A fallen angel sentenced to a mortal life on Earth.

A former soldier turned private investigator who’s been there, killed that.

The bad guys don't have a prayer...

Ronan, once the archangel Remiel, chose to fall from Heaven after breaking angelic law. For centuries, he used his skills to live and work among humans as a bounty hunter. A chance encounter with a mysterious mage named Alice Worth in the so-called Broken World forced him to violate angelic law once more, this time to save millions of lives. Now cut off from his angelic kin with his wings and power bound, Ronan is a man without a future, purpose, or reason to live.

Arkady Woodall left a dangerous job at the Vampire Court to return to the profession she loves most: private investigator. Now she’s Alice Worth’s business partner, and for the first time in years she’s calling her own shots. But now that she’s between cases, it’s the perfect time to find out more about Ronan, the enigmatic man who’d mysteriously shown up beaten and near death in Alice’s yard and then vanished again as soon as he’d recovered.

Knives, punches, and sparks fly when Ronan and Arkady cross paths at a roadside dive bar and stumble upon a kidnapping in progress. What starts as a simple rescue quickly turns into a deadly mystery that sends them on a wild and daring chase from the city’s most depraved depths to its highest and most luxurious penthouses, dodging bullets and black magic along the way. When their shared addiction to danger puts them on a collision course with a merciless and powerful enemy, Ronan and Arkady realize their only hope of success and survival is each other, but a devastating secret might spell doom for them both…

When I requested this I didn't realize that it was an offshoot of an entire other series. I read a bunch of reviews from others than had read the main stories and they all pretty much said you should read it first. Well, I don't have $40 to spend on the books so I just dove into this one hoping that I'd be okay. And you know what? I was. While reading the Alice Worth series prior would have made a difference in some things that were mentioned, I didn't think that it was necessary to fully enjoy this one. Because I tell you, enjoy it I did.

Truly, the only thing that I really would have liked to have read more about (that I assume was all covered in Alice's series) was the aftermath of Ronan's fall. We start with him having just been released from his prison, carved up, and asking for his damaged body to be left at Alice's. Then we jump ahead to when he's already left her place and doing his own work. I wanted what happened during the in between and can only assume we didn't get it because it was already told.

I think that Ronan and Arkady were absolutely perfect together. I do so love when an author writes adult characters that actually act like adults, and these two were that. Too often I find that female characters that are written to be a badass are wholly unbelievable, but Arkady worked for me. She had skills and she trusted in them, but she was also not so arrogant as to refuse to allow a male to not only help her but to follow his lead on things. I really liked her. While I wasn't swooning for Ronan, I also really liked him. He has been living out his mortal punishment with a huge chip on his shoulder and grudge to match. But he's also a badass and he knows it.

These two meet at a bar where Ronan is guarding his client's daughter from her abusive boyfriend and if said boyfriend shows up, he's to bring him to the father. But things catch a snag when he finds a pair of humans that reek of demon and have a girl stuffed in their trunk. Together Ronan and Arkady take the two out and save the girl, but by killing the guys they have lost their biggest source of information. But they are both determined to take down this human trafficking ring and know they have a better chance if they work together. These two have been drawn to the other from the start, so their flirting and their fighting was always fun. And there is plenty of both. As they chase one lead after another, these two obviously get closer and closer until they would die to save the other. They don't label it anything mushy like love, hell Ronan doesn't even understand his attraction to Arkady, but they are definitely going to enjoy each other as much as they can.

I definitely enjoyed this enough that I really do want to read Alice's series. So I'll be watching for them to go on sale so I can finally check them out.

Le gasp!

I wrote in my last Alice Worth review that I would love to see this duo's story and them as a couple and this book didn't disappoint.

description

So all in all this was fun one to read!

There were some heavy moments and the romance was pretty dang insta but we did get an interesting mystery and some great dialogue from this sassy & sexy duo. Oh an a heck of a lot of snark too.

Fingers crossed for some more cases with these two as leads.

GAH! I forgot to review at the time I read it! Now I’m stuck with the overall feelings I remember but nothing to back them up. *sigh*. I do remember I liked the story but wished for more depth and something to really grab onto to make me love it. Sorry, that’s all I’ve got on this one.

