Nightmares Duology #1

Ballad of Nightmares

Rate this book
She appeared in a breath of smoke.
Her long heels ticked with each calculated step. Light caught in the gleam of the intricate silver claw on her finger. She held her chin high as she stalked through the crowd, and the people unknowingly parted ways. As though she were bending them to her silent will.
He knew her. Or at least… he knew of her.
She had toppled four monarchies already, and he knew his own was next on her list.
She was a siren in the moonlight.
An enchantress of desirous evils.
To fall under her spell would mean to kneel before her.
The corner of his lips twitched at the thought. He would kneel… He knew he would.
But she’d have to beg him first.

Synopsis: When the ravens and crows begin acting odd on the morning of Death’s Day, Samarius Cain knows someone dangerous has entered his kingdom. The witches’ texts warned him of this and warned him that he, Death, would meet his match when the ravens fell. After centuries of waiting, he’d begun to think the text was just a fairy tale…
Until he spots the Tower of Chaos and Destruction herself, Deianira Bronfell, mingling with his people. Shadowmyer is the last domain on Deianira’s list. Death’s kingdom, if the rumors were true. Samarius Cain . No one knows what he looks like, and no one can get into his castle. But Deianira isn’t walking away without her final crown. She has a plan: climb the ladder. Get close. Seduce who she has to and kill the rest.
Nothing will keep her from her final conquest… not even the man she finds herself entangled with and unable to stop herself from falling for.

Death meets his deadly match! Welcome to Shadowmyer where "all your favorite nightmares come true"

I loved it! Death, aka Sam, was such a fascinating MMC, and Ana his perfect match.
Whenever they were together, sparks flew.
Their chemistry was off the charts, and their story was surprisingly sweet 😂 And the spice!!! 😮‍💨

“𝙄 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙪𝙣 𝙗𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙪𝙩, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙚 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙙𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙤𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚, [...] 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙄 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙣𝙚𝙭𝙩 𝙤𝙣𝙚.”

Sam was my favorite character, and I liked him a little more than Ana.
I had a love/ hate relationship with her: I can't describe it, but I couldn't fully connect with her at the beginning (probably because her reasons for why she does certain things weren't made so clear then).
But that changed the more I got into the story! And I loved that she didn't take shit from anyone!

An absolute highlight of the book was the strong relationship between Sam and his best friends/ demon companions, Rolfe and Millie! And his cat, Luna (she is like his feral anti-stress ball, and always clams him down 🥹😫)

The story had some great twists, but it ends satisfyingly while also making you want more!
This is for everyone who likes urban fantasy ROMANCE with morally grey MCs, spice, and a fascinating storyline. I can't wait for book 2!

THIS WAS AMAZING!!!!

I’m not even sure what to say about Ballad of Nightmares to be completely honest. It’s beautifully written, deliciously dark, wonderfully spicy, and surprisingly emotional… Sam and Ana are just two psychos in love who are ready to watch the world burn.

TW: drug use, glorification of death, suicide, manipulation, mentions of SA, abuse, self harm, among others I may have missed

Actual 4.5

Ana is on a man hunt. Or I guess a king hunt? She is making her way through the world taking down monarchies until she’s the last one standing. For her vengeance and revenge, she wants the crown. Death’s monarchy has been saved for last.

Newly fresh into town she meets a handsome stranger. Unbeknownst to her, Sam is exactly who she is trying to kill and he knows it. So he devises a plan to get close to her to end her before she can get to him. Except after each interaction they share, and through the pull of their shared darkness, he’s not sure if he wants to end her or keep her.

Y’all this was SO DANG GOOD!

The idea of death scares most people. It’s fear of no longer being, fear of leaving your loved ones, and fear of the unknown. Our main characters embrace death in every aspect. I mean, our hero literally is Death. But Ana. Ana embodied every dark and twisted thought that one could have of death, acted on it, and it made her one of the most badass heroines I’ve read.

Despite the dark themes throughout it, this was sexy, violent, and so incredibly romantic.

Thank you to Jack for sending me an ARC; I am voluntarily leaving this review 🖤

5-star (ARC) review!!!

Starting off the month with a bang! I am so glad to have received an ARC for this. This story was not only sexy and dark but also beautifully written and filled with so many emotions. I had the feels throughout the entire book and it even made me cry once. Ana’s and Sam’s story captures you immediately (I could not put the book down). This is a story about power and vengeance and I loved every second of reading it. The detail in this book about the world are immaculate. So so excited for everyone to get to read this story soon. And I cannot wait for Book 2! (Check triggers before reading, this is not for the faint hearted).

