Fire Wave must protect her mind if she doesn’t want to lose in a battle of illusions.
Now that it has been known that there are aliens among the Earth, Fire Wave is still trying to find a way to defeat Opsidia. However, the heroine gets more than she bargained for when she embarks on this mission.
She soon meets another new enemy called ‘Shadow’ and wonders where he came from, and if he works for Opsidia. Worse, this enemy might be even more powerful than Opsidia.
After a hint dropped by her nemesis, Fire Wave continues her research of the scientist, Bohr. What did Bohr really find in his files that would cause him to burn them? As her search continues, she starts to realize just how dangerous Opsidia and Shadow really are and must be careful. Especially if she doesn't want to lose her mind…
Ana Stanojevic continues to grab your attention and hold it to become invested with her main character, Aiyanna/Fire Wave, who has become confused and dealing with both an identity crisis and dealing with a darker history and side to her personality than any hero might have. All not helped by the the all-too gleefully torturous nature of her alien sister, Opsidia, and her Shadow accomplice. Written in what calls to mind a comic or graphic novel style, you do not need the pictures as Stanojevic conveys what you should see quite clearly through descriptions that spark your own imagination without them. Though it draws elements that can echo 'The Dark Knight', the relationship between Fire Wave and her antagonist evil sister is much more about jealousy and envy than Opsidia actually defeating her. Opsidia would clearly rather torture and try to break Fire Wave than end her, though she certainly does try. Fire Wave also has an uneasy alliance with Police Commissioner Mallory that is severely strained and put to the test in 'Fire Burns'. There's plenty of action and intrigue that keeps it all moving, as well as a small, but interesting window into Aiyanna's life beyond her being Fire Wave, but it is very brief and that should be expanded on going forward. This book ends on a real twist and leaves too many loose ends and questions to be the final chapter. It demands a sequel, so I do look forward to that being written. Very enjoyable YA escapism!
Thank you so much to the author for sharing an ARC copy of this book with me !!!
“There comes a time where the world opens itself to some of the strangest beings”
“It hadn’t even been a few months, and already, Fire Wave was slowly making a name for herself”
It’s the sequel of Fire Wave. Once again we meet this Lone Ranger, this night equaliser, this woman trying to set the world on fire to see it right … but what happens when the only one who’s supposed to be the hero, is being set up as the villain ? I found myself more than ever intrigued by this mysterious character that is both a thriller character and a sci-fi x-woman !!!! I’m in awe at the way the author explored her mind, this time making all her doubts and insecurities about her role emerge. More enemies and some more action scenes that made the narrative even better !!! I have a soft spot for a certain Commissioner whose role is defined moment by moment. I also particularly loved how the author left hint of what happened in the first book as the story went. The narrative was fast paced - something that I really appreciated considering the plot. And the writing style was absolutely incredible!!!! And that ending … wow !!!! Simply wow !!!!! I’m so glad I had the chance to read this book !!! And I truly hope for this story to continue on its path !!!!
“Was I really the hero this city needed? I did not have the answer to that.”
“What’s happening with you, Fire Wave? Can I trust you anymore?”
This novel is very interesting! The Lone Ranger is trying her best to make the world a better place, however to do so she must do immoral things. So she goes on this mind journey, trying to figure out who she is and what her place in the world is. I really enjoyed seeing her explore her issues and her doubts, as she discovers herself. I also was a fan of the actions scenes and her relationship with the other characters! The pacing was gret and the ending left me speechless! I reccomend this book to all superhero fans!

⮞ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 ⮜ Fire Wave this time has grown up so much and I definitely loved the new character growth, it was very palpable.
⮞ 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝-𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 ⮜ The world-building isn't the main focus in the story, but you get enough information to know what's happening around you and the world you're living in - which isn't the best in general and is full of danger and dangerous people.
⮞ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝/𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝 ⮜ I definitely enjoyed the new character growth and the new twist of events. I wasn't a big fan of the ending even tho I know is a trilogy, the ending just left me puzzled, and also interested to how the ending of this trilogy will be. It was definitely entertaining and It's a refresh from the books I usually read, so if you enjoy vigilante books and badass girls then this deliver it.
⮞ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞/TW ⮜ No romance and no spice is happening in the book. There might be some TW about mental health issues, and other issues the vigilante goes through but nothing was too triggering for me.
Unfortunately I was not able to finish the book. My mind kept wandering, so it couldn’t keep my attention. I didn’t find any character development nor plot development. Things just felt flat to me. I could tell any characters apart, other than when their name was used. I feel like this is either a YA or and Adult with the content, but is very much written like a middle grade book.
tw: acts of terrorism, death, fire, burns, bullying, mind control
I always find reviewing sequels to be so tricky. You don’t want to say too much so you won’t give away spoilers. But you want to make sure you talk about the book enough to have a good review. It’s a fine line to ride. Especially if you really enjoyed the book, like I enjoyed this one.
I read the first book a while ago and I really enjoyed it. I was so happy when the author reached out to me to ask if I wanted to read the sequel. I thought about the first book a lot and I wanted to continue the story so I’m so super glad I got access to the second book. It’s not a super well-known fact about me, as I don’t talk about it a lot, but I enjoy superheroes. My favorite superheroes (if you can count the first one as a superhero) are Deadpool and Batman. That was one of the reasons I agreed to read this book and the previous one because it reminded me of Batman. But you don’t have to know a lot about Batman to enjoy this book. It simply takes inspiration from Batman, but it is its own story.
Aiyanna, the main character, is a great character. You can certainly tell she is going through something. I appreciated that she acted her age as well. Too often I find that young adult characters (we’re talking mid-twenties) act either like teenagers or way too old. Aiyanna was perfect for her age. I also love how cringey the dialogue was. It reminds me of the dialogue from comic books. Everything was over the top in the best kind of way.
I think I’ll end the review here. I don’t want to spoil anything as you need to read the first book in order to understand what is going on in this book. I’m enjoying the series, though. This one is definitely a lot darker but still just as good. I can’t wait for the third book since this one left off on a cliffhanger and I’m still thinking about it to this day. If you enjoy comics, especially Batman, I truly think you’ll enjoy this series. Be sure to check them out today.
