Melissa had a difficult time speaking as a child, and thus writing became her best friend. There she learned the power of emotion, how to communicate heartbreak, sadness, tragedy, and still hope for something better: the happy ever after.

She loves to write imperfect, possessive heroes, that will risk their lives for those they love, strong heroines that can hold their own, and steamy scenes that grab you by the throat and bring you to your knees.

Melissa lives in a small town off the coast of Egypt, and is a huge mythology buff, with a love of all things magical, supernatural, paranormal, and steeped in lore and fantasy. When she is not writing Melissa can be found singing and dancing her heart out, or up, late at night, contemplating space and the universe with a large cup of tea.

I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review of it ☺️

Night Shade was definitely fast paced! I was finished it in just under 4 hours!
The characters were likeable, the tension between the 2 main characters Greg and Dani was great, as well as the banter between Dani, Luke and Mya.
Night Shade was very well written and spicy scenes were amazing 🥵

Only downside is it left me feeling like I wanted more. I wanted more backstory and probably more tension, more lead up to the love story, as well as Dani finding out that they were all vampires, as it felt very rushed and “insta-love” with Greg. Understandably the main characters knew each other for years, but I would of loved a bit more build up as a reader. Hopefully in the second novel there’s a bit more information and development! ☺️

Other than that is was a interesting book that had you hooked from the start, I just wanted more from it.

Melissa did an awesome job and if you want a quick, easy read with a little bit of spice, Night Shade is the book for you.

NIGHT SHADE was different because it kind of flipped around the romance structure but ultimately I don't think it succeeded with this change. When the book starts, Daniella and Greg have been friends for years and they both have feelings for each other and within the first 20% they're admitting those feelings, exchanging I love you's, and Greg is telling Daniella that she's his mate. While I don't mind insta-love or fated mates I felt like I never got to actually see these two fall in love or even find a deeper love once they were together. It almost felt like starting a book halfway through and missing all the parts that establish the world, the characters, and the romance. The world building is fairly basic and while it was easy to understand it did leave me with some unanswered questions. What's this war everyone keeps talking about? Is it just between Greg and Zachariah or other vampires? Why did Daniella not know she was a witch even though she had all these powers?

While the romance is basically already done and over with at the beginning of the book, I did like seeing Greg and Daniella together; they had a lot of care and devotion to each other. I also enjoyed the rest of the Novak family and other side characters. Greg was a good balance of alpha possession while also being sweet (not counting his freakout that Daniella was trying to learn to fight). NIGHT SHADE was also very spicy though I could have done without the opening sex scene of Daniella and a hookup; just personal preference but I don't like to read about (in detail) a MC sleeping with another person.

Overall, this was a good read, fast paced, and filled with lots of sexiness. It does have a soft cliffhanger as the war against the villain isn't resolved but I admit I'm not sure if I'm going to read book 2. While I liked NIGHT SHADE I don't know that there was enough to pull me into the series as a whole, especially because the end makes me think book 2 will have the same structure of the MCs already being in love and we as the reader completely miss it.

Content Warning: Daniella's hook up initially refuses to leave and makes threats; grief over the death of a friend; brief mention of a character committing suicide under mind control

“Hey, I know you barely know us, but we’re vampires, and we’d love it if you could spend the rest of eternity with us. What do you think?”

Now that’s how you start a book! 🌶️ scene in the first sentence caught my attention off bat. I had to place my iPad down and get more comfortable in bed for the fun ride.

Daniella suggested for Luke and his family to start a business together. When they did, she ended up working there as well.

As four years have passed by. Daniella has been in love with not only her close friend but also her boss, Gregori but she does not tell him her feelings. Afraid it will hinder their friendship. We later learn there are things planned in the stars for them.

To get her needs met. She ends up hooking up with Alexander but we later learn who he is.

On a mission to stop the war, Greg, the leader of the Novak Clan must tell Daniella the truth.

This book was so fast-paced, I finished it in a couple of hours and can’t wait for the next book! I need to read Luke’s and Johanna’s story. So glad to find out that information at the end. I was curious as to what was wrong with Luke.

Thank you, Melissa Cummins, for the free EARC! As always, my review is my opinion and thoughts.

