Heroine was self obsessed

This is rare for me. I am a woman. I can relate to many experiences and emotions of heroines. I am much more likely to understand or justify their behaviors. In this case, I couldn't. Jemima was selfish and rude. She chose to not love her family. She chose to be lonely. She blamed her stepmother for speaking without thinking, yet she herself never did. She just spit out whatever sarcastic or hateful comment came in her head. I am honestly surpised Hugh would be attracted to her or pursue an acquaintance. Fortunately, she did grow a bit in character over the month. The ending was abrupt. An okay read but not one I would recommend for the holidays.

Holiday historical romance.

Set in London during time of war and featuring two unlikely characters as a love match. Nevertheless they indeed succumb.

Twelve Drummers Drumming, the first novella of The Twelve Days of Christmas series begins to paint the picture of what's to come as the Fitzroy cousins find love during the holiday season. The story itself was excellent and had so much potential yet the execution didn't work for me as well as I had hoped.

Jemima Fitzroy is a woman with a strong mind and a passion for ending the war in France. When she meets Captain Hugh Rotherham, an injured soldier, he manages to challenge everything she believes in. What begins as love at first sight evolves into a forbidden enemies to lovers story since he represents the war she's against. Discovering the shared pain of loneliness in their hearts, the attraction between them is magnetic.

I had a difficult time connecting with Jemima as her anger and initial unwillingness to have an open mind became frustrating. She wanted her family to pay attention to her and yet she didn't seem to want to listen to them in return. I didn't like how rude and disrespectful she was to Hugh during their unfortunate encounters while out in London even as he tried so hard to spend time with her. I also would have liked to see more character development with Hugh and I know there were so many more layers of him to explore. Furthermore, I was unsettled by all of the exclamation points throughout the thoughts and speech in this book and have never seen this used in Regency romance.

There were other aspects of the story I enjoyed, however. I loved how Hugh saw right into Jemima's soul, knowing her better than she knew herself. I thought his disability was sensitively presented and my heart broke as he let his value and worth become defined by it. I loved how Jemima and Hugh shared their passions and hopes for the future with each other and how Hugh was so gentle through Jemima's first intimate experiences.

The book ended abruptly and I would have liked to see what happens when Hugh returns to war and how that impacts their relationship, if at all. I just think there's so much more to their story and I hope that will be addressed later in the series.

“And no matter what happens, wherever the drums of war may call me, your voice will always call over them louder, calling me home.”

Twelve drummers drumming is the first book in the holiday novella series The twelve days of christmas by Emily E.K Murdoch.

For a novella length book, this fared really well in terms of romance and character building. I liked how the entire family was introduced and we got glimpses at the nature of all sisters.

Hugh and Jemima had really contrasting personalities but they mashed together so well that I enjoyed their story to a great extent.

I always love a good holiday themed historical romance. This is the first book in the series.

I really liked Jemima's character in this book. She seems to be the odd one out in her family of many daughters and makes known her beliefs about the war. She of course falls for a soldier of all people.

Captain Hugh Rotherham definitely has a lot of emotional baggage from what he has seen at war and lack of confidence from his injury.

It is nice to see Jemima and Hugh form a somewhat secret friendship/romance. This book gets a bit more steamy toward the end too.

I enjoyed this romance and references to 12 drummers, but would have loved some more holiday tie-ins. Nonetheless, this was a good start to the series and I am excited to read the next book!

Thank you to Dragonblade and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this ARC for my honest review.

Although I thought the story was going in a good direction…it just stopped! What happens next?? When I read a story I like to have a proper ending and this did not have one. I won’t be reading the next 11.

Well Jemina certainly wasn’t happy during the holiday season, was she? The story really did a great job at capturing my attention with all the happiness at the family gathering. The story flow smoothly. The entertainment was calm and enjoyable to read. I would have liked Jemmina’s age to be a little older than twenty one. Perhaps twenty four or older. The writer could give the readers a guesstimate of her age or they could give a small hint of an age range. Jemmina had a lot of growing up to do. The book is a great short story to read over the Christmas Holiday.

