The Dark Fae of the Lost Land #1

Monster in the Moonlight

Rate this book
A bargain for a soul, a cursed sickness that claims the body, and an immortal monster sent to collect her...

For the past three weeks, a mysterious illness has wreaked havoc in my life, and the doctors can’t figure it out. When a handsome stranger shows up at my farm the day of the fundraiser for my medical bills, I assume he’s here to give a donation. I don’t know why, but I feel connected to the brooding man with pale eyes, dark hair, and full lips shaped in a constant frown.

Being around Ellister makes me forget I’m sick. He looks at me like I’m beautiful, he reminds me what it’s like to want someone so much it hurts, and I find myself wishing we had more time together so I could continue getting to know him.

But the more I learn about him, the more I start to believe his intentions aren’t pure.

Maybe he didn’t come to save me. Maybe he’s here to take everything I have.

And, foolishly, I just might let him.

The Dark Fae's Bargain was a fabulous fae fantasy romance with awesome characters and some really fabulous writing!!! This book had humor and passion and moments of heart breaking dialogue that had me crying a couple of times. Hannah is dealing with a body that is slowly and painfully breaking down from a mysterious disease that leaves the doctors baffled but when a handsome stranger visits the farm not only does he catch her eye but when he's close its like the pain disappears. Ellister is a dark fae on a mission to bring Hannah to his master. Long ago he made a deal with Hannah's grandfather that his first born would be the price for his family getting the farm and for years they were left alone and the bargain with the dark fae coming to get them was just a old man's ramblings. But once Ellister see's Hannah and spends time with her this dark fae will do whatever it takes to save her even if it means kidnapping another woman to take her place. But his master Vaeront only wants Hannah! So Ellister makes a desicion that could leave his mate Hannah not remembering him or their love. The chemistry and banter between this could couple is on point and the build up very hot. This is the first book in this duet but luckily the second book Magic in the will be out in November. I really enjoyed this book and loved Jamie Schlosser's storytelling! Can't wait to read more from this world of dark fae. Until next time Luv's💕💋

I bawled my eyes out with this story, so many emotions and a couple trigger warnings that I think should be mentioned - . Some of these triggers are ones I’m especially sensitive to right now and yet I couldn’t stop reading. Other than the trigger warnings, I tried not to include spoilers.

The book begins with a chapter that seems a bit confusing but makes sense by the end then transitions to the main part of the story. Hannah (h) is sick and no one can figure out why. She has loving parents and a community though that are trying to offer support. Ellister (H) has come to her family farm to fulfill the terms of a Fae bargain made with one of her ancestors. They each feel a pull to the other but she’s fading and he’s not a good guy. Ellister especially is struggling with emotions as he recently gained a conscience on top of what he feels for Hannah (this happened in a prior series but this duet stands alone). Written in first person, dual POV. No om drama, tiny ow drama (former friend of h shows interest in H but not returned, although h is still jealous), neither are virgins but no real details given.

Hannah is so very likable and my heart just hurt for what she was experiencing. Her parents were also wonderful and protective. Ellister is a dark Fae anti-hero, but as we learned more about him, he’s made mistakes and been awful, but now is just as trapped and hurting in the circumstances they find themselves in. He also does try to help, though part of his plan wasn’t exactly the best. I loved the details of how the two characters bonded in small ways, despite me knowing the secrets between them. There’s a small bit of steam, but no full act. What we do get is a whole heck of a lot of feels. Most of this first book was introducing the characters, the problems, and the villain (who’s evil).

The story does end on a cliffhanger but the second part is out soon (thankfully). The last couple of chapters had me very tense and also uncomfortable with where the story might go and how they would be safe. I did like how the last chapter provided some limits on what could be done in the world.

I really enjoyed this! I was scared that it would be triggering for me, but i was able to block out some of the triggering elements without killing the fun and sweet moments that the characters had.

My only critique is that i wish it had actually taken weeks just so they could spend more time together. So much is happening and they focus so much on the farm that i wouldve like to just see them together more just talking or something.

I was worried i wouldnt feel the love because of all that was happening but when they were together it was beautiful and i could definitely feel the schlosser magic.

