John Stuart Mill, English philosopher, political economist, civil servant and Member of Parliament, was an influential liberal thinker of the 19th century. He was an exponent of utilitarianism, an ethical theory developed by Jeremy Bentham, although his conception of it was very different from Bentham's.
Mill’s ’Utilitarianism’ is another text that any ethics student should read. I don’t agree with the Utilitarian philosophy, nor am I a big fan of how Mill writes, but I think it is important to read books that you don’t agree with. I am glad that my ethics professor was able to expound upon certain points that Mill makes. These only help solidify my understanding of this ethical theory, as well as my disagreements with it.
