Scarlet Seraphine should never have been born. Living in the House of Raven – the home of a race with magic and vampire blood – she is an outcast and wants nothing more than to escape her life of confinement.
But everything changes with the announcement of the Hex Trials – a deadly competition in which Ravens lose their lives at every turn. Scarlet is forced to abandon her plans to leave for a chance to claim one of the trial's most valuable prizes, the only medicine that can save her sister’s life.
With time running out and her sister’s fate hanging in the balance, Scarlet has no choice but to compete. Death follows closely in every trial, and with a target on her back, Scarlet must decide whether fighting for her sister’s life is worth losing her own.

Hannah is a huge lover of tea, a passionate writer and an avid reader who claims buying books and reading books are two completely different hobbies. She is also the author of The Crimson Scar series.
As a Bachelor of Criminology and Law, Hannah has spent years reading and writing fantasy stories with morally grey characters, villainous crimes and lots of blood.
This book has made me fall in love with reading fantasy again!
Scarlet Seraphine is a total badass but she has only one driving force…the love of her family and friends! To save her sister, Roux, and her unborn niece and nephew, Scarlet puts herself forward for the trials of the Hex despite knowing the Elder Raven dislikes her because she is a half-blood. But Scarlet also has to contend with her other sister, Ember, who is not going to go easy on her, especially with their familial ties.
As a part of the trials, Scarlet is chosen by a Dameer (human born with magic) who is hoping to become a guardian of the Hex. Believing she won’t get picked because of her half-blood status, Scarlet is pleasantly surprised and slightly amused when she meets her guardian. But will he recognise her from her double life?
This book gives me Hunger Game and Divergent vibes, but a lot sexier!
I was excited to receive an ARC of this book from this amazing debut author and it did not disappoint! I was hooked from the start and was left wanting to know what happens next. I can’t wait for the next instalment!
I was so happy to be able to read this as an ARC. It was well paced, action filled and pulled at all my heart strings.
Scarlet is a very relatable MC. I think a lot of female MCs are written with little to no flaws, but what makes a strong female lead is not how "badass" they are, it's how they overcome those weaknesses. Hannah Penfold wrote a MC that has flaws and weaknesses, but her love for family and loyalty helps her overcome and achieve her goals.
I am a huge sucker for vampires and action. This was hunger games, vampires, romance and magic wrapped up into one beautifully done package.
I enjoyed this book immensely and can't wait to see where this goes. That epilogue left me needing answers.
I found this book by scrolling Reels on Instagram one day.
**reads one scene out of context** --> adds to KU!
Scarlet "Scar" is an outcast in her own community, discriminated against for something she had no control over (she's half Raven, half human)! But she had a heart of gold, despite it all. The Hex Trials roll around and of course everyone signs up for the glory of it all, but Scar joins in the hopes of getting medicine to save her older sister (how could you NOT root for her after that?).
The action was stellar, the FMC was witty and fierce, the MMC was mysterious and swoon-worthy, a nice slow burn and some spice to reward me. Yasss! The ending has me feeling some type of way, like SOME. TYPE. OF. WAY. A great book to read if you're looking to get lost in a unique world. I devoured this book in 2 days, so that should tell you something!
I absolutely LOVED this book! “You are my raven, and we fight together.” I stayed up all night to finish it, one of the best books I’ve read all year. Vampires Romance A kick butt FMC A swoon worthy love interest A deadly competition I fell in love with the characters and the story behind them, the way that it was all stitched together was beautifully done and I could not put the book down. The world of Scarlet Seraphine is a world that I want to go to (definitely will not be competing in the hex trials though) this was worth every minute spent reading it and I could not recommend it more. Can’t wait for the next book <3
Easy for me to admit, I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! Especially: ~The intrigue of the unforgiving society inside the House of Raven ~Vampires, magic, and deadly competition ~Slow burn romance & forbidden love that turns SPICY (definitely a N/A book instead of Y/A) ~Main character Scarlet Seraphine and her dedication to family ~Dimitri, the loyal and hilarious best friend that stole the spot for favourite character
This book is the start of the series, and I can’t wait to see what this author brings next!!
The Crimson Scar (Book 1, The Crimson Scar series) – Hannah Penfold
I heard about this author from a colleague at work and had seen the author’s books at a few indie book shops. So, I did my first Etsy order and ordered this book and the next in the series from the author herself!
Hannah Penfold is a homegrown Western Australia author who loves a good cup of tea and is an avid reader herself. She is also a Slytherin but don’t let that scare you she enjoys beaches and sunshine!
