My Thoughts /

Author, Fleur McDonald, is one of Australia's leading rural literature authors and is affectionately known as the voice of the outback. McDonald's inspiration for her stories is drawn from having lived and worked on farms for much of her life. One of McDonald's more favoured characters, Detective Dave Burrows has his own series, as well as a spin-off. He is featured here in Broad River Station, together with his newly graduated 'connie', Constable Mia Worth. Even though BRS is book #17 in the Dave Burrows series, you won't have any trouble picking it up and reading it as a standalone story.

When the story opens, newly graduated Constable Mia Worth's first posting is to Broad River. Mia requested this assignment to be close to her grandmother, who lives in the town's nursing home. Confident in her abilities to perform the job, Mia is excited to start her first shift. Things come unstuck quickly when the officer she is partnered with makes it obvious that she's not a welcome addition to the team. Mia was prepared to battle small town prejudice for a female police officer from some of the locals but was not expecting it from her male co-workers. Determined not to let them get to her, Mia sets about doing her job to the best of her ability.

When the station gets a report of a missing child, it's all hands-on-deck, except, it seems, for the newly minted constable. She's been tasked with staying behind and manning the phones. Realising she's viewed more as a liability than an asset, Mia is fuming. When the head of Barker Police Station, Detective Dave Burrows, arrives at Broad River to assist with the search, he brings Mia along with him, pointing out that where a missing child is concerned, you can't have too many people out searching.

The missing child was just one of a few story threads. Workplace politics, small town conflicts, rural crime and community and family relationships are all covered. McDonald writes her characters with empathy and compassion, and it was encouraging to see Mia pushing through the prejudices from her work colleagues, to shine on the other side. Also written with empathy and a quiet consideration is the topic of mental health. Mia's grandmother Clara has dementia, and although she has moments of lucidity, they are becoming fewer, and Mia is wanting to hold those moments to her like a tight hug.

You can see why McDonald's books are popular. With an ensemble of well written, likeable characters, authentic plot points and vivid descriptive text the story almost reads itself. And, as always, a good story teaches us something. Mother nature is fickle and can be spiteful at times. I have a healthy respect for our farmers and anyone who works the land. In Broad River Station, the author gives the reader enough details to understand some of the more difficult concepts about farming and rural life.

This was a very enjoyable read and I've come to the conclusion that I have yet to meet a Fleur McDonald book that I didn't like!

Constable Mia Worth had originally been from Barker, where Detective Dave Burrows was based, but she'd requested Broad River for her first assignment, as her grandmother Clara was in a nursing home in Broad River, in the early stages of dementia. Mia owed everything to Clara, who'd looked after and raised her after her parents died. She was devastated to watch dementia gradually steal her beloved grandma away.

Starting at the Broad River station, Mia was immediately in the midst of prejudice from her colleagues. Only Marty on the desk welcomed her. She could see she was unlikely to get ahead, but she was determined to fight her way forward. When Tahlia, a young child, went missing from a nearby farm, everyone, including SES, police from other areas as well as Dave from Barker, came to help. There was a lake on the property as well and that was everyone's fear. But what would Mia's future be in a small town where she wasn't wanted?

Broad River Station is Aussie author Fleur McDonald's 20th novel since she began writing her addictive stories. I have loved everything she's written and Broad River Station is no exception. Dave Burrows is a favourite character and I always look forward to more of his life in each installment. Now it's wonderful to have another constable in the story, one who I hope will have a continuing role. The author writes an excellent rural suspense, and Dave and Jack have both had roles in much of what has gone on. I'm very much looking forward to another from Ms McDonald, and recommend this one highly.

With thanks to Allen & Unwin for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Firstly huge congrats to Fleur McDonald on the release of her twentieth book, I do love Detective Dave Burrows and am hoping to keep on meeting up with him for a long time to come. This is another page turner one that I found very hard to put down.

