I never wanted to be the catch of the season. Not anymore. But when you’re a wealthy widow who presents a challenge for all the fortune hunters in London, it’s difficult to stay out of the spotlight.
Miles Griffin has returned to London. Before he can find his footing in Mayfair, he’s made an unexpected enemy of me. But something happens when we battle across the ballroom. Our passions flare, and I burn like I never have before.
I’m determined to avoid marriage, but perhaps an arrangement with the handsome earl is not out of the question.
Just when the future seems brightest, secrets and surprises threaten everything we’ve built. Miles must make a choice between the man he was and the man he wants to be. And I need to decide if I’m willing to risk more than just my heart for a second chance at happiness.
Book #2 in the Bartholomew series follows the enemies-to-lovers romance between two lonely hearts desperate for a change. Second Chance Dance is a full length historical romance filled with charm and wit, and a guaranteed happily ever after.
Laney Hatcher is a firm believer that there is a spreadsheet for every occasion and pie is always the answer. She is an author of stories both old and new where the HEAs are always guaranteed. Often too practical for her own good, Laney enjoys her life in the southern United States with her husband, children, and incredibly entitled cat.
Laney Hatcher is becoming one of my favorite historical romance authors. First to Fall, the first book in this series, was my first to read of hers and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Second Chance Dance is the, you guessed it, second book in the Bartholomew Series, this time with the sister of Emery (from First to Fall), Patty.
Patty’s husband died years ago, leaving her with a fortune. It had been a loveless marriage, with Patty essentially being used to produce an heir. She was young and it took her away from her family.
She’s conflicted. She doesn’t want to be lonely, but she can’t trust anyone who won’t just use her for her money and title.
Miles is the perfect solution. His father sent him away to France 6 years ago because he was having an affair with an opera singer. He doesn’t know who she is, when they first meet, so he seems genuine in his affection towards her, and Patty likes him and wants him, but still doesn’t know if she can trust him.
Her previous husband left a bad impression of marriage on her and doesn’t want that again, so she comes up with an arrangement of the FWB kind. Miles will take what he can get because he’s smitten and let’s just say he knows his way around a four-poster bed.
I’m absolutely loving this series. The writing is clever. It’s funny (Mary is a hoot!), has plenty of banter, it’s swoony, and it’s sexy. I can’t wait to see what Laney has in store for Genevieve in book #3, Third Degree Yearn.
I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book.
Kindle Unlimited: [X]YES [ ]NO Stand-alone: [X]YES [ ]NO Author: Laney Hatcher Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Spiciness rating: 🌶🌶/5 POV: Dual, first person Main Couple: Patty & Miles Genre: Historical Romance Tropes: enemies to lovers; opposites attract; slow-burn; no strings attached relationship
Review:
“I thought I’d be angry and lonely forever. And then you…”
“And then I tricked you into a dance, two of them. And the rest is history.”
We had already met Patty in the previous book in the series, and she was this young, but austere widow who didn’t want to marry again. Then, during an event she meets Miles, a charming earl who had just came back to London after some years exiled in France.
Patty decided right away she didn’t like Miles and his alluring ways, he, on the other hand, was enchanted by her. Throughout the book we learn there was more for both of them than first met the eyes. I loved Miles character since his first line. Patty was harder to like, but both characters were delightful. Not only them, but also their friends and family. It makes me want to know more about each and every one.
Laney’s writing is comforting to me. It’s pleasurable how she brings life to the page and I love her historical romances, even not being a big fan of the style.
*** I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. ***
‘“Emery,” I hissed in exasperation. “Good lord, you need a bell or louder underskirts.”’
I loved the first book in this series, and I really loved the second. Patty is an understandably complicated character, trying to reconcile the loss of the girl she used to be with who she wants to become, all while maintaining a frosty, armoured outer shell in the face of the gossipy, judgemental ton. Miles knows a bit about character development from his own, necessary experience, and the interactions and slowly burgeoning relationship between them is a delight. Their banter especially made me smile - in fact, all the dialogue is extremely well done (see above quote). It’s a sign of a good series when you’re not only actively happy to see the return of previous characters, but you also really want all the unattached side characters to get their own stories. No pressure, but I’m definitely here for that.