Scarlet Seraphine is an outcast living, well more like surviving in the House of Raven. A House as it were belonging to a race of powerful vampires with magic in their veins. She shouldn’t have been born being half vampire and half human – she is seen as weak and a disgrace to the House. She wishes nothing more to be treated better to escape the life that she lives.
Scarlett lives in a simple home with her mother, her two sisters Roux and Ember and her brother Blaze. Her sister Roux, a breeder for the House, is pregnant with twins. Those Raven who become pregnant with twins never survive and neither do their offspring, unless they are lucky and fortunate enough to get the expensive medicine to help save the mother and the children. Yet on the meager wages Scarlet is paid she has no hope of helping Roux.
That is until the Elder Raven announces that soon Ravens can complete in a deadly competition known as the Hex Trials. The winner of these deadly games can pick two prizes - one of those prizes is the medicine Roux desperately needs. So, Scarlet does the only thing she can do – signs up to compete in the Hex Trials so save her sister Roux, competing alongside her older sister Ember, who Scarlet does not trust to save Roux, but Scarlet will do whatever she can to save her sister and her unborn children.
At every turn Scarlet is faced with deadly obstacles and soon learns the Elder Raven will do anything to see her wiped from the House of Raven. It seems as though no one truly believes Scarlet will survive let alone win the trials, but she will not let Roux down.
Every trial is deadlier than the last but the last trial – might every well end Scarlet and everything she hopes to achieve. Despite knowing this, Scarlet faces what is coming her head on because Roux is her only chance, and she won’t give up.
“The Crimson Scar” is an utterly addictive new adult romantasy story about a underdog who is constantly underestimate with a nice slow burn touch. Scarlet is constantly underestimated and belittled because of who and what she is but despite all this she shows true courage and strength, more than the supposed warriors of her House. I love a good underdog story about a strong FMC who fights the odds and does what is right. I also loved the interactions with Jack and seeing how they grew close slowly throughout the story. The story telling was well paced with relatable and well written characters – I mean I’m not sure I can hate the Elder Raven any more than I do and honestly, I don’t think that can be achieved unless you have a well written character much like Umbridge. I absolutely loved this book and couldn’t put it down. I’m really looking forward to reading the second book in the series, The Sapphire Crown, but I do hope we learn more about her father and his back story.
The Crimson Scar - Hannah Penfold (spoilers probable)
The Crimson Scar sees our outcast FMC Scarlet Seraphine enter into a deadly competition all in the hopes of winning the medicine needed to help her sister. Whilst competing, Scarlet finds information on her mother which leads to a search to help Scarlet learn more about who she is.
I found this book quite slow to start with and it took me probably almost half the book to get into. Once the Hex trials had started though, it got GOOD. I enjoyed the storyline of her secret fighter persona and felt like it played its part in helping explain our FMC secret fighting talent. I could tell straight away that The Teacher (aka Jack Wilde) would be our MMC and I was excited for it. I really loved Scarlets friendship with Merlot during the trails and I was SHOCKED with Merlots twist. Eyes wide, mouth hanging open, shocked. I really would have loved some dialogue between Scarlet and Merlot after it happened though, it felt a little unfinished.
To say my heart was racing during the battle scene between sisters Scarlet and Ember would be accurate. I had a suspicion those two would end up battling (I felt there was build up there with Embers 'I'm way better than you' attitude), but I was also relieved when the truth was revealed after. Whilst then immediately heartbroken to learn that Ember followed through anyway! (I'm trying not to spoil it too much!)
For a story on vampires, I really would have liked it to be a little more 'vampirey'. I love Jack Wilde. Protective, caring, funny, pretty much what you want in a MMC. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Scarlet and Jack in book two. They have a great partnership as Raven and Guardian, but also the intimacy between them that I hope progresses in book two!
4 ⭐️ - Whilst I did feel it was slow to start, it had excitement in the battle scenes, mystery, family bonds, and that cliff hanger!! Would recommend 2 🌶 - This book had one descriptive spicy scene and honestly have my fingers crossed for slightly more between Scarlet and Jack in book two 😉
Not the unprotected sex in a horse stable... yes, naked she lay on dirty hay. And for that scene to come out of nowhere involving characters that felt very YA, innocent, juvenile even (as in they had cute interactions, sweet relations and no sexy tension between them) - felt very jarring. Like a DNF. I could not take it seriously.
I did skip ahead to read the last chapter and the epilogue though. And again, that felt very sweet, almost fairytale-ish, like it was dedicated for a younger audience...
I guess the point of my rambling is to explain that the tone of this book felt very unbalanced. All the characters here were over 20 y/o to my knowledge, yet they all acted and sounded like highschoolers. And they were all so painfully one-dimensional. No nuance, no flavor, no mystery.
