The Twits Chronicles #1

Twits in Love: A Steampunk Distraction

Rate this book
Alcohol is like the cousin that owes you money. It promises everything and delivers nothing.

Cyril Chippington-Smythe, the world's richest man, awakens from a drunken stupor to find that he may have engaged himself to the horrifyingly toothy Alice Witherspoon. His mechanical manservant, Bentley, concocts a plot to free his master from any possible entanglements, but Alice has more than matrimony on her mind and may destroy civilization as we know it.

“The Twits Chronicles are hilarious, blessed with truly exceptional dialogue. Steampunk dystopia meets Oscar Wildean wit in these books and I found myself laughing out loud on numerous occasions-- not something I often do while reading. The society that Tom Alan Robbins has created is something to behold: high-tech and low-tech collide, and society has split asunder between the have-nots and the have-everythings. The high society types are wonderfully clueless and carefree, but underneath the frivolity of their antics lies an emptiness. There are shades of P.G. Wodehouse in these books, and watching the lead "twit" of the series extricate himself from various situations--many of his own making-- is immensely entertaining. Throw in a clockwork butler and a cast of over-the-top characters and you've got a series that brings some much-needed laughter in our own dystopian times." - Nick Sullivan, author of The Deep Series and Zombie Bigfoot.

"If you’re the sort who reads blurbs before reading the book, stop it. Stop it right now. Read TWITS IN LOVE and have a good time. These days we can all use a bit more of a good time." - John Ostrander, American writer of comic books, including Suicide Squad, Grimjack and Star Wars: Legacy.

Hilarious and inventive

The dialogue in this book is excellent, with some laugh-out-loud zingers. Outlandish characters and some futuristic throwback world-building. Waiting for the next book!

Funny, loved it

I could visualize all the characters in my head so it played like a cartoon as I read. Really funny.

Appalling. There are so many things wrong with this that it's dificult to know where to start.
Perhaps the first thing to note is that it tries too hard. There's a reason that not many successfully imitate the master and that's because he was a genius. This doesn't even work as a parody.
Secondly that in order to be classed as a comedy it has to be funny and this is not remotely funny.

I was pleasantly surprised by Twits in Love. As a debut novella, it was fantastic. I initially picked it up because it was marketed as a steampunk comedy, and it absolutely hit the mark. The dialogue throughout is humorous and witty, keeping the tone delightful and engaging.

The story follows Cyril and his ever-reliable butler, Bentley—a steam-powered automaton. While the novella's primary focus is comedy, it also poses some thought provoking questions: what happens to a society when all major global issues like war and famine have been eradicated? Robbins explores a world where people are free to pursue leisure and pleasure without any pressing demands, but at a cost. Without challenges or a sense of purpose, life becomes a series of routines—frequenting gentlemen’s clubs with ever-changing, arbitrary dress codes or spending weekends in the countryside.

Beneath the humor, there are hints of a bleak reality. The world has been irreparably damaged by a mass extinction event, factory-made food has replaced natural sustenance, the Arctic ice has melted, and acid rain can ruin even the simplest plans. While the characters seem content in their routines, they live in a world diminished by these losses—yet they don't fully grasp what they've been deprived of. It reminded me of some of the themes explored in the movie Idiocracy

Although this is set in a steampunk world, there are strong dystopian undercurrents that remain largely unexplored. I would have loved to see more of these darker themes developed, as they offer a fascinating contrast to the comedy.

Overall, Twits in Love is an entertaining and witty novella with layers of thought-provoking ideas beneath its humorous surface. While I wish it delved deeper into its dystopian aspects, it’s a strong debut, and I am definitely going to continue the rest of the series.

Think P.G. Wodehouse with a steampunk dystopian flare. The main character Cyril Chippington-Smythe is a version of Bertie Wooster: a rather dim-witted aristocrat who gets into trouble. His robot-servant, Bentley is Jeeves through and through, albeit a steam powered version. The plot here more similar to Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest than to anything Wodehouse wrote, so the influence of the two humorists get a chance to do battle, or complement one another, depending on how you look at it.