Constable Mia Worth has just finished her training as a police officer for the South Australian Police force and when there is a position available in the small country town of Broad River, she applies her beloved grandmother Clara is in the nursing home suffering from dementia and it is the town closest to Barker where she spent some of her early childhood. Talking to Clara is often hard when she slips back into the past hinting at family secrets and talking about the shop in the main street of Barker that apparently she still owns, Mia is determined to get answers, while here.

Walking into the local police station finds her battling prejudice from most of the all-male staff, but Mia is determined to not let them get to her and do her best to be a good police officer she has enough worry over her grandmother. When a small child goes missing she is ordered to stay and answer the phones but when Detective Dave Burrows from Barker arrives to help with the search he takes Mia out to help and this starts a friendship that is sure to help Mia’s career.

Dave Burrows is the perfect mentor for the new constable Mia and I really do hope we are going to see a lot more of Mia I am sure she will become a firm favourite as is Dave and Jack, This story is so well written with suspense and mystery and with Dave’s cool calm attitude to solving cases, I was turning the pages, although I want all the answers I often don’t want the story to end. I do highly recommend this one, a must read. Thank you Fleur McDonald for another awesome story one for the keeper shelf.

My thanks to Allen & Unwin for my copy to read and review.

Author Fleur McDonald is known as the voice of the outback and this amazing storyteller published her pinnacle twentieth novel in November 2022. This is a fantastic achievement for such a highly embraced Australian author. McDonald’s landmark twentieth release is Broad River Station. A tale of small-town conflicts, homecoming, family secrets and career challenges, the envoy of rural fiction has it covered. It was great to be in the company of familiar detective Dave Burrows and his new constable sidekick Mia Worth in Broad River Station.

Broad River Station is another thrilling rural fiction tale that features popular Detective Dave Burrows and a new character, a graduate officer named Mia Worth. Assigned to Broad River, Mia is confident about her new position, but she quickly comes out of favour when she encounters sexism in the workplace. Mia is back in her old stomping ground, not only to take up a position at the local police station, but to watch over her grandmother who is suffering from dementia. During one of Mia’s regular visits to her grandmother, she is startled to receive a rather cryptic message from Clara. Clara reveals that she is in possession of a key that will unlock a hidden truth about their family. Mia has her doubts about her grandmother’s revelation, especially as Clara’s mind is faltering. Mia’s new posting soon involves a missing child, which rocks the small community base. Mia has a lot to prove and thanks seasoned Detective Dave Burrows, she might just get the big break she is after.

For her celebratory twentieth release, popular Aussie author Fleur McDonald brings in a new constable to work with her highly embraced detective, Dave Burrows. In this suspenseful, exciting and topical rural thriller, we are presented with plenty of knife edge tension, small town politics and family issues.

Broad River Station introduces a new and hopefully enduring character to Fleur McDonald’s absorbing rural suspense tales. It was great to be introduced to graduate constable Mia Worth, she was a real breath of fresh air. Highlighting the pressures and roadblocks faced by female police officers, Mia’s story was a fascinating one to follow. McDonald also brings in favourite Detective Dave Burrows, which adds an air of familiarity and ease to the story at hand. With a number of other periphery characters such as local townsfolk, fellow law enforcement officers and loved ones of the lead characters, Broad River Station was a busy read. With themes of workplace politics, small town pressure points, rural crime, missing persons cases, community relations, family health and the past, the voice of the outback has it all covered. The fast-moving plot and consuming chapters that roll one after the other ensured that Broad River Station was a page turning read. I love the touch of crime, mystery and suspense McDonald always incorporates into her rural tales. You can never go wrong with a Fleur McDonald read!

Cheers to Fleur McDonald on her twentieth book, Broad River Station is another ripper from the voice of the bush!

Broad River Station is another engrossing, rural set, police procedural from Fleur McDonald.

Wanting to be near her elderly grandmother, newly graduated police officer Mia Worth has moved to Broad River and is about to start at her first station as the only female with five male police officers.
Mia is treated as a liability, not only because she is a female but also a rookie.
I love how Fleur writes strong female characters in male dominated roles and we see them push ahead through prejudice and adversity.