(Jemima)

I do not believe I have ever come across a more unlikeable mfc in a book. Jemima was immature, self-absorbed, and argumentative. What Hugh called her bluntness was plain rudeness. And the passionate scene immediately following the death of Stuart’s relative was in such poor taste that I found it nauseating. Such a disappointment and waste of my time.

There are three Fitzroy brothers who between them have twelve daughters. It’s 1813 & love starts to find the cousins.
Jemima Fitzroy is tired of being ignored by her loud, rambunctious family, especially as she attempts to campaign for returning soldiers in a world that doesn't appreciate them. When she sees soldiers in a parade she literally bumps into Captain Hugh Rotherham.
The start of a new series, which is releasing weekly in the run up to Christmas. I really liked Jemima even though she was outspoken & had a temper & I really liked Hugh who'd been injured. The chemistry between them just grew & grew. A short but charming read, which introduced the Fitzroys, who were a mixed bunch & I look forward to the rest of the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

2021 52 Book Challenge - Christmas Mini Challenge - 12) Twelve Drummers Drumming

I really enjoyed this short novel about Jemima Fitzroy. For such a short novel, between 100 - 150 pages long, I think Jemima was well characterized, and so was the secondary main character, Hugh Rotherham. Even though the author managed to show her character, she wasn't a particularly likable main character. It did make me want to read the rest of the series though.

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

Jemima Fitzroy may be the eldest of the London daughters, but she's always felt apart from her sisters. Her mother's only child, her relationship with her stepmother and stepsisters is fraught, and her pacifist tendencies are quite different to her family. After the lack of attention or respect gets too much, Jemima blows, and runs out of the home. Running quite literally into the arms of injured soldier Captain Hugh Rotherham, Jemima starts to reconsider all her past views on the war, and she can't keep her mind off the handsome captain. Hugh is drawn to Jemima, and though the conflicting views on the war are difficult, he's willing to put himself out there to be with her, and even dance in public, no matter his injury. I liked that both characters grew as the book progressed, and they fell hard and fast for one another. A great start to the series, setting the scene for the following books!

A cute historical novella where a woman who has no prospects meets a man who is so contrary to, in her mind, her just and righteous beliefs.

Hugh is an emotionally broken man back from war. His pride and leg have been injured and he can’t quite comprehend what is happening with Jemima.

Fun quick read, although highly scandalous for this era 1800's.

Hugh and Jemima

Jemima always felt over looked as the stepdaughter. Her father and his new wife and her daughters made her feel like she didn't belong and after more sisters being born it got even worse. Hugh is an injured soldier when he and Jemima meet in a humorous way. He recognizes a lonely soul in Jemima. Their courtship is in secret and their feelings grow. But he is a soldier without much promise and he can be sent back to war. Will he allow their love to drift away?

Twelve Drummers Drumming by Emily E.K. Murdoch is the first story in her new historical holiday romance series, Twelve Days of Christmas, and as usual she has written a wonderful story. 🎄❤️🔥 If you haven’t enjoyed stories from this author this novella is a wonderful chance to enjoy her work. Also please note that although this is a novella, Murdoch has a way of packing a completely satisfying story even in under 200 pages, you won’t be disappointed! This series The Twelve Days of Christmas is meant to be enjoyed “backwards” starting with twelve, however it can apparently be enjoyed in any order.

I found this introduction story to be highly entertaining, full of wonderful characters, includes a lot of passionate encounters between two characters who set the pages on fire! I loved every word!

The Blurb:
“Meet the Fitzroy family: twelve cousins falling in love over Christmastime!

It’s 1813, and twelve drummers drumming are about to bring love into Jemima's life…

Jemima Fitzroy is tired of being ignored by her loud, rambunctious family - especially as she attempts to campaign for veterans in a world that doesn't appreciate them.

Soldiers are returning home from Napoleonic France, and Captain Hugh Rotherham knows he will never be the same again. Not just because of what he's seen, but because of what he's seeing right now: a startlingly beautiful woman who stirs something so passionate in it, the drumming of his heart matches that of his regiment.