This book is the Empire Strikes Back of second-in-a-series books….the first book was awesome, but the second book knocks it out of the park!!! I had several “butterfly belly” moments throughout the journey of Miles thawing the Ice Queen, Patty. This book was everything swoony and scandalous that you’d hope for in a historical romance. My only problem is now having to wait until book 3!!! (That epilogue tho….🫢)
I think I may have enjoyed this even more than book one. Lahey Hatcher is wonderful at writing characters and their emotions. Patty and Miles had an entertaining book that had a few twists and turns along the way. A few unanswered questions that I have, but maybe they will be in the next book.
Can someone tell me if Daly gets his own book? I need him to have one.
I received an ARC from the author today. Oh how I loved this book. It was so wonderful to see these two characters get together. I am truly enjoying this family and can not wait for book 3 in this series.
Once again, Laney Hatcher has left me in awe of how she beautifully writes the perfect mix of emotions and laughs! I just love this world she has created with the Bartholomew siblings and their clear love and support of each other!
Patty and Miles are both such lovable characters. Patty is cold on the outside but as a reader we see how much she cares for others and can understand why she protects herself the way she does. Miles is the perfect match for her with his charming sense of humor and the way he is all in with her from the first time they run into each other, even when he knows she might never feel the same. He is an all around good guy and I just love how hard he loves!
Augie and Emery (Patty’s sister) from the first book are two of my favorite characters ever, so I appreciated all the little peaks of them throughout the book. If you haven’t read that book yet, a) make sure you do and b) you don’t have to in order to read this one. This book comes with a beautiful epilogue that wraps everything up so nicely but also leaves you wondering what’s next for the next Bartholomew sibling!
Laney has turned me…lol…I was not a historical romance reader before I read her contribution to SPR - Neanderthal Seeks Dutchess. Since then I have read every books she’s released and anxiously await her next books.
She creates the most amazing, sassy, confident and passionate characters.
Patty is a widow who comes across a bit cold and keeps her distance (as you read you will find out why). However, with the introduction to Miles her facade begins to crack and her true self comes to live …she’s an lovely woman.
Miles is a charismatic, swoony and has met his match with Patty. The push and pull between the two is fantastically written by Laney.
And the epilogue is amazing….now we have to wait for book 3. :)
Troupes- Enemies to lovers, he falls first, found family, sex lessons…
CW- just your normal historical misogyny from the hero’s father and her late husband.
Laney Hatcher has quickly become my favorite historical romance Novelist. And not just because she lets me read her books early. Her story telling voice is on par with Penny Reid and Lisa Kleypas mixed together and for me that’s like the best hit of serotonin I could ask for. This the second in her self published Bartholomew family series was a resounding hit for me. I loved everything about is from Patty’s ice queen public persona, to Miles and his reformed playboy ways, to the take down of the antagonist at the end, which once you read you will be cheering for too! It’s sweet and steamy with just touch on spice but lots of heated looks and I enjoyed every single moment.
I could go on and on but honestly just go preorder it. If you love historical regency romance, ice queen heroines with a soft gooey center and reformed rakes with hearts of gold then this is a romance for you!
Laney Hatcher has solidified herself as my favorite voice for Historical Romance. Second Chance Dance has everything I love about a great enemies to lovers storyline with the added plus of communication between two mature adults and a wonderfully romantic HEA. Plus, so much fantastic humor that I caught myself snorting as I came across each of the hilarious quips.
I adore how Laney Hatcher crafts her novels. Second chances aren’t just for the two main characters and that adds to the beautiful complexity for both families of Patty and Miles.
Whew. This story was a roller coaster of emotions! There were intense and maddening moments, moments I laughed out loud, and others that made me want to cry. Patty and Miles had a lot of obstacles, emotional damage, and their own stubbornness to get past, but that happily ever after was absolutely beautiful.
Laney does a fantastic job with historical romance. I have loved this series. This is a story about second chances. I loved how Patty and Miles just seemed so drawn to each other. But Patty is of course not necessarily ready to jump back into marriage. Which is understandable. I loved getting more from Emery and the other characters. This book perfectly sets up the next book. I can’t wait.
I enjoyed the first book in this series, but I fell in love with the second. This was such a compelling story that I could not put it down.