A few different plot lines are introduced in Broad River Station, all relevant to rural communities; Mia's grandmother has dementia but in moments of lucidity she alludes to a mystery surrounding Mia's father, an organic farmer's crop is sabotaged and a young child goes missing.

I enjoyed getting to know Mia and how she fits into Broad River and nearby Burra. Det Dave Burrows is a secondary character but it was nice to have some familiar faces pop in with Dave and Kim, Jack and Zara. I love how Dave gives advice to both Jack and Mia and encourages them in their jobs, just like Bob did with Dave when he was younger.

Broad River Station is another fantastic read from Fleur McDonald. If you haven't yet gotten into Fleur's books, what are you waiting for!!!

Rural crime at its best. Fleur knows farming and the rural setting and it's evident in her stories.

Thank you Allen and Unwin for sending me a copy of this book for review. Fleur has a way of writing that makes you feel you are where the story is taking place. Rural setting tick !. I connected with the down to earth characters especially Mia. I felt this book was more of an emotional read for me . I felt all of Mia's emotions. Her sadness at her Grandmother's dementia, her frustration at the male coppers for not accepting her. I sympathised with her as she tried to find her family history. One of my favourite plots is missing people so huge tick for me. I loved the mystery and suspense and how I didnt find out any answers right to the very end. Loved it.

I absolutely enjoy every Fleur McDonald novel I read, I love a rural crime mystery! I flew through Broad River Station, it’s an easy page turner! Congratulations on this being her twentieth book, what an achievement.

In this book we meet up again with much-loved character Detective Dave Burrows, we’re also introduced to a new character Mia Worth who has just graduated as a police woman at the academy. I’m looking forward to seeing more of Mia in future books.

Mia is taking up a new position in the small rural town of Broad River where her grandmother Clara is a resident at the nursing home and has dementia. Clara may have some family secrets about to be discovered when she gives Mia a key.

Being the only female officer, Mia is not made to feel welcome at the Broad River police station where she receives snide remarks from some of her colleagues who believe women shouldn’t be in the police force.

It’s a busy time at Broad River when an organic farmer finds his crop has been poisoned, a child is missing and a gun is found in a an abandoned shop.

I adored the characters of Mia and Dave and the ensemble of other characters were always interesting. Fleur’s stories always feel authentic and I love learning about farming practices along the way. Love that the story was set in South Australia.

Four and a half stars
Mia, a young police constable has just taken up a job at the small South Australian country town of Broad River. This enables her to be close to her Grandmother Clara who is in a nursing home there. While she is certain of her ability to do the job it seems her male coworkers, are not convinced a woman can do a copper’s job. Mia determines to prove herself against their prejudices. But with one of the men in particular she manages to get on his wrong side right from the start.
When a four years old girl goes missing from a local property, things change but not in the way Mia expects. Detective Dave Burrows, among others, is called in from Barker Station and his attitude is vastly different to that of the police at Broad River Station. He supports Mia.
With an organic farmer whose crop has been poisoned as well as a missing child, there is plenty of action to keep things moving. Add to that the mystery surrounding Clara and a key that unlocks a tragic story from the past.
Great real characters especially with Mia and her Gran, and Dave and his wife Kim among others. I found this an involving story that quickly drew me in. It also deals with
the heartbreak of dementia with Clara’s condition.
I loved the relationship between Dave and his wife. Nice to see instead of detectives that are hard boiled, womanisers or alcoholics, as many in police fiction seem to be.
I found this an engrossing read and would recommend it to all fans of rural Aussie fiction or those who enjoy a good story well told.

Broad River Station by Fleur McDonald is the latest release in the interrelated series featuring Detective Dave Burrows who heads up Barker Police Station. McDonald tends to keep the focus on outback / farming related crimes and I like that about these books and her young Dave Burrows series. It very much sets them apart from other outback or rural (Oz) crime fiction. I know nothing about farms or rural life but thanks to her own knowledge and experience, McDonald manages to effortlessly engage readers in the unfolding plot – giving us enough detail that we understand the context (and receive a smidge of education at the same time) – but aren’t overwhelmed with superfluous complex information

Here the main crime under investigation is one involving a poisoned crop. More specifically an organic farm, laced with chemicals that could threaten a farmer’s livelihood (and organic certification) given the years it will take for the chemicals to leave the dirt.