I cant speak much to the emotional bits because i kinda killed my emotions so as to not panic but i would definitely say this is an emotional read.

Also his use of her full name😍🥰 got me every time.

I look forward to the 2nd book and their HEA

Also side note i totally guessed the set up of the beginning and i feel so proud of myself. The circumstances werent correct but the set up was so pat on the back for me.

Safety & Info:
1st person, dual pov
No 🔥 but they make out and dry hump
◇No OM drama, but H is jealous when h mentions past exs or her fake weddings as a child. Very cute and harmless.
◇OW drama: small, h has an ex friend who shows interest in H he isnt interested in her but the h is very jealous and takes him talking to her and getting her coordinates out of context and the scratches on his hand (which both were actually to help then heroine and were a bit sinister. I like a villain hero😈)
◇No cheating/sharing
◇H 500,000 yrs old, h 25ish
◇neither are virgins, but both celibate for a long time before meeting (h 1 yr ish and H probably thousands of years)
◇no separation
◇cliffhanger ish, story continues in book 2

Oh man! what do I even say about this book?! For starter’s the author really took me for a ride. From start to finish my heart ached but there were also some funny moments that helped lighted the overall mood over the sad moments. Now those sad moments were obvious from the start but as the story progressed, my love for these characters grew and grew. Ellister had me intrigued from when we met him in the Dusk and Dawn books and I was so happy he would get his own book/s. Hannah was great. Even with e thing that she was going though she was funny, sweet, as full of life as she could be, and just an amazing heroine. She saw past Ellister hard exterior and that made me love her more.!

Now these this was different then the Dusk and Dawn series but sooo addictive. I honestly didn’t want it to end. The author honestly hooked me in from the first chapter and I never wanted it to end. Love and loss, struggle and overcoming, life and love….. it was just an amazing read from start to finish. I really can’t wait to dive into part 2. 5 amazing stars. #2OCCJD

(Adding hopefully this review makes sense. I don’t want to give spoilers but this book just made me feel allll the thing and I’m a mess at the moment. Hahahaha)

WHAT A RIDE!

From the very start, I’m immersed in a world that has me clinging to my kindle, flipping the pages and unveiling the magic behind the words.

Hannah and Ellister’s story will grip you in a way that you aren’t prepared for.

The build up to the cliffhanger had me balling my eyes out and I was instantly in need of the rest of the story!

Five stars for this gripping start to an amazing duet that had me wishing it didn’t have to end and excited to find out more in the next part!

What an unique take on a Fae romance!! I devoured this ARC and I cant wait to get my hands on the second and final book.

The first book in the duology follows Hannah, a human who dying from an unknown illness and Ellister, a powerful Fae who is forced to complete bargains for his captor.

I don’t want to give anything away but I will say that this was such a fun and fast read. The cliffhanger will have you wishing for book 2 immediately.

Thank you you Jamie Schlosser for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Maybe I'm just more emotional than usual lately, but whew, this book made me cry. The desperation Ellister had to saveHannah, the way she fought tooth and nail to go with dignity even though she was dying from an unknown illness, and their beautiful captivating love -- it all brought me to tears on numerous occasions. And with this all encompassed in her beautiful and dangerous world of Valora, I knew this would be a winner!

There is so much going on in this book, and I don't want to give away what happens-- especially since it's part one of a duet, but although Ellister is very much an anti-hero for the most part, you feel his heart every step of the way. He trusted the wrong person a long time ago and he's been paying the price ever since, and know he has to cause even more destruction, and he doesn't know how he can do it, especially when he's falling in love with the one woman history keeps ripping away from him. *tears up all over again.*

Hannah is the best of heroines. Brave, smart, wittry, bold, and deeply scared.. she's just everything. She's dealt with a lot of disappointment in life, but she refuses to let her family suffer when she's gone, so she's very much a martyr as well. But oh my, when these two are in the same room, magic literally happens!

The cliffy will make you desperate for the conclusion, but a little Birdie who's already read it (thats me!) can tell you that it's absolutely worth the wait. Go one click this book now!

