Author Tess Harrow is looking to get back in the town of Winthrop's good graces after she uncovered not one, but two long-forgotten murders. With the perfect plan of combining her new book release with her bookstore's grand opening she'll have the chance to wine and dine the locals and some big press contacts.
But the night before the party, Tess is greeted by a surprise: her mother has come for a visit, with her much-younger new boyfriend in tow…a boyfriend her daughter Gertrude recognizes as the notorious Levi Parker, a man recently connected to the deaths of three elderly widows.
Tess immediately alerts Sheriff Boyd about Levi and his suspicious past, but it's already too late—Levi Parker is found dead and Tess's mother is starting to look like the prime suspect. Bernadette swears she didn't murder Levi, and Tess is doing her best to maintain her mother's innocence, but too many coincidences keep stacking up. With the whole town seemingly against her family, it's up to Tess to get to the bottom of the story before it's too late.
Tamara Berry is an Edgar Award winning author of cozy mysteries. She has a B.A. degree in English Literature from Eastern Washington University. In addition to books, she has mad love for all things TV, movies, and pop culture.
She also writes romances under the pennames Lucy Gilmore and Tamara Morgan.
Murder Off the Books by Tamara Berry is the third book in the By the Book Mysteries series. This cozy mystery is slightly more gritty and gripping than many. It is also laugh-out-loud funny in places.
Tess Harrow is a bestselling thriller writer who has inherited her grandfather’s rustic cabin in the woods near Winthrop, Washington as well as his hardware store. She and her daughter Gertrude (Gertie) have updated the cabin and converted the hardware store into an independent bookstore called Paper Trail. Tess has timed the grand opening of her bookstore with the release of her latest thriller. But things don’t go smoothly. The night before the party, Tess’s mother Bernadette (Bee) Springer comes for a visit with her much younger boyfriend. Gertie recognizes him from a podcast as Levi Parker, a man suspected of murdering three elderly widows. Is Bee slated to be number four?
Tess has a hard time separating her fictional detective’s methods, which aren’t always “by the book,” and local Sheriff Victor Boyd’s method of following procedure, which leads to some fascinating and funny interchanges between the two. Their chemistry creates a fun dynamic that adds to the enjoyment of the story. Dealing with real law enforcement officers is harder than she expected. The normally calm and levelheaded sheriff doesn’t stay that way as he interacts with Tess. Tess is strong-willed and intelligent, but sometimes gets into some tough situations. Additionally, Gertie continues to enjoy being part of a murder investigation a little too much for Tess’s comfort.
For book lovers, readers not only get a main character who is a thriller writer, but there is a bookmobile that makes the rounds of the local communities and a deputy that has written a science fiction novel in her spare time. Additionally, there is a podcaster and her producer in town following Levi and a journalist that is supposed to be shadowing Tess for a week. Themes include family relationships, friendship, murder, trust, putting down roots, jealousy, a hint of romance, and much more.
The writing is terrific. However, the opening scene wasn’t quite as dramatic as that in book two of the series. Despite this, the characters, as well as the story, quickly engage readers. The plot is absorbing and intriguing with a storyline that has a few red herrings, a couple of surprises, and lots of humor. For a small and touristy town, there’s a lot happening in it. The author brilliantly portrayed the feeling of the town and its various characters. I enjoy the regular cast of characters in this series and look forward to seeing what happens to them next.
Overall, this engaging and funny novel pulled me into the storyline and the lives of the characters. If you enjoy excellent cozy mysteries with a little extra grit, then I recommend that you check out this series. I am looking forward to finding out what happens in the next book of the series.
Poisoned Ped Press and Tamara Berry provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently set for May 30, 2023.
---------------------------------------- My 4.23 rounded to 4 stars review is coming soon.
Another fun book in this very entertaining series.
Tess Harrow is preparing to open her new book store and launch her latest book at the same time. Sadly all her preparations are overshadowed when her mother arrives in town with a much younger man in tow. When he is murdered her mother is the obvious suspect and Tess feels obliged to investigate.
