Undead #1-4

Betsy the Vampire Queen

Rate this book
It's been a helluva year. First I lose my job. Then, I'm in a car accident. Next, I'm waking up dressed in clothes I wouldn't be caught dead in (pink polyester and cheap shoes courtesy of my evil stepmother). But guess what? I am dead and what really bites is that I can't seem to stay dead. Every night, I wake up with a horrible craving. Not chocolate—mom would approve of that. No, all of a sudden my snack choice is blood, and I'm not taking well to a liquid diet.

Yep, that's me: Betsy Taylor, a single, unemployed Minneapolis secretary. Taller at six feet than most of the men I meet. Pretty, but so dull my cat runs away three times a month. And now: a vampire. No sooner am I undead, than my stepmonster steals my shoes. My hellishly expensive, to-die-for shoes. What's worse, my new friends have the ridiculous idea that I'm their prophesied vampire queen. I must help them overthrow the baddest vampire lord they've seen in five centuries. Personally, I don't care—until they use a powerful temptation: designer shoes. How can I resist? No more than I can resist Eric Sinclair, the studly but infuriating bloodsucker I call "sin in a suit."

Vampire Queen or not, the bills keep coming. And that means getting a job... in the shoe department at Macy's. So man shoes, so little time! Especially when my friends keep after me to do something about all the vampires getting killed in St. Paul. Then my life takes an interesting turn when I find out that I have a long-lost sister who just happens to be the devil's own daughter—destined to rule the world. By Christmastime, all is not merry and bright.

Like I said, it's been a helluva year...

Includes Undead and Unwed, Undead and Unemployed, Undead and Unappreciated and Undead and Unreturnable.

This was a horrible set of stories about a Republican , Xtian vampire. I wish I didn't have the bizarre OCD where I have to finish something I watch or read just to complain about it. Absolutely horrible, unintelligible dialogue, asinine plot. And I love vampire books.

I've been off vampire stories for awhile, but Betsy has definitely brought me back into the fold. Despite her vainness and self absorption Betsy is still a lovable heroine (maybe they even help to make her likeable!) My friend and I have found ourselves repeating some of her sarcastic comments and laughing ourselves silly because of it.

The story in the first 4 books (and even the first 6) concentrate on the beginning of Besty as the Vampire Queen and the building of her entourage. The first book starts with her death and goes on to how she comes to her role as the queen of the undead and how she meets her consort, Eric Sinclair. The second book builds on Betsy's assimilation to her position (and others assimilation to Betsy). She faces vampire hunters and challenges to her throne and comes out on top. The third book complicates Betsy's already complex life: she finds out about and meets her half sister...the devil's daughter. She learns that the her sister is prophesied to rule the world but befriends her with her usually snark and charm and adds her to her growing group of friends. The fourth book (and the last in this compilation) deals with Betsy and Laura and their defeat of a serial killer. To go into it more would be provide spoilers but know that Betsy can now see ghosts and Sinclair has finally proposed.

Overall, this series enjoyable and filled with amusing characters (all of course gorgeous). These books are fun and quick reads that will definitely brighten up your day and have you chortling for days.

I read the first book and haven't stopped since. Betsy definitely grabs you and runs away with you whether you want to or not. Love, love, love this book!

For a 700+ page book, I think I took it out pretty quick! A few notes: I did like this book BUT there were a bunch of things I didn't like about it. Some of the characters were unnecessary, Betsy was amazingly annoying in many parts, Sinclair was kind of thick (his inability to not "get it" was overwhelming at times), and the fact that it was OK that some of the prophecies from the Book of the Dead were fulfilled but some weren't - especially with Laura. BUT the most IRRITATING part of this book was that, when you read the last page, it's like reading the last page of a chapter. Absolutely NOTHING is resolved at the end of the book. And that killed me.

Kinda fun romp through the dark side, definately some humor, but a little "Anita Blake" like with the smart mouth and couldn't help but see the similarities between the two.

I just love Betsy's snarky attitude and her love/hate relationship with Sinclair. It's always interesting to see how other authors view vampires and their politics and their special "gifts" and such.

Clumsily written, flat jokes, narcissistic, shallow, vain, stupid main character. At page 190 when she had to be bribed with designer pumps to do the right thing, I had had enough!!!!

Betsy Taylor had it all, once. She cashed in on her blonde-haired long-legged good looks and was a model. But at the age of 30 she’s decidedly over the hill, and with no ring (or sugar daddy) to show for it. Her home life is fairly disastrous – with her parents divorced and her father married to a liposuctioned creature of horror, Antonia ‘the Ant’ who hates Betsy and steals her shoes.

So when Betsy finds herself on a morgue slab she isn’t all that surprised . . . really, it’s just another thing in a long line of personal disasters.

