For those who wish to master the art of magical achievement, there are numerous occult aids which may be of value. Some of these tools are amulets, fetishes, charms, symbols, talismans. These are objects inscribed with a magic incantation or sign that stands for or suggests something else by reason of relationship, association, convention or accidental resemblance - a visible sign of something invisible. They are worn or carried to avert harm, ward off misfortune, protect against danger, to bring good, insure fortunate events and attract love, luck, and favorable conditions. The seals herein are only the most popular or readily available talismans. The suggestions for uses have been modernized, shortened and simplified to suit the modern user.
Anna Riva’s “Secrets of Magical Seals: A Modern Grimoire of Amulets, Charms, Symbols and Talismans” is another one of many small books that lined the shelves of old herb stores in the early 1990s.
Like all of Riva’s books (and products), Riva doesn’t pass judgment on her readers. She also doesn’t attempt to gatekeeper, either. This book includes seals for both “white magic” and “black magic.” One can find seals, talismans, and veves that are Jewish, Christian, Islamic, Gnostic, Japanese, Chinese, and Vodou in origin.
On occasion, Riva will recommend her own products to use in conjunction with the seals, but anyone wishing to utilize these seals will recognize how easy it is to use other products as well.
The one thing that I don’t like about this particular book is that the images often appear out of numerical order on the pages which makes finding them in relation to the text a bit tedious. But, overall, this book is a perfect example of, at least to me, the kind of products that could easily be found in late twentieth century “witch shops.”
This book is a type of sampler or pick-n-mix bag of sigils and seals. It's sources vary from Agrippa's Trilogy, to the 6th and 7th books of moses, to even the Black Pullet and the squares of Abramelin. As well as that, there is a simple method of invoking the powers of these symbols rather easily.
It also includes the "power prayers" which can also be used to work with the symbols.
However, the book does have its issues and is far from perfect. Many of the seals in certain sections are either incomplete (such as a few of the magic squares) or almost unreadable (the 6th and 7th books of moses and the miscellaneous seals). Working with the seals, one can trace them, print them or as the book states "cut them out of the book!" Mutilation of textbooks aside, doing so is not recommended as doing so would clearly remove other sections of the book, including the other seals!
Can I recommend this? Well it has been out of print for a very long time and getting a copy non-digitally would be difficult and/or expensive. While mine was bought from a charity shop, it is still a rare text. If you can get a hold of a cheap copy, purchase it if for nothing more than the instructions.