Jemima knows she shouldn't be meeting this soldier without her family's knowledge. Hugh knows he cannot cross the line from respectability to scandal.

It doesn't matter. Twelve drummers drumming will change their lives - and the rhythm that can tease out exquisite pleasure…

Follow each of the Fitzroy women as they cause nothing but scandal and intrigue across the ton and try to keep their exploits quiet.

My Thoughts:
The MCs are Jemima Fitzroy and Captain Hugh Rotherham. Jemima is an intelligent woman, only daughter of her father’s first marriage, who wished to reform the treatment and improve the lives of returning war veterans. Jemima would likely be considered a pacifist or peace monger by today’s standards and in the time of the Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815) when multiple groups were asserting the concepts of freedom, liberty, justice, voting rights, and equality among all men, women were still expected to fall under the jurisdiction of man (father, husband, brother, or guardian) the man had the rights of free thought & actions. Women were expected not to worry their pretty inferior heads about anything other than keeping man’s domain in order, expected to marry and provide children, and always defer to the wishes of the man who controls them. It was very risqué for a woman to concern herself with important matters such as social reform and conditions of veterans. I thought Jemima’s character was very well created and perfect for the era of England and of course, perfect for Captain Hugh Rotherman. 😉

This first story features Jemima, not as loud as her cousins, but an intelligent and strong-minded woman who wants to make conditions better for the veterans returning from the war. The fight becomes all the more personal when she meets and forms a connection with Captain Hugh Rotherham, a returning soldier. They begin a forbidden romance, as Jemima meets with Hugh without her family's knowledge. Hugh is dealing from a lot from what he's seen and experienced in the war, but Jemima stirs a passion within him that he is afraid will end in scandal.
This wounded hero and overlooked heroine made an intriguing couple and I enjoyed the story as they grew closer and got to know each other better. This was a great beginning and I look forward to continuing the series.

she can’t help but by swept up by the intensity of Captain Hugh Rotherham. Home from war, he is drawn to her fierce spirit. The next few weeks of getting to know each other are a whirlwind. In the end love wins out (for it wouldn’t be a true romance story without a HEA). I found their story to truly delve into some deeper aspects for courtship, like understanding that changing your views does not mean changing who you are. That in love one can grow and adapt as they learn. Hugh brings out a softer side of Jemima, where she can come across as somewhat self-cantered, you realize this is simply a way of coping with her feelings of loneliness. A truly beautiful story.

I received a copy of this from Netgalley and this is my freely given opinion.

This is the first book it would appear of a series of Christmas novella's coming from Emily E. K. Murdoch. This one is about the eldest daughter, Jemima Fitzroy, of a blended family. She is the only daughter of Arthur and his first wife. The first wife died when Jemima was quite young, and Arthur remarried a widow who also brought 2 of her own daughters to the family, and then the stepmother and Arthur had three more daughters.

Jemima, despite being the eldest, has a lot of feelings of neglect and resentment towards her family. She looks different from her sisters, and it would seem that she feels that she is not as attractive, liked, or given the attention that she feels the others get, especially as she is rather blunt and prickly in her beliefs and manners. The story opens with her step sister Caroline announcing her engagement to a young doctor, and Jemima's feelings of being jealous over the attention Caroline getting and being disregarded and misunderstood, especially when her stepmother makes some thoughtless statement cementing Jemima's feelings.

This leads to her having a snit and leaving the house angry. While out, she has a collision with a wounded soldier during a parade, and the encounter is fraught with frustration and angry words. Captain Hugh Rotherham is the soldier.

They collide again soon afterwards, and despite their differing beliefs and initial apparent lack of kinship, Hugh and Jemima are attracted to each other, and Hugh appreciates Jemima's intelligence and blunt speech. Jemima cannot believe that Hugh would be attracted to her, since her self esteem is rather poor, considering she feels her family and others like her sisters more.

This was a story set during the Christmas period that had some very prickly, defensive, emotionally complex main characters, that at first glance were not very likeable, but the prickliness hides a lot of hurt and self doubt on both their parts. There were some complex emotions and family relationships, and I felt that the story was not given enough justice in novella form.