**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions **

Monster in the Moonlight is one of those books that is better going in blindly, so I'm going to keep this review brief. Hannah is a human dying of an unknown illness & it's moving quickly. Ellister is a fae with strong powers who is beholden to his captor so he's sent to collect her. However, when Ellister meets her, things aren't so cut & dried anymore. This is the second book with a fae hero this week, and again, I'm asking myself why I haven't become obsessed with the fae before now. Hopefully going forward, I'll remember how much I loved this book so a whole new world will be opened to me. The story was very fast paced, which made it easy for me to devour it in very short order & when I came to the cliffhanger (I knew it was a duet but still) ending, I found myself dying inside for the conclusion. So yeah, I LOVED this story, and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Monster In The Moonlight is HOT, MAGICAL DELICIOUSNESS with a storyline that tugs at the heart and a romance that sizzles the blood in your veins! I fell in so much love with this first book in Jamie Schlosser's Moonlight Duet and I can't wait to read the conclusion!

Ellister and Hannah are two incredibly unforgettable characters. The whole reason Ellister is at the farm is anything but innocent but that moment...the VERY moment he meets Hannah, things go askew for him and soon, his feelings for her and his feelings of guilt clash with each other and make things wonderfully, irresistibly more complicated which made this story even more charming and irresistible. I found it nearly impossible to turn away from this book once I started it. I wanted to read continuously and never stop! I never imagined this book was going to go where it went but I am so glad it did. There is so many surprises and twists to this story that sure left me slack jawed. This book was fun, sexy, heartfelt and witty. And its not even over yet! The ending keeps you hanging on the edge and NEEDING to know what happens next. I can't wait for everyone to read this!

This was a super fun read, especially for anyone who read the Between Dawn and Dusk series, and I finished it in 1 night. I liked the FMC a lot, and I'm always a sucker for a good fated mates book with tension & banter. Our MC had me laughing out loud with his cluelessness of humans (the parts with him being terrified of the kittens had me lolling). I also really liked the setting with the whole maple tree farm, as well as the fact that she has parents who actually love her (I'm so over the ~villain parents~ trope that seems to be in every fantasy book these days). It felt totally unique for a fantasy book, which I appreciated. The time travel was cool and something that I don't often see, but I'm hoping the next book goes a little bit more into our MC's magic powers because I wasn't 100% on what his powers fully are. The cliffhanger is tough--I really have no idea where the story is going to go, and I'm excited to read book 2!

The one thing that felt a little off for me was some of the pacing of the book. I felt like the beginning and the first night she met him lasted for like half the book, and then her death at the end felt very abrupt and quick. Otherwise, I thought the book was great. Can't wait to see where the story goes!

This is one of my favorite series, and the reason is because the stories are so beautiful, magical soulmate beautiful. I don’t know about you, but I could use some beauty in my life. So come join me in starting out with book 1 in this 2 part duet…and let the beautiful magic happen and fall in love with two beautiful souls.

Remember the portal master from the Lost Lands, Ellister, you know the one that “borrowed” the girls…so this is the first book of his duets. It started with a bargain, and he is going to collect, but since they were trapped in the Lost Lands, time moved forward, altering the bargain to fit this timeframe. Hannah has a crippling disease that is progressing at a rapid rate, but is such a sweet soul when Ellister meets her. This starts them on their journey, and they will capture your heart.

Safe read, with a beautiful soulmate storyline, and all the heartfelt emotions. With our favorite tiny sassy witch, Astrid, making an appearance. This is book 1 of 2, so definitely stay tuned to read the final book in this love story to see how it all ends. I can’t wait for book 2, because this was definitely a book crack read for me, in an already book crack series. Next book please….

Oh my goodness!! Ellister is definitely on the darker side. He's lived thousands of years without a soul, without a conscience, and that can definitely weigh on a Fae! A trick, a spell, brings back his conscience but not his soul. Still, from the second he comes into contact with Hannah... something begins to shift, and we see glimpses of his heart before...

