Doing it Right

Rate this book
In these two wickedly funny, sexy novellas, MaryJanice Davidson introduces the sort of lovers who'll steal everything . . . your wallet, your keys, your inhibitions, and sometimes even your heart. Thief Of Hearts There's never a dull night in the ER for Dr. Jared Dean, especially when he sees the woman of his fantasies beating the crud out of the city's biggest, toughest mobster. It's enough to get a guy all hot and bothered. Not that it matters when SuperHotButtKickingChick gets away without giving her name. The name's Kara, aka The Avenging Angel, sort of a Robin Hood with better shoes. But now her latest revenge stunt has just landed the gorgeous doc on a mobster's hit list. There's only one thing to guard Dr. Jared's extremely fine bod until she can figure a way out of this mess for both of them. Jared's only too happy to accommodate. Anything to have her close at hand . . . and in his bed. As for her closed heart? He's got a plan for that, too . . . Wild Hearts Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. Too bad he was trying to steal her car. Kat Wechter has no intention of letting that happen. Not one to ever play it safe, it's amazing what an irresistible bad boy can drive a woman to do (pun intended). But Chester "Chess" McNamara is not your typical car thief. Seems he's fueled (ouch) by more complicated motives. And to find out what they are, Kat is more than willing to go along for the ride . . . (couldn't resist). Two novellas in one book and FUN with a capital F!

The First Novella "Thief of Hearts" is about an E.R. doctor named Dr. Jared Dean and Kara - who is better known on the streets as The Avenging Angel. They have a chance encounter and their lives become entwined in a screwball "it can only happen in a book" way. Lot's of fun, lots of actual laughing out loud, and just enough heat with the loving to make a girl need a cool drink of water.

On a side note - I love how MaryJanice Davidson will switch traditional roles in her books (he is the nurturing doctor - she is the kick-ass thief) and her use of humor always makes me smile. AWESOME!

The second and shorter novella "Wild Hearts" takes place a few years later and catches us up with a couple of characters that had bit parts in the first novella. It was a fun little romp - and a nice way to tie up the book. I wouldn't mind more authors doing this actually. I often find myself wondering what happened to this character or that character after reading a book - so it was quite enjoyable to actually find out!

And as I say in almost every review of MaryJanice Davidson - I will read anything she writes. Love her!

I was looking for something light and fluffy to wash out all the rape I've been reading about, and this was not it. Sure, it started out really appealing and fun, and by the time I was clued into just what I was reading, I was pretending I was reading a porn script so I could keep suspending my disbelief.

It's not that the lust stories in this book are unrealistic. People's hormones get the better of them all the time. It's the love aspect injected into the stories that had me raising an eyebrow. Maybe I'm too much of a cynic to believe in love at first sight. Maybe it's some deep-seated division in my mind between desire and love (which wouldn't explain my marriage at all). Maybe it's the number of pages devoted to characters musing on how hawt they find their counterparts, and then having sex. But I didn't buy that any of the couples in this book actually loved each other.

Desire? Oh, hell, yeah. Davidson is quite skillful in the building of sexual tension, while also making a reader laugh. She writes very evocative, vivid, detailed sex scenes.

But aside from "this is a porn book, so whatever," I didn't actually believe that the characters would fall in love forever and ever and be blissfully happy together. Because, in the first story especially, the relationship can't survive without the woman discarding everything the guy loves about her. She starts out strong, independent, aloof and paranoid, and he's wholly intrigued, and can't stop thinking about her. Then the mystique drops, she decides she likes being subservient (wha?), and bam, there go all her trust issues.

Maybe it's some personal thing I have, but I just can't get into a love story where a strong, independent woman has to change so radically in order to be an object of affection. Whatever happened to loving someone just the way she is? Or does that only apply to guys?

Doing It Right by MaryJanice Davidson consists of two stories, Thief of Hearts and Wild Hearts.

Thief of Hearts, the longer story, is about the love match between an ER doctor, Dr. Jared Dean, and the city's so-called The Avenging Angel, Kara. In between fighting and hiding from the mobster Kara had a run-in with, she and Jared were falling in love. Jared fell hopelessly in love with her and he made it known from the beginning while Kara was scared and standoffish. Obviously, by the end of the story, they were a happy couple, but there was a lot of steamy fun and sex between them during the story.

Wild Hearts had Kat Wechter, the coddled (or, at least attempted to be coddled, but she would have none of that) baby sister of the city's DA and her love interest, an undercover cop named Chess McNamara. That one didn't have the many steamy sex scenes like the first story, but there was one and of course they fell in love. The story also had an appearance by Kara and that was cute.

The reader must keep in mind that this book, Doing It Right, is not meant to be taken seriously. It is just a fluffy, light-hearted read for a rainy afternoon. Take it as that, and you'll enjoy the two stories.

Picked this up because I typically enjoy MaryJanice Davidson's humorous and light writing. While the two stories carried the same light tone that I love, the humor fell rather flat. Davidson's novels always carry scenes that get quite ridiculous but they typically are believable for the plot and characters. This wasn't the case in these two stories. The stories ended up nose-diving into the land of zany corniness after the first few pages and they lost me once that happened.