This is the second book I read by this author. While I liked the first one, I have mixed feelings about this one.

It is a friends-to-lovers book and was fast paced. There were some hot scenes and some vampire actions. The book was well-written and engaging. However, the reason I rated this book 3 stars is because Dani getting to know about the existence of vampires and excepting that her best friends are vampires was too fast. It was like 'Oh okay! You all are vampires, alright'. I know that they are literally like family to her but excepting those things so easily just wasn't, in my opinion, a natural reaction. Another thing was that this book would have been more enjoyable if Dani & Greg's relationship happened a little slowly cause we just got to know at the beginning that they are good friends and before 20% of the book was over she got to know they were mates and were saying "I Love You" to each other. If their bonding was shown a little more elaborately this book would have been more beautiful.

However, I do believe that they deserve to be with each other and I loved Mya & Dani's friendship the most in this book.

Night Shade is a really fun, fast paced vampire romance between a vampire king and a witch. Daniella is Gregori’s fated mate, she just doesn’t know it yet. Unfortunately her proximity to Gregori paints a giant target on her back to other vampires that would like to knock him down a few pegs. Daniella is being hunted and Gregori sweeps her away to keep her safe. And so starts their whirlwind friends to lovers romance.

Night Shade is a fast paced, low committment, paranormal romance. You’re going to get put into the action and into the romance real quick and receive your happily ever after in under 200 pages. I loved Daniella and Gregori's relationship and the spice was *chef's kiss*

Thank you to Melissa Cummins for giving me an ARC of Night Shade in exchange for an honest review!

Night Shade by Melissa Cummins is book one in the Chronicles of The Underworld Series. It’s a Dark, Fated Mates, Human Witch Vampire Romance and also the first book I’ve read by this author. Let me start off by saying, I’m pretty sure I’m addicted to this world. I couldn’t put my Kindle down, I read it cover to cover in one sitting. It’s been a while since I got so lost in a vampire world that I hands down loved. The worldbuilding was incredible, the descriptions were so on point that I didn’t have an ounce of trouble imagining the world as I read. The plot, pace and flow was amazing.

I really loved reading about Daniella and Greg and everything in between. I really enjoyed reading about the vampires and the effects of mates. Also I’m so intrigued about a vampire war. The relationship between Greg and Daniella was cool as he didn’t just want to protect his mate but involve her. She didn’t lose her head when information came to light, instead it was how can I help. The dynamic between them was great and I could feel the emotions. I really want to know more about this world, I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the next one!

Final review:

I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC. Right from the jump, the book dives into spice. That right there was enough to want me to read more. This book has some of my favorite things: vampires, witches, mates, possessive male, bad*** woman, touch them and...you know.

Daniella and Greg have been friends for a while, which is clear from the beginning. I wish there was a little more build up to them falling for each other and Greg realizing she was his mate. But, overall I loved them and their relationship. They would stop at nothing to protect the other. Daniella isn't a damsel in distress. She wants to be part of the action and protect those she cares about...even though Greg would probably rather lock her up somewhere to keep her safe.

This book was spicey. It took a bit for Daniella and Greg to get to that point, but when they did...it was worth it.

I really liked the feuding vampires plot. It was fun and exciting. I'm excited to see what's next! I totally didn't see Johanna being Luke's mate until he was in a frenzy over finding her. The excerpt at the end of his story....I love that Johanna isn't just some mindless shell they thought she was. She's clearly not under Zachariah's control like they thought.

Overall, this was a fun ride and I recommend it if you love friends to lovers, vampire romance, witch romance, mates, and strong FMCs.

Not gonna lie I truly enjoyed this book and can’t wait for Luke and Johanna’s story.
This was a fast paced, insta-love, supernatural world book. It was very entertaining and spicy😏🔥🔥🔥
Gregori and Daniella have been very good friends until Dani discovers Gregori’s secret and is thrusted into his world.
I loved the story and how Dani came into her abilities throughout the book. Everything was explained (the world the author presents) very well and truly this book sucked me in (🤣).
Man those spicy scenes 🔥🔥🔥 Gregori has waited centuries for her and didn’t disappoint with his dirty self 😏🔥
Loved how Daniella stood up for herself and even though she broke down she still got back up.
For being the first book in the series, the author truly outdid herself with Dani and Gregori’s story.

