The Viscount’s Daring Miss is a unique and swoon-worthy historical romance with amazing banter, an epic horse race, and a protagonist you can’t help but root for.

Lawrence and Julian’s families have been feeding over land for decades, and the men decide to compete in a horse race to determine who gets the land. But when Julian is injured right before the race, he fears he may have to forfeit and lose his land forever. An orphan raised by Julian’s parents alongside Julian, Bobby has always felt out of place, more content in the stables with her horses than in the ballrooms. So, when the opportunity to race arises, she jumps at the chance. This is her opportunity to help Julian, who has always stood by her side and supported her, and prove her skill and success as a horse master. Of course, this is completely unconventional for 1830s London, but so is Bobby.

Bobby is a layered and interesting protagonist, and I quickly became immersed in her story. Strong, self-assured, and fiercely determined, Bobby doesn’t conform to the dictates of society. She loves horses and has a special way with them, and she much prefers her role in the stables to her role as a member of polite society. However, she also longs to be her own person and not live under Julian’s shadow. She’s so conflicted between expectations and who she really wants to be, and she struggles to find a compromise that works for her while facing difficulties and sabotage in the race, as well as conflicts in her personal and professional life.

Though Lawrence doesn’t have an affinity with horses like Bobby, he is a skilled horseman and a strong competitor. Fueled by his desire to get back his land and to beat Julian, who he doesn’t like, Lawrence is determined to win the race. I loved Lawrence! He’s very introspective, and I like how he never expects Bobby to be anything but what she is. In a society where many tried to fit her into a mold, this is so refreshing. Lawrence also has an interesting story, and I sympathized with him when I learned why he keeps people at a distance. He changes so much over the course of the story, and I think his deepening connection with Bobby is the catalyst for these changes.

I adored Lawrence and Bobby’s swoon-worthy enemies-to-lovers romance. Whether antagonizing, arguing, or flirting, their chemistry is palpable. They do not get along when they first meet, which makes sense because they are competing against each other. At one point in the story Bobby calls Lawrence a “vainglorious viscount,” and I kind of want to meet a viscount just so I can use this alliterative gem. She also calls him a toad, as well as some other antagonistic names. It’s so comical, and the sparks between the two are fantastic! There are also many tender and touching moments that made my heart squeeze.

With a setting across the English countryside in a weeks-long race, the story is unique and entertaining, and the passionate declarations and epilogue are wonderful! I always love Lotte R. James’s historical romances, and this one is no exception.

*jogs on spot*

*does a pretty lame Rocky shadow boxing impersonation*

*wince-blushes*

Okay, so this is me trying to convince you to read TVDM in 300(ish) words or less.

*rolls neck*

Let’s do this…

I know not every reader is a fan of the ‘She’s Not Like Other Women’ trope in romance books, but Bobby isn’t like other women, and you are going to love her for it!

She by no means courts the limelight by any description, but with Julian injured, Bobby will do what she was born to do… especially with so much at stake.

Bobby is this perfect mix of feisty yet vulnerable. Horses recognise a kindred spirit in her. For both are tame because they choose to be. However, don’t try to hold onto them too tightly or they’ll slip away like a spirit on the wind.

It’s an almost symbiotic relationship she has with her horse, Arion. *whispers* I confess to being a tad emotional when it came to certain moments between them in the story. The way Arion could ‘read’ her. Flip! *sniffs* There goes the lump in my throat again!

Lawrence, Lawrence, Lawrence *sighs* ‘Our Man Contained’ … don’t let first impressions fool you with this one! There is much more to Viscount Hayes than his priggish persona. Ooh yes… *winks*

I was doing my usual Costa Coffee debrief (IYKYK) of TVDM with the girls and I was trying to describe Lawrence. You’d be forgiven for thinking he’s a bit of an alpha-hole on first meeting, but you would be wrong. He’s this unique combination of Beta-meets-Cinnamon-Roll-with-Alpha-when-required and Bobby sends his world into a tailspin, in all the best ways!

With six words from Lawrence, I knew there would be no finish line for love when it came to them as all he wanted was to ‘just breathe, and exist with her’.

Here’s to racing hearts and HEAs!

I am new to both this author and publisher imprint and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was a wonderful bit of escapism and was perfect yesterday when the weather dictated that I curl up on the sofa with a good book.

Dany - per RFS
.