But the backdrop of this battle is a society where electricity was never discovered, so steam power has compensated, causing society to develop very differently, and not in entirely positive ways. There's been a great extinction that seems to have wiped out most animals, acid rain will ruin weekends, the there's no ice to be found in the Arctic. All of this has resulted in all food being factory produced. At a number of times there characters sit down to meals of Impossible Mutton, cellulose crudites, and newcumber sandwiches. Yum!

I think calling this novella a "distraction" is wise. That's what it is. It's a way to smile amid the insanity of the real world. While it might look different from the insanity of the world in the story, they might be more similar than they seem...

In 'Twits in Love', Tom Alan Robbins doesn't just channel P.G. Wodehouse - he brings Wodehouse into the modern (or post-modern, since this is steampunk) era by lightly addressing such issues as anarchy, terrorism, our haves/have not global economy, and LBGTQ.

Before you put the book back or click away from the Amazon shopping cart, saying to yourself, "Yikes! I don't want to have to deal with those issues. I just want some escapist fun.", let me assure you that Robbins' approach to these issues is not heavy-handed. He doesn't preach, he doesn't shame. He is sly, amusing, wry and wise. At the worst, you might find yourself thinking, "Huh, I never thought of that before."

This is a fun read sprinkled with sparkling writing, surprising metaphors, and smashing similes. I, for one, look forward to reading more about these steampunk twits.

Anything less than 5 stars would be a crime!

Funny, witty, elegant, surprising, dramatic, chaotic, and so exquisitely written! Mr Robbins was able to raise good comedy from the dead with this stellar 6-volume collection. This proves that it is still possible to have comedy that is funny and wholesome, without having to recurr to the cheap and the depraved. Also, the comedy does not work at the expenses of the story but the two compliment each other. The dystopian steampunk British settings are a very welcome bonus. Though the author is from the US, he has created a cast of British characters that are very believable and authentic.
This is the type of content where prose, characters, and story all work together organically to produce a must-read instant classic that can only get from me 5 BIG stars!

This is a tough one. To change media it is like the Blandings TV series rather than the Jeeves and Wooster TV series. It takes the mickey and isn't funny enough in exchange. I've written a book about Wodehouse and tossed in a few Wodehouse inspired bits of writing along with a fair to middling Christmas piece since the master never did much there. It is not easy to get close to Wodehouse, he wrote at both another level and a level reflective of a time and an education that are long gone.

Oddly I think non-Wodehouse fans will enjoy this romp. Funny enough for the young and tragically hip. Folks who have read Wodehouse endlessly will find little here. The rips are too blatent on not even riffs, the rest doesn't come close. Sorry man I know you tried and hey your works sell way better than mine. All the best.

Twits in Love is a delightful blend of steampunk satire and Wildean wit. From the moment Cyril Chippington-Smythe wakes up in a panic over a possible engagement, you know you’re in for a ride. Robbins crafts a world where aristocratic nonsense meets dystopian decay and somehow makes it all feel hilarious and oddly poignant.

The dialogue sparkles, the pacing zips, and Bentley the mechanical manservant, might just be one of my favorite sidekicks in recent memory. Beneath the comedy, there’s a quiet commentary on privilege, purpose, and the strange comforts of routine in a broken world.

If you enjoy P.G. Wodehouse, Oscar Wilde, or just need a break from reality with something clever and theatrical, this novella delivers. I’ll definitely be continuing the series.

By Jove, what an amusing escapade!

A good laugh whilst also being a little thought provoking too, intentional or not?

I like the whole steampunk genre anyway so this appealed to me right away and adding in plenty of satire made it even better.
The writer did a great job, especially considering being American, of depicting an English upper class twit which was very funny.
I must stress though that I hope readers don't think that is the norm because 99% of English people are nothing like that at all and we are proud to be as common as muck!

