Rate this book
It began as a spectacle like no other.
They called it the Night of the Northern Lights - a phenomenal light show generated by the power of the sun. It ended in a powerless world thrust into chaos.

International bestselling author, Bobby Akart, one of America's favorite storytellers, delivers up-all-night thrillers to over a million readers in 245 countries and territories worldwide.

"Bobby Akart is a genius at creating disaster scenarios."

This new survival thriller series thrusts North America into darkness beginning with the most dynamic city on Earth, New York. The city was filled with excitement as the news media hyped this as a "once in a hundred years" event, promising the famous New York skyline would be painted in hues of blue and green. What they didn't count on was the Perfect Storm creating a solar event so strong that it collapsed the power grid throughout North America.

The city of New York descended into mayhem with remarkable speed. The thin veneer of civilization was laid bare as man fought one another for survival in the city that never sleeps.

It was the day the sun brought darkness.

I didn't know that post-apocalyptic books could be boring, but here we are.

Post-apocalyptic books should be exciting, adventurous, scary yet thrilling. All this book made me wanna do is sleep. It did have alot of potential with using a solar storm as disaster, and the writing wasn't half bad either. However, nothing exciting happened in this book.

- The pacing of this book was completely off. The lead up to the aurora dragged, when the aurora actually happened it was over in the blink of an eye, and then time slowed again to a snail's pace.
- The book followed too many characters to really get into depth with any of them, therefore none of them was unique and they all pretty much felt like the same character.
- The aftermath of the disaster was also poorly written. It wasn't realistic at all, the attacks they endured didn't blend in the story, we suddenly stopped following certain characters, and nothing really exciting happened.
- And then the ending of this book- I've never, ever experienced such an abrupt ending. I was expecting more chapters, but this cut off so abrupt, not with a cliffhanger or any type of closure, it's like the author just suddenly stopped writing? Really weird.

The only thing that was positive about this book was that the author had done his research on the subject, and that the writing was decent enough. Other than that, I can only describe this book as flat, dull and boring. I won't be reading anything from this author anytime soon unfortunately.

A Stunningly Sunny Day

Ripped from the headlines, Perfect Storm 1: Post Apocalyptic Survival Thriller is incredibly timely given the disruption in our solar cycle due to climate change.

Leave it to Bobby Akart to write the leave your heart on the floor, your hands painful from grasping the book in anticipation and screech to the end of the book only to find it's being continued kind of thriller.

If you want to know more about the plot, just Google space weather and you'll get an eyeful, enough to compel you to read this book and the rest of the series.

This author does a good job setting the stage so we get to know the main characters and to build to the start of disaster. He also provides some background for prior solar storms. I am surprised that the Texas grid is still extolled since we know it can’t even handle serious cold weather. I already know this author can’t help but display his right-leaning tendencies, but the excited posing in front of Trump tower was a bit much. So was the reminiscing about how America came together after 9/11 (some truth there), but we allowed our patriotism to dwindle and ended up with an NFL player kneeling in protest. The author missed the point of that, I guess. I also don’t know that any credible scientist addressing colleagues in a conference would talk at such length about mythological figures from the Bible. That just would not happen. None of these “conservative” items were integral to the story; they were tossed out to establish affinity for those views. It spoiled what I considered to be a very good start to a series. The editing was generally good, though at some point in 30 Rock, Cat suddenly and briefly became Emma. Because of the tedious pellets of right propaganda, I’m not sure I will continue.

Characters flat. Need more details. Clothes. Food. Emotions. Books read. Sex? Any woman worry about sanitary supplies and birth control?

Though Perfect Storm is a work of fiction, drawn from the incredible imagination of this remarkable author, have no doubt that it isn’t a question of if it will happen but when will it happen. Bobby Akart takes on the sun and survival of humanity in his 60th book and it is one hell of an adventure! After the Earth is hit by a solar storm the story takes off and we are on our way… From New York City to rural Pennsylvania, the main characters are thrust into a world of darkness and danger. This first book in the newest series is absolutely perfect! It had me in its grip from the first chapter until that last page was turned as I hurriedly turned the page. The anticipation of the next book is growing, and I can’t wait to see what will happen next. Now I will go back to binging on Blue Bloods while I wait.

The premise had potential but the writing just wasnt for me and I really didnt connect with any of the characters. There was a lack of urgency to the story which given it's a disaster story just made it hard for me to be engrossed. Also it def reads like the author had a certain idea about how society would behave and every single character thought so as well (which I kinda agree that society would def behave that way but there was so little variety in characters).

Not for me, but maybe it will be for you.