Interesting read!

The very beginning is something that surprised me. I have very mixed feelings about that first scene but everything changed quickly after I met all the other characters.

In my opinion the story is intriguing. The pace moves a little too fast and because of that I couldn't connect to the main characters the way I hoped.

I really liked the relationship between Daniella and Greg. It's refreshing,🔥 and deep. Enjoyed all their scenes.

Loved the secondary characters. They elevated the story for me even more.

I really appreciate the bond between two of the female characters. They are strong in every way possible and it warmed my heart to see them helping eachother not fighting.

Overall I think this is a good first book but for me it's maybe a little short. I needed more scenes establishing the main characters separately.

I was shocked by this book. It was a quick read for me because I couldn’t put it down. My favorite part of this book is how the love story plays out. The staying away for someone’s safety. Though when things go south, you drop everything to get to the one person that completes you. I do not like the ending though. It doesn’t end in a bad way. I just wasn’t ready for the book to leave me. It does give you a perfect glimpse of the next book and oh is that juicy. I will be adding the next book to my TBR. I have a few books I need to get through but this will be a series I plan to complete. I love it. I also love that the main female character is not at all what she seems. She is so much more. Even after being blindsided with this whole new world, she accepts it all with open arms. Thats not to say she wasn’t angry. She had every right to be.

Greg and Daniella are fated mates and their love story is beautiful. I was a bit surprised how well Dani took the news of otherworldly creatures, but if I have a hot mate like Greg, I am sure I will accept it much more readily than usual as well. And considering she isn't just a normal human, I guess that explains it too. The book is fast paced and I wish the author made it a bit longer and spent more time on the chemistry between Dani and Greg in the beginning, but only because I would have loved the book to be longer and to read more! Definitely worth the read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I absolutely loved reading Night Shade! This is the first book I’ve read by Melissa Cummins and it will not be the last. I can’t wait to read book 2!
The story line draws you in and keeps you guessing from page one! I’m not going to put any spoilers but, there’s definitely some awesome action and some steamy scenes that will have you reaching for a glass of water! I don’t even mind that it ended in a cliffhanger cause I’m going to jump right into book 2!
I love Daniella and Gregory and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Night Shade by Melissa Cummins is an adult read full of adventure. Melissa Cummins leaves you hot and bothered with each description of passion amongst the two main characters showing not only the love they have for each other, but that unique bond they have between the two. Where to start with the all consuming slow burn fated mates story. First I will say that yes there is a cliffhanger but at the same time there is a happily ever after. Want to understand that, read the book. Please check trigger warnings, while this is not a dark romance to me, I do know there is a few. This story hooked me from the start and keep me on the line. The ending hit me before I was ready and I can not wait to read the next books in the fascinating story. The spice is slow burn between the MMC and FMC but when it does burn, it burns hot. Overall I give this a 4.75 star rating and a 3 pepper rating.

Daniella and Gregori are interesting. It’s a pretty unique take on the Vampire trope. It’s got a good story and it’s not overly raunchy. It shows a lot of the vampire relationships. Almost Lost Me in the Beginning

*****Spoilers*****

This one is short but I feel like it tried to do too much for its length. Daniella and Gregori go from coworkers to more in a blink with all of these pent up feelings for one another and I found myself missing the knowledge, connection, and backstory that would've tied their beginning together much better. References were made to certain things that weren't included in the book or explained so I constantly felt like I had missed something. It could also use more world building and we find that the vampires are in a war that seems isolated between Gregori and Zachariah, not sure how that's a war. Besides that, the book opens to Daniella and Alexander aka Zachariah having sex, the reasoning given closer to the end was Daniella needed some way to expel all of the sexual tension caused by working alongside Gregori all the time. But we didn't get a satisfactory why behind Daniella not approaching Gregori or even any of the in between, touches, looks, acts to show Gregori was in love with Daniella, his mate. Speaking of, he doesn't tell her because he wanted to keep Daniella safe from his enemies, if they knew they would've gone after her. Which is exactly what happened and while she was more vulnerable. Sighs because there was so much potential in the book. The sex is hot but doesn't make up for other things, including the dialogue, how Daniella goes from feeling betrayed and distrustful, to learning about and accepting that there are vampires, to finding out she's a mate, to discovering her own abilities with some grumbles and mild surprise, all within a couple of chapters. Again, the book is much too short I felt for everything it tried to do.