I enjoyed this a lot though overall and found it very witty (or should that be twitty?).

Have you read any of the PG Wodehouse "Bertie Wooster and Jeeves" stories? Did you like them? If so, imagine them placed in a steampunk world where electricity was not used, where most animals are extinct, and where the distinction between the British classes is at an all-time high. That is the Twits world.
This first book in the series is good although I feel like the story inside is cobbled together from a couple of Wodehouse's books. The primary differences come from the steampunk framing and the frequent mentions of Impossible Mutton, almost meat, tastes-like-coffee, and other food substances of the sort.

A great Steampunk romp!

I went into this first book of the series without any expectations other than the promise of Steampunk, not only was I not disappointed, I was thrilled. The wit and humor alone make it a perfect read on a gloomy day (just dealt with a particularly nasty monster of a hurricane) along with a wonderful cup of tea. The book took Steampunk to new heights in blending the world around it. I plan to acquire and read the rest of the series. (Or at least, read them with Kindle Unlimited)

A pleasant diversion.

Somehow I can't imagine a Victorian gentleman of leisure uttering Americanisms like "gotten" and "pass by". The author also used "forbear" (a verb) instead of "forebears" (noun). These mistakes and others besides would have been avoided if he had splashed out a little more for a British editor instead of an American one (I believe British editors are trained to higher standards). The poor editing is a shame because it only detracts from the enjoyable whole.

Humorous novella in a steampunk world where the wealthy have so much resource that they are at the mercy of arbitrary fashions. It’s narrated entirely by Cyril, who may be a particularly strong example of these limitations. Or maybe not.

The farce was strong with this one. I don’t have a strong sense of humour, and I don’t think I’d have kept reading if the book was much longer, but I’m sure it has wider appeal.

A quick and entertaining steampunk farce

Loved it! Definitely got the P.G. Wodehouse vibes. If this were a movie, I’d say it would sit comfortably in the low PG-13/ high PG spot! The reason it *might* exceed that, and why I knocked off a star, was the random and unnecessary “G—d——“ thrown in. Just a personal pet peeve. Otherwise, I loved it, and I’m excited to read the next book. I was literally laughing out loud on the first page. Quirky, funny, witty. Glad to have this lighthearted read after some heavier stories.

An Amusing Romp

A parody tale that seeks to invoke the spirit of P.G. Warehouse and his creations Jeeves and Wooster channeled thru a steampunk lens in a future both amusing and terrifying in a twisted way.

A comedy of errors and accidents of fortune, it was a nice break from the action adventure or morbid horrors that many streamline author's have done with the genre.

super fun & funny read

This is a delightful little novella. Set in a some what dystopian yet ever so Victorian London with steampunk elements it combines wit & humor in a quick paced adventure. I love the main character- so flawed yet so lovable. I can’t wait to read the rest of the chronicles. Well come Mr. Robbins.

I’ve read P. G. Wodehouse, and I enjoy a little silliness sometimes. But this book was just too much for me. It was like using a chain saw for a nail file. I didn’t enjoy it, so I gave it 2 stars. But to be fair, if you want to be hammered by tongue-in-cheek social commentary and one dimensional characterizations, you’ll probably b like it.

An interesting concept that kept me reading to see what happens. Funny zingers along the way we're occasionally overshadowed by the futuristic setting that it takes place in, thus only 3 stars. I look forward to reading the next book in hopes of more character development.

Okay

The development of characters and the humor throughout the book was well done. However, the storyline felt lacking and once it started was rushed. I'd be happy to read the next if there is a storyline from the start without rushing it at the end.

If you were to create a mixture of Adam Sandler’s early years silliness with an Oscar Wilde-like narrative, you’d get this story. It was hilarious and absurd simultaneously.

This entertaining tale from an alternate, twisted timeline employs characters inspired by PG Wodehouse. I would say the characters need a bit more development, but overall a fun read.