I tried

I’m a big Akart fan, so when I saw this series I had to read it. Well, I tried to anyway.
Akart’s style of writing was present, but the excitement I felt from his previous book series wasn’t there. There were so many slow spots I found myself putting the book down to do something else. I ended up closing the book about seventy-five percent complete because it was getting painfully slow paced, predictable and over descriptive in unnecessary spots.
This book may make some happy, but if you want fast paced action and are a fast reader, this book may annoy you too.

It's a decent enough read for me to continue reading the next one. But Akart gets too wordy explaining too many things. Get to the point already.

Only fools…would head into the abyss…

Another PHENOMENAL read by the master wordsmith, hardcore researcher, scientist-at-heart of all disciplines - author Bobby Akart!
I believe the Perfect Storm series is my favorite of all his work.
Wait. They all, each of his series, have been my favorite as I’ve read them! lol
It really is impossible to choose. Each is unique regarding the cause of the apocalyptic event. Each is incredibly well-written. It would be akin to saying you have a favorite child as a mother/parent.
Not possible.
So, here again, in Perfect Storm - we find the perfect collection of ingredients for an, “up all night read.” (Which I did just last night to complete this book in one fell swish.)
Akart immediately sets the stage in the first couple of chapters with the hook. Which is so intriguing you cannot help but be drawn right into the tale & character’s lives.
The world building is solid, rich, & brilliant.
The character development is emotionally engaging, chock full of backstory, & offers some tension as well.
The above “basics” are not at all surprising as Akart is a pro. So utterly skilled in his craft. Absolutely one of the Top 5 modern apocalyptic writers we enjoy today. Likely ranks even in the Top 3.
The CME subject for this story has been covered, without question, about a zillion times in about a trillion books in the dystopian genre. It’s been around the apocalyptic block more than Akart himself!
What sets Perfect Storm head & shoulders (ok, a whole entire torso as well…) apart from 98% of all the other tired old plots out there is this author’s trademark PASSION.
What most of us who love his books, love him for the most.
The very real science built into the story.
The months (years…) of research Akart has devoted to the subject of the Sun, CME’s, preparation/survival specifically related to CME’s, space in general, who & what the professional organizations are here on Earth which most closely align with this subject on macro & micro levels, as well as the psychology of it all (people’s tendencies/reactions/actions related to unforeseen “positive” & “negative” occurrences).
In addition to Akart’s solo type research, the cross-section of varied specialists he works with is extremely impressive. Specialists (scientists, doctors/PhD’s, technicians, etc, etc) who donate their considerable knowledge & time to this author’s efforts.
The “actual facts” woven so creatively throughout this story, in conjunction with the uptempo pacing, offers the reader a true sense of authenticity.
And it’s not just, “the science stuff” this author has researched & included for our pleasure.
Book 1 also contains a great tour through some of the best spots found in NYC. Especially museums. The artwork, by present & painters of the past, is described in detail. (There are actually photographs of more than a few canvases in this book for reference!)
And by way of museum docent, the history of pertinent painters & their work is offered.
It’s awesome! (And not one bit dry, textbook-y, history class-like, nor boring! ;)
The entire storyline of Book 1 is an enthralling page turner. In fact, when I reached the last page I was kind of shocked back to reality, I had been so engrossed!
And I have to thank Mr. Akart as well. Due to all of his research, on many different world-ending subjects for every one of his wonderfully thrilling & terrifying series & books, I’m sure he’s spent some anxious personal times.
Daydreaming. Nights where he can’t sleep, or even having a nightmare or two. Sudden thoughts or worries for loved ones which have stopped him cold.
No matter how prepared he is, or how many steps anyone takes to ensure a measure of safety for themselves & their loved ones should an emergency occur - living & breathing the facts/scientific reality of worldwide, “extinction level events,” day in & out must creep up on one occasionally.
Thus, I THANK YOU, Mr. Akart. For - taking a big one for The Team! So that all of us get the joy (& chills, laughter, & learning opportunities) that come from experiencing your work.
It truly is in a class by itself.
Ok! All that said….
On to Book 2 in the Perfect Storm series. I can’t wait to find out what happens next, from where Book 1 left off.
And what new adventure(S!) await our discovery!…
Ps- Oh … & thank you.
There’s odd (super annoying) trend recently, in the apocalyptic genre. Every series I’ve read that’s been published in the past year or so, ALWAYS has a character- or MANY in same book- whose entire personality is comprised of, “it’s all my fault; everryyything that happens anywhere, any time, to anything or any one- it’s all MY fault.” And this line or version of it, they lament internally & externally from cover to cover, from beginning of series till the bitter end.
It’s horrible, “poor me,” trend. (And boring.)
I don’t know where it began, but fingers crossed authors let it die off (ASAP!!) much sooner than later.
So- TY! Not that I thought AKART would EVER write to satisfy trend… ;)

Written for the EMP Novice

Giving this book 3-stars is being generous.

