an entertaining set of books.

Good story, terrible editing

The story line and character building was enjoyable. If there had not been so many errors, it would have gotten five stars. Errors include spelling errors, but the worst errors was the mixing up of the characters. Several times the characters were mixed (switched) up in paragraphs and sentences. This book series needs a good proofreader and editor. Sometimes lack of these will sink a good story. Suggest the author take care of these issues and update the book. It really detracts from the enjoyment.

Reasonable story dreadful editing

I would have enjoyed these books far more had it not been for the dreadful editing, or lack of editing, which was particularly bad at the end of the series.

Not only was bad grammar missed but characters names were mixed up regularly and dragons and Phoenix somehow become interchangeable.

The story line was entertaining although I found the main character to be unbelievably reckless and occasionally arrogant.

Academy In Flames books 1 - 9

Wow! I am astounded that at almost 80 years old I have just devoured these books. I usually read the same authors because they are familiar to me, but I took a chance and they are well written, well edited (very few errors that I caught) and a wonderful read. Now, I can't wait for more and I know that could include Ana, Brax and many more. I'll be watching closely for any books by Scarlett Reid. Thank you for the entertainment.

Absolutely hot

A wonderfully written series which is pulling you in right from the beginning. The perfectly described characters going from being "normal" people to undeniable heroes in their aim to do what is right. Friendship , honour, betrayal, happiness and love, pain and death are all becoming part of their lives. Pushed into adventures and quests this is a series I can recommend to anyone fascinated by reading books you can get lost in time.

A Great Series!

Truly Great character and story development. Plenty of drama, action, suspended and romance with class! Loved the DEEP commitment and bonds all showed and how the author made them so human . These characters will stay in your mind and heart long after you finish this series. It's totally worth a read. You will find yourself page turning as fast as you can. Enjoy!

I enjoyed this series quite a bit. I tend to enjoy academy series because the characters are diverse and this series did not disappoint. I wasn't always on the edge of my seat but it was a good read well written. Also ok for YA which was refreshing because a lot of times there's an epic read but I can't share it with my daughter because wink wink she's not old enough yet but this one I'm excited for my daughter to read.

written to fill pages

Repetitive explanations about the same things to fill pages.
A protagonist who loves to feel sorry for herself.
If this is adult fiction, it is horrible.
Amazon and Goodreads need to provide a better way to search and SEE the info on iPads. Ridiculous tiny text a book covers.

Good story...not-so-good with editing

This was an engaging story. Characters were well developed. I had a problem with editing or lack of it. There were several errors throughout each book in the series. Typos that were glaringly obvious. The author needs to find a good editor. It's the difference between a good story and a great one.

A Smoking hot series

Young People who are head strong and adventurous. The characters come alive in this series. It includes magic and growing into it. It shows how hard work pays off. If there is anything bad to be said, I had to think hard. What I liked least was a few of the editing mistakes. Other that a totally worthwhile series. Good in the future.

A rocky start but an excellent series overall

This started out as a fairly typical teen/YA story and I was all set to give up on it when the star of the show, Firenza the phoenix, arrived on the scene. From then on it has been an excellent series. I thoroughly recommend it to any fantasy fan whatever your age.

Kept my interest from beginning to end

This was a great series and I'm glad I read it as a box set. I think because there was no stopping and starting it just read as a well written long book with characters you can relate too and enough different situations being handled to keep you intrigued and satisfied till the end, without any bits that drag. Thank you.

a total world unfurled

I lived the characters and the story and their progress through righting the wrongs of the world they grew up in. I had to skip some of the inner spinning of the mostly main characters’ minds because I thought it repetitive and wanted to keep following the storyline.

Enjoyable Adveturing

I enjoyed they challenges of the main characters immensely.
I did however find the constant references to her (Ana's) feelings a little repetitive however as I was reading all the books in one go I suppose they were needed.
The books do wish that to fly on a phoenix would certainly be exciting...

This series was action packed and a coming of age of the main characters. Ana, Ginger and Aldred from a small town in the plains and Pepin and Brax from the mountains. The characters were amazing and the storyline was so good. You get to meet dragons and a feisty Phoenix.
Overall an excellent read that kept you wanting more.

Great story line

The book was a wonderful read. The characters were beautifully developed. The only problem I had was that it was sloppily proof read. As a matter of fact I don't think it was proof read at all. Happily, it didn't detract from the books. If you want to read something full of adventure, dragons and a phoenix this is a book or set of books for you.

Academy of flames

What a good book at first I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it but turned out to be a great book. The bond ana and Fyrensa have just touched my heart and it’s great to see such a good friendship form with Brax and Pepin considering Ana doesn’t trust anyone. Great books if you want to read a series but with books that are all quite short.

I really enjoyed the books and the storyline running through them. Sadly I did feel the characters lacked depth. Also, the ending felt a little bit of an anti-climax. Everything was neatly tied off, but it felt like it built and built, and then the final defeat felt oddly quick and easy. Does seem to have been left open for a follow-up though, which I would read.

The story was ok - but the author should have had someone proof read them before releasing them. They have to be the worst books I’ve ever read for using wrong names of characters, such as using Amelia instead of Abigail; wrong words in sentences, such as ‘lasted’ instead of last. This happened in every chapter.
It was extremely confusing and off putting when trying to follow the story. I won’t be reading any more by this author.

Amazing, exciting, thrilling!

Easy read. The story was stupendous. So many twists & turns. Just the type of fantasy that draws you in & keeps you wanting to read. Some misspelling through out. Some mixing of character names. Just needs better proof reading.
