Yashiro-kun's Guide to Going Solo

Rate this book
Shigeaki Yashiro is proud to be a loner, doing his own thing without getting involved with others. From studying alone in a karaoke room to relaxing by himself in open-air hot springs, Yashiro is an expert in finding the perks of doing things solo. But his solitary existence begins to unravel when Kanon Hanamizawa, one of the popular girls at school, asks him to teach her his ways. She knows just how exhausting keeping up with all the latest trends can be, especially since she’s afraid to talk about her own uncool hobbies. Yashiro becomes Hanamizawa’s reluctant teacher, but soon finds himself tangled in the antics of his apprentice’s popular friends.

A lone wolf could learn some new tricks from social butterflies!

This was really fine on many levels. A group of HS kids that interact and support each other. Discussions about life and getting along.
A really, really good and respectful love relationship between Nue and Hachijo (their nicknames for each other).
The author’s mid-book notes to the readers.
Dojyomaru writes,
“…there were two questions I had that inspired me to write this.
1: What would a school romcom look like in a world where cool kids and loners were no longer pitted against each other?
2: Could I write a story without showing the female lead?”

I think the author’s mid-book was successful on both counts. I am looking forward to the follow on set of stories: Yashiro-kun's Guide to Going Solo: After Story!

(Disclaimer: Read on J-Novel Club, doubt much will change between now and its publishing, but you never know.)

The book consists of two halves. The first part is about a loner who is helping the popular kids with solo activities and teaching them some people are loner by choice without feeling bad about it. The second part is a wholesome romance told from the loner's girlfriend's perspective, somebody whom also prefers to be alone most of the time.

The story is funny at times with likeable characters, and a nice change of pace from all those books where the popular kid tries to "save" the loner. The romance wholesome, still wish fulfilment to an extent, but at least it avoids the toxic trope of one of the partners wanting to change the other. The story is a rather optimistic about human behaviour, but that is fine for a story like this. The author also expresses some odd opinions based on a skewed view of the west (apparently based on interaction with only a small group of Western fans), but none of those are actually seen in the story and not of the worrying kind. So I am not going to let those influence my enjoyment of the book and enjoy it I did.

A good read, if rather optimistic about people.

A wholesome, fun beginning: I've liked a lot the way is structured not showing Nue until the very end, although, sometimes it felt more like author's intended message leaking in a cheap way and not the characters themselves expresing their thoughts.
Despite everything, i'm looking forward to see what comes in the next volume.