Come l’amore? Cosa potrebbe succedere a quel punto? Entrambi devono vincere, ma solo uno ci riuscirà, cosa succederà a quel punto?

Spero di avervi intrigate quanto basta. Buona lettura!

I found The Viscount’s Daring Miss an exciting and unique enemies-to-lovers romance that had me completely and utterly under its’ spell from the first page. I loved the concept of a cross-country horse race from the west coast of England to the east coast a fascinating idea, made even more special by the fact that Julian, one of the feuding contestants was forced to withdraw due to having been incapacitated by an accident, and having to be replaced by his best friend, and manager of his stables, Roberta, or ‘Bobby’, a woman working in a definite man’s world.

If historical accuracy is something you desire, then this might not be the romance you need, from Bobby’s unusual name for the times, her ability to take part in the competition as a woman, and her modern familiarity with her own sexuality. However, massive caveat, this was such a fun, sexy, fiery and incredibly hot read that I did not want to put it down, so it certainly wasn’t an issue for me!

I loved Bobby as a character, she was caught in between her origins as the daughter of a blacksmith, to her being the ward of a Baron and his Lady wife raised in society. Ultimately, she found herself drawn to working in the stables connecting with the horses, and particularly her rescue horse Arion. Lawrence is open and accepting of who Bobby is from the very start, so incredibly forward thinking, and in spite of the tension amidst their sense of competition for the race and the end result, with such sizzling chemistry they were made for each other.

The race was exciting, and action-packed, with Bobby more than happy to stand up for herself at all odds. This was an unconventional and thrilling romance filled with seriously hot and steamy moments.

This is my first time reading a book by Lotte R. James, but after reading this I know it’s not going to be my last because I enjoyed this so much. It has a great setting, wonderful charm and a gorgeous romance.

I loved Bobby, she is headstrong, independent (as she can be )and fierce, but she is also caring and a big heart although she tries to keep it hidden. I loved that she seemed to love horses more than people, with a few exceptions (an opinion I fully understand) and she prefers stable life to society, (another thing iwould defintely agree too if I had to live then) I love the conflict within her between what she wants and what society expects.

I did love Lawrence almost as much as Bobby, especially for the fact he accepts her for who she is and doesn’t expect more, which is completely against the expectations of the time. Lawrence has his own story (no spoilers here) and I completely empathised with his reasons for certain behaviour. I love his personal growth, I love the growth of both the leads over this story, usually spurred on by each other.

Their romance is just gorgeous, a real enemies-to-lovers romance full of witty banter , bickering, antagonisation and obviously flirtatious behaviour even more, the chemistry is perfect. Sparks fly anf upufeeltyem, or at least Idid and there are so many heartwarming and swoon worthy tender moments that made me sigh. This is a thoroughly enjoyable romance with the fantastic characters, great writing and an addictive story, an utter delight.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Lotte R James' "The Viscount's Daring Miss" is a captivating tale of audacity, love, and raw passion that transported me back to 1848. Raised on the Rothwakes Estate in Sussex as a member of the family, Robert Kingsley, affectionately known as "Bobby," volunteers to participate in a grueling race in Cornwall that was originally intended to be between the Right Honourable Julian Overday and the Right Honourable Lawrence Hathaway, with the prize being ownership of Rothwakes Estate. When Julian is injured and unable to compete, Bobby takes his place in the race, despite it being considered improper for a woman to do so at the time. Little did she know that the haughty and self-centered Viscount Lawrence would come to hold a special place in her heart in the future. Overall, this is an enchanting book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

Bobby ends up racing against Lawrence across England.
He’s really a Viscount and an annoying, irritating man!
Can Bobby win this race or will her heart rule the race?!
If you like your historical fiction with some heat, grab this book. At times it was a little too much thinking going on.

Roberta ‘Bobby’ Kingsley is not one to shy away from a challenge. So when Julian (her employer and friend) is injured in an accident it becomes apparent that he won’t be able to participate in a horse race with Lawrence. This isn’t just any normal horse race. Julian’s ancestral home and land is at stake. In order to help Julian Bobby takes his place. The race has truly begun.

This was hands down one of the easiest books I’ve read in a while. Every day I looked forward to reading more of the book to see how far the race had progressed and who had reached the check points first. I loved the concept of the book and the storyline i.e. that Bobby and Lawrence are competing against each other in a horse race.