I really enjoy the characters in this series. Tess is always fun to watch and her daughter Gertie is the kind of teenager we would all like to have. Two undercover FBI agents and the local police make for more interest and entertainment, and one of them is the love interest. A slowly developing love interest but each book in the series brings increasing hope for a happy conclusion one day.
I recommend this book, and indeed the whole series so far, to anyone who enjoys a good cosy mystery.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
In this third trip to the wilds of Washington state, we find Tess and Gertrude on the cusp of Tess's new bookstore opening, in the old hardware store that her grandfather owned. They didn't know that Bee, Tess's mom and Gertie's grandmother, would appear tor the opening and that her much younger man friend would be there as well. But Levi, reputed to have killed older women but never convicted, is there in Winthrop. But not for long, as someone poisoned him, and Bee is the number one suspect. That and a murder podcaster steal all the attention from the bookstore opening. This is a great addition to the series with a very complicated mystery to solve and many different suspects in the picture. It turns out that there are secrets all around and Tess has a way of unpeeling layers to find answers. Great and satisfying end. Looking forward to the next story. I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review. All thoughts are mine only.
Thriller writer Tess Harrow and her daughter Gertie lived in the small town of Winthrop and the arrival of Tess' mother put a spanner in the works for Tess' release of her latest novel, which was combined with the opening of her bookshop. With the arrival of a famous podcaster and her crew, the customers Tess had thought were hers, diverted. And when the much younger man who had accompanied Bernadette (Bee) ended up dead, and Bee was suspected of his murder, Tess immediately knew she had to find the real killer, because she knew her mother hadn't done it. Her book launch/bookshop opening didn't happen...
Sheriff Victor Boyd tried to keep Tess out of his investigation, but everything seemed to be aimed at keeping her in it. With her worry over Gertie and Bee, she was determined to solve the murder, but when a second body was found, and Tess thought she knew the answers, the danger she invited in was swift to follow.
Murder off the Books is the 3rd in By the Book Mysteries by Tamara Berry and it was fun and filled with entertainment. The characters are great - Tess is smart and strong, although she can't keep out of any investigation; Gertie is perfect, and Bee was amusing. I'm very much enjoying the series and look forward to #4. Recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
This is a well done cozy and kept my attention throughout. It was a murder mystery that was complex with a lot of threads to be woven together to fit and Tamara Berry did a great job. I liked the lead character, Tess who is a mystery/thriller writer and is opening a new bookstore and launching her latest book at the same time. I also enjoyed her daughter, Gertrude. The relationship between Tess and the Sheriff was interesting.
The book surrounded an accused murderer, Levi Parker, who had been cleared and now has some sort of relationship with Tess's mom, Bernadette. Then Levi is found dead. Also, there is a famous podcaster, Neptune Jones, who has been following Levi and using his murder accusations as a central theme of her podcasts. Then there are a couple of FBI characters who are tracking something going on in the town. Tess is trying hard to find out what is really going on as it looks like her Mom may be the number one suspect in Levi's murder.
There are a lot of characters in the book to keep track of but they are all important to the story. This book kept my attention throughout and I enjoyed this cozy.
Thanks to Poisoned Pen Press through Netgalley for an advance copy. This book will be published on May 30, 2023.
I really enjoyed the first two books in this series [I laughed so hard in reading each one] and was highly anticipating book 3 - unfortunately what was a cure and fun series went both completely over-the-top and OFF. THE. RAILS. and left me wondering what I had just read.
What I liked: * Gertie. What an amazing kid [reminds me of one of my great-nieces]. Even as the petulant teen she is [and what teen hasn't ever been embarrassed by their parent I ask you?], she is awesome and is OFTEN way smarter than the adults around her. * Edna St. Clair. Who knew? ;-) * Opening the bookstore. THIS is always a good thing!! * The humor. Though there was less of this in this read, it was still mostly there and I did find myself snorting out loud in laughter quite a few times in the book. * The great narration [though I DID wonder if she rolled her eyes as much as I did while she was reading this].