This was a fun Taming of the Shrew type romance where Patty really makes Miles work for her heart, because Patty has been married before and does not see what all the hype is about. But through careful consideration, Patty does admit her attraction. And my favorite parts were where Miles was patient with a skittish Patty as he taught her the pleasures that could be had between two consenting adults. Sweet and spicy at the same time!
The little twist at the end was a great way to tie the whole story together. And the epilogue has whetted my appetite for the next book for sure. Loved it!
4.5⭐️ This was a truly feminist romance about a woman finally learning to be comfortable with her sexuality and being unafraid to voice what she wants.
It has a cinnamon roll hero who fluently speaks sarcasm and innuendo but says the most perfect things to the woman he’s falling in love with.

As the title aptly indicates, this is a story all about second chances - though it is not a second chance romance. Patty and Miles do not have a history together prior to page one. So readers leery of second chance romance, have no fear. It’s hard to resist cheering for Patty and Miles as they each rebuild their lives and take a shot at love.
Roguish Miles is getting a fresh start and second chance after being banished by his father to France for the past several years. Upon his return to England, it doesn’t take him long to fall (and fall hard) for Patty. He just needs her to give him a chance, and then maybe a second chance.
The frosty duchess, Patty, finds a second chance at her own ever after, this time with “happily” thrown in. She’s rebuilding relationships with her family. She’s claiming her joy!
Author Laney Hatcher has a unique voice among historical romance authors as she writes in first person dual perspective. Reading her work may take a bit of adjustment for readers used to the more traditional third person omniscient point of view. However, Hatcher’s style provides an easy adjustment for readers of contemporary romance.
* Potential spoiler ahead *
Is there a word for the opposite of content warning? Like a heads-up: this book is a safe space for people with the same triggers as me.
It’s hard to write an entirely spoiler-free review for this one while fully expressing my feelings. Here’s why: there is a specific element that often worms it’s way into stories featuring characters with infertility. As someone who has dealt with pregnancy loss and infertility for years, it always bothers me. I find it harmful. I was overjoyed that Hatcher did NOT include that element anywhere in Patty and Miles’s story. Instead, Hatcher shows that families come in all forms and fashions.
Second Chance Dance by Laney Hatcher is the second book of The Bartholomew Series and how fitting the title is!
Patricia is a wealthy widow who has to deal with the fortune hunters in London. Annoyed of them all she never wanted to marry again... until the handsome Miles Griffin danced with her one time... but then misunderstandings lead to a different path...
Awwwww! I loooove this family and would love to be part of it as well! I enjoyed First to Fall so much that I was sooo excited for another book in this series! Patty is Emery's older sister and has to deal with the life of a widow. Every man in London seems to be interested... but are they interested in her personality or just her wealth? I fell in love with her personality right from the beginning! An inspiring young woman who isn't afraid to deal with the annoying men! Awwww and when she meets Miles?! 😍 PURE PERFECTION! OMG all those sparks when they danced together for the first time! 🥰❤️ *SWOON ALERT* And Miles Griffin! With his longer hair and captivating eyes?! Who wouldn't fall in love with him right from the start?! I definitely did! Well... I absolutely devoured every moment of their story! An enemies-to-lovers romance of two strong characters! WONDERFUL! ❤️ You'll definitely love it as well! Trust me! I laughed and swooned and felt with them along their way. Can't wait for more of this family!
Thank you so much to Laney Hatcher for this ARC. This is my honest review in my own words.
Oh how I love Patty and Miles! This Regency series will draw you in with its romance, wit and humour! Laney Hatcher’s writing keeps you turning the pages and if you are after an enemies to lovers historical romance with a grumpy FMC this book is for you! Just look at the cover 😍
Patty is a wealthy widow, a Duchess who appears to be the catch of the season, whether she wants to be or not! This in turn has many who want to be her suitor, however Patty has eyes for no man, until Miles Griffin returns to London. Miles has his own past to deal with, yet he is immensely drawn to Patty with their banter and her non-interest, all which makes for a delightful and romantic read that had me smiling all the way through!
Recommended to all romance readers out there! Second Chance Dance is out now through Amazon and Kindle Unlimited 💙
I said it for book one and I will say it again, I love Laney’s writing with HR. It's very modern, fresh, and new. The ending of this one I didn’t see coming and fell in love with not only the characters but the author because of it! Miles is getting a second chance of life back in London after his horrible father ships him off to France, so he is trying to come back into his new normal. He runs into Patty at a party and dances with her, little did he know she was the Ice Queen everyone wanted to marry. Patty is getting a second chance to not only be herself again but be happy. They two hit it off, but fall out of grace - cycles for a bit - have some great banter/chemistry along the way but some major learning for these two! If you love when the male lead falls first and hard- Miles will do it for ya!