ARC Review

I am rarely speechless but this book had me gasping for air!
The world, the characters, the dynamic between Sam and Ana not to mention the lovable side characters... they all made this reading experience so much fun! A perfect read for those who like fantasy romance on the backdrop of a modern world.

Spice is 2/5 Althought the dirty talk is amazing not to mention some kinky stuff happens that took me by surprise, given the fact that the actual spice is not very detailed.

Check the listed shelves for the tropes!

This book was so much more than I expected! The dynamic between Sam and Ana was to die for and the push and pull and chemistry between the two was electric. Every interaction between the pair had me hooked and wanting to read more. Sam’s dirty talk was top tier and he’s a man that not only encourages strong women but worships them. Ana on the other hand is the definition of a strong heroine, and handles her own like no other. These two were meant for each other, every jagged and sharp piece fits like a glove and I still can’t get enough of this dark and twisted story that Jack Whitney has written

"I see as much beauty in the darkness as I see horrors in light"

This book has easily become one of my favorite reads this year. It has a little bit of everything. Romance, smut, kink, banter, paranormal elements, world building, character development, and a perfect male main character. Sam is 🥵

This book had me on the edge of my seat. It had me feeling anxious, giddy, angry, tearful, and heartbroken at times. It also had me laughing, smirking, and rolling my eyes.

This book was written to make the reader feel what the characters were feeling. I think that's a goal for all writers but this author definitely exceeded in that area. The descriptions of the world/it's inhabitants, and the dialogue between characters was exceptional. There are so many memorable quotes I wrote down for safe keeping.

"When ravens fall he'll meet his match. And to his own grave, she'll lead him"

The relationship between the 2 main characters is raw and captivating. I was completely immersed. I related to many different pieces of these characters. I admired Ana's devotion to her cause. I admired Sam's willingness to give every part of himself to someone with the power to destroy him. I was intrigued by Millie and Rolfe's relationship with Sam and their undying devotion to him. I was curious about Ana's darker side and still have a few questions left unanswered.

The ending was done well. It leaves room for the second book in the duology. It was wrapped up nicely. I will definitely be reading the second one when it comes out.

The only thing I will say is that the first couple of smut scenes were great. Lots of description, great dirty talk, etc. Towards the second half of the book the smut started becoming shorter and less descriptive. That's really the only thing I wanted more of.

I am so grateful to the author for allowing me to read this as an ARC. I can't wait for you all to read it!

My July reading month has been okay, but it wasn’t until a Paranormal Fantasy Romance, BALLAD OF NIGHTMARES by Jack Whitney, that I truly felt that love for reading again. It pushed me back into gear, and I’m so thankful for it!

“I will dance on the ashes of your kingdom while you pray at my feet.”

I was incredibly immersed with this story and the characters. Sam, aka Death, and Ana were made for each other. I loved how Sam was always so willing to give everything to Ana, someone who’s literally planning on destroying his kingdom and killing him in the process.

“He would kneel… He knew he would. But she’d have to beg him first.”

Ana caught my attention from the start. She fights for the people who don’t have the power to do so; she destroys kingdoms with such a vengeance! I was rooting for her so hard! But also, I was rooting for her and Sam, because the chemistry between them… Whew! 🥵

“I have many more nights ahead with you. More nights that I plan to make you scream loud enough that the dead rise.”

The author did a fantastic job at making the reader care for every character they meet, especially with all the antics and banter they all had. I also loved how this story “ended” where my heart isn’t about to pop out of my chest, but enough enticement to get my excited for the ending to this duology!

I would like to graciously thank JACK WHITNEY for this ARC. I am so in love with this book. It may be too early to say, but this is the BEST BOOK I have read like this year! Ever!

"The witches’ texts warned him of this and warned him that he, Death, would meet his match when the ravens fell."

I devoured this book. This book was EVERYTHING to me. Jack has just built a world and characters that made me fall in freaking love with them. Sam is the MMC. Daddy death himself. I just could not bring myself to just turn away from this delicious piece of man. He is my poetic, lonely, loving, ugh. I just can't describe how this man can love and f*ck you, but you need to experience this book so that you can just breathe the essence of this man.

