Darkest Before the Dawn
By Michael Anderle
This series is nothing like any of the other books I've read by Anderle. Sure, lots of action, great characters, fun fantasy, but part of the time, this feels like a glorified comic!
One minute I'm thinking this is just too goofy, and the next, I'm giggling. I guess I'm just as crazy as the authors. So, the humor is scattered generously and sometimes a bit dark but funny regardless.

Keeps getting better

So, the return of Michael continues. He deals with the Duke. They start looking for the sacred clans protected parcels as these will help with building a ship. They need to follow Bethany Anne. They need the sacred clans technology. It's fast. It's fun and Michael's hair is starting to grow back. Enjoy!

It's a fairly good story with good action. It was nice to see Michael own a bit of stupidity, too.

It's a bit comical to me that I've been saying since I started The Second Dark Ages that Anderle writes male MCs better than female. At the end of this book I listened to the author notes for the first time and realized that a female author, Ell Leigh Clarke, had a hand in writing this series. She's listed here as a narrator but she's a co-author. That might explain things a bit.

I'm enjoying this series, but it's superficial fun stuff at best, with a fair amount of fan-service.

Chris Abernathy's narration is excellent and I had no moments when the voices pulled me from immersion. He's a voice actor, and I'll be looking for more of his work.

Ongoing issue with how the author’s female character’s characterizations. I thought I solved this issue by quitting the female MC based series Kutherian Gambit & switching to this male MC based series. No such luck the author continues every negative female stereotype with his secondary female characters in this series. It’s a shame bc I do enjoy the world & find it makes for an entertaining series(s). That said I would’ve likely quit 5 books into the Kathurian Gambit series & would’ve never attempted this series if the kindle versions were not available for free on Kindle Unlimited.

I’m unlikely to read any of this authors future work.

I gave the first two books a four star review. Knocked this one down a tad as it felt a bit "same old, same old". The plot and movement were there but I got a tad bored with the characters and dialogue. (I did read each of the 3 three days in a row). I'll give myself a break before picking up any others in the series. 3 is "I like it" so may continue later in spring or summer.

Another stinker.

Every character is the same. It's like they've been lifted from an 80's action film.

1) We don't need the multiple perspectives, especially the lead villain's. It would have been far better to leave his perspective out and draw out the ending sequence. It sucked away all the suspense.

2) The scene with the little boy didn't need to be there at all. I know it was tying up a loose end from the previous book, but it just didn't fit.

3) So nearly everyone knows about the "Unknown World" now? Huh? Michael was gone for more than a century, the world ended, and yet there's people that know all about him when he was never all that well known. He stayed enigmatic on purpose.

4) Akio's personality change didn't make any sense. Especially when he had been around Michael for all of a couple of days. The same goes with Yuko.

5) And my biggest problem: Michael STILL doesn't have an adversary that can come close to hurting him, let alone killing him. He's virtually a god -- and it's BORING.

I think I'm done with this series. The books keep getting worse and it's obvious Mr. Anderle is about quantity over quality.

Talk about my mind being blown!

Every book I've read from these multiple series, that make up the Kurtherian Universe, has me finishings each one, thinking that it just couldn't get any better - and then it does!

Reading something written by two people at the same time, you'd think that there would be the odd gap in the story line, or logic, or something - but there isn't!

To me, this spells of a wonderful storyline, great characters, and of authors who don't let personal ego overcome a good story - one which is written for fans who have fallen in love with said Universe, and appreciate a good story, well told.

Hats off to Michael and Ellie, for writing such a superb book, with believable events, and characters that I cheerfully love, or hate, depending on their stance of what's honourable, or not.

BTW, one thing I've taken away from each book, and it went double with this one, is the humour.

I met, and married within three months, a man so full of this kind of humour, that he was irresistible to me, so to read that same kind of madcap humour, and be able to belly laugh again, four years after losing him, is a true gift.

I guess, too, that the relationships within each book, and series, is another thing that I love about them.

Whenever there is a partnership, it's one of equals, without pettiness, and real, nasty, jealousy, but they also have a sense of true respect, in any disagreements - and in a world that dramatises disagreements, just for effect, I find this wonderfully refreshing to read.

All this said, this particular book, number three in the series, had me hooked from the first word, until I'd finished reading the last of the authors' notes - as usual - and you can't get better than that, in my mind!

I just looked at my reading list, and it seems I'll be hopping back over to the THW series again, reading: Nomad's Galaxy, before getting back again to this series.

I'm hoping this means that we are closer to getting all our heroes into space, to meet up with Bethany Anne again but, if not, I'll just keep on enjoying this wild roller-coaster ride, until the end!

The Author Notes clarified why the females (Jacqueline, Sabine) got unbearable.

