This was not to bad of a book. The problem was that the description on the cover ( I have a different version than the one pictured ) was very misleading. It states, "Not since Deliverance has there been such a nightmare plunge into a living hell...SEX....HORROR...Plenty of plot." The only sex, really, was an unwanted advancement by a female student to her male professor. There was some horror though. I didn't plunge into it. More like got knee deep. There was a plot, this is true. It was an interesting read that kept you going.
The plot centers round a biology professor who takes some of his students to the Okefenokee Swamp. While there, one of his students finds a couple of coins and a female student who's father by the way, has something against the Prof., makes some sexual advances, which he repulses. Later the coins are thought to be worth millions if the whole cache is found and the unwanted love tells everyone that the Prof. sexually assaulted her. This makes the teacher run back to the swamp.
The horror comes from three homicidal creole homosexuals. They were hired by the female students father which ends bad for him. They take to the swamp after his daughter. The professor is joined by the guy who found the coins, another teacher and the girl who had a lust for more than just knowledge. This is where the Deliverance part comes into play. Nothing out of the norm sad to say. Still worth a read if you can find it.
This was hard going, not really a horror book more suspense. The best chapter was when he went to the coin specialist to look at some coins he found. Some weird homosexual stuff in this book that did not really gel into the story. I can only give this one star but others may enjoy this book more than I did
I was intrigued at first because the main character was a biology professor and in the first few chapters takes his class on a 10-day trip through the Florida swamp (which is a class I actually took 2 years ago).
There was only one shocking scene, the rest was mundane for a novel like this. Definitely not the "exciting horror" that was promised on the cover.
Also, I know this book was written several decades ago, but it was REALLY homophobic and racist. The bad guys are not only all gay, but most of them were not-white. I felt awfully uncomfortable reading their bits...
I really enjoyed this odd little novel. An interesting mix of diverse characters, Eco morals, Murder and... coin collecting... all blend well together. I will say, however, the author portrays homosexuals (a whole gang of them, all villains) in this book as predatory sex fiends. Very offensive and un-PC by today's standards.