He is built from darkness and pain and he has finally met his match. I am super duper happy I met the FMC. Ugh, she is just utter perfection of imperfections. She is just the Tower of Chaos and Destruction herself, Deianira Bronfell. OMG, she's just fucking cool AF! Badass and she just oozes with confidence and grace. Both characters just cannot deny the lethal attraction to each other.

I really didn't wanna end this book, you guys. Jack just wove several realms and amazing characters.

- FMC is Powerful and Plus size
- It felt like a lover to enemies to lovers
- Daddy Death dirty talks A LOT
- Smut is IMMACULATE AF I would read it again and again
- I cried A LOT
- ROMANCE is just to die for
- Witches and demons
- Prophecy
- Degradation and Praise Kink
- Breath Play
- Touch her and you'll die

I am freaking in love with this book and it will forever be tattooed in my heart. Thank you, Jack! <3

I blame this book and @jack.whitney.writer for sparking my spooky season clock early

THIS. BOOK. IS. SO. GOOD.

I'm already dreaming about rereading this when there's a chill in the air and the leaves are changing

Watching these two macabre, beautiful, deadly, artistic souls fall for each other has actually been a pleasure.
They will do the scariest thing and then get steamy and then hit you with a heart warming conversation in their afterglow that will make your teeth hurt, it's so sweet
Thank you @jack.whitney.writer for gifting me with this ARC. I cannot wait to purchase a paperback when it's out IN UNDER A WEEK! The aesthetic reel WILL BE EPIC.
Death and his Tower will steal your heart and bury it in a
graveyard to keep forever. I'm swooning for Sam …..( and Rolfe, It's the beard for meeeeee ) HARD but Ana is just as sexy.

She knows she's a goddess and she uses it to her advantage AS SHE SHOULD.
And I knew I would love Mille as soon as she took a pair of
testicles out of her purse LOL
Sam and Ana each have an agenda and goals and my anxiety was spiked watching them delicately top toe around each other!

Thank Death that this is a duology and we're getting another book of these characters!

A war is a brewing!!

This book is fucking SPECTACULAR. I cannot.

What do you get when you mix sexy Death himself with a spectacular, independent firecracker of a woman bent on revenge?

YOU GET A MASTERPIECE. That’s what.

The world building in this fantasy romance is top notch. You are never bogged down with political intrigue but it’s woven masterfully into the overarching story that at it’s heart is both a love story and a revenge plot.

The main characters are soooo hot. They are enemies. They both think they’re fooling each other. They are like gunpowder and a match. Everything about these two makes you want them individually and together.

The supporting characters, found family and sexy supernatural beings alike. Ghosts? Spirits? It’s all here and it’s all super fun.

Oh, did I also mention there’s poetry? Art? Witchcraft? There’s a little bit of everything that’s good about world and character development and nothing you don’t want.

Overall, I can’t recommend this highly enough. This is a must read if you like paranormal, fantasy or just super hot, wicked smart characters and enemies to lovers.

GO GET IT!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Jack Whitney for an ARC of this book. I am giving this review of my own accord.

Touch her and you die

This book was pure magic. It had everything that I could've wanted AND MORE. I am so in love with the characters and the world building. Can I please leave this world and go to Shadowmyer? ;)

This might be the best dark romantasy book that I've read so far this year. There are witches and demons and it was just so dang good. I read this book in one sitting and it is a long freakin' book, let me tell you!

Sam, our MMC is daddy death himself.. but when he meets our FMC Deianira, neither of them tell the truth about who they really are.. Deianira is known as the Tower of Chaos and is known to bring kings to their knees and rip their hearts out to steal their crown(s). Sam pretends he is less than what he is but knows who she is all along. This really helped build an awesome plot full of twists and turns.

I didn't want to finish this book because I knew I'd be wishing I could read it all over again immediately and boy, was I right. I haven't been able to stop thinking about this book since finishing it!

Sam is probably in my top 3 book boyfriends now, so thank you Jack Whitney for that. Now, give me the next book please. I miss him. ;)

YOU GUYS... THE SPICE IN THIS. **CHEF'S KISS!** I knew there would be some spice, but I wasn't expecting it to be THAT spicy.

"I'm yours. Whether the sun rises or dies, or if night encompasses us all into eternal darkness, I will be yours. Every minute. Every hour. Every moment until my dying breath, and should Death offer me reprieve after, a choice to continue living an eternal cycle of love and pain, I will be yours an eternity more."

