The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum--a place with a history of pain and suffering.
Sarah Pearson and Father Luca Janosch are sent to the asylum in West Virginia, America, after the Church receives a mysterious letter stating that ancient secrets lie beneath the facility. Secrets that only Sarah can uncover.
However, when Sarah and Luca arrive, they soon find that the souls of the tortured still roam the halls. What's more, a stranger is monitoring their every move.
Sarah and her friend are forced to put their lives on the line in order to unearth the truth--but are they ready for what they'll find?
The heart-stopping climax will change everything you thought you knew about the world of the Haunted.
Of course, other genres float my boat as well; Sci-Fi, Thrillers, pretty much any Dark Fiction, but Horror is what I call home.
My first novel, Horror in the Woods, was released on in May 2017, and the second, The Demonic, on the the following July hitting multiple best seller lists. Since then, I have authored a number of horror novels that have terrified fans for the past few years.

Sarah Pearson along with Father Luca Janosch is being sent by the Bishop Turnbull to an abandoned asylum that is rumored to be haunted, though the Church fears that something else lurks in the deep dark places of the asylum and they want Sarah and Father Janosch to check it out as it is somehow tied into Sarah's past with Perron Manor.
Though when Sarah and Father Janosch get to the asylum they are met by a man name "Jake" who lets it be known that he is there to protect them which they don't understand the why of it, but they decide to let him come along.
Before they enter the place though a security guard (Trevor) intercepts them letting them know that he watches out for the place and he will go along with them inside. Sarah and Father Janosch are wary of Trevor as they don't understand why he is guarding a place that is abandoned, but they shrug it off and let him go with them as well.
Once they are all inside though things change for the worse as Trevor is not what they thought and the deeper they go, the more Sarah starts having "feelings" of things not being right as her psychic abilities are kicking into overdrive! The asylum comes alive with the ghosts from the past along with something evil and ancient that is stalking Sarah!
What is stalking Sarah? What is haunting the asylum? Does everyone make it out alive? No spoilers here as you will need to read the book!
Thoughts:
This was a great installment in the Haunted series! Though this book took a little time to get going as there was a background buildup to the asylum, but once the characters, Sarah and Father Janosch start exploring the asylum is when the story goes deep into the haunted realm of hell! I was careening through the story from the 30% mark onward flipping through the pages as when things started happening I had a hard time putting the book down!
From the 50% mark forward I had a hard time going to sleep as so much was happening with the characters that my insomnia stayed fueled for a couple or so nights!
This series has been rocking along since the first book with ghosts/demons and this book is no exception as it keeps the fast pace moving at breath taking speed! Looking forward to the next installment to this excellent horror series! Giving this one five Asylum Apparition stars!
Wow. 😥 This is definitely one of my favorites in the series. This ‘takes it to the next level’! It picks up where the last two; Possession and Mother Death left off in a unique way.
I feel like this crept up on me and yet, there it was, this menacing spookiness the entire time. This is what certain books of his are very good at. I won’t realize it and then I will be keyed up and waiting for the other shoe to drop. Creepy good!
I give this book 5 stars because it took me a great horror path. Mountford fuses religion, cults, and sheer determination (on Sarah’s part) together, to wove this gruesome tale!
Now the ending, pissed me the hell off. But somehow I expected it, due to the nature of the series as an entirety.
Synopsis: Sarah & Father Janosch are sent to America to investigate The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. They are sent by the church to investigate if the structure another gateway to Hell. They even hired protection for them, in the form of a body guard named Jake. So much happens and it’s like asylum will not allow them to leave.
I really was genuinely scared with this book. Like I started looking to the side of me (as I work in this field). And I even researched about the asylum. Now I didn’t know this asylum existed in real life, but after I did a lil research, and found out that this place was real, it added another layer of creepiness to the story. Mountford really never fails to impress me.
Lee’s done it again. Written a masterful horror novel, with characters we’ve grown to love. I couldn’t sleep until I’d finished this instalment - it’s currently 4:30am, but I don’t regret a second. This book is terrifying, well written as always and utterly heartbreaking. As I said before - I’m not okay. But I am most definitely waiting with baited breath for the next release.
Oh I wish this book had been a stand alone. Because everything in it was great. The atmosphere, the multi layered characters, the gore, the suspense... Only it was far too short. I love asylum stories (compared to Mother Dead's modern house, this one was perfect for me) and this volume was the perfect blend between Perron Manor and an Asylum story: big place, creepy owner, horrible past (I wish we could have learned much more about that said past). I still can't put a 5 stars because Perron is my absolute favorite, but that's a solid 4,5. Of course, I can't wait to learn more about Sarah's adventures. What she learned in Asylum was a major twist. Talking about twist, that death was heartbreaking (feel my glower L. Mountford, lol), but the plot needs to move on and we've been prepared to such kind of losses along the way.
