For a short story, "Hunger & Cursed Shadow," covers a lot of bases. It is meant as a bridge gap between two of the author's other series, "Primordials of Shadowthorne" and "Blood & Magic Eternal." I have read neither (yet, at the time of writing this review) and was quickly able to discern generally what had happened in the previous series, get a feel for the personalities of the characters, and understand what the following series would be about. Gave a good example of the authors writting style, switched pov, mixture of thoughts and dialogue, with embellishments to actions that gave the story a serious, and harrrowing feel. While it is not a completely enclosed story, it presents a problem, escalated the problem, and set up motivation. Where it ended.. I hope to see the wrath of Halira bring fury to those who deserve it. Her love and kindness boost the same in kind. It did well at motivating me to want to read more.

The only reason I am not giving a full five stars is there were more characters introduced that were unnecessary to this particular tale. They felt out of place.