So on one hand you have these silly characters being their silly simple selves, and on the other you have quite brutal circumstances, trauma, cruel punishments (both mentally and physically) and young Raven women dying all around and no one bats an eye...? No one, not even the MC, expresses grief? Or really reacts to the mass death of their own precious species at all?
And then there's that super quick, unexpected sex scene where they lay on horse's bed of hay... right after she gets bullied outside the stables... that was quite the jumpscare, let me tell you.
So to sum up, while the book was enough to keep me turning the pages, it did feel a tad underdeveloped, with its random and unfinished threads, inconsistent tone (is it YA or NA?), boring side characters and the plot just making little sense in general.
Holy heck. This is hands down one of the best books I’ve read by an Aussie author! I’m completely hooked — and honestly a little annoyed it ended like that!! (Hannah! How could you?!)
From the very first chapter, I was drawn in and genuinely struggled to put it down. Did I mention it’s about vampires? Because that alone had me intrigued (huge vampire fan!) but the story itself? Utterly captivating and full of action!
I went through so many emotions reading this book — I laughed, I cried (more than once), and I felt every ounce of Scarlett’s pain and determination. She endures so much, both emotionally and physically, yet she still manages to stay strong and positive and fights for those who matter most! I was rooting for her the whole way through, even when the Ravens drove me absolutely mad with how cruel and violent they were. I wanted to punch Winella in the face!
Hannah Penfold’s writing is beautifully vivid — I could picture every scene so clearly it was like a movie playing in my mind. I truly didn't want this book to end... and not on a cliffhanger! (thankfully there's Book 2 and 3!).
If you’re reading this, do yourself a favour and grab this book! My words don’t do it justice. I cannot wait to dive into book two and see where Scarlett Seraphine’s journey goes next!
An enoyable paranormal adventure with definite hints of the hunger games, though with vampires.
Beautifully written, Penfold keeps you engaged as you follow Scarlet, the half human, half vampire Raven. The child that shouldn't have been allowed to live, so you immediately wonder why she still is still alive.
Being the underdog from the outset, with no magic, and constantly derided for her human blood, you would think Scarlet has no chance when competing against the full blooded, more powerful Ravens.
Scarlet is a wonderful heroine. Feisty but gentle. Competent and wise. Her weaknesses defintely appear to be her strengths, and her love for her sister and her family is beautifully portrayed. I won't say much about Jack, as there would be too many spoilers, but suffice to say he is yummy and like mother like daughter!
I never knew there were so many words for red. You'll know them all by the time you finish this book. An enjoyable read, a great debut and I look forward to book two.
I really enjoyed Hannah's first in this series! The Crimson Scar is a thrilling ride that is part Hunger Games, a little Twilight, and all fantasy. I loved how her passion for writing came through and I could feel how connected to her main character she was in the creative process.
I would have loved more time with the main character and her love interest so I hope that is coming in Book 2!
I enjoyed seeing how the relationship with her sisters played out, how she brought the strained family relationships to a resolve. I hope there is more to come with her mother and father in future books and I have a feeling we will be seeing all these characters make appearances as we watch Scarlett's journey unfold.
I love that Hannah is an independent author and she is writing what she loves. Her passion is clear, her storytelling is strong and the cliffhanger at the end has me ready to GO!
This book has magic, vampires, fight to the death, noble causes and love all wrapped up in it. Well woven story. Great and easy reading too. Thank you Hannah!
I had a great time reading this book! I love when a fmc fights with integrity and heart despite opposition on all sides. The plot was very interesting and I can definitely see myself reading the next installment.
I do wish all of the side characters were a little less one dimensional. I was hoping for more depth shown between her and Dimitri, Merlot, even Blaze. Maybe I just prefer to be shown rather than told.
I also felt like Scarlet and Jack’s relationship was a little too insta-lovey. I think you can have a lot of magnetism without the characters falling into each other so quickly. I mean we really barley got to know Jack at all.
Was it ever addressed why/how Scarlet knew how to fight so well? Outside of the underground fighting thing she was a part of. How was no one suspicious of how she could hold her own against her siblings and peers who literally are soldiers who study fighting/combat and train all day..?

This book was a book recommendation and one I downloaded to read straight away as the plot sounded so good.
With hunger games vibes this fantasy debut was definitely fast paced, action packed and interesting.
Scarlet is an outcast in her Raven House as she is part human. Deemed worthless she is assigned the role of a 'worker' in the stables. However she secretly sneaks over to the human world to fight in a battle ring for money.
However, when her sister has difficulties with her pregnancy she pits her name in the hat to take part in the Hex Trials. A series of trials to the death to become the next Hex Raven leader that grants the winner a prize of their choosing.