I loved Bobby’s character. She is not what I would think of as a stereotypical woman of the 1830s. She’s more like a woman from the 21st century that’s trapped in the 1800s. She breaks all the rules and society norms but doesn’t care. Bobby is independent, confident and loyal. She knows what’s at stake for Julian, knows she is a good rider and that she can beat Lawrence. What I loved about Bobby is that she has faith in her abilities and doesn’t take no for an answer. I also loved how forward she was especially when she’s the one that makes the first move on Lawrence. She’s very matter of fact about what she wants and is not backwards in coming forwards. The banter between Lawrence and Bobby was just perfect. The name calling made me giggle but it also showed that there was something underlying between them which they do then explore. However feelings definitely get in the way after their initial liaison. As for the spice it was off the scale.

Although Bobby and Lawrence are rivals they find common ground. The more time they spend together, they become comfortable with each other and can be vulnerable with each other. They have conversations with each other that they’ve never had with anyone else. Lawrence is very open about his previous marriage and that there was no love in that marriage. He was accused of not being loving or showing any passion which is in contrast to the way he is towards Bobby because his interactions with Bobby are always filled with concern and passion. It’s clear that he just hadn’t met the right person. Bobby is still trying to work out who she is and the fact that she’s treading a different path from other women. She’s also scared to fall in love because that could change her path and potentially take away her independence. Bobby can definitely hold her own in a fight and sometimes she’s the one that throws the first punch. I think her independence and drive is something that Lawrence really respects about her.

I truly adored this book and would highly recommend it.

This is the story of Roberta 'Bobby' and Lawrence, which is told over the course of 25 Chapters plus an epilogue. If you are a fan of the enemies to lovers trope than this book is for you.
Bobby is a feisty, self assured women who is living in a world where she refuses to conform to what society dictates a women is and how they should behave. She is the exact type of female lead character that you would want in a historical romance novel.
Throughout the book it is not just the race that speeds on and moves the book forward but also the main characters feelings. As the race progresses the readers get the chance to watch as these two character and their feelings change and grow.
Overall this is a book that is full of passion, adventure and a little bit of danger. Perfect if you love horses or the enemies to lovers trope is your thing.

The Viscount’s Daring Miss is an absolutely delightful and addictive read.

When I heard that Lotte was departing from gothic romances, I was curious to see what direction in her writing she would take. All I have to say is that she created a fun, spicy, adventurous romance romp that I could not put down. I loved that although Lotte went into this different writing direction, this book still has that intellectual and emotional depth I expect from Lotte’s books. This was just such an enjoyable read and left me feeling so content.

There is a quicker pace to this story. For most of the book, we are on this big horse race with Bobby and Lawrence. These two are racing across England to win an incredibly important prize to them. Lawrence is this uptight and reserved Viscount, and to say that he isn’t impressed that he will be racing Bobby, a woman, is a bit of an understatement. It was great being with these two characters as they battle the elements and race against each other. These two are polar opposites, and watching them compete was a lot of fun. What made this race that much more delicious was that they were both falling in love with each other and had no idea what to do with these newfound feelings they were having. There are twists and turns and plenty of passion in this grand adventure.

Bobby was a different kind of heroine. She feels so much and doesn’t hold back when expressing her feelings. This means she often is quick to lose her temper, show her excitement, or often act upon that lustful feeling she feels for Lawrence. I really liked her. She is intelligent and compassionate, and I love how she tells it like it is. She doesn’t hold back. Her passion for horses and following her dreams leaps from the pages, and you can’t help but root for her. Lawrence was Bobby’s opposite in almost every way. He is seen as being quiet, reserved and cold. It was great watching as Bobby brought out those hidden feelings Lawrence had. All of their interactions were addictive to read. I loved it when they were fighting, comforting each other, confessing those dark secrets, or just quietly sitting together. Every moment between these two felt right.

If you like your romances on the spicier side of things, this book will be for you. There is lots of banging in this book, LOL, which is quite different from Lotte’s previous books, which tended to be on the tamer side. I loved everything about these two characters, and their romance was delicious. I always adore good forced proximity enemies-to-lovers romance, and this book just delivered that for me. Bobby and Lawrence’s relationship has this great balance of deeper emotional moments and those fun, spicy moments.

I cannot wait to see what Lotte writes next.

