As the first of the gods, Leviathan has always preferred observing the affairs of mortals from the depths of the sea, where he spends his days swimming in his draconic form. But when a Mislian assassin taps into the source of his godhood to save the life of a young girl, Leviathan finds himself with an unexpected bond – and is forced to walk on land in the shape of a man.

Iason Ellas has been many things; an assassin, an amnesiac, a criminal, and a murderer. He’s now an exile, returning to a country in the midst of a revolution. Iason is determined to do his level best to keep his adopted daughter safe and stay out of politics as much as possible. But when an unexpected bond with a god forces him to confront the truth of his past, he’ll have to make peace with the man he was before he can become a better one.

Tempests are unpredictable, but the bright future that awaits is worth weathering the storm.

Leviathan, God of Tempests and Natural Disasters, meets human disaster Iason Ellas -- former assassin for the deposed Archmage of Mislia, who returns home in the middle of a revolution with a teenage Starian runaway in tow. Part of me feels like I’ve already gushed about this series as much as I possibly can, but then the authors give me another twist that adds layers to this excellent epic fantasy world. Good fantasy makes rules and then breaks them in creative ways. This book does that for both the established concepts of godhood and biological alignment in this series in fascinating ways. To start, the previous gods (Death, Desire, and Dream) are wholly human constructs. Leviathan, on the other hand, predates humanity and even played a part in the initial creation of the world. Foxglove doesn’t burden us with heavy explanation, but instead launches this novel with a brilliant prologue that quickly asserts the embodiment of the Tempest is Not Human in the slightest, whatever form he may take.

Compared to other books in this world, the romance arc was relatively low-angst. The focus was much more on the character development, which is initiated thanks to the intense connection that is forged between Levi and Iason long before emotions get involved. There’s a bit of a forced proximity element, but as both characters learn what it means to truly live, the slightly antagonistic sparks between them quickly shift to something much more epic (and sexy).

Along the way, we get another lovely redemption story that Foxglove also does so well. This redemption and much of the localized conflict of this book is a direct result of important and heroic actions taken during a previous series set in this world. Knowing that full context does flesh out some aspects of this book, along with explaining some offhand references, but it had been so long since I read that book that I honestly didn’t have much problem grasping the full scope of this story either way.

One thing I definitely want after enjoying this novel is more of Sophie, a girl who is an integral part of Iason and Levi’s story and has more ahead of her than a standard human life. But first, I’m even more excited for the final book of this series, featuring Ares, the god of War who has been asleep for so long. Even the Mislian rebellion skirted the true definition of war, which means I’m starting to dread what will wake them. Foxglove creates a brilliant peak to this intense series arc as Iason and Levi remake the world as part of their love story, just in time for Ares to wake and possibly destroy it.

I am a huge fan of Iris Foxglove’s Immortals Descending series and gladly devour each book. While I have enjoyed all the books and am always eager for more, I will be honest and say that I have been extra curious about the leading god in this one since the start of the series.

Like the other books in the series, Tempest was a story I gladly devoured in no time. Once I started it, I was eager to see how everything came together. As much as I enjoyed this, I will be honest and say it is not my favourite in the series. While Tempest added many things that have me eager to see what will happen in the final book (I was super curious anyway, but the comments about the overall left me extra curious), the story within this one did not hit quite as hard as I had hoped. I certainly enjoyed it and loved the characters, yet it felt a bit easy compared to the other books in the series. With how interesting Leviathan is and all the potential surrounding his story, I expected this one to hit a little harder than it did. Thus, while I enjoyed the story and everything it added, I do wish it had been a bit more complicated and given me a bit more. Nevertheless, it is a must-read for fans of the series and it will have you eager for the final book.

All in all, Tempest is a must-read for the Immortals Descending fans. I am now counting down until I can get my hands on the final book – I have very high hopes for the conclusion.