Slow start to quick story

At the beginning, I wondered a few times why I was reading this and had already bought several of the books. Then Jemima developed into an interesting woman with a lot to learn. Hugh is a complex man that it feels like we only scratched the surface of him.

Interesting start to a new series by Emily EK Murdoch. There are three Fitzroy brothers, all living in different cities with 12 daughters. This is Jemima's story who is the oldest of six in her family. She feels ignored by her family and that she just doesn't fit.
Captain Hugh Rotherham has returned from the war in France and it is love at first sight as he spies Jemima at a parade for returninIg soldiers. Jemima is a pacifist and advocate for the soldiers returning from the War.
Despite their differences and the insecurities of both main characters, Jemima and Hugh grow strong and confident together.
Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

This was one engaging and well put together novella that promises so much more to come!
There is a great fluidity to its flow that kept me reading throughout this character led romance. That had enough drama, character flaws and vulnerabilities, as well as, wit and unexpectedness infused into its pages that when you consider this being a quick read was rather impressive. With a delicious injection of heated intimacy, echoes of festive warmth and sibling rivalry, to add heart and misunderstandings as well as enough promise, in the form of where this new series will go, to keep you intrigued.
I'll admit, Jemima's tendency to bluntly speak her mind  took a little bit of warming too, especially as occasionally she strayed into rudeness. However, the more I read, the more she softened and the more I liked and grew to understand her frustrations, loneliness and feelings of invisibility. Yet, it was the spark of instant attraction between herself and the fascinatingly deep, wounded Captain, Hugh - she literally repeatedly strumbles into - that stole the limelight for me, kept me reading and ultimately awakened my liking and understanding of Jemima as a person and them as a couple.
I loved their chance encounters, especially the subconscious openess and vulnerable intimacy that lay beneath the boldness, sometimes curt and often emotionally revealing interactions.  The chemistry built from a deeply profound recognition of souls, almost hidden beneath a protective need to erect walls, that crumbled into a comfort and spark of kindred spirit understanding, which allowed them to be bold and forthright whilst still leaving room for uncertainity and insecurity to seep through their fascination, to add an element of realism and fear of rejection to their relationship.
Overall, making this a really enjoyable read and not just because I'm always drawn to a wounded hero and Hugo intrigued and held my affection so effortlessly. But because it had warmth, misunderstandings, unexpected revelation but more delightfully the development of a sweetly charming romance that never once fell flat as this well matched couple had the ability to see to the heart and pain that lay hidden in the depth of each others eyes. Manifesting in an addictive cocktail of understanding, deep connection and heated attraction.
Futhermore, I'm intrigued where Murdoch will take us next, as we become so much more deeply acquainted with the Fitzroy ladies/cousins as she develops her unique take on the theme - Twelve Days of Christmas! I will definitely be reading book 2!!

STRAP IN because I have some THOUGHTS about this book:

Jemima is a shrew - she's opinionated, prickly, self absorbed, direct to the point of rudeness and is constantly berating her family about not caring about the war in France (while also doing NOTHING to help sufferers at all). Hugh is a down on his luck Captain of a regiment who injured his leg in the war and they meet when he crashes into her at a parade.

I COULD NOT STAND MOST OF THIS BOOK. I tried SO hard to like it but Jemima is the worst. We're supposed to feel bad for her since her mother died and her stepmother focuses on her natural born daughters more but really she's just unlikable. She doesn't seem to try to be close with her step mom or sisters and basically has nothing good to say about anyone, nor do we ever see anyone really treat her poorly. She doesn't try to actually help people who are suffering in the war and instead just lectures everyone about how great pacifism is (while being surrounded by homeless people and wounded veterans). She's made out to be beautiful but apparently no one noticed or cared about her when she "came out" in society (or could get past her horrid personality) until Hugh?