"I would keep you until the sun burned out, and we were driven into chaos of a new existence, and then I would find you in the next one. In every life."

Upon beginning this story, I think I was expecting layers of something other than what Jack Whitney delivered. I personally wanted the focus to be moreso on the action and world building rather than continually steering towards the smut. This story was a touch "insta" for my personal preferences. Overall though, this story is important to the Author and I completely respect her creativity and writing a story that she felt compelled to express herself through.

⚠️warning ⚠️
Death, blood, manipulation, violence, murder, suicide, suicide stories, moments of horror, ghosts, demons, as well as brief mentions of child death, self-harm, sexual assault, and abuse.

This is the first book in a new the Nightmares Duology and shit this book was AMAZING! Not only was it dark and spicy but it was full of emotions that will make you swoon, laugh and cry. Ana is a badass mortal FMC who used her skills to overthrow ruthless Kings. Her last mission is to overthrow the King of Shadowmyer Sam who she doesn’t realize is Death itself. Sam and Ana embark on a journey and secrets are revealed that will test their relationship. The world building is unique and the side characters make this plot evermore enjoyable. This book does ends in a cliffhanger. Highly recommended if you love enemies to lovers and paranormal romance!

BALLAD OF NIGHTMARES by @jack.whitney.writer

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

“Revenge is a powerful force, but fighting for something you love is even more potent.”

First of all, if you haven’t read anything by Jack Whitney yet what are you even doing?

Second of all, thank you so so much for letting me ARC read this masterpiece!!

Ballad of Nightmares is a tarot card inspired fantasy, following Death and The Tower

I absolutely devoured every second of this book! Death/Sam is going down as one of my favourite book boyfriends to date, like I just love this man so much!

Ana was an amazing FMC, also let’s not forget the iconic side characters, Millie and Rolf - Millie is honestly my hero!

The world building, the spice, the romance - EVERYTHING in this book is perfection!!! I am so excited for book 2, and for all of Jack’s upcoming releases!

"I see as much beauty in the darkness as I see horrors in the light"

Phewww ok guys this book is deliciously dark and steamy. It is without a doubt my favorite dark paranormal romance of the year.

⚡️ Powerful FMC
⚡️ Enemies to Lovers
⚡️ Morally Grey
⚡️ Possessive/Obsessive
⚡️ Hidden Identities

🩸 Praise
🩸 Breath play
🩸 Mild dubcon

When Samarius (daddy death), meets Deianira the king slayer, the two quickly find themselves in an epic battle of wits that devours them both, mind body and soul.

The dynamic between Sam and Ana is intoxicating. They ride the line of passion and violence, love and hate, obsession and indifference in the most consuming ways. If you love deep and dark stories with flawed characters who go from wanting to kill one another to being willing to burn down the world FOR one another, pick this up and thank me later.

Make sure to check all TW before reading ♥️

Did I read the same book as all the people who gave this 3-5 stars?

This was a dumpster fire!

The only reason I made it through this book was by buddy reading this with some friends and hating on it the entire time.
So many plot holes, things made so sense at all. I couldn't even tell what time period we were in. They have magic but fight with guns?!?

I just don't get it.
Don't waste your time.

"Imagine being so intimidated by a woman's power that you chose to extinguish it."

The Tower has slowly worked her way through the kingdoms, destroying them as she goes. There is only one left to claim: Death's. But he is ready for her. Or at least he thinks so.
____________________________________

Ana & Sam.

Samarius & Deianira.

The Tower & Death.

This was like reading a game of chess. Everyone was making moves on the other behind the scenes. Everyone was trying to trick each other and take things. This book is the definition of stabbing someone in the back.

Sam knows who Ana is from the moment she steps foot in this kingdom. She doesn't realize he is Death, the person she has came to conquer. So you are basically watching Sam fall in love with the known enemy while Ana does, thinking she might have to give up her conquest to be with someone in the kingdom.

The heat in this book? Off the charts. Death has mastered the dirty talk. I'm not a huge fan of "baby" and he does use that a lot. This books features a lot of degradation and some violence during the sexual scenes. The author did a great job with these and also giving a detailed warning before the story begins.

Beware. This is not a light story. It is dark. Neither protagonists change their stance on violence or their mindsets. These characters don't turn good. They are violent in nature and express constant joy of it. The sexually explicit scenes are intense and explore some taboo kinks. If you are easily offended or triggered, this is NOT for you.

