ok. I'm done. I loved the start of this series, but as with almost any series that goes over 3-4 books, the law of diminishing returns has kicked in.

Honestly, I just don't feel like anything important has happened in the last few books. Also, the pop culture references felt forced in this one for some reason... Normally at least a third of them feel clever in some way/shape/form, they all fell pretty flat this time around.

Hmm

This was a relatively hard one to get through. You couldn't go a page without some out of place reference thrown in.

Most of the book is just a reunion that does very little to further the story. All characters that have ever lived are gathered and paraded to pad the middle of this read.

The story picks up at the end. After the author hints that there are maybe almost a dozen more books to go. A civil war next book maybe?

I'm not currently looking forward to the series as I had to skim a lot for this book.

I'm still holding out hope though.

Everything about this volume was terrible:
Long stretches of boring dialogue and pure silliness with lame jokes about stuff that mean nothing to me as reader, an excess of references to other works forced into the text with otherwise pointless setup, annoying supporting characters that don't matter in the plot.

60% feel like filler to get the book to an acceptable length.

None of the humor made me so much as smirk, not even once!

I think I'm over this series. There were way too many puns and pop culture references, meta references that fell flat, and the drama between characters just wasn't very interesting. I really didn't want to read that much more set in Caltopia and how the supervisors were still trying to fix technical issues for another 5 books.

I've loved this series so far but this book was a bit tough for me.
There were still plenty of hilarious parts, but it seemed like it was at least 50% pop culture reference and 30% pun. Normally those are one of the best parts, but it got to the point where they fealt like there was more gag than plot or story. I'm not above admitting that I sometimes miss the reference or joke, and have to stop and look things up to clue myself in but I think I missed half of the references in this one.
There were a lot of cameos from characters from earlier books who were semi important for a book or two in the start and hadn't been heard from since. Again, it's usually great to get a blast from the past but it fealt like every other chapter had someone popping back up who had me going "am I supposed to know who this is?" Some of which had actually died before anyone got into cal.

I think the thing that made this one actually difficult to get through was the change in narrator. It was an extra twist since there are several references to traviticus of baldree in this one and it's not his voice.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed this installment! I loved the explanation of the difference between parlay and diplomacy. I'm hoping my difficulty getting through most of the story was a fluke and that the next one will be just as good as 1-10 were.
Keep up the good work!

This is a combined review for Artorian's Archives #9, 10, and 11 as I read them back to back and it's all just starting to blur together for me anyways.

Is this series just one long string of pop-culture references haphazardly tied together with chewing gum? Seriously, 80% of the things that happen or the characters say seems to be a random reference of some kind. It's getting to the point that I'm beginning to suspect the 20% of original content is actually just pop-culture refences I don't get. The story is such a slog with very little happening most of the time. And the Meta aspects of it are getting worse, they're talking about things in terms of books and chapters now with unveiled allusions to the other books. And they think there are going to be HOW MANY of these? -_- I might have to abandon the series at this rate.

Another enthralling and evocative entry in Artorian's story.

I see a lot of poorer reviews talking about the swap in narrator, and while I miss Travis, Y'ALL NEED TO STOP BULLYING JOHN! He did a wonderful job and while there are a few names that are pronounced differently and cadence could use a little polish, his performance was fantastic and I straight up forgot it wasn't Travis reading the book a couple times.

The world created by Dakota and Dennis continues to infatuate me and I'm more in love with the characters than ever. I think there was perhaps an overuse of pop culture/meta references, some parts felt rather thick with it. The first part of the book specifically is full of meta reference, but Cal's perspective in the beginning is more of a playful interpretation of the fourth wall than a direct pop culture reference, which I found easier and more gratifying to digest than, say, a whole scene where not a sentence is said without a star wars reference.

With that being said, screw these numpties that said this book sucks, I loved it and I'm getting the next one as soon as it releases on Audible.

It's not getting better.

This book does two things throughout that make it hard to want to read: 1) references itself, pop-culture, and the world we live in continually for no rhyme or reason. I want to find the end of the story. I enjoy the parallel series. 2) Discuss world mechanics over endless paragraphs. It's almost all exposition and no discovery at this point. This book rehashes stuff that has been laid out for ten books at this point.

Stop serializing for the sake of making more books and trying to be witty.