My thoughts - I really enjoyed this book. I loved Scarlet. How despite being the underdog she uses her brains and skills to compensate for having no magic. And her determination to succeed in life and the trials despite the downright abuse she faces at the hands of others.
This book had some great relationship aspects. Her friendship with her vampire freind, the bond she had with her mum and sibling as well as the relationship with her older sister who she is pitted against in the trials.
I thought the clever twist of her relationship with The Teacher, one of her fighting ring opponents was brilliant.
This is book one in a fantasy series and ended on a cliffhanger so be warned, you'll need book two.
Definitely a great read and one for all fantasy fans to add to their list.
Ahhhhhhh I'm so glad I have the next book because this ends on a cliffhanger 😱😱
I enjoyed this so much. Compelling characters, fast paced plot, an underdog but badass FMC and a cute love interest.
I loved the FMC, Scarlet and all she stood for. The family dynamics between her and her siblings felt very relatable and I felt myself rooting for a positive outcome for everyone individually.
I did think the two main characters relationship was a bit to insta-love for what I'm used to, but the MMC seems like a bit of a mystery character still so im interested to see where that goes! I'm hoping in the next book there are some more details about him and his family/heritage as well as Scarlet hopefully finding her father! 🤞
I had no expectations going into this book and was blown away. I couldnt put it down. Ive been in a book slump so thoroughly enjoyed Scarlets journey.
Everyone roots for an underdog and Scarlet is the epitome of it. Being an outcast for just being born, shes had it rough with her people. Entering the hex trials for her sister just shows her loyalty to family. Cant say the same for some of her family members *cough* ember.
Love a good slow burn. Shipping Scarjack.. Jacklet? Anyhoo, loving the chemistry between Scarlet and Jack.
I'd say this book is more forbidden love trope than friends/enemies to lovers. Regardless, I loved the plot so far.
Scarlett is a very easy character to love, following her journey through the Hex trials and the battles she must over come has been an adventure.
Whilst I feel there may have needed to be a little bit more information into the human world and the guardians, for example, I don't understand why I subset species would be required to guard someone who is meant to be elite in the protection of the royal family. Tiny plot hole for me. But otherwise I loved the read. Look forward to seeing where the journey continues...
This story was so beautifully done. Fast paced and action packed but touching and emotional. It was a take on vampires I absolutely loved reading and I could visualise everything in this unique world so vividly. Trials, slow-burn romance, family bonds, secrets and sacrifices all come together in The Crimson Scar as we are thrown into the House of Raven, a place where Ravens (a race mixed with magic and vampire blood) have been bred for generations. Scarlet is the ultimate combination of being kind-hearted and badass, and I love an FMC like that. I was rooting for her every step of the way. Also like many before me, I have completely fallen for her best friend Dimitri.
This was a really cool book. I enjoyed the change in plot from the typical stories of vampires. The Hex Trials was great and by the end I was definitely on the edge of my seat reading through the pages. It was a super slow burn and not very spicy, but I know the characters have to build up to that and of course, they have to fight for their lives, literally. I don’t want to write anything specific to spoil it because all the twists and turns is worth the read. And the ending is like WTH??? I can’t wait for Book 2!
Wanting to support a friend more than anything was the reason I purchased this book, but can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed it!
The characters are well written, story is intriguing and the magic world that Hannah creates for her readers is fantastic to get lost into. Very much Hunger Games of vampires and magic, but I enjoyed that. So much so I finished it in 3 days!
But that ending!! Hannah!! What are you doing to us!! Can’t wait for the next book to be released!
It was a really good book. Lots of thrilling moments and what on earth times but also wasn’t a fan of the characters- and often struggled to resonate with many. Also was waiting for multiple plot twists that never came and made the book feel a bit flat.
Did love the tension between Scarlet and her Jack though!!
I bought a beautiful copy with illustrations which made the reading experience so enjoyable.
The elements are there, but the plot didn't connect for me. These are vampires who don't act like vampires. The relationships need depth. I lost interest once the Teacher became her guardian and the mystery was gone. Even discovering who Scarlet's dad is was underwhelming. All potential twists hit dead ends.

I love it when I get a book that is so engaging I can't put it down! This is absolutely one of those! Brilliantly written and a storyline that just keeps you wanting to read on. I'm so emotionally invested in the characters, that I can't wait for the next book to be released, to find out what happens next!! Definitely recommend!
This was such a fun easy read! Fast paced and packed full of action with deadly trials and a super cute forbidden romance. I read this in 2 days.
I would’ve loved more of the relationships between the characters though as I wanted more of the friendship growth with Scarlet (our FMC) and Merlot and between Scarlet and Princess Leonore.