3 - 3.5

This one took a while to read. It was the last Kindle Unlimited ebook that was downloaded before my membership ended. (Btw, if you don't know how to 'trap' a ebook loan on your ereader device all you have to do is keep it in airplane mode.)

Back to "Mortal Heart" ... This story features two characters introduced in the Alice Worth series. Ronan is a fallen angel punished with mortality. Arkady is a badad$$ human with a military background. Both of these characters band together on a human trafficking case. How hot they were for each other took too much page time.

I think the main conflict in the story was more interesting and could have used more focus and development. This book was put down so many times until it was finished. I keep hoping this author will write to the level I loved in "Heart of Vengeance," in which the plot in that book focused on the external conflict with loads of action instead of all the inner angst.

KU Loan (last one) - Now I release you from my Kindle! Au revoir!

I know about the Alice Worth series but there are a lot of books so i thought about starting with this one instead.

A fun (and funny) little paranormal detective story, with a side of magic and good banter between Arkady and Ronan. Her cockiness and badass made this an enjoyable read. I'm not really sure if this story is a romance but for me was more of a paranormal/adventure. What i'm sure of is that this first book is a great start for the new series.

I also liked a lot the plot around Ronan from being a divine being to a fallen archangel and hating his punishment in the mortal world until he met Arkady and began to appreciate the simple joys of mortal life.
I died a little bit everytime he called her "my Valkyrie" 😍

While reading I couldn't stop picturing this story as a movie, mix between Constantine and Buffy

I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I really enjoyed reading Mortal Heart! Overall this is a great addition to the Alice Worth world. I was so happy to get to see more of Ronan and Arkady. They are two of my favorites from the regular Alice Worth books. I would recommend this book, with the caveat that you really need to read the previous Alice Worth books to understand what is happening in this story.

Here is my pro/con list:
Pros:
1. Ronan and Arkady separately are great. Together?! Ummmm yes! This story showed that they make a great team and their styles complement each other when working together. They have great chemistry together.

2. It was great to see other characters from the other novels make appearances. I think this story will help further storylines in future novels that are from Alice’s perspective.

Cons:
1. The bulk of the story takes place over 12 hours. There is A LOT that happens in a short time-frame. It meant a lot of information was given to the reader in a short time and made it hard to keep track of things.

2. Because it is such a short time-frame there is not a lot of time for character development. When I heard this book would feature Ronan and Arkady, I was excited to get to learn more about their characters and back stories. This development was not possible because it was only a few days total in time. That being said, I’m hopeful that this just means Mortal Heart was the beginning for these two and that there is more to come and we’ll get more of that character development in future stories.

I was sent this book as an ARC and wow. Arkady and Ronan get their own tale and it is sometimes a dark one. I was excited to finally learn more about the two main characters - Ronan and Arkady. Their previous appearances in the Alice Worth Series always hinted at untold stories and griefs and this book begins to delve into that hidden repository. The characters are, as is usual with Lisa Edmonds, well written and very in depth and this is one of the reasons I love to read her books. There is never anything shallow in the way Lisa Edmonds creates worlds and populates them with multidimensional characters. I particularly loved the fact that I did not have to yell at the characters for making dumb bum decisions and stupid, illogical calls. Thank you!
There are scenes where characters get hot and beyond steamy, and scenes with violence and torture, so heads up if you avoid books with sex and violence.
It is a well edited book - I am that reader who finds grammatical mistakes and inconsistencies and who will give up on a book - and I love that Lisa Edmonds delivers an excellent end product every time. I want to say more but ... spoilers... I highly recommend this book as the next edition in the Alice Worth World and I am now waiting with great anticipation for the next one. Are we there yet? How about now?

(Important Note: if you have not read the Alice Worth Series - start there. You will not regret it. You could perhaps read this as a stand alone but don't.)