What I didn't like: Pretty much the rest of the book. Sigh. * Stealing equipment and being told to destroy evidence by the two Feds who are living in Winthrop is both unbelievable and dumb. We, the readers, are smarter than this and I doubt anyone reading this [even the 5 starers] think this behavior is okay. * The wishy-washy handling of the relationship between Tess and the Sheriff. We already KNOW how the Sheriff feels. That has been covered in the previous books so all that goes on in this one feels very juvenile and...weird [and I am not even going to talk about the end]. * The love triangle [even though that is mostly resolved by the end..I hope]/the way Tess treats Jared. The way she strings him along to get what she wants is mean and cruel and made me like her a lot less. * Tess's Mom. IYKYK. UGH. * The whole end/reveal. Tess acted ridiculously, ignored laws, and lacked even the minor common sense most main characters have. The stuff she did makes me truly wonder if she loves her daughter at all [and wants her to grow up with a mother who IS NOT DEAD]. Clearly she cares little for the law and thinks she both knows better than anyone in law enforcement and can do their job better than they can. It was very off-putting. * I read the whole book, but it was tough. I wanted to skip ahead many times. The whole story-line seemed flat [and at times, totally meh]. Which leads me to this conclusion: I often wondered, while reading/listening to this, if someone else wrote this. So much of what made the previous 2 books amazing was totally missing here and left me missing the characters that I loved in the first two books. It was, at times, very frustrating.
I will continue with the series because one bad book doesn't chase me away from a series [as I have said before, I have read 4-5 books in a series in hopes they get better because I like the characters, setting, etc and it won't be any different for this one]; I can only hope that in the next book we get back to what made this series great.
Thank you to NetGalley, Tamara Berry, and Poisoned Pen Press for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Murder Off The Books is the third book in the By The Book Mysteries series by Tamara Berry.
Tess, a crime author, and her young teen daughter, Gertrude(Gertie), have decided to make Winthrop, Wash., their home. The cabin Tess inherited from her grandfather has been renovated, and the hardware store where bones had been found under the floor has been turned into an independent bookstore that is about to have its grand opening.
The evening before the grand opening, Tess is shocked by the arrival of her mother, Bernadette(Bea) Springer. While Tess, Gertie, and Nikki, undercover FBI agent and driver of the local library’s bookmobile, are having dinner at the local hotel, Bea’s boy toy, Levi Parker, arrives and joins them for dinner. Gertie is quick to point out that he is the person who is suspected of killing three wealthy widows. She quickly points out that she has seen him on various murder-podcast fan boards. Tess’s first thought is that Parker is after Bea’s money, and then he will kill her. Parker’s body is found the following day dead from what will be learned is poisoning.
But now Tess has to worry about her mother becoming the prime suspect in Parker’s murder. Tess, Gertie, and Nikki will set off to find the killer so that Bea’s name can be cleared. They will find that there are several possible people. There’s Neptune, a podcaster, the producer of her podcast, and an author staying at Tess’s, who claims to be an article about her and others.
The story is well-written, plotted, and has plenty of red herrings that kept me guessing until the end who the killer was. The characters are well-developed, believable, and believable and seem like old friends. The series is alight-hearted cozy, giving the reader a few chuckles and laughs. I particularly enjoyed Gertie. She is intelligent, funny, and particularly helpful to her mother and others around her. The book read at a good pace and was hard to put down.
I’m looking forward t the next book in this humorous series.
I loved the first two in this series so I couldn’t wait to read this one. I found that this one was different that then first two. First, Tess’ mother was annoying and really ruined this one for me. Second, the story didn’t grab me like with the previous books. This one seemed to drag on and did not hold my interest. Third, I wasn’t excited about the potential love triangle (never am) but I’m hoping that’s been resolved. The budding romance between Tess and the sheriff makes them out to be young teenagers in love; they seem so immature. There was a lot of humor in this one which saved it for me but I’m hoping the next one in the series is better.