Dave’s on the case and comes across Mia when she’s in Barker to visit the family store she thought her grandmother had sold decades earlier.

I really liked Mia and hope she hangs around for a while.

In fact, think McDonald usually writes one young Dave Burrows book and one from this interrelated series each year and though I love young Dave, I must confess I’m actually more excited about the continuation of Mia’s story.

My absolute favourite fictional detective is back y'all! (Insert a happy dance here). Each and every time I get the news that Fleur is writing a new Detective Dave novel, I'm amongst the first to pre-order! Why not- Dave is such an iconic character these days and I just simply adore him and his wife, Kim!

Broad River Station introduces us to a newbie- Mia Worth. This young passionate and fiesty police Constable has just graduated and has high hopes to make a difference to the world. With her Nan suffering from dementia and living in assisted care, Mia moves to the township of Broad River to be closer to her and takes on the vacant position at the local station.

But being the only female officer in a team of men proves to be difficult for Mia. She's constantly being treated unfairly by the majority of her team, most of all by her partner. Not only does she have to deal with the misogyny, Mia is also caught up in a family mystery that involves her Nan's old haberdashery shop.

Meanwhile, Detective Dave and his off sider Senior Constable Jack Higgins are in the middle of an agricultural investigation when Jack decides to apply for detective training. I'm unhappy to see Jack and Zara leave, but Jack undoubtedly deserves this chance. Hopefully we'll eventually see a series featuring Detective Higgins in action! (No pressure at all Fleur!)

I can already sense that Dave and Mia are going to be a formadible pair to be reckoned with! Their banter and teamwork is already top notch! You've got an excellent mentor there Mia, one that you'll learn a lot from.

Easily another five star read from our 'Voice of the Outback'. Congratulations on your 20th published novel, Fleur! Eagerly anticipating your 21st!

Thank you Allen & Unwin for sending us a copy to read and review.
Prominent author Fleur McDonald lands on new release racks today with her latest rural suspense hit Broad River Station.
A countrified mystery tale that features loveable larrikin Detective, Dave Burrows in a secondary role and introducing a new female lead who’s surely going to win many hearts.
Constable Mia Worth arrives in the town of Broad River for her assigned role at the local police station.
But on her first day she’s already receiving snide comments and sexism.
Mia is also dealing with her grandmother who is in the early stages of dementia, so when she gives Mia a key with not much explanation, a new hunt for the truth begins.
Amongst all this, a local child disappears and Detective Dave wants some help on his own case, newly appointed Mia’s knowledge comes in handy all round.
Another gripping and exciting outback instalment from the respected author who continues to pen an addictive read.
From solving crimes to prejudice in the workplace, Mia has her hands full and I was totally engrossed in her story and life on the pages.
The plot moves along quite nicely with moments of tension, a touch of suspense, a bunch of interesting characters and much drama all to indulge in.
It’s always good to reacquaint with Dave, when reading about the familiar character it’s like coming home.
A great reading experience.

This rural Aussie suspense novel sees Constable Mia posted out to the small town of Broad River. Sadly, many of her new workmates don't believe a woman can do the job as well as men. When a child goes missing, Mia is determined to crack the case, proving her colleagues wrong.

This was such an easy read, emotional in parts too with Mia's interactions with her dementia suffering grandmother. Incredibly likable characters, a small town Aussie setting and a mystery that kept me guessing right until the end - can't ask for much more in this one! My first book by this author and I'm excited to see she has a huge backlist which I'll be tackling soon.

I feel like this book was a little underwhelming. The story was fine and the character development was fine, but I kept waiting for something big to happen and it never did. I felt like the ending was almost an afterthought and didn't have the kind of impact I was waiting for. I was hoping to find a new series from a new author, but I don't think this is it. I do like the author's method of writing, though, so it was an easy read.