The story and world building is great. My best friend said this reminded her of Nightmare Before Christmas and I totally agree. Everyone in this kingdom embraces the dark side. But Death himself is caring towards his people and friends. He is very defensive over Milli and Rolfe. I thought that was cool to see. I expect most people to make Death reserved, alone. Depressing and dark. While Sam is dark, he laughs and jokes with his friends.

The author definitely made him more modern. He rides a motorcycle and loves doing art, tattoos and all the things. Ana is the definition of "temptress". She makes me think of sirens. She is confident and powerful. She is smart and analytical. They fit each other perfectly.

But. I really hated her conflict with Sam. I won't give anything away but I find her reaction to Sam after her fight with a firemoor to be absolutely stupid. But I wasn't surprised by it at all. However, I was surprised when they made up how Sam was the only one to apologize. That just didn't feel realistic to me. It made me like her character less.

The actual climax with Ana being taken was kind of weird. She isn't a victim character at all. It sort of felt pointless? I will say that her transformation at the end with Death was phenomenal. I absolutely loved where it ended.

Overall, this story was super cool and I enjoyed the characters. I think she created some issues that she couldn't iron out. But I really liked this villain x villain romance.

I was given an arc for my unbiased honest review.

So, with that said my honest review is as follows: I am CONVINCED that Jack Whitney couldn't write a bad story if she tried. I purposefully took my time reading this so that I could fully immerse myself into the story. I have read Jack's previously published books and honestly, you want to live inside the worlds she creates. I love Dark Romance books and I love Fantasy books, and this book was the PERFECT combination of the two.

Ballad of Nightmares is masterfully written. I found it wanting for nothing as it is dark and depraved, nice and spicy (That DIRTY WICKED mouth Sam), and really just a stunning love story. The relationship between Sam and Ana is immediately captivating. From the first moment they met I could feel their connection. How they toyed with each other – the banter between the two was fantastic! I also loved the strong relationship between Millie and Rolfe, Millie and Sam, Sam and Rolfe, and then all 3 of them together. You could feel their friendship and love for each other. Honestly the banter between all of the main characters was great.

Sam aka Death is so well written. His character felt so deep and multi-faceted. Honestly, he reminds me very much of the depictions we tend to get of Hades. What I mean by this is, Death is a merciful and vengeful god – but most people only speak about his vengeance. They only see the death and destruction of him overlooking everything else. Sam is all of these things too, and we get to see all of his sides with this story. Listen, death is a romantic at heart. Being trapped, tortured, and imprisoned still didn’t break him.

“Because I am spelled beneath your touch, your presence.”…”You have bewitched me, wicked girl”….”My mind. My body. My demented soul…It’s yours.”

Ana aka Deianira Bronfell is EVERYTHING. She is the FMC we want in all of our books! The confidence of her just pours off the page. She doesn’t need anyone to save her, she has herself for that. She has these boys running for their lives, building armies, and threatening war all over one female. It just goes to show how much of powerful player she is.

Imagine being so intimidated by a woman’s power that you chose to extinguish it

Deliciously dark
THE LOVE STORY
Enemies to lovers
Praise with degradation
Witches
Demons
Ghosts
Dirty talk (soooo many highlights of the wicked things that Sam would say)
Taboo items - small amounts of blood play, breath play, dub con, some light BSDM - CHECK THE TRIGGER WARNINGS.

Listen, this story is amazing and absolutely a top read of the year for me.

Everything you are, every part of you, every broken piece that makes up your whole… You are everything I have ever wanted, everything I did not know I was missing. You are a part of what is left of my existence. My other half. My match. And because you were right. I will have you as my Queen. I will not let you go, Ana. No matter what terrors or armies might come after you… May they pray for my mercy if they think they can take you from me.”

I’ve only read one other Jack Whitney book and that was Sweet Girl so I was very very curious how she would write a dark spicy fantasy romance and holy shit I wasn’t let down! Ballad of Nightmares was tantalizing, beautiful, painful, and addicting. This book has the perfect vibes for fall/spooky season reading. The kingdom never sees sun, rainy, foggy, and with a castle of course. Shadowmyer is a kingdom where Death and the dead have hidden and waited for their revenge. And the characters both main and side are a delight. Plus we get to have a plus size bad ass female main character which is always a plus.

He would devote himself to her chaos.