I don't mind sassy females; I dislike when they seem like they're suffering pre-cycle-syndrome every 24-hours! Jacqueline talks too much, and became annoying, unbearable, overly possessive, and sooo immature (where Mark and lacking word-vomit filtering was concerned). Sabine started out a little feisty, but reasonable, tough and teachable. She turned into Jacqueline Jr. when she got upset about things. And, why shouldn't their irritating predilections and immature moments not be pointed out, when they're so quick to point out when they (irrationally, most times) are bothered by something innocently said or done by Mark, Michael or other males. It's hypocritical, and one of the things that bothered me about Tabitha, Cheryl Lynne, Ecaterina, and Gabrielle. Bethany Anne had a wealth of maturity given her youth -I totally loved her spirit, snark, and high horse attitude, because she owned it, her mistakes, and shortcomings, besides the fact she delivered on keeping up with as well as tuning up men double her size and weight! When the females are so outclassed in experience, skills, and maturity, they need to translate their behavior into more respectful displays. I ended skipping pages of dialogue, sometimes action scenes, to avoid the picture or enactments of brattiness or shortness toward on or more men. I got through this book in just over an hour.

Obviously, I kept reading because of Michael; Akio became familiar and a little adorable, a lot more admirable, the further their story progressed. All in all, great story in spite of my irritation at certain inconsistent personalities. Four stars, because the writing is undeniably brilliant beyond my disagreement about female characters' idiosyncrasies. *sigh* 🌟🌟🌟🌟

3.5 Most Priceless Objects Destroyed In A Single Afternoon Stars

Darkest Before The Dawn is the third book in The Second Dark Ages series by Michael Anderle.

I guess the issue I have with these works is simply that I had such high expectations for when Michael came back on the scene. That nothing I’ve seen yet has truly compared. Bethany Anne was capable of ruling their story alone. All evidence thus far has shone Michael not to be. Even though they are two parts of a whole, I don’t think he can truly be emphasized without her as a contrast to balance the story.

I hope to see Hirano join Yuko in space. With Jan hopefully joining the team as well. Someone needs to make fashionable for them in space.

Now is the time to face the annoying four men who are also fighting to reach Sacred Clan’s hidden spaceship, reconstruct it, and meet the stars. But I don’t believe they’re strong enough to get between this universes great love.

Also, I take back anything good I’ve ever thought or said about Jacqueline. She annoys me 100% of the time. With her ridiculous, and constant, jealousy issues. No one wants your man sweetheart. Shut up already. Also, Anderle is touting his “women are only illogical” ideology again. Ya need to chill.

Different from the others

I like the writing style from Michael but I could tell something was bothering me on how he was portraying a specific character and I don't know if it was because he contributed with another author that this happened.
SPOILER
I do not like how ridiculous and childishly jealous Jacqueline is with Mark! Like come on, control freak much?? And I am sorry but Ecaterina is the same with Nathan but she never comes thru like a whiney little baby like she is... I am sorry, Mark hasn't even done anything and she is like treating him like he cheated or flirted with someone. She is jealous of technology... Seriously all guys nowadays have sports, tech, cars or something and we are not whiney little girls... Sorry Michael with all due respect, I did not like how you are making an obvious Pricolici (aka badass) come thru. Mark is the sweetest and patient saint of a man.

Still hooked, I can't stop reading these books.

I enjoyed the mind meld of Ell Leigh Clarke and Michael Anderle 's Michael Nacht spin-off, ahem, The Darkness Before Dawn, The Second Dark Ages Series. Book three was packed full of relationship faux pas, mistrust due to past hurts, confidence building, budding love, vengeance, catastrophe, villain monologues and finally politics. A hard to put down Kindle Unlimited book. I'm not patiently waiting for Book four. I'll have to find another Kutherian tale to get my fix.

I wonder if Michael Anderle secretly planned to addict us to his characters in the Kutherian Universe, so that we will wander off to read all the other spin off series that he co authored with five or six writers while we wait for him to bust out the last Bethany Anne and Michael books in February 2018.

Love this book!!

Michael is one of my favorite characters. He kicks ass and doesn't take names because he does not care. He does find himself in some sticky wickets as a result. Michael A. and Elleigh Clark have done a brilliant collaboration in this book, making characters believable and human with all those traits that make us who we are. The story line picks up and flows with other KG stories so those who have been reading along find cohesion, while those new to the universe have a good read. Looking forward to more from this group of writers. Thank you Michael for the amazingly talented writers you have pulled together. Awesome!!!!

Anderle/darkest before the dawn

The 3rd series was not a disappointment I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the story of michael, the dark messiah. This story is where the duke another vampire that was mistakenly resurrected in first series, planning on getting rid of michael once and for all , but plans have a way of changing. With trying to get back to Bethany , michaels love, he and his team has to go through a lot of challenges together . You will enjoy all three series, after you get passed series one , back and forth between dialogue, the first series was a hard read until you get into the why and who's of the story. After that very well written.

We need this buddy movie!

