A dead college kid left in the center of a baseball field. A disturbing note that could mean there is a serial killer on the loose. And an exhausted cop’s ever-growing fear that he is somehow a clue in the case.
Cory Van Doren is still reeling after waking up on his living room floor with twenty-four hours missing from his memory. When his partner calls him out to investigate a homicide, Cory’s world is flipped upside down.
Can Cory maintain his impossibly high standards even though he feels like he could break at any moment? Was he really at the same nightclub where the victim was last seen? And why does every layer he pulls back seem to reveal more and more rotten flesh?
With his fears and memories becoming harder to ignore, Cory finds himself entangled in the most challenging case of his life. As the walls close in around him, he must try to separate his nightmares from reality, although they are starting to feel like one and the same.
Will he solve the murder case before another innocent person dies? What if his involvement is more sinister than he first fears? And how can a man keep a level head when everything around him becomes twisted beyond recognition?
My review is pretty much the same for this book as the first 2 in the series. I feel the need to write more books might be the reason for third person writing and cliffhangers. Third person creates a lot of description and tell what someone is thinking, feeling and seeing, it fills up space. The substance is lacking, a lot of thinking of the past, not much new goimg on. In this series the books are relatively short, which could be a good thing if you want to read lots of books. I just feel like the cliffhangers make me want to read the next book and then I feel like I'm wasting time. I think this series could have been maybe one book shorter with each book being a little longer to really suck me in. The story is good, so far, but not really exciting, that's what I'm missing, excitment, the feeling that I really care about tne people and what's happening. I really don't care. I'm going to read book 3 because I already have it but this may be the last one of Charles Elliots that I read.
There was a good-length section in which the author allows the reader a glimpse into Cory’s processing of the day’s crime find. It was so realistic the way his thoughts flowed around his mundane actions. A short break in the action and intrusive thoughts of his past – pretty calming, in fact. A nice touch.
I can’t imagine what it’s like to be a detective: “…It’s the stuff we bring home with us that really gets us in the end.” Bradley tapped his temple. “You gotta keep this thing safe as best you can.”
The story picks up where the previous part ended. Corey investigates the murder of a man he's had a fight with. The man was killed so horribly and the note that was left suggests that they are on the trail of a serial killer. A young woman from CSI thinks the killer was a woman, but Cory suspects not. And as they investigate the case, Cory is haunted by nightmares. But what do those nightmares mean? The book ends with a cliffhanger that really makes you want to read on!.

This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.

After the college kid's death, Cory is faced with trying to find the block of his memory that has disappeared. Between partners, nightmares & images in his mind, he's frantic to figure out why his life seems to be spiraling downward. Looking forward to the next one coming up. I recommend this series, and have enjoyed each one so far.
Love the characters, things are getting tense as Cory continues to battle with his weekend blitz. Confusion comes across strongly and engages you. Loving this series with some seriously in depth writing of emotional conflict.
Charles Elliot has another winning series in Double Deception and this was a great sequel to the Sugar Rush. The story had a great tense atmosphere and I really enjoyed going through this journey.