I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.
Author and new bookstore owner, Tess Harrow, anticipates her grand opening event, but reality is sadly lacking with the concurrent arrival of her mother, a suspected serial killer of wealthy older ladies and a famed podcaster. Pandemonium at all fronts, but Tess sees her way clear to keep her mother from being the next victim or best suspect. A tad on the mapcap side, but definitely an enjoyable cozy. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Tess Harrow has timed the release of her new book to coincide with the opening of her new bookstore. Her daughter Gertrude has all kinds of food planned too. Now they just need the community to turn out to make the event a big success.
Her mother has made a surprise visit with her "boyfriend" the day before though and that could ruin the whole event. Gertrude recognizes the younger man as Levi Parker, a man that has been linked to three elderly widows' deaths. What the heck is he doing with her mother?
Later, Tess tries to get Sheriff Boyd involved but he is attending to a death at the local hotel. She is shocked to learn the dead man is none other than Levi Parker and his number one suspect is her mother, Bernadette.
Add to that a true crime podcaster comes to town tailing Levi and a "fancy journalist" is in town following Tess around to "get a good look at her writing process". Can she open her bookstore, launch her new book and prove her mother isn't a killer? Or will her whole life blow up and chaos reign?
_____
In this 3rd By The Book Mystery, Tess wants to enjoy the fruits of her labor, a book based on a murder she helped solve and the opening of The Paper Trail. Instead, she must solve another or at least help Sherrif Boyd catch another killer. Tess is a strong main character who can think on her feet and her daughter is an impressive amateur assistant too. Tess's mother, Bernadette held back a lot of information making it pretty hard to keep her out of jail. I enjoyed the way Tess and Gertrude have continued to evolve. The addition of Bernadette added angst and humor in perfect amounts.
The mysteries were complicated with a lot of moving parts and characters weaving in and out. Twists, turns, and a bit of mayhem, along with plenty of suspects kept me guessing from the start. With so much going on, I had to slow down my reading pace because I didn't want to miss any vital clues. Tess had to work hard to untangle this one and she put herself in danger more than I usually like, but "solving crimes is kind of" her thing and things get suspenseful when she does.
Like the previous two books, Tamara Berry knows how to bring the funny. The character interactions and situations can turn from normal to serious to humorous and back again quickly. I found myself giggling quite a few times. There has also been romantic tension simmering for quite a while. This leads to more humorous moments but by the end, I was smiling as the author was taking this relationship I had been hoping for.
Murder Off the Books features a complex mystery and engaging and entertaining characters. Tess still has a lot to accomplish including getting to work on her next book. It seems she is ready to shake things up fictionally and on the homefront. That makes me excited for this series to continue.
Murder of the Books is the third book in Tamara Berry's By the Book Mysteries series. You all may know by now that this is my favorite cozy mystery series to date. I adore Tess Harrow, her daughter (Gertie), Sheriff Boyd, and we can't forget little old Edna - who I really feel stole the show in the story! When this series ends, I think it would be so much fun to have an Edna novella come out where we see her perspective of different things. She is a hoot!
I love the western town of Wintrop, Washington. It it absolutely one of my favorite book settings that I've read. I would also really like to visit there some day! Special thanks to M over @thepageandstage on Instagram for visiting and creating a reel for me to live vicariously through your adventures!
While this series is still top-tier for me, I will say that this particular storyline wasn't my favorite. There were a number of unlikeable characters introduced, multiple things that made me mad, and I felt some of the characters even acted a bit out of sorts to their usual. It just didn't feel as happy and cozy as her previous books. I'm pleased to say that the ending wrapped up sweetly, but my overall enjoyment of this one doesn't compare to the first two. Hopefully the next installment will get me back on track!
Murder Off the Books by Tamara Berry the 3rd instalment in the "By the Book Mystery" series. I really enjoyed visiting Winthrop, Washington and the seeing how Tess and Gertie were making out in the woods. I enjoy Gertie and now we have her mom Bee who’s a hoot! I like the budding romance between Tess and Sheriff Boyd too.