Ana and Sam are a couple that speaks to my very soul. They are the definition of chaos, obsession, devotion, and power. Their connection is immediate and while they have a very fast burn relationship, we get to see how that relationship grows and progresses to something so incredible by the end. I’m absolutely besotted with this couple and I cannot wait for book two.

“Be a good girl and scream for me, Deianira,” and his voice was a chill on her flesh. “Truly scream,” he rasped.

I went in only knowing some of the tropes and kinks that could be found inside so I wasn’t prepared really for the plot or world to be so big. But like any 5 star read of mine, I was hooked from chapter one and my enjoyment only grew from there. If you are a fan of high heat and dark fantasy romances, check out Ballad of Nightmares.

Tropes/kinks/etc: revenge, spitting, fear play, primal play, blood play, breath play/choking, MMC is Death, MFC is plus size, both MCs are tattooed, witches, demons, praise/degradation

TWs: many scenes of death which are most of the time bloody and graphic, brief scenes of torture, kidnapping of a MC (not done by the othe MC), murders

Thank you so much Jack Whitney for this ARC!

This. Book. Is. PHENOMENAL! Ballad of Nightmares by Jack Whitney is the first book in a new dark fantasy romance Nightmares Duology and OMG it is so freaking good, I can’t find words to describe how much I loved it.

Deianira (or Ana as she calls herself for the most of the book) is a really badass but a bit crazy FMC. In the previous years she infiltrated a few monarchies and murdered their kings and now she is coming for the final king. Only she doesn’t know that Sam, the king of Shadowmyer, is the Death himself. Sam spent his life knowing from some ancient text that one day he would meet his match and future queen and as soon as he meets Ana he knows he has to have her. But when all their secrets and their hidden identities come to light will they be strong enough to continue to trust each other or will they let their relationship crumble?

I absolutely loved Ana and Sam, they had an instant connection and I enjoyed reading about all their meetings and their messages, those texts were so beautiful. I could really feel the change in their characters, their relationship really helped them grow as characters and it was amazing to watch their journey. I also really liked Millie and Rolfe, they are Sam’s friends and this trio was really hilarious at times.

Another great thing about this book is the worldbuilding, we learn about a world ruled by kings, each with their own monarchy, but it is also a modern world with cellphones and cars. I think it was very well written and unique idea, it really fits this incredible story.

Let me say this again, I loved this book and can’t wait for the sequel (love the author for not leaving us on a terrible cliffhanger). Ballad of Nightmares is full of beautiful romance, crazy action and incredible characters. If you have’t preordered it yet, what are you waiting for?

This book was absolutely magnificent. I'd been keeping an eye out since Jack Whitney first teased it and had the delightful opportunity to receive an ARC. When I tell you I was 20% into this book and already swooning over Sam, I knew he was shooting for top position in my heart. After finishing this book he absolutely has it! I am so utterly and irrevocably a Sam enthusiast. Both Sam and Ana had a way of making me fall in love with them and their special brand of nightmares. Jack Whitney has such a way with words I found myself entranced...enamored. I will even admit there were moments that had me crying, my emotions were all over the place because of these two. Their story is one that started with bloodshed and only through bloodshed could we be stitched back together again. I am utterly speechless about all the fear, fondness, agony and desire this book evoked from me. This is easily one of my favorite books of the year. This book was crazy spicy and filled with passion, but it was more than that. The plot, the emotions, the side characters, everything so carefully crafted and exquisite I devoured and savored this book at the same time. I only just finished it and already want to go back and reread it again. I am left thoroughly overwhelmed at the hands of Death and his queen and I couldn't ask for anything more. I encourage everyone to pick this book up if you haven't already!

Go. In. Blind.

This book is twisted, complex, deeply compelling, and will leave you CRAVING MORE

Sam is so much more than I thought.
First of all how could I not love a dark haired, dimpled and tattooed bad boy who has a Cat who he pushes around in a wheelbarrow while he gardens.
If that alone doesn’t make you want to read this then how about the fact that I found myself mourning for him, and raging for him, and breaking because of his grief.

ANA. K but for real, I would fall to my knees for her too.
God DAMN that woman is the epitome of strength, vengeance, wicked!
I’m obsessed with her!
She is a QUEEN!!
Ana was taught all her life that her body was a weapon. But I strongly believe that those people severely underestimated the strength of her MIND, and her capacity for love.
She is a Tower, a literal PILLSR OF STRENGTH!