The Earth is hit by two Coronal Mass Ejections causing the electrical grid in the northern US to go down. The book follows a family in which Grampa Sam and his 13-year-old granddaughter Kat are visiting New York City when the "space weather" strikes. Meanwhile, back on the ranch, Kat's family is locking down the farm in preparation for the fallout of society's collapse. John and one of his sons head to New York to try and find Kat and Grampa.

If you don't know what EMP or CME is, then this book will certainly explain it to you - in nauseating detail. Almost a third of the book focuses on introducing all the characters. No wonder the story is at least a four-book series. Not surprisingly, the book ends on a cliffhanger.

This is the reason I tend to avoid this particular post-apocalyptic type of story. Most authors feel compelled to explain everything. By now, we all know that the sun has CME. We also know that as a result of a bad enough CME, power grids, modern vehicles, cell phones, and other electronic devices will not work. People will get desperate and all social norms will collapse. And with many of these books, there is usually someone who is already prepared for this stuff or has sufficient foresight or resources to not only survive but also to teach the hapless reader the merits of being prepared. Ho-hum. Got the T-shirt. Nothing really original here.

There isn't too much character development. I can't say I connected with any of the characters. But that is probably my fault for choosing a book that is really written for the EMP/CME/We-lost-all-the-power novices. Sorry, Bobby, I won't be going to the next book.

The theme of this book is the idea that a massive solar storm can cause massive trouble on the Earth as it overloads power grids, resulting in explosions, fires and a world where electrical things no longer work.

The book opens with Praise for Bobby Akart and Perfect Storm. I really don't care for this type of approach and fortunately I don't see it very often. If you want to have something like this then put it at the end of book.

Then there's a list of other works by him. Again, this is something that normally goes at the end of the book.

Then there's an Author's Note and this part is good, covering actual historical events of a similar nature to the fictional one in the book.

The story focuses on two places: New York City and a farmhouse family a fair distance away. They interact when a man and a young girl visit New York City and are there when the event happens. The people at the farmhouse are worried, of course, and a couple of them set out to rescue the man and the young girl.

In both places the effects of what happened can be seen at least as far as the darkest side of human behavior. In New York City itself, the results of the overload are very bad.

The story focuses on what happened to the people involved and there are many examples of violence, theft and murder.

Unfortunately, it's probably very close to what would happen in the real world. It's a pretty depressing book, graphic and realistic.

A perfect storm indeed!

When two eruptions of the stuff of stars flew from the surface of the sun, they rapidly barreled their way to Earth. Unseen since there Carrington Event in the mid 1800s, the power of this perfect storm blazed through Earth's magnetic shield and blew apart every transformer in North America and Western Europe. Any item powered by electronic circuitry was instantly disabled. Even backup generators were powerless to provide the electricity no longer available. Very few were prepared for this catastrophe and had little food on hand or stored. No one is prepared for the quick loss of all humanity along with the power.
As usual, the author has done his homework on the science involved, the locations and backgrounds thoroughly researched, the characters lovingly formed like clay in a master's hands. The storyline revolves around one families attempts to reunite, but the real story is the loss of humanity and the basic depravity of unrestrained mankind. This series is a warning to prepare for the unexpected and to be aware that most people cannot be trusted when your life is on the line. That the story is so compelling is the artistry of a master storyteller. This is a great read!

I have ready multiple books by Bobby Akart as well as hundreds of books in this genre, this book did not disappoint. Bobby does a great job at mixing current events and possible catastrophic events. It is clear he has done his research. The fact that his scenarios could possibly occur definitely adds a level of excitement and emotion to the read. I enjoy the way he tells his stories by introducing us to multiple character groups that are intertwined and typically all connect at some point. If you are a fan of dystopian literature or just looking for a well researched fictional book with great character development, I highly recommend this as well as others. His books have kept me reading well into the night on multiple occasions, just like tonight, haha.

Horrible

This is the first and last book I have read from this author. I couldn’t finish it. There were long slogs through extraneous information, given in such a way I found myself rolling my eyes through several passages. I felt the author was intent on letting the reader know how smart he is by having his characters tell us.