It was entertaining, full of twists and turns and I didn’t completely guess whodunnit until Tess did.
I highly recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends and I can’t wait for book 4!
I requested and received an Advance Readers Copy from NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.
Author Tess Harrow and her daughter Gertrude make quite a crime solving team in this third installment of the By the Book series. This series has become one of my favorites. The plot of Tess's bookstore opening and the chaos that ensued was interesting and engaging. I enjoyed Tess's mom's quirky personality despite being accused of killing her young lover featured on a true crime podcast. My interest was piqued by a hint of love triangle romance, which I usually dislike.
Thank you Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the ARC of this book. This was an honest review.
Murder Off the Books by Tamara Berry is the third book in the By The Book Mystery series and introduces author Tess Harlow's mother into the scene. Tess has planned a huge event for her bookstore's grand opening and the launch of her latest book, but it could be upstaged by other events going on in town. Tess's mother, Bee, is just as dramatic as Tess, and becomes a suspect for murder when her young "companion", a man suspected of killing rich, older women, is murdered himself. Complicating things is another visitor to the town of Winthrop, Washington - true crime podcast host Neptune Jones who is also determined to prove that Bee is a killer.
In this book, as in the prior two, Tess's teenage daughter Gertie so often comes across as more mature than most of the adults. This is a fun series with unique characters, excellent dialog, and plenty of humor. Tess and Victor, who is the town's sheriff, have had a connection from the very first book, but find it hard to admit their feelings for each other. However, others can see the spark between them even when they don't. This installment is entertaining with a lot to love about the ending that makes me eager to read the next book when it comes out. However, the first book in the series (Buried in a Good Book) is still my favorite.
I received an advance copy of this ebook at no cost from NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.
Tess is back in action and has a murder to solve before someone she loves goes down for it! Once again, this series brings us a book that is equal parts humorous and exciting! The mystery is well crafted and leaves you guessing up until the last moment! The cast of characters are fun and relatable which helps create a better connection to the story and town! I love how real the author makes the teenage angst that Gertie is exhibiting, but also presents it in a humorous way so you can escape real life for a bit while feeling like you have been seen and heard! You are not alone if you have a teenaged daughter who isn't always your biggest fan, yet she still loves and supports you! The connection between all the various characters is well crafted and unique to each one so that you truly feel like you get to know each character. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book as it seems that Tess may be graduating to the big leagues with her investigative and writing skills.
Continuing the BY THE BOOK MYSTERIES Series, Tamara Berry's newest small-town Washington State novel personifies all I turn to Cozy Mysteries to find: gentle humor, heartwarming characters, tension and Suspense, a slow build romance or two, heartfelt humans acting realistically even when that means experiencing grief, greed, envy, and sometimes murderous intent; plus a strong female protagonist who is three-dimensional and not a paper-doll cutout. This Series offers a Suspense author [now hopeful bookseller], who is also a Mama Bear of an adolescent daughter, and who has a cringeworthy mother who readily elicits groans. Here she faces off to a suspected serial killer, a driven true-crime podcaster, a dour sheriff changing personality, a failed grand opening, and money-laundering on a large scale.
Hands down one of my favorite cozy mystery series ever! This was the perfect conclusion to the series. I will be diving back into this series over and over again cause I can’t get enough of Tess and the gang! Now on to read the rest of Berry’s books!
If you are looking for a cozy mystery series with more of an edge and a bit darker than the numerous other ones in this genre, By the Book Mysteries by Tamara Berry, is a series you should check out.
The main character, Tess, is a thriller writer which is what gives this series a bit more grit. She’s not as naive as other amateur sleuths, and it shows especially when she (or her daughter) are trying their hand at lock picking or getting out of being tied to a chair… all in the name of research, of course!