This is a tough read bc of what Hannah is going thru. My heart broke! It will be mended... but not until the second part comes out! Thankfully, that's releasing fairly quickly! 😉

I loved the story, even with the 💔. These characters are rich, emotional gold!

What a ride. This author always sets up the story so well and with book 1 of this duet, the same can be said. As I finished, I wasn’t sure where our final destination will be, but I’m here for it. This book is a bit of a rollercoaster ride, so strap in!

Oh my god this was epic😍😍 An awesome first part of this duet. We get sucked into the story of Hannah and Ellister. Ellister lived over half a million years in a place he was tossed by a cruel man. He lived in the Lost Land and bargained with humans for their offspring. As part of the fae (the darker side ) this was his punishment for a foolish mistake. His last bargain to pick up was delayed and the curse skipped a generation. Now he needs to take the life of Hannah and as soon as he sees the sickly woman he feels dread and regret. He can't deny his master but he still tries. Ellister fights for his woman and a trick might just save them. Or is everything doomed from the beginning?? Wow I loved this first part it kept me interested and fascinated from the first second to the last page. I devoured this story in one sitting and nothing could grab me away from it 😉 This story made me feel so many many different emotions❤️❤️ Great PNR that ended with a cliffhanger and now I can't wait for the next part 😍😍😍😍😍

In love with Ellister!!

This book officially got me out my slump. For the last three weeks I just couldn’t seem to get into anything at all (first time in a long time ugh) and this book just clicked for me!

I absolutely loved the premise of the story first off. Anything with Fae, dark romance and bargains? Sign me the hell up!

Hannah has had an amazing life so far. She’s young, blessed with an amazing home and, farm and wonderful parents that love her more than anything. Their Maple farm is a legacy that she is so incredibly proud to be apart of and one day maybe take over but, her life takes a drastic turn when she’s struck with a mysterious illness. So mysterious, it’s undiagnosable. We later learn this sickness is magical in nature, that’s where Ellister comes in.

He shows up on their farm one day, totally out of the blue to collect on this bargain. A mysterious Fae indeed, he has to hide why he’s truly there. Years and years ago he struck a bargain with Hannah’s grandpa; that if their farm would thrive, Ellister can collect a life of a future child down the line, that’s where Hannah comes in. This sickness that she’s come down with is in preparation for her death, where Ellister can take her to his “master” in their lost land (where the dark Fae live) and collect her soul. BUT, he didn’t expect to feel remorse and self loathing in his role of her death. Among many other things but, love is the most surprising. He falls head over heels in love with her… and this leads to a surprise that I won’t spoil!

This book ends of a cliffhanger so I’m super excited for part two!! He has to figure out a way to save Hannah’s life so they can be together… will he? We shall see!

Loved this book!

If you like the Dawn and Dust series you will love the The Moonlight Duet! Its a spinoff on one of the bad guys but is he truly bad? Ellister (from the Fae Warriors Princess) has to bargain for his captor. Hannah who is human is dying from an unknown illness. Will Ellister bring Hannah to his boss or will love interrupt and make him whole again? So much details in the stories I'm glad Schlosser split them up into 2 books to give Ellister and Hannah all the love!

pure delight

When Hannah awakens to darkness, she’s alone in a cave with a captor not of this world…until she truly opens her eyes to find it’s all a dream. She’s been having strange ones since her unexplained episodes began. Doctors can’t figure out what’s wrong with her. But a stranger may have all the answers…for a price.

Ellistar’s touch makes the pain disappear, something Hannah realizes the first time they meet. When they touch, it’s like the world is right again. But there’s something odd about the handsome man with the unforgettable eyes. He doesn’t seem to understand simple things like GPSs and social cues. But if he can make her better again, she’ll follow him anywhere.

He’d come to the farm looking for payment on a life returned, only to find the life of a woman seemingly at an end. Things are electric between them, but he knows it’s all an illusion, a pitfall of his kind. She isn’t getting better by his side, only getting drunk on his power. Still, he can’t bring himself to collect on his debt or hurt Hannah.

Can they find a way to be together or will the pull they feel ruin them both?

