In 1829, life west of the Mississippi was filled with constant peril and hardship. At any moment, a settler might find himself threatened by a murderous Indian or a deadly beast.
Only rugged mountain men like Nathaniel King had the courage to challenge the unknown dangers for the freedom the wilderness offered. But when Nate and his mentor Shakespeare McNair made enemies of two Flathead Indians, their survival skills were tested as never before.
If either man made one mistake, both would suffer merciless deaths.

I really enjoyed the read until the last chapters. The young warrior death really bothered me. The writer should have allowed him to return home to his wife and child. Secondly, I didn't like the idea that a man would leave his wife so long. And the attack by the beast was unreal; almost supernatural. How many aniamls going survive being shot at close range and still have the strength to come through a window. I am glad his wife survived the attack, and I am glad he had the sense to go home.
These are a series of short 150page books with a new young mountain man around 1800 and how he learns the skill he needs. Interesting plot and quick read. Clears my mind after I read a 500 page historical fiction. Gave this 4 stars
This one was a bit anticlimactic. The plot went one way when I think it could have been better another way. Instead of dealing with the Flatheads who threatened them, the story again came down to fighting Blackfeet. Still enjoyed it, though. On to the next one!