Berry really shines in her character development. Gertie, Tess’s daughter, is inquisitive, fearless, and really interested in murder and all that goes along with it. We meet Tess’s mother, who is even more feisty than Tess, and the love interests of Sheriff Boyd and the undercover agent add a fun dynamic to the books. I’m rooting for the younger agent, but you’ll have to read the book to find out what happens. We also get some great interactions with the town grump, Edna, and I hope we see a lot more of her.
Another great book in the series, and one that I highly recommend.
I have enjoyed this series and am disappointed that the series ends here. While some aspects are wrapped up here, there are plenty of other story lines that beg for more attention and resolution, but since it's been nearly two years since this book was published, looking for more seems futile.
I like most of the characters in these books, especially Gertie, Tess's teenaged daughter. Tess has an incredible group of friends around her, even though a few are gruff and abrupt most of the time. Gertie is flourishing in their new surroundings, and making some good friends of her own.
The murder victim was a visitor to town, although a famous - or infamous? - visitor, so the death attracted a lot of attention. There were several characters who had good reason to want him dead, and I had a handful of them at the top of my list. The actual killer was near the top of my list, but wasn't who I expected it to be. I almost had the motive right, but not quite.
I would love to read more from this series and will keep an eye on the author's works just in case, but it's unlikely to happen.
Thank you Netgalley , Tamara Berry and Poisoned Pen Press for allowing me the opportunity to read an ARC of “Murder Off the Books” due to be published May 30th 2023. This is the third book in the By the Book Mysteries and is set in Winthrop Washington. This book is about mystery author Tess Harrow and her daughter Gertrude. Tess has decided to combine the grand opening of her new bookstore The Paper Trail with the release of her most recent book release “Fury under the floorboards.” Her latest book is based on the most recent murder investigation that Tess helped solve when bones were found in the floorboards of her grandfather’s hardware store. Tess seems to have everything under control with her best friend Nicki helping out by being her event planner. Nicki is a bookmobile librarian and an undercover FBI agent. But she soon realizes she was wrong and she didn’t have everything under control. Tess’s mother Bernadette unexpectedly turns up with her very young boyfriend Levi Parker. Levi Parker was recently suspected of murdering three very wealthy older widows. When Levi soon ends up dead and Bernadette is named the prime suspect Tess feels as if she needs to clear her mothers name. Who killed Levi? Was it Burnedette? You must read this book to find out . Being the third book in a series I thought I’d have a problem getting into the story but I was hooked from the start and it flowed quickly. I will definitely be looking into reading more from this author in the future. If you’re interested in cozy mysteries this book is definitely for you !
Tess’ mother always has to be the center of attention, and this is still the case for Tess’s latest book release, which she planned to coincide with the grand opening of her new bookstore. When a famous podcaster arrives and garners everyone’s attention, all of Tess’ customers abandon her at the blink of an eye. But when a man accompanying Bernadette (Bee, better known as Tess’ mom) ends up dead, and Bee becomes the prime suspect, Tess jumps in to find the killer.
It doesn’t take long for Tess to find herself involved in another murder investigation, nor does it take long for Sherriff Boyd to do his best to keep her out of it. Tess has a lot on her plate this time around; she worries about her teenage daughter, her mother, her shop that has no customers, and her feelings for the Sherriff that won’t go away, and now have expanded to include jealousy. Add in a murder or two, and she has hit an all-time high of worry. No matter what else may be going on, she is determined to catch the killer and clear her mother, but doing so puts a target on her back. Suspects are plentiful, and so are the motives. It takes everything Tess has to unravel the crime and unveil the killer.
The addition of Murder off the Books to the series helps build on a firm foundation of mystery, mixed with personal relationships and human growth. The story is delightful, with just enough intrigue and action to keep you turning the page. Readers love Tess, Gertie, Victor, and even Bee. The bookshop is a wonderful addition, and the ending will leave readers smiling and craving the next installment.
Tess Harrow has gotten used to being a bit of a not universally loved big thing in her hometown of Winthrop, Washington State. A best-selling author and recently acquired bookstore owner she has, with daughter Gertrude's assistance, discovered those responsible for a spate of local killings before the Sheriff, which she knows, hasn't impressed everyone!