What Betsy isn’t prepared for is to wake up – undead! Undead and with awful pasty skin that clashes with every colour palette in her wardrobe! Even worse than that though, Betsy is hungry . . . starving. But a little neck-nip of a cute detective and cuter (but gay) doctor has them turning into lust-ridden puppies.

And the hits keep on coming when Betsy is approached by a drop-dead-gorgeous (literally) guy called Eric Sinclair and his minion-buddy, Tina. They claim that something called ‘The Book of the Dead’ foretells of a vampire queen rising to take control of the vamp population . . . and that Betsy is just that queen.

The ‘Undead: Queen Betsy’ series by MaryJanice Davidson began in 2004 and is now ten books deep (with at least two more to come). This is one of my all-time favourite paranormal series, and I feel the need to share the love.

Davidson’s series is hilariously similar to Molly Harper’s ‘Jane Jameson’ – told in first-person narrative by a newly-awakened vampire as she navigates and perks and upheavals of her newly undead life . . . but that’s where the similarities end.

Betsy is a divinely ludicrous and self-involved protagonist. She’s hot, and she knows it. She has a one-track-mind that is often narcissistic and she speaks like a Gilmore girl on crack. When she awakens as a vampire one of her first thoughts is how to adjust her makeup to her new ghostly pallor – that’s just the kind of heroine she is. Betsy’s narcissism is never so awful that you can’t laugh at her; her big head makes her oddly endearing and always funny. Even when Betsy is in the middle of a werewolf smack-down her outfit is never far from her mind;

Unlike what happens in a karate movie, these guys didn’t take turns. Nope, it was dog-pile time, with me on the bottom. (Did that make me the dog? Oh, never mind).
I jerked my face to the side, just as a fist slammed through the floorboards where my head had been.
“Wait. Wait!” I screamed.
Three fists (from two different people!) paused in midair, as I pulled my legs up, yanked off my saddle shoes (vintage, 1956, eBay, $296.26), and threw them into a corner.
“Okay,” I said. “Go.”
I blocked (barely) another fist, catching it on my crossed forearms à la Uma Thurman in Kill Bill (either one). I had zero martial arts training, but by God, I'd remember anything Uma did.

- ‘Undead and Uneasy’ book #6

The ‘Undead’ series is all about how Betsy not only copes with her new undead status, but the realization that she is undead royalty. Betsy hasn’t been dead for a week when the local vampire population start approaching her and asking for her royal advice and guidance. Someone so self-involved and designer-obsessed is certainly not prepared for the divine responsibilities of the crown. Reading Betsy’s reaction to her queenly status is bellyaching hilarious – especially when the vampire Eric ‘Sink Lair’ Sinclair informs her that she has duties to fulfil.

Yes, Betsy has a romantic love-interest and his name is Eric (note: Sinclair, not Northman). These two have a very unconventional romance . . . it goes from hatred of volcanic proportions to resentful attraction and then landing right on lustful love and begrudging acceptance. Eric Sinclair is a smoulderingly handsome bad-ass – he is the quintessential vampire, and Betsy is all too happy to call him out on his tall, dark mysterious vampire-clichés.

I opened my mouth to yell – or bite – which proved to be a tactical error, as he used it as an excuse to shove his tongue into my mouth. I made fists and hammered at his chest as hard as I could, and I actually heard something snap. He shrugged off the blows and deepened the kiss. My knees went weak, which was annoying beyond belief. I'd never been so attracted to someone I absolutely despised, and it was infuriating.
I could feel his hand on the small of my back, pressing me close to him, could feel his hard length against my stomach – how could he want anyone after what just went on upstairs? Didn’t he need a nap? Or a shower?
He pulled back, so abruptly, I staggered. “There,” he said, sounding indecently satisfied. “Now you’ll stay, and we’ll chat.”
The crack of my slap was very loud, and I was savagely thrilled to see him rock back on his heels.
“If you touch me again, I’ll kill you.”

- ‘Undead and Unwed’ book #1

The good news is that Eric and Betsy hook-up early on in the series (so lots and lots of sexy-time ensues). The real focus of their continued romance is how they cope with happily-ever-after when they have a resentful attraction.

One of the best things about the ‘Undead’ series is the cast of kooky-cool secondary characters who surround Betsy. There’s her rich best friend, Jessica. Gay doctor buddy, Marc. Suspicious but cute detective, Nick Berry. Sinclair’s right-hand-woman, Tina and a cache of sister spawn, evil stepmothers, ghostly roommates and psychic werewolves. Some of Davidson’s best laugh-out-loud moments come from Betsy’s repartee with these zany individuals.

MaryJanice Davidson’s ‘Undead: Queen Betsy’ series is a perfect comedic paranormal romance. This is the series to read if you don’t like how dark Charlaine Harris’s ‘Sookie Stackhouse’ books have become. Or if you wish that Molly Harper would release another twenty ‘Jane Jameson’ books. Read Betsy for a hilariously-sexy good time with a sweetly self-involved heroine as she reluctantly takes the crown.

