Storked!: Adoption Secrecy and the Search for Identity

Rate this book
From nothing, she had to craft something, and that something happened to be all of her.

Baby Girl was born in an unknown city to unknown parents. She lived for nine days before all evidence of her existence was locked away somewhere in Florida. Baby Girl would be reborn K.C. Sanford to live a new life in a new family. Since learning of her adoption as a child, K.C. struggled to understand her sense of self. She fell victim to the closed adoption system where knowing your identity was against the law. Who is K.C. Sanford? Decades of searching and a message from a stranger would start to unravel the mystery.

"K. C. Sanford's STORKED! (Adoption Secrecy and the Search for Identity) narrates the emotional true life story of a child in a "closed" adoption situation, along with the feelings that come with such secrecy. This memoir reads like a mystery, as it invites the reader to follow the author's quest to find her biological parents, navigating the laws which hinder her in doing so." —IndieReader (IR Approved)

I found this story about adoption very interesting. I know the author slightly, but nothing about her family or any of the context of this book. What she did so well, and I think other readers would enjoy, was to help me understand the frustration of not having access to parts of your story that are sitting right behind a locked file drawer. Kacie was an adult, and a mother by the time she was able to solve the mysteries of her birth parents. Establishing relationships with people she met through DNA helped her figure it out. We all may wonder about what really happened in our childhood, and how it affects us today, but Kacie did an amazing job, figuring out the nine months and nine days before she was “born”.

Readers’ Comments
“So compelling, I loved following the author on her journey of self-discovery.” Female reader, aged 55
“It must be so difficult now knowing where you are from. The author puts over her story in an interesting way. There’s a strong quest-like element to the story which draws you in. I would recommend this to anybody interested in adoption, how it historical works, and how difficult it can be for the child in later years.” Male reader, aged 67
“I’ll say this for the author, she’s persistent. Fascinating read.” Male reader, aged 42
“There’s a lot of anger in this lady’s story; and rightly so. I felt it with her. I wouldn’t say I enjoyed the book – it’s too sad for that – but I felt it was a compelling read, the sort I had to finish to find out what happens.” Female reader, aged 44
“Congrats to the author for writing such a personal story and sharing it with us.” Female reader, aged 54

To Sum It Up:
‘A fascinating insight into closed adoption and a woman’s search for her roots. A FINALIST and highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards

Terrible book

The story could have been quite interesting. Unfortunately it was overshadowed by the author's anger and bitterness. It comes through on almost every page and makes the book difficult to read. I read this after reading another book about an adoptee's search for answers. There was certainly some anger in that story but nothing like the depths reached in this book. The author seems to feel wronged at every step and thinks the world owes her because she was adopted. There are other books out there covering the same subject with less whining, take a pass on this one.

A little disjointed at times…

I’ve read multiple adoption/reunion books and this one seems a little disjointed in the way the material is presented. There are times when the reader may not be sure who the author is writing about and that can be confusing. Toward the end there are some passages that seem to run on and on and really serve no purpose. But…if you are wanting to read a book about adoption/reunion this one is okay and you should probably read it yourself and draw your own conclusions. Now onto Relinquished by Robert Yaffe.

This was better than many of the adoptee reunion books I’ve read.

The facts and explanations of closed adoption in the book are very detailed and accurate. Unfortunately, it is not something the general public will understand. I have yet to come upon the book that can break through to the non-adopted.

Great Read!

I am the only person in my immediate family who isn't adopted. I've always been interested in adoption stories. Those willing to share their stories do a wonderful service to others as well as themselves. Thanks!

Thought provoking story that dives into the realities of adoption. Well written and engaging. The author discloses information when needed but keeps most reveals a secret. By the end you piece together and understand why the author chose to tell the story in that sequence of events. The author also educates the reader on the history of adoption and how it’s changed. You root and grow up with the author as she discovers her identity.
