This novel was first published back in 1917 in Adventure Magazine. At the time, mysteries and thrillers adhered to the rather quaint Victorian formulas. This is a precursor to the later books by Carroll John Daly described as hard-boiled, which in themselves were the beginning of the noir movement. Dangerous Men is quite good and an early modern thriller.

The lead character, Don Everhard, decides to help Melville Summers from a jam he’d gotten himself into. Summers’ wife has just come into a fortune of millions of dollars through the death of her uncle. Some gangsters want her dead so that Summers becomes the inheritor. They then tell him that he will have to divide the estate with them, as they have a great deal of information of Summers’ past felonious actions.

Summers finds that he truly loves his wife and escapes the thugs in a yacht. In this way he has been able to keep away from the gang by anchoring at diverse ports. But they have caught up with him….