Sweet, steamy, and hilarious, this book hits all the marks for a perfect read. As soon as I started it, I was drawn in and only released when I got to the final page. And if you’re familiar with Schlosser’s other work, which you should be if you like Fae romance, then you’ll even see a familiar face or two.

Overall, I found this book delightful and recommended it for all lovers of fantasy romance.

For starters I am incredibly surprised about how much I loved this book.
It is a fantasy romance book with fae and time travel.
The book starts with Hannah who is chronically ill from an unknown cause.
In comes Ellister who isn’t quite normal and there is something off about him that Hannah can’t put her finger on. The only thing that she does know is that they have a cosmic connection.
This book is absolutely incredible with amazing writing and a beautiful love story. I can’t wait to read the next one !

This is a great read! An intense and chemistry-filled fae romance with magic, intrigue, well-developed characters facing a heartwrenching situation, and a gorgeous, passion-filled romance

Hannah is a young human woman who lives in a cabin on her beloved family farm. Working with her parents, she was living the life that she’s always wanted until she became sick. Her body is shutting down and nobody can tell her why. She knows her time is limited, but her family is fighting as hard as they can for her, and they’re preparing for a fundraising event to raise money for her medical care when a handsome stranger appears on the farm.

Ellister is a tormented fae whose job who arrives at the farm to fulfill a bargain made generations before. He needs to collect payment on a past favour, and the price is Hannah’s soul, which he must return to his master upon her death.

From the very beginning, there is a strong connection between Hannah and Ellister. They are attracted to each other, but believing that he is there to buy the farm from her parents, Hannah is instantly enraged by his presence, even if it brings her peace and relief from the almost-constant pain that she suffers from. The draw of wanting to be near him, while hating him, creates wonderful chemistry, especially as Ellister finds himself unexpectedly falling for Hannah.

“What I feel for you is unmatched by anything I’ve ever experienced. I don’t even have a name for it. It’s literally indescribable. All I can say for certain is that I would do anything for you.”

Torn between his duty and the feelings he is developing for Hannah, Ellister wrestles with his fate – and with hers – as the two of them fall hard for each other. It’s sweet, passionate, and beautifully emotional, with Hannah’s illness making it all the more heartfelt.

I’ve never felt safer or more content than I do now, and I’m just grateful for every minute I have with him. “So, how long will you stay, then”
“As long as I have to.”
That vague statement requires clarification. “As long as you have to for what?”
“To be here with you.”
Stunned, I blink. “Are you saying you’ll…stay until – the end?”
“Is that what you want?” There’s a tinge of hope in his question.
“More than anything.”
I hear him swallow. “Then, I will.”
“Why?”
“Because you need me.”

It’s a gorgeous, swoon-filled romance that is full of emotion, chemistry and passion. I loved watching things develop between these two despite all that they are facing, and can’t wait to see how their story unfolds.

“You’ve only known me since yesterday.”
“It’s enough.”
“Enough for what.”
“Enough for me to know you belong with me.”

I really enjoyed this book. I love a fantasy/paranormal novel, but they’re often long and quite the undertaking to dive into. This is shorter book that is well written, easy to read and which very quickly sucked me into the story. I loved this first part Hannah and Ellister story. Ellister’s world is well-developed and intriguing, those final chapters bring twist after twist as Ellister fights to save the woman he loves, and the stage is set for an exciting conclusion when their story continues in The Dark Fae's Destiny.

I loved this one – 4 stars!