It started really indepth and enjoyable sadly it was rushed at the end, both story lines were sewin up in a few pages, it lost the impact. It was like the author thought, I've had enough just get it to the publisher. Not to her usual writings.

My first Fleur McDonald, Rural suspense is something I don't read a lot of, but I did very much enjoy this story. I started it yesterday afternoon and finished it this morning, an indication that it was engrossing and entertaining.

There were multiple mysteries in this story, the Police investigations and then Mia's search to find out more about her own family history. Her Nana's shop and the questions that brought up grabbed my imagination as well as the story of her Father. I loved Mia's character, her struggle to be accepted as a female cop in a small country town and the prejudices she faced. Her relationship with her Nana showed her soft, caring side, whereas she was a smart, capable police officer at other times. Nana was a very interesting character and her battle with dementia provided a sad but interesting element to the family story.

The pace of this story is steady. A bit like life in a country town. No need to run after the suspect, we know his Mother and where he lives. There were cleverly placed events that provided that spark of intrigue to keep my attention and want to keep reading. The resolutions to the mysteries all seem to come at once and this part of the book is packed full of solutions. I did feel that as in the pace, these solutions came as a soft glow of a lamp and not stark, bright flashbulb moments that jolt you into understanding. They slowly dawn on you, but I didn't guess at any of them.

One of my reading goals for this year is to keep reading more stories set in Australia. So I am off to a good start. As Fleur McDonald has 20 books in her catalogue, I will definitely be checking out more of them.

Broad River Station is another fantastic Australian Crime mystery by Fleur McDonald. Mia Worth, who had recently graduated from the Police academy, was excited to start her first posting near her Grandmother, who has dementia, at Broad River Station. However, on her first day, she ran into a problem with her colleague, and when a young girl went missing, Mia's Sergeant told her to stay behind. When Detective Dave Burrows visited and realised Mia's skills, she had to decide on her future. The readers of Broad River Station will continue to follow Mia Worth to discover what happens.

I had a break from reading Fleur McDonald's books, and I am so pleased that I have decided to return. I was engaged with Broad River Station from the first page, which continued to the end. I love Fleur McDonald's portrayal of her characters and the way they interact with each other.
Broad River Station is well-written and researched. I like Fleur McDonald's description of its sittings, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

Broad River Station's readers will delve into female law enforcement officers' challenges in rural Australia, offering a unique perspective. Additionally, the narrative explores the world of organic farming, providing an intriguing subplot that adds depth to the story.

I recommend this book.

Thank you to Beauty and Lace Club and Allen & Unwin for my copy.

Fans of Fleur McDonald’s books and more importantly, fans of Detective Dave Burrows will be happy with this book.
Dave features in this book quite a bit, but he’s not the main character this time. A new Constable is introduced and stationed at Broad River. What makes this story interesting is the new Constable is female and she’s posted in a station full of mostly misogynistic male officers. I liked the new character Mia Worth and feel for her in her first posting. Also she’s the first female officer to be stationed in Broad River. Mia is five foot nothing and has both a tough and fragile side to her. She chose this area because her grandmother is in an aged care facility in the same country town. Clara has dementia and the author’s writing and descriptions of dementia are accurate and heartfelt.
Constable Jack Higgins also features in this book, as does his girlfriend Zara and also Dave’s wife Kim.
The story has two mysteries, one involving an organic farmer’s crop being sprayed with a pesticide which kills the crop and Mia has a family mystery of her own to try and solve.
I found the story interesting and the investigative skills used to find out what pesticide was used and who sprayed the crop really interesting. Mia’s family mystery was also interesting and the whole story flowed well. All the main characters were likeable and there’s plenty of country community spirit. I’m hoping to read more about Mia in future books .
Highly recommend!