Then we have the relationship? What relationship!? They meet at a parade, she basically makes him walk into her and then berates an injured man for falling. Yes, they talk a bit and hit it off a bit, yes he helps her with some packages.... But THAT'S IT. There's constant talk of the rush / the connection they feel but I don't see anything and we barely know anything about the man or why he's so in love with her, especially since almost every time they meet she treats him TERRIBLY!

Lastly, the story is so meandering and lifeless and then the "hot and spicy" sex scene? WHAT WAS THAT. That was some of the lamest, most unsexy lovemaking I've ever read. Is it super important, no - but when a book specifies how spicy and intense it is, I was expecting way more and did not receive it.

They were meant to meet!

Jemima was the eldest of the Fitzroy family and always felt that she and her feelings had been ignored. After an argument at her step sisters engagement she stormed out to think. She suddenly heard the sounds of drumming. Some of the soldiers had returned from the war and were marching with the drummers, but she noticed that one person seemed to be set apart from the rest. He had more medals than the others and was walking on crutches.

When their eyes met she felt the sudden pull and explosion of desire. For some reason, she couldn’t move out of his way and he ended up falling on top her in the middle of the street.

Captain Hugh Rotherham had noticed when he first looked into her eyes that he felt something. War had taken a lot from him, his soul was damaged yet when he had looked into her eyes he had seen a kindred spirit much like himself who had suffered a great hurt.

Two broken souls who recognised each other, I loved what kept happening when they bumped into each other, it made me smile and it touched my heart when she realised that her dad did know her as a person and had always looked out for her.

A different take on a love story with a Christmas vibe which I did enjoy, it does seem that it finished quite quickly but if you look into the wording, they had already committed themselves and knew their love would last a lifetime.

I’m looking forward to the next in the series and I hope as with most of Emily’s amazing stories it brings back characters you have already met.

A great start to a new series. Jemina is the eldest of Arthur's daughter. Her Mother died at her birth and three years later he remarried. Her stepmother had two daughters already, Caroline and Arabella and then subsequently three more. So there's 8 in the family. I had an Elizabeth Barrett vibe with so many sisters but Arthur doesn't seem to get the time to have a one to one with Jemima. Jemima is a pacifist and the others in her family don't understand her activism. In such a large family Jemima feels isolated, lonely and different, think Elose of the Bridgertons. Caroline becomes engaged and even more focus moves to her. Jemima is angry and leaves the house in a rage. It's at this point she sees the 12 drummers drumming and knocks over a soldier, Hugh. Over the next week or so to avoid the huge fuss over the engagement party Jemima seeks solace in the park and Hugh's budding friendshp. He understands her viewpoint and is sympathetic to her anger and frustration having suffered similar himself. Arthur invites Hugh to the party. At the party a great uncle of Caroline's doctor fiancee dies and I think it looks like there's another story peeling off there....Jemima at last gets to talk to her father and a ray of hope starts to appear and she realises she is valued by Arthur. It's mainly kisses until the end and like other reviewers I did wonder about the full on passion when Hugh was likely to be returning to the battle front.

I'm eager to read others in this series. Lovely start.

Twelve Drummers Drumming by Emily EK Murdoch is a little more difficult to get into than most of Murdoch’s books. It is a love-at-first-sight book as well as a spinster-to-bride story. Jemima is the eldest of six sisters. Well, she is her father’s daughter, the others being her step-mother’s, several with her father. She feels like she doesn’t count in the household and now Caroline is engaged and she and her wedding all all that count. She is a radical. Totally against the war, and even more against how the soldiers are treated when they return home. She is at a rally when she is knocked down my one of these soldiers. This one walks with a cane and when she meets his eyes she is in thrall. When can she see him again? Well, she does and their relationship progresses nicely until he decides he is not good enough for her.

This is a very modern book. Jemima is an excellent character, well written by Murdoch, very independent. Captain Hugh Rotherham. She places herself she thinks he is likely to be and there he is. They get on well and establish an actual relationship by talking. She invites him home. All looks to be progressing nicely, until of course, Caroline’s engagement ball. He promised he’d come but she waits and waits. This is a nicely done book, the first of a series, all of which I expect we’ll see by Christmas. Can’t wait!
