Desperate

Rate this book
In high school, Veronica Tanner was “a stuck-up bookworm who’d never get laid in a million years”—at least, that’s what the mean girls called her. But she’s grown out of that, and now all she wants is Jax Cole, her stepbrother’s drop-dead-gorgeous best friend. Luckily for her, he wants her too, but they’ve known each other since they were kids. Wouldn’t it be weird and kinda gross? He is stupidly hot though…

Wow, this was such a ride. I’m still reeling from the emotional roller coaster and can’t even tell how I feel about this book. I don’t regret reading it, I couldn’t put it down. But I’m also not sure I loved it, probably because it wasn’t what I was expecting or emotionally prepared for. This poor main character is relatable in a really fucked up sense. She represents all the times you’ve really and truly messed up. Not sure I genuinely liked any of the characters or their decisions. I was happy to get a HEA but I could have done without the last knife to the heart. (I mean, I saw it coming and kept thinking, please let me be wrong, please dont make this happen, she really doesn’t need this last hurtle.) As I’m sitting here writing this review, I’m almost convinced that the author hated the main character. Guess I still need to process for a bit longer and find a good fluff book to balance me out. All in all, I’d recommend to a very specific audience. If you want your heart to hurt throughout a book and then have the author slap a bandaid on it at the end, then this is for you. Masochist lol

I had just finished reading several series, so was in a mood for a quick romance novel, I thought I’d give Desperate a try. And HOLY HELL. It was wayyyy more in depth than I thought I’d be getting into. There is so much emotion and depth to this book, don’t read if you just want something light. But then again, do read because it’s FABULOUS. I don’t think I’ve ever fallen in and out of love with more characters in one book. I don’t think I’ve had that much of an emotional rollercoaster in ages. I laughed, I worried, I cried (upset), I stood in utter shock, I felt relief, I cried happy, I laughed, I cried again (horribly upset), I felt despair, then hope, I cried happily again. I mean WOW just WOW. As much as I hated the emotional turmoil and the way it made my gut wrench, it was a beautiful story and an amazing book. 5 stars and hats off to Sapir Englard.

This book was awful. It ripped my heart out over and over. I kept thinking it would turn a corner because how much more angst could I take. I think the book is 43 chapters. It doesn't turn the corner until the very last chapter which is the epilogue. Then you get half a chapter of satisfaction after the emotional wringer of the previous 42.5 chapters. Also, left characters with 10 years of regret before their lives were resolved in a HEA. Just depressing. Too much for me.

This book deals with a seriously sad girl with so many issues and so many bad coping skills it's a surprise she lives in the end. As the title says, she's desperate, desperate for love, for acceptance, for validation, for happiness. I liked the book but not so much the ending.

At first this book just seemed like your average romantic smutty book, but it became so much more. The main spirals out of control and everything becomes so much more than just romance. It turns pretty dark.

Had such a strong start but then it turned into such a chaotic bizarre mess. It was entertaining but it made me cringe a lot!