I’m leaving you with some of my fav quotes!

Just let me say, Jack, you have created a hauntingly beautiful nightmare wrapped up in a dark romance 🖤

☆☆☆☆/5
🌶🌶🌶/5

Let me kick this off, crew, please read trigger warning ⚠️ before diving into this book! While I thoroughly enjoyed this, there may be content in this book that puts you off.

Ballad of Nightmares is a fantasy, paranormal, dark romance, with a fliud third person/dual POV between out main characters Sam (Death) and Ana (Deianira). In addition to fantastic world building, this is very much an enemies to lovers, anti-hero with some very morally grey characters, but hey, Grey is my favorite colour 😏!

I absolutely loved the banter between Sam and Ana! The first 5 chapters had me absolutely hooked! And Chapter 27, *chefs kiss*!! Then we hit Chapter 41 and need to absolutely binge the remainder of the book!

I loved the strength and fearlessness that Ana, in this book, even in her weak moments, she is nothing but fierce. We love books with a strong FMC, and she has absolutely met her match with Sam. This story has some amazing twists, with an ending that leaves you off satiated but wanting more.

Did I also mention, witches, demons, poetry, art, mystery and plot twists that have you hanging on for the ride!

⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

I don’t have the proper words to describe how I feel about this book. It was so good. I cannot wait for book 2!

This book was a bit of everything — dark, romantic, suspenseful.

Sam. My sweet death. There is something about a man being unhinged. He’s dark and morally grey but has the softest spot for his cat Luna. He was everything I love about dark fantasy romance.

Ana is the stuff of DREAMS (or should I say nightmares). She was strong and fierce and knew how get men to bend to her will. She’s out for vengeance and has been making her way through kingdoms to take them down in retribution.

Of course she leaves Death’s kingdom for last and she’s out for blood. He knows exactly who she is and so begins their tension filled relationship — built on deception but as they grow closer, both of their plans are put to the test. And when they are tested? Ugh my heart hurt.

I really enjoyed the book! The only thing I struggled with is third person pov. I don’t read it often and sometimes it throws me when I’m trying to figure out which character is talking. It’s also harder for me to connect with the characters but I still truly loved the book.

“Break my heart as you mean to.”

I don’t think I can say enough good things about this read, but I can try.
The characters in this book are exceptional. The vulnerable and genuine moments between them could not be done better. You’re rooting for them, angry with them, and feel their heartbreak.
The writing is easy to read, well paced, and just beautiful at times. The spice detail lessens as the story continues, but it makes sense as the focus shifts in the book.
So many authors can write a great male lead, and this author is no exception, but few are able to write a female lead that is not “trying too hard” or annoying. Ana is a powerhouse and we aren’t just told so, we’re shown.
This book tells you exactly what will happen, but the journey is told so well and is so captivating that knowing what will happen adds to the reader’s experience. I will recommend this book to everyone because I feel it is truly special. I eagerly await the second book.

So, it wasn't what I expected from this story. Again. 😬

I was actually saving this book and was so excited to finally dive into it, only to learn quickly that it will not be what I thought it was. I guess that's my own fault. and a tiiiiiiiny bit of false advertisement.

This being said, it wasn't bad. If we pull it apart to pieces, I liked each and every part of it, it was just missing that extra depth something. It was smutty, it was hot, and it was bloody. It served the VillainxVillain trope well, and Death is a cat dad, what can be wrong, right?! Well, technically nothing. Except I was bracing for some depth in the plot that was severely lacking.

I loved both Death and Ana, their push and pull and their chemistry is off the charts. Watching them slowly falling in love against their plans and agendas, Death being a mean softy and Ana being the chaotic beauty was still worth every second.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

First book in a duology! This was AMAZING! 5 freaking stars! Right off the bat I knew I was going to love it just from the vibes. It’s dark and sexy SEXY and just… chefs kiss. I was swooning all over the place. Jack always nails emotion too (maybe I cried a little). The characters are all strong and badass (we LOVE badass FMC’s), and I love the little family that Sam, Millie, and Rolfe are. Their banter is A+. You can tell they’re close and really care for each other.

The text messages between Sam & Ana were a VERY nice touch and I loved how they were done. You could tell right away that even though these two were supposed to be “using each other” they were both so gone for each other so quickly.

I can’t wait to see what goes down in book 2!