Mortal Heart is so just wow! Arcady and Ronan are chemistry incarnate. A magic investigator, a fallen angel, demons and kidnap victims what could go wrong. Arcady is on a mission get some demon traffickers and find Ronan and make him pay for hurting Alice by disappearing with no explanation after showing up half dead in her yard. Ronan doesn’t know Arcady but from the moment he sees this fierce warrior woman he is sure she is a Valkyrie come to earth and he is mesmerized. Unfortunately he’s on the job protecting a client. When he notices minor demons in the bar blowing Arkady’s hunt sideways as he faces off with minor demons when she needs information on a kidnapping ring. At least they save a victim and it’s the start of something so much more between them. Can this fierce woman mend a mortal heart broken and tattered. With her motto nobody takes anything from us unless we let them… Maybe she can and Ronan soon realizes there’s nothing he won’t do for his Valkyrie!! Absolutely a must read of a few of my favorite side characters in the World of Alice Worth.

Note: I received a digital ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Mortal Heart takes place in Lisa Edmonds’ Alice Worth continuity. Having read the Alice Worth series, I eagerly jumped into this novel.

Like the other novels in this continuity, this book had an intriguing plot and good action. Both of these were secondary, though, to the relationship building between the two protagonists. There was serious heat between them from their first meeting to the last page. Don’t get me wrong - there was great action and storytelling - but this was clearly a book about the characters first, everything else second.

If you like urban fantasy, this book will not disappoint.

If you like paranormal romance, this book will not disappoint.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and look forward to more in this series.

What a way to star a new series 🧛‍♀️
Arkady and Ronan’s story is just the kind of urban fantasy book I love and just in time for spooky season.
Their chemistry is off the charts and there’s a nice balance between the romance and the kick ass parts
And this couple LOVE to kick ass and they’re absolutely amazing doing it. I loved how well they worked as partners and how they slowly started to trust and depend on each other.
We get to know a lot more of these characters’ backgrounds and it only made me admire and root for them more than I did.
Mortal Heart is a great addition to the Alice Worth world and I can’t wait to read what comes next.

Thanks to Lisa Edmonds for providing me an eARC
I’ll be sure to buy my copy and add it to my collection ❤️

This is fast paced, spicy, paranormal action with a unique twist and characters that will suck you in and never let go. This side story about Arkady and Ronan proved to me that Lisa Edmonds can write anything and I will love it. It doesn't hurt that they are two of my favorite characters from the Alice Worth world. And they are fully developed and deeply interesting enough to carry not only a whole book on their own, but I could even see an off shoot series. Hint, hint.

Thank you to the author for the ARC!

This spin-off from the Alice Worth series gives you more insight into Alice's friend and new business partner, Arkady, while catching you up with what fallen angel Ronan has been up to since he disappeared from Alice's house. Their attraction is instantaneous, and their taste for adventure is well-matched and unstoppable!

Spice lvl low but there was some love interest. Storyline was ok and picking there will be more in this series.

I’ve always loved Arkady and Ronan in the Alice Worth world. But together, they’re HOT! Off the chart chemistry and they can kick a$$ like no other pair. Together they break up a trafficking ring. Non stop action and super sexy time from start to finish!

I received the ARC of this book and devoured it in a few days. I love when a book hits the ground running and this one did just that. It was non stop which made it hard to put down. This was the first time I had read anything by this author or in the series but I look forward to reading more. The character development and back story was good and the spice was there. All and all it was a good read.

Mortal Heart by Lisa Edmonds does not disappoint. The author takes the reader into the world ofAlice Worth to follow the story of two popular characters. Alice’s partner in Looking Glass Investigations, Arkady is a strong female lead with the physical skills and snark to get jobs done. Ronan is a down-on-his-luck bounty hunter trying to shake off a hard fall from grace. When their jobs collide, Arkady and Roman team up for a danger filled, heat inducing, daring chase through the city looking for supernatural bad guys. Fleshing out two favorite characters with their own trials and back stories, Lisa Edmonds once again delivers a great read. Edgier than Alice and Sean’s story, this tale does not disappoint.

Note: I did receive an ARC in order to review this book. Thank goodness! I love the world of this series, and I didn’t have the long wait to take a trip into it.

Well, just wow! This is tagged as book 1 in the Alice Worth World and could be read as a standalone but you will get so much more from it if you have read the Alice Worth series, starting with Heart of Malice. (Go, go now, seriously it’s so good!)