As much as I look forward to reading the next "Haunted", I hope L. Mountford will take some time to write a new stand alone. In that series, I'm so prepared to the end of the world that the tension is already half-built by page 1. There are tons of great haunted places in England so I'm sure it's only a question of time.
This book, and series, is incredibly written. Sarah and Father Janosch are sent by the Church to West Virginia, USA to investigate an asylum allegedly connected to Sarah's ancestry. The asylum is privately owned, occasionally rented out for ghost investigations and very active. From the first minute they set foot on the ground bad things started happening. Ghost, ghouls, demons, even a former Ghost Investigator that went missing a while back makes an appearance. As they investigate the basement of the asylum, deep, dirty, scandalous secrets are revealed about the Church and the Council. Sarah's faith and beliefs in her faith and friendship will be put to the test. Will the team make it out unscathed or will there be a huge penalty to be paid for the knowledge? It will make your skin crawl. Don't believe me? Then read it yourself but I suggest with the lights on and definitely not while you are alone. Highly recomendei.
Book #6 is the one that apparently hit me the hardest. I wont sit here and type out that I was in awe and tore through the pages because I didn't. I actually took longer reading this one than I should have because I just felt like I knew where it was going ( I mean I've been on this journey with Sarah, Luca, David, and the demons for 6 books now ) I did not however expect my f-ing heart to be shattered into a million pieces during the last 88% of the book.
I cant really summarize this one without giving away the book in whole but i clearly am enjoying the series otherwise I wouldn't be this far along into it.
But I will not say I'm particularly happy with how this one ended. again, my heart is broken and I will never forgive Lee Mountford for causing that heartbreak.
Unlike the first 5 books of the series, The Asylum is starting full action from the very beginning. Not only the name of the book is already giving shrivels due to the nature of what such a place represents, add some more guts, blood, demons and petrifying characters only exacerbate the flow.
The protagonist is in the middle of it all, torn between good and evil, fighting for what seems to be right. But what is to choose when you’re born the very way Hell planned long ago, in a dark ritual, you loose family and friends in ugly ways and yet you fight to be better and not succumb to the powers, dark knowledge and pressure from every direction and even your inner self?
The story gets more complex now, adding new characters which are undoubtedly up for no good, yet are a mystery which only the next books will uncover.
Strongly recommend to read especially before sleep.
Wow, this author doesn't disappoint with this new book in the series Asylum, even the main setting of the characters being in the Asylum got my nerves on edge.
Sarah and Luca are sent on another mission with possible devastating consequences for all. But Jake who is a new character well all is not what it seems with him, there's just something off.
Whilst reading the book this author had me on the edge of my seat. Not only that I could feel my heart rate quickening, it was so tense and unnerving and absolutely creepily shockingly I had moments where I had to have a little break to calm down. This series is definitely not one to be missed.
If you want a book to make you leave the light on at night go on I dare you.
Brilliant read, looking forward to the next instalment!!!
Whilst I enjoyed the other books in this series and scored them highly, this one, in my opinion, was way over the top. I noted the number of 5 star ratings it has attracted but I really couldn't get into the story. It all seemed far too fantastical. A real shame but, I'm very much in the minority on this one.
I almost didn't read this book because I'm uncomfortable with Mountford's repeated use of sexual assault in the last 2 books I've read of his. However, as a psych major I saw the title asylum and knew I wanted to read at least one more. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the asylum in which it was referring to was the one and only Trans Alleghany Asylum from my home state (which was a surprise since the author was from the UK). My mom toured this asylum when it was still an active hospital when she was in the 6th grade for school. To the day she died in 2017 she continued to have nightmares about the things she had seen and heard during her visit. Which made reading this story much more vivid and eerie for me. I was a bit disappointed to see that sexual assault was again used in this story. However, knowing how asylums were back then, I believe this to be a very real occurrence between orderlies and patients so it didn't bother me as much. It just made the fictional story feel all the more real. I wish I had noticed beforehand this was part of a different series from The Demonic and The Mark as I didnt read the ones prior to the Asylum but after reading it, I want to go back and start from the beginning and continue after Asylum so I can also find out what happens afterward. I already recommended this book to one of my sister's since she not only is a horror movie fan but because of the fact its about the asylum our mom had nightmares about. I look forward to exploring this series a bit more myself.