The Bartholowmew family I would like to join, we have wonderful side characters with this one and I can’t wait for more of this series!
Book two in the Bartholomew series. Can be read and enjoyed as stand-alone, but book one is so good I highly recommend reading it first. Each book is about a different Bartholomew sibling with secondary characters the same throughout the series. Full length told in dual POV with HEA. Miles and Patty have a lot of push and pull in their slow burn road to HEA. I am loving this series!
Laney Hatcher's series have been a delightful surprise for this non-historical romance reader. I was hooked after Neanderthal Seeks Duchess (London Ladies Embroidery, #1) and charmed by First to Fall (Bartholomew, #1). If Laney Hatcher is writing it, I'm reading it!
"My heart had chosen you before I even realized it."
I adore Patty and Miles's slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance. The chance they take on each other and on love is swoony, charming, witty, and so full of heart. With surprises, family re-connections, wonderful side-characters, and a wonderful yet teasing epilogue that will delight readers and leave them eager for more.
I'm ecstatically awaiting Genevieve and Julian's story, Third Degree Yarn!
What an incredibly delightful book. The frosty, widowed Dutchess charmed by the reformed Rake who disgraced his family. It's all so good, I kept hearing Taylor Swift singing "oh no, I'm falling on love" on repeat in my head, the pining was so good and the feelings so subtle at first. I adore this world and all of these characters, and the last page of the epilogue has me dying for Third Degree Yearn. Laney Hatcher has written 4 entire, amazing books this year. Read them all, I promise you'll be swept away.
This was a hard to put down read - I wasn't 100% sure how the ending would get where it needed to (because I had made an incorrect prediction earlier in the book), but I enjoyed Patty and Miles and them navigating their relationship as it changed and grew. This is definitely a historical romance that reads a little more contemporary, while still feeling believable. I think it's because Lahey Hatcher does a great job of creating strong female leads despite what society of their era might throw their way. Definitely looking forward to the next book.
I have fallen even more in love with this Bartholowmew family. I cannot wait until the next book, it was set up so well!
Miles has officially become a book-boyfriend, he is so gone for Patty, and I absolutely love it. The author completely took me by surprise with her little twist in this book, it was perfection, I didn’t even see it coming.
I really enjoyed this book, and highly recommend this series!
You will love this enemies to lover regency romance! I am loving Laney Hatcher’s books and this is no exception. She continues to impress me with her characters, ease of reading and fun spins on favorite tropes. You will have fun with Patty and Miles! Regency enemies to lovers banter is so fun:):)
I really enjoyed reading this book! What a fun journey getting know Patty (it made me want to reread First to Fall, to see her again through Emery’s eyes) and Miles.
Laney is a skilled author who has created a delightful world in her Bartholomew family novels. Can’t wait for the next one! 💗
I enjoyed the book. It kept me interested the entire time. Miles and Patty were a bit different from the usual characters and the family dynamics added to the story.
I tend to think I don't like historical romance and then I read amazing books like Second Chance Dance by Laney Hatcher and I question all my life choices because this book is amazing. I love the banter, the steam, the scandal, and the things the hero says... I mean I think he takes the book boyfriend award this year and I'm here for everything Miles has to say.
"Patricia Henney was loveliness personified..."
The author drew me in from the first chapter and created such an engaging story that I could not put it down. I loved seeing Miles fumble his way through his return to London society and Patty's walls slowly come down after being so tough for so long. These two were all chemistry and fire and I loved it even when they were fighting.
This book has something for everyone including
Enemies to lovers secret dating slow burn excellent heat swoony pining hero badass independent heroine misunderstandings banter for days and days a trip to the country men in a boxing ring! redemption scandal! did I mention the steam was on point?!
Seriously, I could go on but I'm trying not to spoil the book. Highly recommend to anyone who loves romance. If you think you aren't a historical reader... this book will change your mind.
Thank you Laney for giving the reader an epilogue to remember! I already marked my calendar for the book 3 release date on July 27th!