When the “professor “ gives a lecture on one of the greatest Old Testament prophets - Moses, and then proceeds with the story of Noah, and how he built the ark in seven days, I had to stop reading.

I found this story , in the parts I read, pretentious, uninteresting and meandering.

Excellent read

Enjoyed this book immensely, the character development ,the description of how the country began to look, all excellently done. I enjoyed how Akart made the story familiar and used current topics related to today. I am still not certain as to the beginning regarding the police and the scientist as they weren't mentioned through the rest of the book. I love apocalyptic books ,however so many are written over technical and with cheesy dialogue. This one was amazing!

Looks like this is going to be good!

As with all of Bobby Akart's work, book one lays the groundwork. This book doesn't have the characters as super human, no super preppers and no special skill set people. They are everyday quasi-overachievers. I like that. Looking forward to book two.

Spoiler alert:
I can't imagine driving into NYC... a population of just under 10 million people... to find two people.

"Perfect Storm 1"
by Bobby Akart
This is the first novel in a 5-book series. Akart has done careful research in space weather which makes the book all-the-more credible. Here we see the impact of a massive coronal mass ejection (CME) on the lives of ordinary people going about their daily business.
Excellent book! I have already preordered Book 2 in this series which will be available on 30 June 2022.

Akart has done it again with this page turning, character driven tale of what could possibly be ripped from the headlines, mind you if this horrific story of the Earth being struck by 2 solar flares happens there will no longer be headlines to read. 350 miles round trip separate two members from the rest of their family when this chilling event happens. Can they reunite or even survive, that is the big question? Looking forward to the next books in this series.

Mr Akart never disappoints

Well written saga with a storyline that follows family members separated by an apocalyptic event. Refreshing as it's not preppers with military grade weapons described in minute detail. It's only book 1, that or political drama could still occur. I prefer to read a series all at once, but this is too good to wait. I will have to enjoy all the previous books again to refresh my memory each time a new one comes out!

Grandpa Sam and his granddaughter Cat are on holiday in New York when a solar storm takes out all power and communications leaving them trapped at the top of the 30rock. Also trapped are Asher and his wife Lauren, they help each other to escape. Meanwhile back on the cubbison family farm, dad and son head to NY to find Sam and cat while mum and son stay home. Well paced, both story lines interesting.

Great Read

I really liked this book, although I found it a bit slow at first, I then realized it was providing a great set for the story, introducing the story line and characters, especially exposing the solar storm. By the end, I'm definitely looking for the next boo!, NOW! Hope you do as well....until we meet again at the end of book 2, "stay safe, out of the sun and above all else, PREPARED!"

Well Researched and Written

This is book 1 of a multi part series. Bobby Akart is a really good writer. Like Steven Konkoly, he knows the facts of this kind of situation. I agree that Society will go to Hell, but mostly not. I think that in this catastrophic event there will be pockets of hysteria and self-aggrandizing violence. I just think it will take more than the first 24 hours. I hope so anyway. This EMP was caused. Y solar maximumeading to a Carrington-like event.

Read this tale of survival before.

I am reminded that instinct is towards fear.courage is having fear, but taking action to move toward the danger. I am certain that people react differently in survival situations. Faced with incessant attempts to merely survive, I am uncertain whether survival is optimal. This book chooses to make “tough “ characters, who choose survival. This makes for a decent read, but hardly a preferable lifestyle.

love this but….

Akart is a master of storytelling! This book grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. But, I’m sad to say that this is a short story not a book. I’ll wait until the whole series is out and then read them. Love the books but each release is shorter then the one before.

Terrific Book!

This book grabbed me from the start. The characters are very believable and the plot is too. I stayed up late to finish because I just HAD to find out what happened next. Now I have to wait for the next book to come out. I highly recommend Perfect Storm. While you're waiting for the next book to come out, read some of Bobby Akart's other books. They're all great!

My favorite eotwawki author

I have been a fan of Akart since I read the Yellowstone series. This looks to be another terrific read.
His stories have great characters, interesting side notes, and tell the stories in a way that makes me
Read to the end, and wait impatiently for the next volume.

When the Day Comes, and It Will Come, This is How it Will Be

As usual when you read a Bobby Akart book you don’t want to put it down. Character development works quickly in this novel, a complicated family that loves each other emerges. The task to be safe as a family leads the plot. I was terribly disappointed when I reached the end of the book.

Pros and cons

The pros to this book are easy to explain, great story line, fast paced, good solid research that is explained well but not over explained, characters that you will love. The cons waiting 3 months for the next installment. One of these days I will win my own battle and read the books after they all come out. Til! Then I will whittle away the days.