I hated that the book truncated Gregori's name. It's Greg throughout the book which made me cringe. He's Spanish heritage and we get a little about how he became a vampire as well as how his vampire family came to be though I don't remember if it was every disclosed just how many vampires be ruled over or even how they're ruled. I can't say after reading this book that I could say what Daniella looks like outside of brown eyes. This just needs more but I will say that the beginning of that book almost tanks it for me before it picks up towards the end.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and I am leaving an honest review voluntarily.

The intro to this book is quite fascinating. I can't wait to read and learn more about Daniella and Gregori.

This book begins with a very intimate steamy scene between Daniella and Alexander. Daniella lives and works in New York City at the Novak firm. Obviously, he isn't who she desires as she imagines him as another man. Daniella seems to have an innate intuition that isn't always practical but ordinarily correct.

Greg Novak seems to be level-headed and caring. He is sweet to Daniella, and they work together at the firm he founded. A business issue comes up, and he is wise, a bit harsh in handling things, not assigning blame but finding a solution.

Shortly after the business conversation, we see the real side of Greg Novak, and he reveals his paranormal nature. What do you think he is? Does Daniella know? Luke and Mya are also probably of this paranormal world. Interesting, Daniella is his mate, and they seem to be in some kind of a war with an opposing paranormal.

This book gets exciting. Very quickly, Daniella gets attacked in her home. But guess who comes to save her, and of course, her attacker drops a ton of information he shouldn't have, so now we are sure we are dealing with Vampires. But not just any vampire, Gregori Novak seems to be like a boss for the Novak family of vampires. Daniella is still something we aren't sure of but definitely not all human.

Oh, this book does help us discover more about her, and it is very interesting she is not an average human. Instead, she is blessed with her own power. The author throws in some interesting twists in the story stuff I didn't expect but loved. I love that author incorporated more than just vampires in this story. Her inclusion of fated mates, immorality, and elemental magic make this an exciting story.

This book has some epic action scenes right before the end of the story. No cliffhanger, and the couple does get their happy ending, although not everything is resolved. There are some unexpected results from the meeting in the caverns.

I thought it was awesome that the story isn't just about protecting his mate but also including her. She was so strong but astute, and I loved that the author had a strong hero and heroine in the story. Each of the characters was amazing and inspiring, from Greg to Daniella and even Luke and Mya. They each have their own story, personality, and history.

This story was predominately about Greg and Daniella. It includes lots of suspense and steamy scene. I love how Daniella embraced this new world and learned what she could to help fight back and protect herself while also embracing the love and mates aspects. She didn't shy away or become a damsel basket case; instead, she wrapped her head around it and jumped in. I do wish there were more conversations about the vampire world or fated mates and less kissing. I do feel like something was missing in the explanation to her about fated mates.

I thought this was a fantastic read for a vampire romance, including lots of action, caring, and steamy scenes. I would love to read more about them and their friends in the future.

Light, fun, spicy and smooth.

Night Shade is book one in the Chronicles of The Otherworld series, and the first in part one, The Vampire War. Each part of the series will feature a different paranormal species. Each book will feature a different couple and will always have a Happy Ever After (HEA) for that couple.

Tropes: Strong Heroine, Billionaire Protective Vampire Hero, Fated Mates, Friends To Lovers, Mutual Pining, Morally Gray Couple, Touch her/ him and die, Dark Secrets Keeps Them Apart.

Night Shade is intended for mature audiences.

This story contains mentions of physical, emotional, mental, and sexual abuse, drug use, suicide, violence, explicit language, sexually explicit scenes, and blood drinking.

I screamed when I read the first paragraph and adjusted in the seat to get ready for the ride (although Daniella was already riding something).

"The mattress squeaked underneath them. Sweat glistened off Daniella’s skin as she rode…" well you get the idea.