Much better than I expected.
A solid, easy read.
I've read some of the Dave Burrows stories, but not consecutively.
Too much countryside for me 😂 as is normal when I read Australian books.
A little predictable.
Mia a new policewoman at her first posting. Of course, she wasn't accepted easily, with the small town mentality, and the male dominated police station. Of course.
She needs a strong mentor. And in walks Dave Burrows, Detective. Of course.
I'm sure many new policemen/women are expected to take a country posting, a lot like teachers and doctors, first placement. But it helps Mia decide because her Nana is suffering dementia and is in a care home. Mia wants to be near her.
Interlaced into the story of why somebody has poisoned a farmer's land and ruined his organic certification, is the mystery of Mia's father who she's never known. What happened, why all the secrets and can she find out while her Nana still has the mental ability to engage with her.
Good elements. Definitely readable.

A young constable faces prejudice in a small country town, but the search for a missing child changes everything. A breathtaking novel of rural suspense from the bestselling Voice of the Outback.

Mia, a newly graduated constable, on her first post is assigned to Broad River, a small country town. And as certain as she is about her ability to do the job, on day one she's already in conflict with colleagues who believe that women shouldn't be coppers.

It takes the shine off coming home, where her grandmother, Clara, is in the early stages of dementia. Clara is in a nursing home, living between her present and the mist-covered past of her life as dementia slowly steals her memories. Mia is accustomed to their conversations often not quite making sense but when Clara hints of veiled family secrets, Mia isn't sure what she should believe.

In the midst of all this, a local child goes missing and Mia is confined to barracks. When Detective Dave Burrows realises she has skills that could be put to use, Mia's career takes a new turn, and she must decide down which road to walk.

Mia Worth has just graduated from the Police Force and has been assigned a position in Broad River Station. She is happy with the move as her grandmother, Clara, is in an aged care facility near by with early stages of dementia. Clara gives Mia a key and tells her that it belongs to her old haberdashery shop in nearby Barker, hinting of a dark family past. This leaves Mia not knowing what to believe.

On day one she is greeted with her work colleagues giving her a hard time because they don't believe women should be coppers. She is assigned to her partner Richie who is the worst of them all. Suddenly the station receives word of a child missing from a local property and the station head out to search, leaving Mia to man the phones. She is instructed to call nearby stations for assistance and when Detective Dave Burrows arrives he insists on Mia going with him. Could this be a change in the constable's early career.

When Mia Worth begins her first job in the town of Broad River, the welcome she receives is less than what she had expected. Although Mia is convinced she is more than capable of doing her job, she is undermined at every step.
Mia's grandmother Clara has dementia and lives in care at Broad River so when a position became available at the local police station, Mia gladly applied.
Mia's grandmother gives her a mystery key and tells her it belongs to her shop in the town of Barker. When she visits the shop she discovers a gun, more mystery and no answers. With all that is happening in Mia's life, a child goes missing and everything changes for Mia.
This is book # 4 in my current catch-up of Fleur's books. A few more to go so on now to Rising Dust (realising at the end of Broad River Station that this one should have come before it if I was to strictly follow publication dates). No matter Broad River is present day Dave, Rising Dust is young Dave.

I always enjoy reading Fleurs books, they are all amazing. Although this one was a Dave Burrows novel, I loved that Mia was really the lead character. Being a young female constable being stationed out in the country where all the other coppers were male made it hard for her, but she handled it well and absolutely held her own. The back story of Mia's childhood in Barker played well into the storyline and showed a different side to her character.
If you haven't read any of Fleur McDonalds novels, then get on it, they're great reads.

I always enjoy this author’s books. Detective Dave Burrows isn’t the main character in this book, but he does play a part. Mia spent part of her early life in Barker. She has just graduated as a police officer and is posted to Broad River, near Barker. Her Nan is in a nursing home in Broad River. Things don’t go well at Broad River police station and there is a lot of bad feeling. When Mia finds a lost child, her partner Richie, is quite agro. Circumstances see Mia sent to Barker where she finds out the mysteries of her childhood.

Loved this book. Interesting characters and a credible rural story. Sargent Dave Burrows is back. Mia is a new constable who starts on the wrong foot by showing some male cops up when she finds a child. She has come back to her roots to be close to her dementing grandma, who actually brought her up. There is a rural crime and alsoMia finds out answers about her family. This has been an ongoing concern to her.
Fleur never disappoints.