Some places never stop screaming… even after everyone inside is gone.. 😬👻
In Asylum, the sixth book of the Haunted series, Lee Mountford drags us back into the shadows, this time to a long-abandoned mental institution where evil never truly left 💀 What starts as another investigation into dark, supernatural forces quickly turns into a nightmare of possession, religious corruption and suffering that blurs the line between human cruelty and pure demonic horror🩸👻 Without giving too much away, let’s just say this story doesn’t pull any punches, it’s emotional, disturbing and packed with shocking moments that stay under your skin long after you close the book 😱
I’ll be honest, this one had me completely hooked from the start. The setting, the tension, the creeping dread… it all screamed 5 stars at first 🤯 There’s more action here than in some of the earlier books and the pacing keeps you on edge from page one. You barely get a chance to breathe before the next twisted revelation hits 🤫 But somewhere near the end, things started to unravel a bit for me.. it all happened so fast that it almost felt rushed. There was so much happening in such a short time that I couldn’t fully absorb every emotional hit. Still, the story itself remains powerful, dark and genuinely unsettling in that signature Haunted way 👀
What I really loved this time was the emotional undercurrent, it’s not just gore and chaos; there’s tragedy woven into the horror 🖤 You can almost feel the hopelessness lingering in every hallway of the asylum, the echo of pain that refuses to fade. The lore of the series keeps expanding too, connecting threads from previous books while adding new layers of mystery. It’s the kind of worldbuilding that makes you both terrified and fascinated, you want to know more, even when you know it’ll haunt your dreams later 😬
Mountford’s writing once again proves why he’s one of my favorite horror authors ✍ His storytelling is cinematic, every scene feels alive (and often covered in blood 😏). He knows exactly how to build atmosphere and how to make you care about the people trapped in his nightmares, even as you secretly hope the demon wins for the drama of it all 😈🤫 His ability to balance emotional horror with pure chaos is something not many authors can pull off.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ — A haunting and visceral continuation of the series, gripping from start to finish, but just missing that emotional breathing space that could’ve made it unforgettable 💫
If you ever wondered what hell might look like behind locked asylum doors… this book gives you a front-row seat. Just don’t expect to leave with your sanity intact 😈👻
This is not the last book in the series! I thought it was! Argh! And to top it off it's a cliff hanger!!!! I can't find info on when the next book is coming out so far but I'll keep looking. Other than all that I liked the book though. I need to write a spoiler filled review/synopsis so that I know what happened in this book when the next one comes out but I really don't want to. I'm lazy.
Big things:
There is another secret organization, other than the secret church council, and it's fighting for hell's side and they are called the order
One of the six members of the secret church council is a secret agent actually working for the order. It told us which one it was but I don't remember.
Luca, the priest, sacrificed himself to save Sarah and told her to make his sacrifice worth it. Pazuzu, the demon, killed him and pulled off his head in an effort to get Sarah to turn. (Turning meaning let herself be possessed)
Sarah touches a big black mass Marcus blackwater calls the heart and she is given all this knowledge from the devil. Part of it being like that God was a mistake and came from the darkness but that's all we really get to hear of what she learned. We know it's bad though.
Because of Luca's sacrifice Sarah holds on, doesn't turn, and tries to escape.
She gets trapped by all the many spirits at the asylum and also pazuzu and they chase her to the roof. She is about to give up when she gets a call from David!
He tells her that Chloe, Sarah's dead sister, came to him and told him Sarah was in trouble and she couldn't reach her. Sarah tells him it's not worth it and she is going to give up but he reminds her of Emma. Chloe's daughter and Sarah's niece (that we haven't heard of or seen since the third book lol). Sarah gets the courage to fight for her.
However by this point the asylum is surrounded by the owner of the asylum/member of the order Simon Hill, and a bunch of grunts with machine guns.
They capture Sarah and lock her up with Luca's head and that's the end.

OMFG! With this being my first, yes, I know it is book 6 in the series.....however I understood it perfectly!!
This audiobook came up on my Scribd page and it was the only one in the series...so, I said what the hell, and listened to it. If you were to take 'The Evil' (a horror movie from the 80's, and a great one at that!), and mix it with the horror classic from the 70's 'The Exorcist' this is what would be the outcome!
This book started out slow, but though good. BUT; once I hit the 20% or so mark it takes off like a horror classic that you are not soon to forget.
When Sarah Pearson and Father Luca Janosch are sent by the catholic church to investigate an abandoned asylum, they immediately meet a man by the name of Jake, who tells them he 'is here to protect you' they soon question themselves should they have come here in the first place? Now this book does connect to Mountford's "Perron Manor" books, but even though I had not read them, though I do own them though, the book was perfect to read as a standalone book....and what a horror gem it is! Triggers: extreme scenes of body dismemberment, torture, demonic possession, and hauntings. If this type of book offends you....this is NOT a book for you.