Lisa writes a world which is complex and complete, no gaping plot holes that leave you grumpy and confused, characters are real people with flaws and who sometimes make dumb choices but they grow and change and she takes the time to build that into the story lines, they don’t suddenly do a 180 personality change.

I have been hoping for more on Ronan, where was he?, why did he end up back with Alice? (trying so hard to give no spoilers!) and this book answers most questions while still leaving him a bit of a mystery man. Pairing him with Arkady was brilliant. A lot of knife envy, demon sex dungeons and mutual attraction accompanies their investigation into a human trafficking ring and I really really hope we get more of their amazing chemistry soon!

Warning - Fair amount of medium language and some hot and heavy scenes, nothing that doesn’t flow naturally with the plot in my opinion but if you don’t like that kind of thing then just skip those parts!

I am proud to say I was given an ARC to review but I have and I will continue to purchase everything anything else she wants to give us!

The Alice Worth series is one of my favorites and one that I’ve re-read many times. What’s even better? A new book with Ronan and Arkady! Loved the chemistry between the fallen angel and the bad-ass human. Loved the vulnerability, loved the action (in and out of the bedroom). Another hit out of the park for Lisa Edmonds.

I got Arkady and Ronan’s story as an ARC - yes suckers I got it early. This story is part of Alice’s World ( if you don’t know who Alice is, then you need to start with Heart of Malice - soooo good)

This story revolves around Arkady and Roman trying to stop a human trafficking ring, with you know, a side of demons, sex dungeons and a kick ass Harley. Standard stuff? I think not.

I’ve wanted more about these two for awhile now and I guess all good things come to those that wait …. Though I don’t want to wait TOO LONG for the next one. Hint. Hint. Nudge, nudge.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review. I really love the Alice Worth series, and so I was excited to hear about this spin-off! Ronan and Arkady are intriguing characters with strong personalities. I expected intensity and darkness, and this book did not let me down in that regard. I do have to say that it was missing some of the magic that I typically feel when I read the Alice Worth novels, perhaps due to the fast-paced plot. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the book and if there is a sequel, I will 100% read it, especially since I enjoy Lisa Edmond's writing quality. I recommend this book if you like action, chemistry, and bold characters, but I don't think it can be read as a stand-alone without starting with the Alice Worth series.

Did I want this book badly? Yes, absolutely. I loved the Alice Worth books and couldn't wait for this one.
Did it disappoint? Yes.
Ronan and Arkady were pretty interesting in other books. but somehow I couldn't get into their relationship for the first half of the book. I didn't really like them. The romance... suddenly was there and the steamy sex was just that. Sex.
The story was confusing and I had to go back to the first chapters to really get into it. Maybe that was because of the change of POV, alternating between Arkady and Ronan.
The whole time reading it, I was confused myself, because I really loved Alice Worth, and that was when it hit me: I miss Alice in this book.
Arkady never goes to her business partner, Ronan avoids Alice. Did I say I miss Alice?

I received an ARC from the author for a honest review.

Let me begin with the fact that I am a HUGE fan of the original Alice Worth series, so I already met Arkady and Ronan in previous Alice books. The way they were portrayed made me eager to learn more about them and I was excited to follow their adventures and experience their romance as it progressed. Unfortunately, as I got to know them in Mortal Heart, I found myself thinking less of them as characters. For me, Arkady’s personality in this book is hard, without empathy, and lacks the funny snark shown in the original Alice series. Ronan seems like a giant wuss, happy to be dominated by Arkady. As much as I love the original Alice Worth books, I just don’t feel any real sense of urgency about when the next book in the series will publish. It is disappointing as I find Ms. Edmonds a fabulous writer capable of outstanding world building and have many times recommended her books to friends and family. I received an ARC of this book for my honest review.

I have read all of the Alice Worth books and was thrilled to receive an ARC from the author. I was excited to get to know some of the other characters I was interested in. The story was fast-paced, had a little mystery, and a lot of spice, but I think I wanted more character development. You only get a glimmer of how Ronan and Arkady developed into the people they are and I want more background. As this is the first book in the "Alice Worth World," maybe I'll get more information in future stories. I look forward to seeing what happens next in Alice's world and hopefully the characters from the broken realm.

Thank you again to Lisa Edmonds for the ARC.