This enemies-to-lovers trope caught my undivided attention from the work I had to complete because of its unique and uncommon heroine, Roberta Kinsley aka Bobby. (She even has a unique and uncommon name for Historical Period)

It begins with the issue between Lawrance and Julian regarding the land they have disputed for years. Bobby has been staying with Julian’s family for so long and Julian is the next baron. Julian and Lawrance have wager through horse racing yet an inevitable accident will not allow Julian to race and Bobby stubbornly insists on replacing Julian to safe him.

When Lawrance first appeared in the pages, it seemed to me that he makes powerful impression that he is arrogant and ambitious especially when he sees bobby, a lady groom, he feels strongly insulted. However Bobby, I thought she is delicate and ladylike yet what I found was so much far from it. She is strong, courageous and insufferably difficult to deal with. Despite their banter and rivalry, Lawrance and Bobby enjoy their horse racing and company. They even begin caring one another at first racing attempt until love gradually evolve into them.

I enjoyed this book as I found Bobby is so much different from the heroines I read in Historical Romance. Even though she is headstrong and powerful, she hides caring and tender heart beneath. Both Lawrance and Bobby might have relevant saddened past but they strive towards their happily-ever-after. Bobby’s determination to win the race touched my heart and Lawrance’s love for Bobby, awww it was so tender and a little sweet. It is a thoroughly enjoyable book with the powerful characters and fiery moments. Thank you, Lotte R. James, for the digital ARC which I voluntary reviewed.

This was such a fun book! Bobby and Lawrence felt real people, with their own traits and flaws. It was surprising to see how quickly things started heating up, but it allowed them almost the entire race to fall for one another properly. I enjoyed how the insults turned into banter turned into more emotional and vulnerable confessions, even though the competition never let up!

Bobby faces period-appropriate sexism so it's not all cheers and banter, and the way she reacts is totally understandable even though it's not ideal. I liked that the book acknowledged and addressed this, while still giving a satisfying and realistic ending. Lawrence isn't perfect either, but it's made clear that as a man his eccentricities are tolerated by society so it takes someone slightly outside the bounds - like Bobby - to make him see the need for change.

It's interesting that the circumstances leading to the rivalry and the race - the age-old bet and the mounting debt - are never fleshed out, leaving the reader to wonder who was more in the right. Perhaps we'll be lucky and get to find out in Julian's story - because that man needs a good woman to take him in hand!

For everyone who felt like they didn't fit in, who finds happiness somewhere unexpected, or who just really likes horses - I recommend this romance!

The Viscount's Daring Miss is an unusual woman in the nineteenth century working in a world dominated by men, refusing to conform to society's dictates about women and their behaviour, and taking part in a cross-country endurance race when her friend and employer cannot illustrate her personality perfectly. The chemistry between Roberta(Bobby) and Lawrence, her rival in the race, is palpable from their first meeting. He accepts Bobby without trying to change her; this makes him a worthy hero in this passionate story.

The race is full of adventure, danger and passion in this sensual romance. The emotional connection between the protagonists grows as the race proceeds and their understanding of the other increases.

I like the sensory imagery that brings the story to vibrant life, the complex characters and the passionate romance.

Something different, halleluiah! A reprieve from the usual debutantes, ballrooms and stuffy London background. An unusual heroine, bold, daring, capable, with a vulnerable core, a captivating hero who seems rigid and stuffy at first (but it’s really a façade) and a simple, but intriguing plot that takes the reader on a journey among the breathtaking England landscapes. I really loved this author’s writing, the gorgeously developed internal dialogues of the two main characters, the keen analysis of their feelings and their motivations, the steamy and emotional lovemaking scenes, the beautiful descriptions. It was my first book of hers, but I already look forward to reading more.

I absolutely loved this book. Bobby was such a strong woman who had her own mind and did what she wanted, when she wanted. She didn't let anyone hold her back. I really enjoy reading empowering books like these.

Her friend Julian makes a bet to race his horse to save his land. When he is injured just before the race, Bobby steps up to ride for him.

The chemistry between her and Lawrence, even if he was a bit annoying at the start, was electric. I totally loved the journey they went on, both the race and with each other.

Lovely setting, a loveable cast of characters, a great plotline, and a bit of spice. It was the perfect escape read.

DNF @ 17%

Sorry, but the author's excessive use of italics was distracting and utterly infuriating. The author places a great deal of emphasis on almost every other word and it's actually rather exhausting to read. It's rare indeed that a writing style will cause me to DNF a book, but alas, it must be so.