The occasional clever references were really well done - laugh out loud amusing - up until about 3 books ago. It's like when you give a little kid their first knock knock or other joke book and they just want to tell you every single joke in the book. It's cute at first, but before long you just want to live the rest of your life.

Please go back to writing plot.

Less mechanics.

More plot. Please please PLEASE have something happen. STOP changing names. There's zero benefit in it. Whether it's a self-changed name or some other mythical archetype character decides to rename people at NOT RANDOM AT ALL AND ALSO NOT CLEVER.

Umh sooo this book is really fun and made me cry but it also took me 8 months to finish for several reasons.
The tribulation where Artorian gave away his names and had a chance to become a father to the sproutlings was immensely touching. There were really a lot of warm-hearted moments throughout the book and it felt so cozy and nice to listen to Artorian and his companions. Even the last battle was so fuzzy and devoid of suspense (a big plus for me). Obviously, I love being immersed in this world.
The reason why it took me so long to finish when I was actually listening to the audiobook, was the way it was written. Though I appreciate how the author makes random comparisons and decorates the scenes beautifully, they do this so many times that it feels like a relentless attack on the senses. It felt tiring to listen to the same scenes described 3 different ways. It went on and on like that and I am absolutely sure I would have given up on the book if I were to truly read it. I find that sad. It also makes me reluctant to continue the series even though I love the story so much.

um

Okay, so I think I’ve lost the thread here, but I’ll try. Cal is back and Artorian wakes up and is given the task of getting the demons to play ball. So he naturally schemes up a way to beat them into submission while visiting everyone he’s ever met.

Honestly, there wasn’t much story or character progression. This volume was about creating a main character from The Completionist series of the same universe and tying up the thread of the demons. It mostly served a a vehicle for author self-insertion, pop references, and showing the other characters still exist (that had probably been forgotten by the reader). The fourth wall/meta break of using “volumes” and “books” as a time measure to talk to the reader felt humorous, then misplaced, then distracting. I still enjoy the series and hope for more story. Please enjoy.

Cal is back! This is the only reason that Artorian wasn’t crushed by Odin. As it stands, that fight left him two legs shy. This limited mobility gives Cal plenty of time to sit down his administrator and put him to work!

First thing I noticed was a narrator change. Travis Baldree was simply backed up way too far, so Travis recommend a new narrator. John Pirhalla does a great job as the new narrator! Let’s be honest, as this is book 11 we are all pretty invested at this point.

This is a very fun series. It has been for a long time. There are so many references in this book! It’s fun to see if you can pick them up. I can’t wait to see how they introduce Completionist Chronicles.

Lots of names and lots of meta.

The story has been going long enough - both in the number of books and the timeline represented by these books being 100’s or 1000’s of years. There are characters who have changed names a number of times. Or characters who we haven’t seen since the first few books, so it is easy to get lost in the wider cast of characters.

This is book 11, and the authors keep cranking them out. And they are now joking about just how many books they are going to write - going so far as to tell us in the context of the story. Meta. Meta. Meta.

I am enjoying the story coming around to something that is making sense to me. The last few books seem to have wandered around, setting the stage for “coming attractions.”

Book 11 was really weak. New narrator, new accents and new names for everyone! Nothing is taken seriously at all so now you’ve just got a bunch of Godlike characters who merely fool around, play stupid jokes on each other and bring up all too frequent 4th wall breaking references about real world shit. Definitely not what I signed up for. DNF at Chapter 14/48.

Can anyone testify that the series gets better? If I skip this and goto book 12 will the narrative tone, lacking story and excessive goofiness be fixed? Is this series just more of this for the next 8 books?

Any recommendations?

As TV series have filler episode where nothing at all of substance happens and nonoe remembers they exist, this is that kind of book.

Book 10 was a slog to get through, but it had a story that seemed to matter for the whole series.
Here Artorian just flops around and talks about nothing with so many characters we haven't heard from for 5 books or more and i just don't remember who they are even. It all makes sence and all, but is just boring for me.

Kinda cute but boring at times

I really enjoy the feeling of friendship and family, he is very goodhearted. It's really cute how the author slips random references in :-). smooth criminal who’s going to moonwalk

So much fun!

This book was all the hijinks and shenanigans you expect from an Artorian novel, it was a great bit of fun to read it. My only qualm was the roundabout manner in which they reached the finale and how meta some of the narrative got.