The Moonlight Duet is a spin-off of Jamie Schlosser’s Between Dawn and Dusk series, featuring Ellister, who was an antagonist in the latest of that series, first featured in The Fae Warrior’s Princess.
A native of Valora, but relegated to the Lost Land for a great deal of time, Ellister is finally free to use his magic to explore both worlds with his ability to open gates. But, beholding to the Lord of the Lost Land, he finds himself in the human realm to collect on a deal made long ago in the human realm—the kind of bargain that Fae who were more like boogeymen made: to collect the child promised to him generations ago. Only to find that his time in the Lost Land has changed what was meant to be. The magic skipped a generation, and the youngest family member is no child, but a full-grown woman. A woman who affects Ellister like none other. And he doesn’t think it’s just because of what the Empath Princess did to him with her gift. It’s more than empathy, and even more than the bond created by the bargain that promised him her life. Hannah fascinates Ellister, and the longer he spends with her, the more desperate he grows to find a way to save her from the circumstances he set into motion before she ever existed.
Despite the tragedy of their circumstances, the draw between Hannah and Ellister is palpable, and readers familiar with Jamie’s other works featuring Fae from Valora will recognize the way destiny finds a way to subvert the expected. I’m eager to get the the second part of their story and see how they work past the circumstances they find themselves trapped in, that essentially make them enemies, no matter their growing feelings and undeniable bond. I’ve yet to be disappointed by any of Jamie’s work—and I believe I’ve read almost all of her published works thus far—and I’m certain the second half of this duet with have just as many feels and be just as addictive and hard to put down as Monster in the Moonlight is.

Monster in the Moonlight by Jamie Schlosser is the first book in the Moonlight Duet, and I was captivated from the very first page! Hannah and Ellister are EVERYTHING!

Hannah is fascinating and interesting and dynamic, such light shines from her, and she's so endearing.

Ellister is different, and it's refreshing! Still driven, still focused, still commanding, and it makes him such a fascinating character!

The world building is fascinating, the characterization addictive, and you'll be so caught up in the story, on tenterhooks awaiting whatever happens next.

There's drama, there's magic, there's mystery, there's love, there's fate, and so much more, wrapped up in part one of a duet that has you on the edge of your seat for part two! So, I've met the monster, and now, I'm ready for the magic! Bring it on!

Ellister is unlike any Fae I have read about. I’m fact the whole storyline behind The Dark Fae’s Bargain is new take on fae for me and I rather enjoyed it. The chemistry between Hannah and Ellister pulls you in and you want to dislike him because of why he is there but you end up liking him because of his lack of how the human world works, what cats are and his tenderness towards Hannah. Then you have Hannah, who is so incredible and mysteriously ill but still manages to keep a brave face. Jamie Schlosser is a new to me author and I enjoyed her writing style and this books flow. This story was well written and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book, The Dark Fae’s Destiny.

I’ll confess that I have read very few fantasy books but I was fascinated by “Monster in the Moonlight”. Hannah is a human who is dying from an unknown disease. When everything seems to be going for the worst, a handsome stranger appears to change her destiny. Not in the way she expects though. Ellister is a fae with a mission that he has been entrusted with since before Hannah was born. But as soon as he meets her, his plans are changed because the connection he creates with her is very special. Now he is torn between fulfilling his responsibilities or failing the loyalty he has towards his master.

Reading this book was a pleasant experience. The story is immersive, the characters well developed and the chemistry between them is very palpable. Now I'm waiting for the second part!

Monster in the Moonlight is my new favorite read. I loved this world. The characters were well written and the storyline was so interesting. I loved Hannah. She was funny, witty, and so strong. Ellister was amazing. He was dark, broody, villainy, and perfect. I loved the cliffhanger and cannot wait for book 2.

Okay so dated mates really isn’t my jam, I don’t really read it much but this one did it so well and now having a little cliffhanger at the end I need the next in this duet and I have to see if his newest plan works out or not.. hopefully it does

Ignoring the fact that this book could ever be written by the same person who wrote the most adorable and funny Fae romances

𝑻𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒔: Fantasy, Fae, Slow Burn, Duet, Anti-Hero

I cant tell you how excited I am to return to the extended world of Valora. We first visited this world in the From Dusk Till Dawn series and now we get to see another side of the world that we have only seen a small part of in this series. This duet can be read as a stand alone, but I highly recommend the sister series as well.

Ellister is much more anti-hero then hero of this book, but even those how have had a darkened past can work to change their ways and earn a HEA, at least hopefully we will get there by the end of book two.

Hannah has been betrayed so many times in the past & has built a wall up to guard her heart, but a strange illness and a gorgeous stranger work to crumble these walls, even if Hannah has little time left in this world.

This is definitely a book that gives you all the feels, I was definitely in tears at the end of this one and I cannot wait to see where this duet goes.