With a new novel about to be released Tess decides to combine her store's grand reopening with the book's launch and hopefully win over her many doubters at the same time. Unfortunately, the unannounced arrival of her mother with a younger man in tow changes everything, especially as Gertrude recognizes him as someone with a fatal reputation where elderly widows are concerned. As yet another body is found Tess, to her dismay, finds herself once again investigating while her book and store become the furthest things from anyone's mind!
I thoroughly enjoyed this third book in Tamara Berry's By the Book mystery series and was engaged throughout especially as you don't need to read these books in order. The new characters for this storyline were all feasible killers, and I enjoyed the way their guilt or innocence was gradually revealed. With teasing hints as to what might happen next, I will definitely be continuing with this entertaining series.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a book I thoroughly enjoyed reading.
Tess is finally ready to open her bookstore, but her mother and murder intrude in the third book in the By the Book series.
Tess's mother drops in with a new beau Levi Parker in tow. The twist is, he's under suspicion in the deaths of other elderly widows. Tess is understandably worried for, and also exasperated by, her mother, but when the beau is murdered, she once again dives in to solve the crime.
Her investigation puts even more distance between her and the sheriff with whom she's been hoping to have a relationship. He seems to have friendzoned her in favor of an attractive podcaster who has followed Levi Parker to Winthrop. Tess may save her mother, but it may end her relationship with Sheriff Boyd forever.
Tess isn't perfect. She jumps to conclusions and doesn't seem to understand boundaries. BUT, the series is a lot of fun, and the secondary characters are delightful. Tess's teen daughter Gertrude is undoubtedly smarter than her mom, and also funnier. Tess's FBI bestie Nicki is still trying to break the smuggling ring, but takes time out to help Tess investigate (and provides a buffer).
The series is fun and there are enough red herrings to keep the reader guessing.
3.75 out of 5 stars.
I received an advance copy from Poisoned Pen Press via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I feel like it's not common to have a third in a series keep the same intrigue and interest as the first two, but this series continues and doesn't seem to skip a beat! Another unique story line and another witty adventure for Tess and Gertie, this one action packed from beginning to end.
After wrapping up her most recent book, Tess is hosting a party to celebrate. Her mother comes with a younger strapping gentleman on her arm, however he's suspected of murdering three other women! Famous murder podcaster in tow to report on all the tea, Tess finds herself in a little competition as a body is found and she can't help but do her own investigating. Was it Levi, and if so, is her mom in danger?
I loved the adventure in this one along with some new characters to mix things up a bit. However, the core characters remain and we see their stories and relationships continue to play out. This is one that can be read as a standalone, however is best read in the series as the background of the characters continues through. This is a perfect summer read for mystery lovers, would definitely recommend!
Thank you to Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for an honest review! Already looking forward to book four!
Author Tess Harrow and her daughter, Gertrude, are starting to get a bad reputation due to their involvement in recent murder cases, so Tess has come up with the perfect plan to drum up some positive press. She'll combine her new book release and her bookstore opening into one big event, giving her a chance to wine and dine the locals and some big press contacts. But the night before the party, Tess is greeted by a surprise: her mother has come for a visit, with her much-younger new boyfriend in tow...a boyfriend Gertrude recognizes as the notorious Levi Parker, a man recently connected to the deaths of three elderly widows. I really like this series and the characters. Tess and Gertrude have a fun relationship overall a fun quick read. #MurderOfftheBooks#NetGalley
This series is seriously so much fun. I’m constantly chuckling! I’m loving this town and the characters.
I love Tess & Gertie. They are such a fun mother/daughter duo. I think they make a good sleuthing team! And for the romance with the detective.. what is happening there?!
The mystery was great. I thought it was a little more complex than some other cozies. I had no idea who the killer was this time! I enjoyed the little twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end.
Overall, loved the installment in the series. I’m looking forward to more in the future!
[ Thank you to the publisher & netgalley for the eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own! ]