I think I'll be steering clear of Davidson's contemporary romance works in the future. I'll stick to only her Undead series instead.

2 short stories. Both had potential to be remotely interesting, but as you can tell from the title, the plot gets lost in exchange for sex. (At least the first short story did.) Both short stories tie together because of the characters. I just read it because it's one of the few MJD stories I haven't read. If the second story had had time to develop I might have liked the characters. They were a little unbelievable, but they were at least funny.

Don't buy this book expecting the best, because you will be disappointed. It's not a total let down, because you do get your money's worth of MJ's steamy characters. Dirty filthy smut is not in short supply in this book! But if you're expecting the usual MJ snark found with Betsy, Fred, or the Royals, you will be disappointed.
Your best bet is to A) suspend every ounce of logic you have (reading with one eye closed may help), or B) skip the thin plot and jump right to the naughty bits.

This author's stand alone books are very hit or miss for me. I made it about 25 pages into the first story before I had to give it up. The story was just a little too over the top for me and I found I couldn't care less what was happening to them. This one just wasn't for me.

I really wish happy endings didn't mean getting married and pregnant. How about realising they're in love and that being enough??? Happens too many times in books

As with most of MaryJanice's books, I laughed through a good part of both stories in this one. If you need a laugh this book - either story will do that for you. The first one is a cat burgler who has to protect the "hero" because he inadvertantly walks in and sees something that he should not have... the face of a killer - one that no one has lived to tell anyone about.

The second one the D.A.'s sister catches a theif stealing her car, turns the tables on the theif and takes him to her brother the D.A. and finds out he's not how she thought he was....

Both books are a hoot and something that you'd never see in real life (or I don't think that you would). I can just say keep them coming MaryJanice, you are great medicine for the heart.

Story One:

Dr. Jared Dean can hardly believe he's watching the woman of his fantasies beating the crud out of the city's biggest, toughest mobster. Kara never meant for her latest revenge stunt to land the gorgeous doc on a hit list, but there's only one thing to do: guard Dr. Jared's extremely fine bod until she can figure a way out of this mess for both of them.

Story Two:

"messing with the D.A.'s sister is crazy, but.."

OK so Theif of Hearts was GREAT I love MJD and I have never read a book where I liked the main male character so much I mean Dr Dean was hilarious and sexy to boot. Wild Hearts was a good follow up but I wish it was a novel and not a novella because it was too quick everything happend in like tha spain of minutes but I guess thats why its a novella. Excelent read all in all if you are a fan of MJD or just a fan of laughing ur ass off I would definitly suggegest this book.

The first story, of Kala and Jared, was quick and fun. Infused with MJD's typical sarcastic humor and outrageous situations, it was an enjoyable read. The second, a follow-up on the characters, was amusing, but hastily put together and not very satisfying. It's very short however, and was worth reading for the marvelously droll comments made by an adorable 4 year old.

The Good: Two MJD romance/erotica stories make up Doing it Right. It's a quick read and the sex is super hot.

The Bad: Unfortunately, the sex is the only thing right about this book. Davidson attempts her well-known style of humor here, but it just doesn't work for the characters. They can't pull off the wit nor the scandalous, ridiculous situations they are thrust into.

Hot and way funny! MaryJanice Davidson does it again with her humor and romance combination. Had me all hot and bothered one minute than laughing so hard the next.
Two fun, and connected stories about unexpected love matches, with strong funny women, and hot funny men. Great combo, and fun to read.

This is actually two stories which are connected. Set in Chicago, the plot seems to pay homage to the comic version of the vigilante with the mysterious A.A.(Avenging Angel)
I enjoyed the fact that the superhero was female, but I wish a little more of her background was given.
The story is action packed and fun.

This was great romance fiction. Often in romance the characters are unbelievable and this was as believable as vigilanteism will ever get. My favourite part of the entire book was the armadillo pickle dream! I love love love absurdist and humorous erotica and a pickle fetish was the perfect cherry on top of my day. Would recommend to people who like weird things.

At first, I thought the lead female character was bionic or part of a secret government experiment. And then I realized, no this is set in a semi-reality based world...hmmm. Still, a great fun read and the intimate scenes were both parts funny and sexy--hard to do! Loved it.

***Spoiler Alert***

I am know going to buy an armadillo suit and some dill pickles.

This was really 2 different stories. The first was a novella that was actually very good for the type of fluff romance it is. It was an engaging, enjoyable, easy read. The second was a follow up story, which left a lot to be desired. The whole book took less than 2 hours to read.

Well, it was certainly 'erotica' and the storyline was predictable for the genre. Can't say it was a great read - it was fluffy and and easy book to devour in a few days. Would have been faster but I kept falling asleep!

Cute little quick read, with some laughes and steamy hot scenes, but I wouldn't recommend it if you want a long, sit down kind of read. There are two stories in this book, plot lines descent, but at times I felt like this quirky little book was trying to take its characters to serious.
