Shark: Stories of Life and Death from the World's Most Dangerous Waters

Rate this book
Shark picks up where previous Adrenaline titles such as Rough Water and Deep Blue left off, with a collection focusing on man's terrifying interactions with one of the planet's most frightening beasts -- an animal that arouses our most primal fears -- fears that were recently brought to the surface by an outbreak of fatal attacks on this country's beaches. From novelists to sailors to oceanographers to divers, man's encounters with sharks have produced a diverse body of gripping, often inspired writing by great names in adventure literature. Along with 16 black-and-white photos, selections feature a wide range of work with an emphasis on thrills and chills, including Peter Matthiessen on the great white shark, Edward Marriott on hunting man-eaters off Nicaragua, Richard Fernicola's account of the 1916 shark attacks that inspired Peter Benchley's Jaws, and Jacques Cousteau's studies of the creatures.

Hated the book. Most of the stories were about fishermen who killed sharks and how they did it. If you love sharks, do not read. The only reason I gave it one star is because you can’t give zero and also one chapter was spectacular. The “Great White Shark” chapter written by Peter Benchley was informative. I learned nothing new about sharks and would not recommend this book to anyone.

Shark: Stories of Life and Death From the World's Most Dangerous Waters ed. By Nathaniel May (Thunder's Mouth Press 2002) (597.6+/-). This is a collection of shark stories from some of the best of our nature writers. Peter Benchley, Peter Matthiessen, Tim Cahill, Ernest Hemingway, and Jean-Michael Cousteau are featured here along with many other writers. Be careful before you stick so much as a toe in the water! My rating: 7/10, finished 1/5/15.

This book is very interesting. It talks about some shark attacks and is a good story to get your heart going. Just the way it captures the action is amazing within itself. It was really intense in some parts but it just made it that much better. I knew it would be good but it really surprised me how good it was. After reading this book I want to find more like it. How real and interesting it is.