I give it 🌶🌶 only because I like Greg's mouth and his way with words.

“Where did these come from?”

“I was training with Mya.” Greg froze. “You were what? Daniella, you are a human. We are vampires. There is no need for you to do any sort of training.”

“Greg,” she tried again. “I have to learn how to protect myself.”

“God damnit, Daniella! No, you don’t. You are mine!” He snarled, pinning her hands above her head. “You are mine to protect, mine to take care of, my priority. You are my mate. If you wanted to learn how to protect yourself so badly, you should have come to me!”

“Would you let me bend you over this table and fxxk you, Ella?” Ummmm sign me up

He unbuckled his belt and ripped it free from the loops, throwing it on the ground as he prowled toward her. “I am going to worship you like the goddess you are.” All I can imagine is the one handed belt unbuckling.

While Greg does have a mouth, so does Daniella.

“Two can play that game, Gregori. After all”— her fingers fell to his lap—“ with how hard you are, it would be so easy to make a mess out of you.”

Do it.

Rate: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Spice: 🌶🌶

Plot: ⭐⭐⭐ only because there were some parts I didn't like. I did however like the witchy vibes.

After reading 'Night Shade' I really feel as though I'm missing something. It's almost as though I've picked up the book, opened it to the very middle page and just started to read from there. The plot and the characters seem to be half thought-out and everything about it is very rushed which does lead to a fast, but quite a bit of a let down, read.

Daniella, as a character, I don't know anything about her. There's no backstory there to shape her into a person that you'd care about while reading and to be honest I don't think there was even a description of what she looks like. At least with Gregori, Luke and Mya we get to know a bit about their family dynamic and the story of how they all became Vampire's so you have something small to build on.

The plot as a whole is very lacking too. You get dropped straight into the story with all four of the characters already having an established relationship, but apart from being told Daniella met Luke at College there no other backstory available to show how we got to the point the book starts. The same with Daniella and Gregoris relationship, again we are told that she's liked him for a while but nothing is shown as to why she's never pursued it or any reason as to why she's even attracted to him.

As for the rest of the book, because it's only short it seems to have been rushed a lot. Daniella goes from not knowing about Vampires for years to being okay with their existence in half an hour, she goes from liking Greg from afar to being Mates and in Love with him over night and then she has one training session with Mya and suddenly she's the most powerful Witch ever. Even the whole issue with the 'War' with Zachariah, just why, I don't understand how that even came about or in fact how Gregori even became Leader of all the Vampires in the first place.

Overall, if you want a quick and easy ready where you aren't given enough details about anything and everything happens and is sorted within the space of two days then this is your book. Also out of all the names you could have for a 400 year old Vampire Greg just does not hit it especially in the spicy scenes, which aren't up to much either in honestly. I'm just really disappointed with this book in general.

My review is for the audiobook version.

"Night Shade" is the story of Daniella and Greg. They were friends who worked together and crushed on each other. Greg, being a vampire, knew they were fated mates. Daniella discovered the supernatural world existed at the same time she learned she had powers of her own. The book never really goes into detail about that. She was told she may be a witch then she was told a little bit about her powers and that was it. Also, Greg told her that when they mated she would become immortal. After the deed was done there was a brief mention of possible heightened senses but nothing else. There was no indication of her turning into a vampire and her humanity still seemed to be an issue. The lack of those details made the story feel incomplete. As far as the romance, it was basically insta-love with no obstacles, and at the end their story just stopped. The conflict in the book came from another source and it was a good storyline but I'm not clear on the reason for it.

The listing had "AI Narration" clearly marked. Previously I've avoided AI narrated books because I didn't think I would like them. After listening to this I admit it wasn't robotic like I expected but I can't say I'm a fan. There was very little inflection or emotion and all the characters sounded alike which made it hard to know who was speaking. It took me a while to get used to the narration to where I could pay better attention to the story. It's possible that's how I missed some of the details listed above but I really think they weren't there.

In summary, although the story needed a little more fleshing out, it was enjoyable and I'm interested enough to continue with the series. However, if the other books are AI narrated I may decide to read instead of listen.

I received a free copy and this is my honest review.