This book is so fun. It's definitely a product of its time. Lots of strange early 2000's references, some not-so-optimal references to politics. But the story is fun, the characters are goofy and enjoyable, and Betsy is a gem.

I wouldn't recommend this if you're looking for a hard-hitting, in-depth vampire novel this is certainly not it. But if you're looking for a quick, fun, goofy read and a good laugh this is the one.

*SPOILERS*

there are also a few pretty raunchy sex scenes (I believe at least one in each book) so be warned that there is no warning, they are just suddenly VERY nude and raunchy.

Read a few reviews to see if it's just me and it isn't. Betsy is shallow & annoying, and the humor isn't my style at all. I see no reason to continue. DNF.

REC RECS FOR BOOKS I SHOULD PUT ON MY KINDLE FOR MY WEEK AT THE BEACH! NOTHING DEPRESSING OR THAT REQUIRES REAL EFFORT TO READ, HOBVIOUSLY.

DO YOU LIKE URBAN FANTASY? I CAN REC A RLY LOLZY SERIES THAT I HAVE A SNEAKING SUSPICION IS A:TS FIC ABOUT CORDELIA WITH THE SERIAL NUMBERS FILED OFF.

I STRONGLY SUSPECT MARYJANICE DAVIDSON WAS IN BTVS/ATS FANDOM, BECAUSE UNDEAD AND UNWED READS EERILY LIKE A BTVS S2-ERA CORDELIA FIC WITH THE SERIAL NUMBERS FILED OFF.

A VERY CORDY-LIKE CHARACTER IS ATTACKED BY A VAMPIRE AND WAKES UP THE NEXT DAY AS QUEEN OF THE VAMPIRES BECAUSE OF A PROPHECY. LOLZY HIJINKS ENSUE.

ALSO, HER LOVE INTEREST, SINCLAIR, IS WRITTEN IN A WAY THAT FEELS LIKE ANGEL FUSED WITH JEAN CLAUDE FROM ANITA BLAKE, BY SOMEONE WHO LIKES THE CONCEPT BUT NOT THE EXECUTION OF BOATH OF THOSE CHARACTERS.

ARE THERE ANY GOOD SHIPS?

THE MAIN SHIP, BETSY/SINCLAIR, AKA CORDY KNOCKOFF/ANGEL KNOCKOFF, IS ACTUALFAX PRETTY CUTE. THERE'S ALSO A SCENE WHERE SHE GETS GROPED BY SINCLAIR'S LADY VAMPIRE BFF THAT'S SHOCKINGLY HOT, BUT THERE'S NO FOLLOW-UP ON THAT, EVER. :(

MEME, DO YOU HAVE ANY FUN READS YOU CAN RECCOMMEND? IDK WHAT BOOK I WANT TO READ NEXT.

DO YOU LIKE LOLZY VAMPIRE BOOKS THAT ARE RLY HOBVIOUSLY A:TS FIC WITH THE SERIAL NUMBERS FILED OFF?

GAY VAMPIRES OR HET VAMPIRES?

BOTH.

DOES THE WES ANALOGUE BANG THE ANGEL ANALOGUE?

SRY2SAY, IT WOULD'VE BEEN ANGEL/CORDELIA IN ITS ORIGINAL INCARNATION.

These books have to be prob in my top 3 Vampire series faves! Seriously I thought I was the only person that called people "ass hat". I find myself thinking that Betsy and I would probably be pretty good friends even though she is somewhat shallow and pretty selfish. This series will give you A LOT of great belly laughs.... One thing, I find myself at times imagining Sinclair as Professor Snape from the HP books....then I have to shake that thought because quite frankly that is just weird! ( I also would like to give props to author for her appreciation of fine footwear)

I LOVE THIS BOOK!

It's actually a compilation of the first few books in the series. It is WAY fun. The plot is great, characters are wonderful; especially the main character, Betsy, The Vampire Queen. She is absolutely hysterical. An original, in really good shoes.

If you are looking for a book that is fun and will make you laugh out loud, this is the one to read. Whenever I make a new friend, I always recommend this book and they ALWAYS love it!

Okay, I probably should have given this 3 stars, since the writing itself really isn't that great, but they are such fun to read. In fact, I have such a good time reading them, that I bumped my rating up to 4 stars. They're a total guilty pleasure. And Sinclair is...well...yummmmm. Almost on par with Edward, imho.

I loved this book. It was insouciant and flippant - taking the entire subject of vamps to a whole new, fun level. Instead of being dark and ominous, Betsy is fun, sexy, stupid and reluctant to be a vamp.

This book was my introduction to MJ Davidson. My Grandmother was the one who gave it to me and I am so glad that she did. The stories are great, and I love the base plot. I think the whole formula is a great spin on traditional vampires. Betsy makes a great queen, and I love Sinclair.