I LOVED LOVED this book and now cannot wait to read them all. 5 *****
After following David in the last installment this books starts as he and Sarah are sent on separate missions and we see how her mission plays out. Sarah and Luca are sent on a more dangerous mission and are aided by Jake as their protector with a military background. Sent to an asylum after a mysterious letter was sent to the Order we find ourselves in a creepy setting with a whole host of paranormal activity to keep the trio on their toes. This book does not let up and is manic throughout. Staying close to the thread of the series and capitalising on what we already know as well as filling in some blanks to both make sense of things and make us ask more questions this is a whirlwind. Some overlaps that have been cleverly placed bring the previous book and this together are a great touch. Next book please, I'm not sure if I can wait!
Mountford is an excellent horror author. After finishing Asylum, I noticed how much suspense is built simply by knowing things that the characters do not. The moment Stuart Hill was described as having black hair with piercing blue eyes, I knew immediately we would see a return of one of the Blackwaters. Rather than supernatural fears, Asylum reminds of the worst of humanity via cruelty to women and the underprivileged. The sad thing is while this specific story isn't true, lobotomies and experiments absolutely happened. What's scarier? Demons lurking for souls or the calculated brutality of humans?

Whoa. Every time I think these books can’t get any more twisted, another one comes along with even more horror & depravity, & I’m left at the end of the book sputtering, “What the hell?!?!” I’ve also noticed with each book so far, I spend an insane amount of time not trusting the characters are who/what they seem. That was certainly true of Asylum, where the battle between good & evil is ramped up to cataclysmic levels. C’mon, Lee Mountford! Get cracking on book # 7! The cliffhangers are killing me.
Sarah and Father Janovich have their new assignment. To check out a famous asylum in Virginia. They are supposed to find out if it's another Gate to Hell. What they learn there is beyond anything they could have ever imagined. Is this the end of their investigation or the end of humanity itself?
This ending was horrific in the most epic way!! LovecraftIan hopelessness slowly fermenting to the end. Enjoyed every minute of it!! Best way to enjoy this is when read in order. Anything this guy writes I recommend!!
Another thrilling paranormal experience! Sarah and the Priest are sent to the United States. To West Virginia to the Trans-Allegheny Asylum, one of the most haunted places ever! Plans are in place to turn Sarah to the dark side using the demon that hides within the asylum. They get a body guard this trip whose not there to protect them if Sarah turns. Someone will die and they will try very hard to turn Sarah. Will they succeed? On the the next book to find out.
Well, I have just finished reading the latest instalment by Lee Mountford. You, sir, are one of 2 authors who have managed to scare the hell out of me. Thankyou. This book, and series, is incredibly written. It will make your skin crawl and have you jumping at every little sound. Don't believe me? Then read it yourself but I suggest with the lights on and definitely not while you are alone. Highly recommended
This is book 6 already, and the descriptions are a bit corny. In fact, when I read book 5 and book 6 back to back, book 6 was a bit sloppy. Yet, it feels like a short peace before the storm because I learned that the remaining three books (7 8 9) will be published in 2023. I will wait for the epic conclusion. Otherwise, the current book is simply mediocre: too many "reminders", sometimes even repetitive, and Parzuzu no longer gives me a creep.
Asylum and paranormal manifestations are one of my favorite combinations and I wasn't disappointed! Are the previous books good? Absolutely! But this one is absolutely phenomenal!
The setting itself is frightening. Walking through an abandoned mental asylum will send shivers down the back of your neck. Now imagine walking through an asylum that looks abandoned but really isn't...
Brilliant. Definitely picked up the pace from the last book and loved that it was set at the Trans-Allegheny Asylum. After seeing that building explored in all my favourite ghost investigation shows, I could actually somewhat picture where the events of the book take place, which added a whole new dimension to my reading experience. Itching to see what lies ahead for Sarah Pearson...onto the next installment!
This is the 6th book in this series and I'm not sure if it was just me not being in the right mood, or if I'm losing interest after so many, but I didn't feel invested in it until about halfway through. It's still a good horror, but I preferred the earlier books. Once again there's a dramatic cliffhanger to ensure you read the next one.
I started reading the last book of the series, but still managed to understand the purpose of Sarah. However I think this will be better read than listened too. The audio version is full of shouting from father Lukas and Sarah. All high pitched voices and it was grueling to listen to. So I will never get the rest of the audio book for this.
This was a fantastic horror story!! Definitely had an edge of your seat story line with some real scary characters. A cliffhanger ending that I'm hoping will be resolved in an upcoming book that will be out soon. Now I'll be very impatient until the next book in the series is available!