Michael and Akio need their own buddy movie! The two of them get into trouble, joking the whole time. Spoiler: Akio may crack a smile! They are hot on the trail of William, the Duke, and destruction is their main method of searching for him. They pick up another buddy along the way and antics ensue! Meanwhile, Yuko, Mark, Jacqueline and Eve are sent on their own mission. They are after something the Sacred Clan hid and their adventure, though not nearly as bloody Michael and Akios' has many great moments. Michael is learning what it is like to have a team and that he can rely at on them, apparently you can teach an old vampire new tricks!

Michael

This KU library selection is a combination of excitement and boredom, with excitement winning out toward the end. As with the KG series, the story moves along in two or more separate yet related tracks, which is sometimes confusing with new characters or characters with the same given names. On the plus side, the collaboration between the two authors is virtually seamless. Michael and his team follow William's trail in Europe while Eve and company go after the pieces of the Kutherian spacecraft hidden decades earlier in China. Both will face unforseen hazards on their way to reuniting Michael with Bethany Anne. Book four is up next.

Hair Hair Now

Michael the ultimate badass bald vampire cowboy is back in action dispensing justice to evil doers. He and his friends kick bad guy butt with impunity until his own arrogance puts him in the Duke's trap. He comes to realize that it is very handy to have friends around to help pull his bacon out of the fire, so that he can complete his vow to Bethany Anne. I like the humor, snarky dialogue, the well written characters, and good kicking evil butt. I look forward to another book.

OK, OK, OK, I agree with every 5 star review (whether I've read them or not)! I love that your writing about the big M again. I'm liking the softer side of Michael ... but will BA when she comes back. Not to mention M's idea of going to look for her, himself, when they find all the "alien tech and ship parts". But I'm not sure how that's going to work. Are they going to just miss each other (to make all your readers insane with the waiting and forehead slapping)? I'm still highly entertained by the author's notes at the end of each book.

Awesome!

Holy crap! I thought Bethany Anne got herself into some pickles? Michael is no slouch! I very much like the ebb and flow of this one, Michael, Akio, and Sabine in Europe looking for William while Mark, Jacquline, Yuko, and Eve plus a few friends are in Japan trying to find the other Kurtherian ship the Sacred Clan hid all those many long years ago.
That scene with Michael almost losing his atoms again? Let’s just say it made my eyeballs get really big! I’m glad that got worked out. Phew!
Now, off to find that stupid ship!

The Wait is Over

So, Michael, finally finished the 3rd book about Michael and since I have been waiting (it seems like forever) for it to finally be released, I read it in one day! Now, the only problem with this is, now I have to wait, again, for the next one! Every book from Michael and Ell, are some of the best, ever! I highly recommend these books, especially if you have a whole day to do nothing but read because they are THAT hard to put sdown.

Another excellent story with some interesting locations

Wow! Michael went through a LOT in this story. Obviously, there a lot of fights and some points were he is 'done playing'. Lol

It was also nice to read about the relationships developing and I think the collaboration worked great!

I now need to get back to the main story arc; I don't want to read book 4 of this series until I'm caught up in the other!

I found this one annoying. It has some huge plot holes and on the whole is badly written. I've enjoyed the series so far but this book let's the rest down. Almost as bad as the plot holes is how predictable the storyline is.

What's with the destroying of art? Particularly in a world that's had so much destruction already. Bad form and out of character for good guys to mindlessly destroy priceless artwork.

Gut churning action!!

Michael Anderle certainly doesn’t disappoint with this book, lots of action, near death experiences and loads of laugh out loud moments. If only my imagination was as half as good as Anderle’s, I would die a happy person. The way he makes the reader see in their mind the characters and storyline is just amazing.
Now to download the final book in this collection and get me a HEA with Michael and Bethany Ann.

Excellent, exciting, and so good!

Once again this series, and I'm talking about the books dating back to the first "Kurtherian Gambit" book, makes me very happy that I can read! Great story, characters, action, and you never know what is going to happen next. When you start, keep your reading list handy so you know what to read next, including stories that link other characters outside of the "stars" of the main series. Have fun!

One of the best!

Particularly well put together and reaching toward “literature”. Good continuity and action. A little sweet romance, lots of destruction. Don’t you think “Finis” is a little pretentious? This a great series or I wouldn’t be gobbling them up, but even Hemingway or Steinbeck were ok with blank space at the “end.”

I have read these wonderfully fun books. It seems to me that Michael Anderle has solved the problem with "Superman". He did not leave his characters weak, but they are not totally indestructible. He keeps the action and problems moving at a quick pace while allowing for a fun read. I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of these books and look forward to the next.

Fantastic

Even though all of TKG universe has been enjoyable, the return of Michael is my favorite outside of the original story arc. This installment is not different. There is a good amount of humor, adventure, horrible people who eventually get theirs, and just a really well told story. Highly recommend.

A new hat!

I loved this book! I think the two writers worked so well bringing the story together you can't tell each wrote a part. Well done. I enjoyed the closeness of characters had in the end.
The best part though was the ending! I won't ruin it for the readers. On to the next book!