This is an amazing addition to the Immortals Descending series and I loved Iason and Levi's story. I do recommend reading the Starian Cycle series first as that's where we first get introduced to Iason and he is not a good character. I wasn't sure if he even could be redeemed but somehow Iris Foxglove has convinced me that he is perfect for Levi. Leviathan just wants to be in his dragon form and forces himself into Iason's life to get his other form back. I loved how this one really focused on both of the development of both of these characters. Iason is convinced that he is no good and full of poison for so long. He needed a god to shake him up. It was great watching Levi tease out Iason's potential and have them match toe for toe!

As always, Iris Foxglove gives us another truly stunning story and their writing is always on point! This world is incredibly detailed and it's amazing watching all the series as they weave into each other on a fluid timeline. Every character is important and well developed and the dragons are just big cats. It's a really great read and I think if you start here, you'll soon pick up all the stories that have come before. They're truly binge worthy!

First I gotta say that my heart broke for Angel and I haven't forgiven Leviathan for that. Even after finishing the story. The poor man was wronged and he didn't even know why. I'm kinda hoping for a short story were he gets his HEA or his soul finds peace, just something for him.

The intensity between Iason and Levi was delicious, I loved watching their verbal sparring and the chemistry between them. The moments with Sophie were just precious and I loved the feelings of family that were just oozing from the pages. And of course I always love any scenes with the god siblings.

My one niggle is that the story kinda lost steam after the 70-73% and even Iason becoming Levi's companion lacked enthusiasm. I was expecting something to happen, maybe with how Sophie was changed, something that was completely glossed over, but nothing did happen, so the story lacked reaching an adrenaline crescendo.

I mean for all the talks of storms and tempests, this was calm waters all the way.

There’s a compelling combination of myth and fantasy (Leviathan is a fascinating character, not even a little bit human, very much a force in the world he inhabits) at the heart of this story, as well as a redemption narrative for amnesiac assassin Iason, strong chosen family dynamics, and a deeply intriguing supporting character in Sophie, who’s a catalyst for so much and a girl who clearly has all kinds of depth and destiny. There’s also plenty of chemistry, care, and heat on the romance side of things. This is part of a series, and I think there’s ultimately a richer experience of context for the world building dynamics in having read previous installments, but the story could easily stand alone if pressed. 4.5 stars. Well worth a read.

Strong but not particularly moving (for me) entry in this series. I just didn’t connect as closely with the characters as I usually do in this author’s work, but it was still a well done story that I enjoyed.

Usually this series has a lot of focus on the dynamics of relationships from the perspective of its biologically imperative kink world-building, but I felt something was missing here where Iason’s identify wasn’t explored fully from that perspective or really at all romantically/sexually. There were some hints of asexuality or aromanticism that were kind of glossed over that I would have liked more of. Some of this might come from his character being built without access to his own memories, but even when he gets them back he doesn’t feel fully realized. The story also didn’t have enough juicy conflict I guess, since Levi pretty quickly stops trying to murder him and they just have their nice little husbands with a sweet daughter fantasy. Levi was never really as scary as I hoped, lol.

Still really looking forward to the next book!

Perfect!

I loved this book so much. It was so nice to see Iason grow from a broken assassin to someone who deserves to love and be loved.

And there's so much I loved about Levi. Mostly that he acted like a dragon through the whole book. A lot of books with dragons are just... Humans in a dragon form. Levi was a dragon no matter what form he took!

I loved their banter throughout the book. It was also a joy, as always, to see the gods and their companions from previous books.

I can't wait to read the final book in this series and whatever series comes next.

The King's Mage was my absolute favourite of this author's books and I was delighted to read what happened to the villain of that book. His romance is sweet and softly brilliant like a pearl.

Loved this one, the slow-burn was wonderful and I liked Leviathan's inhuman nature. Really appreciated Iason as a character with the ace rep, too. And I am so very looking forward to the next book, the epilogue gave me shivers.
